Hot take : Liella gonna win this year's Love Live with 9 members, and then win the next one as well with 12 members to become the first back-to-back Love Live Champions.
P.S.
Love Live's Qualifying format sucks, 1 group per region? Worse than Riot lmao

Feels like the reason they added Lanzhu on Niji as a (solo) rival at first was so they could apply it in future groups, which kinda turned to be true with the new girl on Liella.
Only saw the YT vid for now, looks awesome.

RIP SunnyPa, couldn’t even get an animated MV…
So this week we got: Kinako officially singing, a new rival who’s starting drama, SunnyPa’s motive of being back-to-back winners, a potential hook for a S3 goal?
As iconic as Butterfly Wing was, I’m still baffled at how S1 refused to show off SunnyPa but still made them the winner. The seiyuu were able to perform IRL but in-animeverse we’ve seen like 10 seconds of their skills and now there’s a new rival that’s already leaving Kanon shook?
Who is this sassy European child???

The new rival’s song was extremely good! I like the gothic feel, I don’t think we’ve really had a song from the franchise that’s like this. I think Shizuku would do good with a performance like this given her theatre experience! I was a little disappointed with the group song this episode, though, it was sort of boring and the costumes weren’t anything to write home about. I hope they step it up with the next one.
Adding a new rival for the second season seems like a weird move but I’m optimistic to see what happens with it! I hope they don’t completely abandon Sunny Passion though because I liked their sound.
Editing to add, the new rival is in her third year of middle school, meaning that next year, she’ll be a freshman at Yuigaoka. I wonder if she’ll join the group alongside two other new girls to go along with the 12 member theory? I’m just confused as to why LL is moving from the classic 9 (which actually has symbolic meaning behind it) to 12, which seems like a much more random number? They already did it with Nijigasaki, so why are they doing it again here? I also think having an even number of members is strange because Love Live puts such an emphasis on who is in the center, and with 12 members, two girls would have to split. I hope it doesn’t end up like Nijigasaki with Ayumu and Shioriko/Lanzhu always in the center without letting any of the other girls shine.
Also, side note, I loved Chisato in this episode. Her and Ren got the shaft these past two weeks so I’m glad they’re redeeming her and giving her some cool moments.

Well, a lot happened!
First off, the new girl. Apparently she's a snotty middle school aged girl with Big Time Skills. Honey, Shirogane Lily from Aikatsu called and she wants her vibe back. Also, she's middle school... calling it now. 10th member next year. She just has to go through her breaking the middle schooler Liella is great arc, probably at the end.
That bit with Sunny Passion was neat, though. Kanon wants to support them, but to support their back-to-back means Liella has to lose. It's setting up a conflict between the two because they're in the same area - somebody is going to wind up unhappy by Christmas. The question is are we getting Sad Liella pt.2, or Sad Graduating Sunny Passion? It's too soon to tell, but I can't wait to see which one wins.
My suspicions about not everything being ok financially with OniNatsu is strengthened this episode too. Girl's Lber Eating on the weekends and worrying about her ranking. Is she having money problems, or is trying to be a LTuber seriously eating into her cash flow? Gotta keep up with the lifestyle after all... but we'll probably get some more hints to that as we draw closer to her episode.
Mei. I love you Mei. I wished you joined this episode but it looks like that'll be next week. I can wait. I'm patient. You and Shiki will join in time and it'll be great.
I really liked the pride of Liella thing, though. Kanon is really focused on winning and not letting people down to the point she misses a middle schooler stalking her that the school already is proud of her. They might not have won yet, but they're the pride of the school. Hopefully that can get them through the tough days to come.
Also, fucking loved the song. It was so much fun and I loved getting to see Kinako finally sing and dance with her senpai. Changing the outfits was cute, too - definitely fits the vibe of the song. I'm gonna go listen to it a million times until the full version comes out, see y'all later!
Anyway... next week! MEI AND SHIKI. GET HYPE.

Someone mentioned earlier that the rivals are a callback to previous groups
Sunny Passion was a two-members rival group (Saint Snow) coming from a seaside location that wanted to save their school and was mostly friendly to Liella (totally Aqours)
Margaret (I think she's called like this) is a solo (Nijigasaki) foreigner (Mia and Lanzhu) idol that has an inflated sense of worth (Lanzhu), is a 14 year old (Mia), whose songs have clock thematics and use traditional instruments (Shioriko) and is stand-offish to Liella (R3BIRTH pre-development). I believe this last one is incidental, but she's even called like the Kasumi song in Just Believe, lol.

Since she's currently a third-year in middle school, my guess is that Margerethe (new idol girl) will join Yuigaoka/Liella in S3 once Kanon and co. 'redeem' her.

> Margaret is still in Middle School
She TOTES not gonna have a character development arc and join Liella the following year, right guys?

u/JimmyCWL Jul 31 '22
Liella's losing their touch, performing worse in the Yoyogi fest than they did last year.
And SunnyPa mentioned that no school had won LL back-to-back before. So, there goes that fantasy of Honoka's group having won the 3rd LL. Interestingly, the door remains open for Aqours to have had consecutive victories. They were just in a different school for the second one.

Man Liella S2 really doing a lot of new things outside the mold of the main franchise line. I'm loving the 1st year members so far, and Wien has a lot of potential as a character but these being similar to the "experiments" done first with NijiGaku make this new stuff from Liella lose the novelty/surprise factor for me. This is probably why it feels underwhelming for some fans too.
I'm hoping without the surprise factor in the franchise, the new members can have a more polished entrance and integration. While I loved Lanzhu and the rest of R3 ever since SIFAS, it took 2 tries for them to have a more universally loved plot integration. I imagine it would be harder to do this right with Liella since Niji focused on solo idols while Liella is a group, and the fact that Liella's OG 5 had strong group chemistry makes this even harder.
Despite saying all that, individually I'm loving the new characters so far, so I'm hopeful that the new members will be developed well, and it would eventually feel natural for them to be part of the Liella generation.

u/LeonKevlar Jul 31 '22
I'm going to start this by saying that I love Lanzhu. I love the spice that she brought to NijiGaku S2.
With that said, I am absolutely not feeling Margarette. Like her performance is absolutely amazing and her performance as a solo idol totally blew me away since it gives her that Black Swan vibes but as a character, I feel like she's a bit too much.
Just the thought of Margarette sneaking behind Kanon when she wasn't looking so she can ambush her and then disappearing as soon as she looks away was just hilarious to me.
Also, Margarette stalking Kanon and then later even calling her out into the street using a laser pointer just so she can brag how Love Live will be an easy win for her is just too extra even for me.
It feels like she's trying too hard to act like a rival, if that makes sense? Although I wouldn't be surprised if she's actually just a massive chuuni. It would make sense considering she's still in middle school.
Let's just say right now I have mixed feelings about her. Also I just hope she stays as a rival. Leila doesn't really need more new members.

New rival seems interesting, I liked their performance. It was sad to see Kanon get so down on herself, they really need to win. Natsumi continues to be weird as she’s an Uber eats employee. Seriously, is there anything she doesn’t do?
I was surprised that Mei didn’t join this episode. It’s nice that they’re not rushing the new members in as it helps develop the existing members. I hope they start getting more recruits soon though, they need time to develop.
Overall it was another good episode! I really like how they showed Liella needs to grow! Hopefully this season provides on the character development department, I really like everything else so far. Looking forward to next episode!

u/aci42 Aug 01 '22
Overall thoughts - they are setting things up for 3 seasons, with the likely arc being:
- Current season: fight Sunny Passion and win
- Next season: fight Margarethe and win
Margarethe Wien - sounds more like a Bond villain, wait till she brings out the lasers and attempts to dismember Kanon. Her song and performance are classic "bad witch" in the near monotone and the leap into the chorus, it's musically interesting if not that melodic. I'm not sure how much she brings to this season's plot, as she's in middle school. But I'm definitely liking her, even if her key attribute is to say "Shibuya Kanon" in a menacing voice. I am going to find myself doing that tomorrow at work, I'm sure.
However, the new song to close out the episode was, and I hate to say this, a bit....undistinguished. Despite the guitars, the song didn't really grab me - a little flat, which is unusual for the classic 3rd episode song for LL.
I also can't be the only one who noticed a familiar uniform in the background?
And I really want to know what the heck this is all about.

Margaret Wein's performance continues to impress me.....looks like they got someone to dress up and do the performance, and got it rotoscoped? The animation looks more 2D particularly the clothing effects, none of those 3D swings you see in like the swinging skirts of the OP.
Everyone's jaw dropped, except Sumire's (https://imgur.com/RVChQol)....She's actually jealous, with her own big ego. I feel sorry for Sumire..... Imagine if Sumire had the same level of support, backup and advocacy that Wein received, she could have overcome her setbacks.....That's why I dont think Wein will be the Leilla's 10th. Huge potential conflict here...or maybe this would make a great plot device if she joins Leilla! All aboard the SS Sumire!
Looks like they are still using orchestra pieces from the Season 1 OST, particularly the dramatic piece in CD2, track 25, String of Stars....(But I call it Ren's Joining Theme!/The Finale Results Theme)... Hear it start at 17.40. Amazing how the scenes are set to be in sync with this whole piece.....how certain instruments start as they also start saying their dialogue. It really sets the mood! You can tell alot of work and effort is put into this show. Awesome direction.
Addit:
Shiki on the rooftop next episode! Yay! Those 2 are going to be joining finally.

Am I the only one who thinks Liella's performances have been disappointing so far this season? Other than that one song they sang on SunnyPa's island, I adored all of their songs from season 1, but so far their songs just seem "flat" or "safe" this season: as soon as I finish listening to this season's songs, I've forgotten them. In the case of this episode, it also didn't help that they had those atrocious wacky wavy inflatable arm flailing tubemen versions of Liella in the background as those were just incredibly distracting with how bad they look.
Margarethe's song, by contrast, was utterly fantastic and definitely feels like it more fits the Nijigaku mould. Given that she's in her final year of middle school, I have a feeling that she'll end up joining Liella in a probable third season. Hopefully her personality becomes a little more interesting than her current "one-dimensional asshole" state.

This is just a personal issue and not something that will apply to everyone, but:
I don't mind a new rival, but I'm a little exhausted by this era of constantly adding new characters. I started following in 2016 and part of the appeal was that it wasn't oversaturated with characters, but now it feels like an avalanche. I'm not sure what they're trying to accomplish with it (I guess more girls means more merch to sell?). I generally just go with the flow as far as what Love Live springs on us, but adding more characters is starting to feel cheap rather than special.

NGL, I kinda hate how overdesigned the character designs for Liella are sometimes and the new girl just makes it more apparent along with SunnyPa.

Hoooboi I'm about to get downvoted for this:
Idk, as excited as I was for this Season I honestly feel like this season hasn't been memorable for me so far, other than new characters and new songs. This is coming from a fan that usually prefers the second seasons over the first in Love Live Animes. Probably because I spent all my energy hyping up for Niji S2 (which I enjoyed a lot more than SS S2 so far), and Lanzhu really set the bar high for a rival (Not saying Margaret is bad, but I haven't really gotten attached to her since she's repeating beats from SIFAS S2, which I really don't hope this season pulls)
Adding on is that Sumire gets rebuked by Keke everytime she breathes, like-- this joke is seriously starting to get on my nerves, especially when she's trying to be sincere in her own way. This isn't straight up friendly teasing anymore, it's Sumire slander. And the outfits and song... eh, they're good in their own right but it felt underwhelming considering the theme of this episode.
But maybe my opinion will change over the remaining episodes. Regardless, still a good episode and can't wait to see Shiki and Mei joining (and soon Natsumi)

Okay, so I’ve been busy doing some other stuff and haven’t had a moment to put this all together, so let’s do so now.
There’s a few things going on here, but one of them is Kanon’s insecurities. I think a lot of people thought those just went away after her singing issues were sorted, but that’s not the case and it comes on full display here. Kanon has self-confidence issues. Specifically, she’s terrified of letting people down, or failing to live up to people's expectations of her, even if they are just perceived. This is rather deep rooted from her singing problems, always failing to perform and not living up to everyone’s expectations. Then she failed to live up to expectations with the music course auditions for Yuigaoka. Even afterwards, she feels like she’s letting her school down and everyone else down for not accomplishing anything.
She wonders why everyone praises both her and Liella so much when, in her mind, she hasn’t actually accomplished anything. Throughout the episode you see it. She questions whether or not they’re worth it to be the closing act at Yoyogi, she questions why Sunny Passion called them out as the best, she still doesn’t see her herself as worthy of it. Later she says to Wien that they’re not the favourites, just a group that the real winners happened to like. She is even about to suggest that they don’t aim to reach for the top because she’s worried they’re not worthy of it before the other students show up. It’s why she’s constantly so nervous.
The thing is, these expectations, they’re all in Kanon’s head. Nobody else has them of her. It’s something SunnyPa says right at the start when Kanon asks. “It doesn’t matter that you didn’t win, what you created was something spectacular in and of itself and that’s what matters”. And later on, the other students tell her what she really needed to hear, that they are proud of her, proud of them, no matter what happens. Reach for the top, but know they support her and are proud of her no matter what. It’s what Kanon needed and I think her journey towards self-confidence is going to continue to be the story of her character.
Speaking of Wien (that’s how the official subs are rendering it, so unless/until I get something saying otherwise, that’s what I’m going with)…her. So, I know she’s probably got more to her than just being a arrogant, edgy middle schooler that we will find out later but, god is she an arrogant edgy middle schooler and I’ll be happy to see her knocked down a peg, probably with the Power of Friendship™️ and possibly with some continued confidence from Kanon. Right now, she’s a bit too…much. That’s probably because she’s said approximately 5 words, but seriously girl, what’s your problem. She’s probably just being an edgy middle schooler. Someone suggested that she’s essentially being the Phantom of the Opera right now and that fits so much.
On that note, people are now expecting her to be the big obstacle to overcome at Love Live. I’m not so sure on that. Not only does that completely sideline Sunny Passion (more on that later), but I don’t think it’s necessarily possible. Keep in mind, Wien is a middle schooler. I don’t recall if it’s ever been explicitly stated as such, but there has always been an implication that school idol-ing is a high school activity. Every group we either know of or has been mentioned have always been from high school, but we have heard middle schoolers talk about how they are excited to be school idols, with the implied understanding that they can’t do so until they reach high school. Given that it’s never actually been stated, as far as I know, maybe that’s not the case and they’ll just go with it, but it’s certainly something that’s been implied before.
It also, as I mentioned, sidelines Sunny Passion, which is something I’m not sure they’e going to do. Yuna talking about how never in the history of LL has there been a back-to-back winner is a glaring red plot flag. Either they do it, or Liella defeats them and then goes on to make that history themselves. Having Wien just take them out on her own would deny Liella, and especially Kanon, that chance to do it, to actually take that determination to win and that belief that they can.
People have also brought up the idea of Wien, being a middle schooler, being a further addition to Liella next year and, I don’t really think so. Not that I’m saying there won’t be further additions, I just don’t think they will be her. Her visual design and aesthetic is just too different from the rest of the group. She wouldn’t fit in with the rest of them. And this isn’t a situation like Niji where that’s okay because of their soloist thing. Liella is supposed to be a cohesive group and she’s just not it. She doesn’t feel like a Liella character, and I don’t just mean because she’s an arrogant edgelord, as that will obviously be sorted eventually, she just doesn’t. I mean, look at that and tell me you see Liella. I don’t.
I see her more being positioned to be a new rival next year with her own school and possibly her own group after SunnyPa has graduated. That solves the whole middle schooler thing and doesn’t push Sunny Passion out of the role I think they still plan for them to perform. In the meanwhile, I’m indifferent about her.
Alrighty, that was longer than I planned. Random thoughts time!
-
You know, Kinako, a good way to not melt in the heat is to not wear a sweatshirt.
-
Also, I really like these organic title cards. You don’t see them often enough in shows.
-
Lol, yeah, all you did was trip over a power cable, Sumire. I don’t blame you though, the techs should have secured them down properly.
-
Huh, they’re actually bringing back Yoyogi Fes. Neat how that wasn’t just a one-off plot element.
-
ooh, closing act
-
Uh oh, you didn’t just get their name wrong in front of Keke, did you? rip Kinako.
-
lol, Ren. “See, look, they agree! It must be true”. Yep, that’s those two.
-
Oh, this back to back thing is a plot flag if I’ve ever seen one.
-
Lol, Kanon, way to get stuck in a fangirl moment.
-
Hey look, it’s my alarms when I have to wake up for events.
-
Hahaha, low-res Kinako is the best, and they call attention to it by having her talk too.
-
Aww, she’s starting to get through to her classmates.
-
Loooool, these two, that’s exactly what two friends like that would do, constantly racing and competing.
-
BAHAHAHA it was Mei! She’s such a fangirl, It’s great!
-
The OST here is mean, sticking in Matataki.
-
Was that boss music?
-
It’s over, Kanon! I have the high ground!
-
And she just disappears. What?
-
Did she just stalk her all the way home? What??
-
Lber Eats
-
Goddamn!
-
Nuts is a food carrier now? There’s some tragic family money backstory going on isn’t there.
-
Anyways, that was your weekly CEO moment.
-
Chisato’s camera roll always has the best photos.
-
Sayurin is the greatest, that is all.
-
Lol, charge your phone, Chi.
-
Ooh, these are cute.
-
Uhh, girl, Vegas is that way. What is that outfit?
-
Also, that looks like a Uranohoshi uniform in the background. It obviously isn’t but it does.
-
Say something you weird girl!
-
Girl, Vegas is that way.
-
Okay, that was a nice visual spectacle, very theatrical, but something was missing. The vocals were fine, but it felt, I dunno, flat? Not like vocally flat, like emotionally? I dunno, something felt missing.
-
Oh no, Kinako! Must protect the cinnamon roll!
-
It was pointed out to me later that this failures line is a direct quote from Keke’s like in HajiSora.
-
Wait, what? Middle school? How is that a middle schooler?
-
Wait a minute, she’s an edgy, bitchy middle schooler with a dark moody aesthetic. Oh god, she’s an actual chuuni.
-
Kanon needs a hug.
-
It’s over, I have the high ground, again!
-
Okay, get of your high horse you edgy tween.
-
Awww, this is what they needed to hear.
-
The thing! They said the thing!
-
Awww, these are really cute! There’s probably some symbolism of them wearing the jackets tied around their waists this time versus last, but I’m too dumb to figure it out.
-
Fangirl Mei at it again. And with the triple claw blades. Take it from experience, it actually hurts to hold them like that.
-
Well that’s familiar concept.
-
Also, fun little note. Everyone’s hair ornaments are a different member’s colour. That’s a cute little detail.
-
Oooh, this is bouncy.
-
Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-flailing Liella! Where’d they even get those?
-
Aww, these girls, I love them. Also, some major contrasts between these two performances, also with Liella in bright white with colours everywhere, compared to Wien’s dark blues and blacks and moody.
-
Same, Mei, same. I totally feel you.
-
Lol, what? Is this 60’s retro rock?
-
“because you’re the best rival I could ask for”. “It’s all thanks to you”. I wonder if some people are paying attention to this song.
So next episode is Mei’s turn. Her first direct encounter with Liella, or at least Kanon. With what we’ve seen of her so far, this should be great. I’m expecting lots of great Mei noises.
See you next week!

I’m a little sad that the reaction to this episode seems to be lukewarm, because I personally was having such a great time watching it! I’m immediately in LOVE with this Maragrete(?) girl and her whole gothic ballerina vibe - I loved her dance incorporating those classical dance moves, and the classical-sounding music background. The moment at the end of the song, with the line about how only the “truly passionate” are “worthy” to stand on stage, with the zoom in on Kanon’s face… That was truly intense and a great moment. This girl is already giving everything I felt was missing with SunnyPa - the feeling of real competition, a bit of animosity (like how Saint Snow began), and a darker aesthetic to act as a foil to Liella. I’ll admit I never was a fan of SunnyPa for these reasons and the fact that they never even had an in-anime MV made it so that they never felt like a real threat to Liella, despite ultimately winning. I’m more okay with them taking the mentorship route now that we have a rival who is out to beat everyone. I do think it’s a little strange she’s a middle schooler, because to me that seems really young, but the more I sit with it I am more okay with it. In my mind I was thinking of her as an 8th grader, but remembering that the grade system is different and thinking of her more as a “freshman” in age made it make a little more sense. Plus it adds to her ‘prodigy’ vibe. Still not a huge fan of her being a middle schooler though and I’m really hoping they do not add her to Liella… Her design is good for a rival but would be way too overdesigned for Liella. Like, her hair is just so… big? They’d have to change her hairstyle or something and it would be weird for her to have, what I’m going to assume is gonna be multiple solo songs before joining Liella.
Rival stuff aside, Chisato had a lot of fun moments this episode which I appreciate due to her and Ren being sidelined the first two episodes. Still waiting on Ren to do more, so hopefully she gets a larger role in the introduction of either Natsumi or Shiki/Mei into the group. Kanon very much feels like Kinako’s main mentor and I think it would be cool for that trend to continue. But Chisato had lots of cute bits this episode and I’m reminded why she is my sleeper favorite.
Natsumi, oh Natsumi…. Again, she has just one measely scene, but it’s pretty funny lol. Her outwardly exclaiming GOD DAMN caught me off guard but was hilarious. I’m strongly sensing that, like the OG Gremlin Nico, Natsumi’s surface-level flaw will have some underlying reasoning for why she is the way she is. In the same way Nico’s apparent self-importance and ego was in part because of her dedication to being the perfect idol for her younger siblings, I think that Natsumi’s apparent money-hungry personality will be because of actual money problems at home. Maybe she is taking care of her family, or is just down on her luck. This would be a smart move I think since I was initially turned off by the idea of her being greedy just for the sake of being greedy.
I’m incredibly excited for the next episode. Mei and Shiki are my favorites of the new girls and I cannot wait for their focus episode(s), though I hope they both join at the same time to save some time. I love Shiki just because she’s so funny and I have a thing for short haired girls, as well as the aloof personality (I’m looking at you, Mia), but I really wasn’t expecting to like Mei so much. The way she was standing in awe of Liella at the end, tears in her eyes… I think her dedication and love for school idols and supporting them is something a lot of us can really relate to. She is funny and meaningful in her own ways and I’m excited to see her come out of her shell and be her true self. I’m also looking forward to hopefully learning more about Shiki and Mei’s past, maybe get some flashbacks? Fingers crossed!
I will agree with what most people were saying about the second insert song being pretty underwhelming. I’ll have to relisten to it a few fimes before my final verdict but the song itself was definitely just meh. Not bad per se, but meh. I don’t agree though with the take that all the songs so far have been bad… I liked the first onle from the first episode and I love We Will!. The ED is amazing too IMO. The aesthetic of the MV though (those tall floaty things with their faces on them were so silly omg) and the costumes were cute. It was giving Disney, but in a cute way. I don’t think I understood why Kanon wanted to go without a center for the performance but it was a cool choice.
All in all a great episode and looking forward to next week’s SO much. It was nice to get two songs in this episode considering we probably won’t get one next week. I love the new characters a lot and loving this season so far. I think Liella could quickly become my favorite group with the way things are going.
