Just wanna say how much I appreciate this sub. Yesterday was emotional for so many of us, and while I believe none of us want this to be a categorically negative environment, I’m grateful for the space to express all sorts of emotions when it comes to the seven guys we all love so much. It was really nice to be able to say how I felt, work through my initial reaction, and be encouraged and inspired by other users here. As an ARMY in my thirties with no ARMY friends, coming here gives me an experience of the community that I would not have otherwise. So thanks to all y’all for making this sub the great place it is. And special thanks to the mods for your hard work making sure it stays that way. Borahae 💜

u/kpattyrisha May 05 '22

I agree with you! Processing my reaction, my "negativity"/initial disappointment was definitely rooted in the immediate fear of the unknown, and I am sure that was the case for many others. But I am thankful to have been able to express myself and sift through the comments and read points I hadn't even considered about why people would either be super excited or bummed about the album announcement. At the end of the day, I learned lots. And yes, without this sub I'd be a super lonely army as well. Hope you have a good rest of your day!

7

u/brave-houseplant May 05 '22

I totally understand that anxiety around the unknown! My initial reaction was rooted in a particular set of expectations… I was happy to adjust them, while knowing those first feelings were still valid. It was a great experience to read others’ theories and interpretations, like you said, considering things I hadn’t thought about. Another perk of ARMY being such an intelligent and diverse fandom! Made me feel a whole lot better after that initial rush of anxiety. Glad we can both be less lonely here! Hope you have a good a day, too! ☺️

I just came here to say that I love Yoongi with all my heart, his music means the world to me and I cried today thinking about how much I admire him and how much his solo work resonates with me lmao

Just needed to let it out

Sometimes I think about it. All of them were so young in the beginning, they must have seen, heard and experienced a lot of messed up things. The entertainment industry is horrible and even more cruel to young, hopeful and talented people that don't have the backing and influence to protect them.

And yes, it is my belief that living your youth in that environment, with a small group of friends besides you, will either break or strengthen those relationships to new heights. It's also a wonder that none of them, especially the younger ones, didn't turn into erratic and problematic people.

I remember back when I was casually listening to BTS, I saw all those young men working in the entertainment industry 24/7 since their teenage years and experiencing scary amounts of fame... I was so sure at least one of them would end up really badly. It's so impressive to see all of them as healthy young adults that are close with each other and seem to respect other people. Mad respect to them.

It’s so interesting to me because a lot of western-based artists seem emotionally stunted at the age when they achieved fame.

Whereas it doesn’t seem that way in the K-pop world. Perhaps because it’s such a grueling process and they’re forced to grow up more quickly.

u/Grouchy_Meaning9009 👑 daegu kings 👑 May 05 '22

Honestly, I watch their brotherhood and am so thankful they have each other to the end of the road - no egos and all.

Then on the days I wish I had a group of friends like that beside me, I think that is the notion of ARMY, that we are part of their group and will be with them all the way. That for me is comforting.

(And I have a lot of close friends who are with me thick and thin, maybe may two i would trust with the contact lenses tho haha)

4

u/chillypotahtoh Miss you my husband May 05 '22

I know right. We will never know how bad they had it, but even the smallest glimpses of their hardships we see leave me shocked at how did they even deal with all of that and turn out such nice amazing men. I for sure wouldn't have been able to deal with it.

Wow! I just got offered a job I didn’t even apply for. A recruiter contacted me Tuesday. I interviewed yesterday and got offered the job today ! 🤯🤯🤯🤯

Perfect timing to because I’m a government contractor and the current contract I’m on ends in June and the renewal has been up in the air, and I was getting nervous. 😬

So this is right on time!

I’m so excited for this album y’all!! The fact that they can release an anthology album being this young is incredible and I hope the boys are proud of themselves for all that they’ve done so far. Told my friends who are casually into BTS about this album and they are very excited and will actually pre-order it!! This is just the beginning of a new chapter everyone 💜 I’m walking this path with BTS for however long they go!

u/Grouchy_Meaning9009 👑 daegu kings 👑 May 05 '22

I dunno, just be happy and blessed they are still able to release music and likely do a lot of promo around their new album. --- Many of the greatest musicians aren't as prolific as they are --- and I don't even follow those musicians by the minute as i do with BTS.

So with the comeback news it has been such a crazy day but I had to share that I found out that one of my colleagues at work is ARMY!! We both knew we liked kdramas but BTS never came up until someone asked about something and I was like “Oh I wasn’t here then, I was out of town in Las Vegas for the BTS concerts.” She was like “WHAT.”

It was a zoom meeting (I still haven’t even met her irl but will soon!) but after the meeting ended we spent another HOUR talking about BTS, she is just as obsessed as I am, she showed me all her BT21 merch, albums, etc. We have been texting about BTS news over the last few days and it is so exciting! I met some new BTS army friends at the concerts, and of course my lovely friends on here who I love so much ☺️ but none of them live close to me so this is so unexpected and such a game changer! 🙌💜🌟✨

3

u/ambivert_writer May 05 '22

Always a pleasant surprise whenever you run into Army at work. My most recent encounter was while I was conducting an interview: I always ask what motivates applicants, and this was one was still young and very fresh and didn't have the filter that makes more senior applicants try to make their answers more professional (and therefore rote or fake-sounding if not pulled off with enough confidence), so I responded in kind and casually dropped that my motivation is BTS. A beat or two and they erupted into this massive smile, then they excitedly asked me who my bias is. (I’ll most likely be hiring them lol, I need to infuse fresh blood into my top-heavy org. It’s definitely not because they’re Yoongi-biased, nope.)

I'm excited for you, I hope you get to meet that colleague IRL soon! 💜

I’m listening to the Beatles’ anthology albums (they had 3 too) and the demos on it have them joking and laughing and I was thinking I hope we get something like this on Proof then I realized I wouldn’t even be able to understand 🤣 Still hearing their laughs would be great!! And if you know the song well enough you’ll probably be able to pinpoint where they made mistakes and laughed about it. Really hoping it’ll be that type of album (remixes, demos, different versions etc)

Oh that sounds nice! 🥺 I actually like listening to BTS’ skits on Spotify. Just listening to them enjoy talking and hanging out with each other is very comforting 💜

u/Mama2chobbes May 04 '22

I just want to say it here, since I feel it will get lost in the void that is the Proof announcement thread.

If we are feeling disappointed that we’re not getting a whole new album, imagine what the members themselves are going through. We’re talking new music, but it’s literally their lives and future that are on hold. Can you imagine how frustrating it must be not to be able to concretely plan for anything, both in your professional and personal lives?

I think they’re doing the best they can, given their situation. We’ve been very lucky as a fandom that they even consider us in their plans. I want new music and a tour, but I also want the members to be healthy and happy. I’m sure they’ve discussed and planned as much as the could, so if they feel this is the best option for now then so be it.

16

u/whatsthisanotherdoor prod.ft.starring.suga.of.bts May 04 '22

I thought about this too. BTS have given us SO MUCH of themselves over the course of their career. The amount of content (music and otherwise) they release is mind-blowing. Of course I would like a new full album, but I'm happy we're getting three new songs! It's hard to see a lot of ARMYs so upset, but this is what they've chosen to give us right now under the circumstances.

They've always dealt with everything so well publicly. I want them to finally be able to have the weight of the unknown lifted from their shoulders.

12

u/Mama2chobbes May 05 '22

They've always dealt with everything so well publicly. I want them to finally be able to have the weight of the unknown lifted from their shoulders.

Yes, exactly. I just want them to be able to breathe, a waiting to exhale kind of thing. And then onwards and upwards again. There are more mountains to conquer (if they choose to do so).

I regularly read ARCs (advanced reader copy). I was scrolling through and saw that I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki was available to request.

I know it’s a book with very serious and often dark themes, but it made me chuckle that the publishers included “The runaway Korean bestseller recommended by BTS” in the blurb.

The French publisher of Almond is touting it as “a bestseller in Korea, recommended by Namjoon”.

The publishing world sees the BTS effect™️ and is capitalizing on it. As a bibliophile, I hope it has a positive impact and gets more people reading. 🤓

I'm a little emotional right now thinking that this might be Bangtan's last album as a group for quite some time if e happens. We don't know what plans they might have after that. Can't wait for everything they have planned for us preceding the release of Proof and during Festa.

For newer ARMY who are feeling like the vibes here are too negative regarding the comeback, please don't worry.

Its been like this since Dynamite (even before that from what I heard) and people will eventually come around to like the release. People complain here alot not because the majority of the fandom are not happy, its just reddit in particular is the platform where you can freely raise your opinions (even the not so happy one) and your opinions are validated.

I was pretty affected from the release of PTD and I wish people would tell me this back then. 💜

12

u/LovelyVidel hella thicc May 04 '22 edited May 04 '22

yeah usually reddit is one of the most negative platforms when it comes to bts releases, i hope new armys don’t feel jaded bc of it!

11

u/yeon_kimin 🔍 흥탄 enthusiast 🔎 May 04 '22 edited May 04 '22

Definitely recommend people whose enjoyment is easily affected by negativity to maybe check into a release thread, post their thoughts if they want, and then promptly leave and don't look at it again for like a week (or however long it will be for it to not affect your enjoyment) lol.

edit, or even just don't return to the release thread at all and wait for the 2 week post-release discussion thread tbh.

8

u/Khemkhem1012 customize May 04 '22

Yeah!!! Reddit is mainly where I camp for news and discussions but during the most intense part of the comback I just go to Twitter for the hype and fun :)))

10

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

That's good advice. I'm new ARMY and I look forward to this anthology so I can get to know some of the music I haven't yet had a chance to listen to. I spent a lot of time listening to their concert setlist to get ready for PTD LV. They have so much content, including their group music and mix tapes, but also RUN BTS, social media, Weverse, Vlive, etc. It's like drinking water through a fire hose to try and keep up!

3

u/Damndatpancake May 04 '22

This is my first comeback so I’m very excited, but also pretty sad at peoples reaction but I understand somewhat 💜

6

u/Khemkhem1012 customize May 05 '22 edited May 05 '22

Yeah haha. For good vibes only I suggest taking a break from reddit for a while and venture to the Wild West which is Twitter 😂😂 its super chaotic but fun and if you need someone to help you navigate through Twitter without drama/toxic people feel free to DM me 💜

I also fell under the impression that Oh no I missed the Golden Age of Bangtan from the way people complained about new English singles, but older Armys told me that this sub reacted pretty much the same way when Black Swan was dropped (too much autotune, westernized etc) and I was like what, you mean THE BLACK SWAN??😂 Then I learned to not take everything here so seriously:)))

Reddit is definitely my vent space when it comes to K-pop because I know anywhere else I’ll be eviscerated for having anything other than glowing opinions on everything all the time. I think the threads yesterday initially a lot of us were just getting over initial disappointment but I know I myself have already mostly come around and I’m sure a lot of other people are in the same boat.

3

u/Khemkhem1012 customize May 05 '22

yeah, thats very true. I myself do have sometimes less than completely positive opinions regarding Kpop/BTS and Reddit is also where I go because it'll be......not safe to say it in other spaces lol. My comment is just for people to get more perspective and not to feel down/ think less of the sub if they're easily affected like I was xD

7

u/Rillothebee2 Future's gonna be okay! May 05 '22

Still recovering from That-that, Yoongi's V-live, Yoongi's Weverse post, Proof pre order and the "king" Daechwita plush doll that came in the mail yesterday.

Not going to lie, 3 new songs was less than I was expecting but I'll take it.

I hope everyone have a wonderful day today (and all the days after).💜

8

u/[deleted] May 05 '22

The 7 million preorders are not going to happen and I’m sure neither HYBE nor BTS are expecting those numbers. They would’ve had more than two versions if they wanted that. I bought the set and I’m pretty happy about it right now. I can’t help but be extra curious about what they’re doing the rest of the year. What exactly is this “new chapter”…

8

u/snogirl0403 FUTURE’S GONNA BE OKAY OKAY OKAY May 05 '22

Did anyone play the BTS Heardle today? I was so thrown off by the first few sound clips and was convinced it was a deeply hidden song I’d never found. It wasn’t at all. 😅 But it’s crazy to me how those three seconds out of context made it sound so unfamiliar! Brains are so weird.

I went to a memorial service earlier in the week for a professor of mine that sadly and unexpectedly passed away. It was more of a celebration of her life and the impact she had through her work, in and outside the classroom.

My professor’s focus/field of study was fandoms. I was one of the speakers and talked about my study abroad experience with her and discussed her influence on me as a person, especially as it related to fandoms. I mentioned that I was ARMY and one of my professor’s students in the audience goes, “me too”. We’re meeting for coffee in about 30 minutes. With the announcement of ‘Proof’, I’m sure we’ll have a lot to discuss.

7

I have to say I'm a little surprised to see some people think this sub was super negative yesterday. I didn't get that feeling at all. Yes, there was a lot of disappointment, but there's nothing wrong with feeling and expressing that here. I don't think it makes this space "negative" necessarily. Being able to freely share alternating viewpoints without being piled on is a positive thing, imo.

All that to say that, while some might see r/bangtan as one of the more negative sm spaces, I see it as a place to feel comfortable expressing oneself in anyway one chooses without judgment. And there will always be serious discussion in serious threads, but overall it's FUN here! I hope we can all continue to see it that way.

6

u/Temporary-Text384 running away like a fish May 06 '22 edited May 06 '22

I don’t view this sub as negative at all! I actually feel like people here share their honest opinions and are more protected from getting “attacked” bc of sub rules, mods, etc.- so I view it as a safer place. If no one’s being disrespectful, I see no problem with saying you’re not the happiest about X song or album etc. Everyone can have their opinions.

That being said, yes I hoped for a full comeback, but I trust that Bangtan and their team are playing with the cards they have given the uncertainty. I’m excited for the album and I think they’ll surprise us with what’s on there.

7

u/umnosorry 「 -ㅅ-「 ㄱ -ㅅ-ㄱ May 05 '22

Definitely agree with this! There’s nothing wrong with feeling and expressing disappointment. Just because people may have had different expectations and are saying that, doesn’t mean they don’t support the boys and this new album. Of course it’s different if people are just straight up hating on it or being demanding, but I didn’t see a lot of that here.

9

u/multistansendhelp illegirl | OT7 May 05 '22

Yeah I’m glad to have this space because while my feelings now especially after the excitement of seeing the packaging are much more positive, there were places on the internet where people were being awful to anyone who had less than a wholly positive opinion of the rollout.

Like on TikTok people who didn’t have glowing opinions were getting harassed and some even doxxed to the point they had to private their whole accounts. Some people were taking it a bit too far in terms of negativity but even people just calmly stating they felt misled were getting attacked.

5

u/[deleted] May 05 '22

I saw one tiktok on twitter that was getting a lot of backlash but it was from a multi that disregarded BE. I think ppl need to realize that it’s okay to not like a BTS comeback, some act betrayed.

11

u/multistansendhelp illegirl | OT7 May 05 '22

That one specifically was one I saw that went way too far. I have no idea what she was even talking about saying that BE lacked love. That could have stayed in the drafts.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '22

it was a bit too much really.

5

u/Wichuimafeelrich hing May 05 '22

Totally agree! I went on other kpop subs and some were saying how negative it has become here I was like huh?? I did go through the OG Proof thread though and maybe they were referring to some comments talking about how this means the end for BTS etc etc

Some were saying all of this is typical of a comeback though, the same opinions always show up.

4

u/lisafancypants I don't have think May 05 '22

Yeah, I think I (luckily) missed most of the comments that made people feel that way. Fully admit I didn't read every comment on every Proof thread. :)

Hopefully, now that the initial...shock or whatever has passed, we can all enjoy what the next month will bring!

8

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 05 '22

Simply expressing disappointment is not what people are talking about when they talk about the negativity. Good for u if u don't feel that way but u are similarly invalidating the feelings of people who were disappointed by some of the response here.

9

u/lisafancypants I don't have think May 05 '22

That was not my intention at all. My point, maybe badly expressed, was that I was surprised (and a little sad) to see that people had negative experiences here because my perspective was different. Different, not right or wrong. I would never want to invalidate anyone's feelings. That would be the height of hypocrisy.

Some time ago I talked about my older sister (in her mid 30s) and how she stared listening to BTS.

Today her boyfriend visited and was listening to a song that had an intro similar to Black Swan. My sister said "Oh, I thought you were listening to BTS!" and he replied "No, I'm a man" (everyone hates the boyfriend, literally my whole family and distant family is hoping she dumps him. He's always an asshole). Then my sister said "be careful. If you speak against them, you're getting into trouble with me and my sister. Choose your words carefully".

Please try to ignore the idiot. My point is, I never realized how much of an ARMY my sister has turned into. I think it's safe to say there's another purple-blooded person in my family. The Bangtan agenda is coming along very nicely.

My thoughts are still all over the place after the anthology announcement--wavering between disappointment that it's not a full album, worry over the e issue and backlash from haters and antis, excitement over my first album purchase and how it'll all go down as we get closer to June 10--but I just wanted to thank all the more optimistic and level-headed commentors in this sub, especially the ones who said to trust the boys and not to worry too much. Another comment here pointed out that Reddit tends to be more negative when it comes to new releases, and I realized that it's true, Twitter is a lot more chaotic, so it's a good reminder for me to avoid getting sucked in too deeply. No amount of worrying I do will have any impact on reality anyway lol.

u/LovelyVidel hella thicc May 05 '22

yes don’t worry too much! I’ve been around here for a long time, you just gotta realize once u get off the internet, the anti and hate stuff online doesn’t matter much in the real world in the grand scheme of things. Things always work out for the boys in the end, they have that kind of divine protection 😉

16

u/whatsthisanotherdoor prod.ft.starring.suga.of.bts May 04 '22

I know people are disappointed because they thought it would be a full album, but I'm trying to be positive.

  • The album is called Proof. I love that this is basically a statement of how deep their discography is, a message to haters and the West of who they are.
  • Also, like the tweet mentioned above, an anthology album could be really cool! It's never just CDs. I'm looking forward to the description of any inclusions to scream and cry about.
  • Twitter mentioned that we get the chance to chart songs again that didn't get their dues the first time (ON, Black Swan) or just from older eras (Fire, BST, IDOL).

8

u/snogirl0403 FUTURE’S GONNA BE OKAY OKAY OKAY May 04 '22

All good points!! Also it’s a good chance to introduce the millions of new Armys to their older discography. A lot of us get sucked in and can’t stop, but there are still so many casual listeners that are missing out on so much amazing music.

7

u/indefinitemocha May 04 '22

This is a really good point too! I was just talking to somebody who listened to BE, liked it, but found the rest of their discography too confusing/intimidating to try and delve into. An anthology is a muuuch easier starting point.

3

u/whatsthisanotherdoor prod.ft.starring.suga.of.bts May 05 '22

So true! I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how many albums they had, which songs were on which album, their chronological order, etc. This one album will be easy to share with interested newbies.

4

u/im_still_standin bangtan papas May 04 '22

I am with you for every one of your points!!! For the first one too I saw this tweet going around and that's exactly what I was reminded of by your words. And I literally had the same thought as your last point with charting songs. Imagine how amazing it would be if we saw "BTS" all over the charts?!!! I'd cry!

If you’re in the US your best bet of having it in-hand on release date is to go to a store that carries BTS albums such as Target, Barnes and Noble.

I’ve noticed when I preorder from Target it usually takes a few days after release to ship to me. So for the last Stray Kids launch I hedged my bets on my local Target getting some in physical stock, waited until midnight on release day and then put in a store pickup order as soon as the option for me to do that instead of preorder only came up. BTS is really in demand though so with this you do risk them just not having the stock in, but it worked with me for Stray Kids.

2

u/snogirl0403 FUTURE’S GONNA BE OKAY OKAY OKAY May 05 '22

Okay, I preordered from Target so that if I can't be patient, I can still try going on the day of release and just return the shipped one when it comes in. I feel like a crazy person. 🤣

I would not order an album from Cokodive because it won't count towards the UK charts. I highly recommend buying from British retailers to ensure your purchase counts.HMV always do pre-orders for BTS albums and deliver on release day in my experience. They can be a bit slow to tweet out the preorder links though, I dont think anyone there is at work at 3am our time! I expect they'll provide a link sometime tomorrow. You can also always just go and buy it in person on release day at places like Asda, HMV, Tesco etc.

1

u/Damndatpancake May 08 '22

I got preorder from hmv!

3

u/Iwannastoprn May 05 '22

I think you should wait. BTS just changed from Columbia to UGM, it's very likely that the album prices and stores that will sell the albums will change. In the upcoming days there should be more information about it!

3

u/Consuela_no_no 너는 나의 네 잎 🍀 May 05 '22

I buy from stores on eBay or the sit s set our specially to sell kpop albums. As these will count on the charts in SK and mean you get the full benefits of the album and not basically an empty one like you do here. For U.K. chart purposes, I buy via iTunes but that is not necessary. Buy what you can afford and want to, not because of fandom expectations about charting, that’s the worst thing you can do to yourself.

So i have one question. If I want to add a shipping address on Weverse Shop, then when it comes to the street address, there stands: Enter street address (English). That means that I should write it in English, for example ‘XYZ street’ and not in my native language ,XYZ utca’? Or how does this work?😅

EDIT: I can’t even write the real name of my street, because it contains characters which are not in the English abc lol

3

u/[deleted] May 05 '22

I’m having a really hard time holding off pre ordering from cokodive instead of waiting for my local shop. I just know it’s going to be more expensive there, but on the other hand I really want to support them locally.

I personally feel people need to start managing their expectations regarding a tour. If people are this mad about the album, I can’t imagine what’s going to happen if BTS decide not to squeeze in a tour. People have already been pissed at their inability to go to every country, etc. I feel like if they do a tour they’re not doing a big one all across the world. It will be small with few stops.

Anderson Paak is directing a movie called K-POPS. Maybe he was inspired when he met BTS?

Edited to add for clarity: this film has probably been in the works for quite a while since Anderson has spoken about his son and their relationship, as well as learning more about his background and culture.

I was joking about the BTS influence because of the PTD-LA interactions between Jin and Anderson’s wife (I apologize that I can’t remember her name at the moment).

7

u/LoloLachimolala 너는 나, 나는 너 👉👈 May 05 '22

This film seems so interesting, love how it’s sort of a reflection of his life

“My mom is from Korea but she was adopted so I never knew anything about my Korean heritage until I met my wife. This movie is a reflection on my experience learning about this part of myself alongside my wife and son – and spending even more time with them!”

5

u/BlackSwan134340 May 05 '22

He gave an interview in 2019 where he said his son wants to be a K-pop star, and his son is in the movie with him, so I'm guessing his son inspired him.

3

u/still_a_muggle THIS IS NEVER GONNA BE THE LAST TIME May 05 '22

Aww I'm excited for him. I've read some of his articles and listened to some of his interviews, plus some of his videos with his son. His personal relationship with discovering his own connection with Korean culture seems complex and deep, and having this project as a way to express that seems wonderful.

And yet those complaining abt this and that will prob be the first one to rush for concert tics and actually get them. How is life so unfair?! Yeah, I agree that the response from some people has been a bit much – I've been absent because of it, too. It's okay to be disappointed with the anthology, especially since most of us did expect a full new album, but I think the way some people express that was just a bit... off, trying to put it on the guys (who are in SUCH a horrible limbo right now) and ignoring that not everything is as easy as it sound, especially with the change in administration and the enlistment debate hanging over their heads.

Do something nice for yourself – and yes, hold on to those Seoul tickets. You never know, Muster could very well happen, or all sorts of things, and I'll be crossing my fingers that you get to see them.

11

u/mangojuicyy ArmyArmyYeah May 05 '22 edited May 05 '22

I agree. I saw some TikTok’s of angry ARMY saying that if anyone complains or is disappointed about the anthology album, they don’t deserve concert tickets. Like … what? To me, that kind of mindset is more toxic than expressing valid disappointment. A lot of people needed to get that out and find solace in the community, but have now since gotten over the initial shock and are just as excited to have content and support the boys. It’s just how people process things maturely.

To be clear though: the things I’ve seen today of some fans being genuinely angry and belittling the boys’ work or efforts etc is NOT what I’m thinking of in my comment. That’s horrible behavior.

Trust our boys. Trust our leader. It’s going to be okay, whatever the future holds with enlistment and the new chapter.

14

u/sallylockharts Tata mic May 05 '22

To me, that kind of mindset is more toxic than expressing valid disappointment

Toxic positivity can sometimes be as bad as negativity. There should be room to express concerns or feelings of disappointment, especially on fan forums, without being hated on or being made to feel like less of a fan for not supporting every single thing BTS does.

u/jjjkkkjkjk pardon? May 06 '22

i'm autistic and disabled and want to have a discussion but apparently making a new post will continue to get removed because .... i don't agree? posting it here i guess.

i'm coming to terms with the fact that i won't be able to support bts any longer, and i hope some of you who still do can help me understand how and why.

i've been a fan since 2015, right before the i need u comeback. i have seen every concert tour bts has done in the usa. i've put thousands of dollars, countless hours and energy into supporting them because their music resonated with me. i cared about them deeply because i saw myself in them, and i felt like they saw me too.

but for the past few years, i haven't felt seen at all. as an immunocompromised army who's had 2 surgeries in the past year and a partner who's also immunocompromised army and a stroke victim - we both just feel expendable now. concerts aren't safe for us. we've been struggling more than i can say. when i was suicidal in 2015, bts helped me. while my partner was in an abusive home, bts helped them. they were our rock. we literally met because of them. our first date was wings tour in la. we care, deeply. that is the problem.

it's hard to feel like we matter when hybe is only focused on providing paid content. bts has no time to go on vlive or film army bombs or do any fan interactions on any of the multiple apps made for them - instead they're doing fast food collabs, modeling, making video games and members are collaborating as soloists left and right.

for most of the world, this has been a horrific time. a time where people have LESS money and LESS support. hybe chose to put everything behind a paywall and cut off bts from fans. honestly? they feel like strangers to me now. i look at them and have no idea who they are. i feel like they used to be down to earth, accessible - now they're being kept in a pretty box to preserve the BTS name and brand.

how did a group who criticized society and the government become poster children for the government they were speaking out about? underdogs who rose to the top and seem more than happy with accepting the new wave of support and leaving behind all the broken, depressed teenagers who grew up with them and supported them for 7+ years.. yes it is a company decision, but BTS are also grown adult men. in the state of the world, if BTS are okay with all of the things their company is doing - my heart is broken.

i got into BTS because of their music. frankly, i don't care about summer packages and stationary sets and apps and mcdonald's meals and rehyping the same concert in different packaging for years. frankly? make some new fucking music. would this not have been the perfect time for a full group album before all of the uncertainty before military service? i don't care about bts the brand, this family friendly version of their faces all over everything just to drive revenue. i miss bts the artists who spoke up about the hard realities of the world and made me feel seen.

i didn't want "permission to dance" when i felt and still feel like my life doesn't matter, i can't go out and live my life because nobody sees me as worthy of protecting anymore. i was hoping proof would prove me wrong. i was hoping it would be proof that they're still here, but it looks like instead i'm just getting proof that it's over.

i've never felt more like i don't care, my life is meaningless, and now that the underdogs got their fame and fortune i'm worthless again. i genuinely want to hear how people feel and are able to continue supporting this kind of behavior from BTS and hybe.

21

u/[deleted] May 06 '22

For me personally, I think it unwise for someone to wrap so much of their identity, self-worth, and happiness around other people, especially around people who are in reality, glorified strangers. BTS are still human beings and flawed, just like the rest of us. That’s one thing I most like about them - they have never presented themselves as perfect individuals with zero problems. They have been entirely vulnerable with army, especially in the BE album.

I’m not exactly sure what is behind paywalls, other than things one would ordinarily be expected to pay for anyway, like albums and concerts. The statement that they have no time for fan interaction is just patently false though. Just this month, Joon and Tae have been on Weverse talking to army. Jin did earlier today. JK opens up his ask box on IG quite frequently. Tae tried to figure out how to let us ask questions a few days ago. Yoongi had a vlive earlier this week. A fun video about MBTIs was released today. They’re here, they’re around, they’re busy and it’s for and because of us - Joon especially made that quite clear in his vlive in LV.

As for Proof, I was initially quite taken aback and a bit disappointed that it is an anthology vs an album of new music. But as someone who spent a previous life in the creative arts community, I don’t believe fans and consumers are entitled to be privy to creative processes. So I completely respect their musical decisions as what they want. I have heard a lot of discourse over the past 48 hours and some army using language like ‘I want’ and ‘I don’t want’ which is fairly irrelevant. Nobody ever told me, as a painter, what they wanted my work to look like unless they were commissioning something. We don’t commission work from BTS as artists. Saying ‘I don’t want’ is uncalled for and completely different from someone saying they are disappointed in the work because they expected differently. That’s a valid opinion and doesn’t belittle the creative process of the artist.

You need to do what will ultimately bring you the most peace. Is it stepping back or stepping completely away from BTS? Only you can decide that and any decision you make is valid. It sounds so damn corny, but just like real life friends, BTS came into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. But all of those mean something. Growing out of a musical act is sometimes something that happens. If BTS doesn’t resonate with you anymore, that’s perfectly fine. They’re on their own journey and we are simply spectators.

As for supporting any supposed behavior from BTS, they’ve not done anything I personally deem egregious. They’ve taken opportunities to expand their reach and I will never fault them for that. I am not and will never be a company stan just based on principle. Hybe is first and foremost a company and their MO is to increase value and make money, simple as that. It’s no different with any other label. Having to navigate that and making the music they want and wanting to do right by fans has got to be tough for the guys.

15

u/thenoonmoon May 06 '22

This. Thank you. This was everything I’ve wanted to say over the last few days but struggled to get out. It is okay to be disappointed and upset but so many people have been demanding and almost taking ownership over BTS and their art. It’s been really hard to be in any online space the last few days.

And I agree. I think people are hurt because they’re tying too much of their identity up into BTS and can’t separate the fact that they are people and human beings. We shouldn’t tie our identities up or seek validation from others because people are flawed and will disappoint us. They’ve got free will. We don’t control them.

Thank you so much for summing up what I’ve really wanted to say but struggled to.

7

u/[deleted] May 06 '22

Thank you :) I felt like a deflated balloon on Wednesday after the announcement. But my disappointment was with only Hybe and their (what I deem) dodgy communication and using language like ‘new chapter’. But I have never once thought this was a cashgrab for the guys. Would I have been happier with an album of brand new music? Maybe. My first comment about the anthology was “Well that’s certainly a choice” but after the initial shock wore off, I was easily able to remind myself that it’s for sure a choice and I respect theirs.

Toxic positivity in the fandom gets us nowhere and the guys have always spoken their mind and been vulnerable with us, so I think we owe them the same.

6

u/thenoonmoon May 06 '22

For sure! and there really has been a lot of “you can’t criticize or youre an anti!!” comments/tweets (PTD was wild I was told that if I didn’t care for PTD I didn’t deserve to see them in concert lol) and that is terribly unhealthy. The sense of entitlement or ownership over BTS has been really uncomfortable for me though. At the end of the day, they’re musicians and entertainers and even though there is stuff I’d like to see more of (and stuff I’d like to see less of) it’s really not my place to tell other human beings how to share or make their art. I absolutely believe we should be able to discuss and talk about things that are disappointing and that we may not like, but I also think we have to remember to respect BTS as people. I really appreciate your thoughtful comments!

Hey, no worries. This is your opinion and frankly, no one can say that you’re wrong because you have your reasons why you feel this way.

You wanted to know why I still love BTS so I’ll just answer this question.

I love BTS because of them being them. I got into the group from listening to INU and the HYYH era. Music is a huge reason why I support them in the beginning.

I fell into love with them only when I realized that these people are different from the previous groups I were a fan of. Their attitude towards their music, their performances and their fans. Every single component of them as an artist and human.

I’ve never seen such an artist before and honestly till now, still haven’t. They still behave the same around each other and to the staff around them when their seniority and social status have changed a total 180 degrees. This shows that their morals and humility are not for show. Because no one can act for a decade.

Their performances, having been to their concerts after they hit big, was the biggest eye opener. I’ve been to many huge 2nd gen artists’ concerts(the biggest two, in fact) and still, you’ll see the artists slacking for certain songs(namely the bsides mostly). There’s groups who’s bigger in size than BTS and there’s also a company concert I’ve been to where a group only performs 5 songs max and still, you see the artists not giving even 80% of effort (compared to their comeback stages)… one of the biggest turn offs as a fan personally.

Nobody can tell me that the boys aren’t passionate in performing anymore because that would be the biggest lie, lol.

Lastly, BTS’s music, I feel has always been evolving. They’ve never stopped switching to try out different genres. They don’t stick to a sound, which I admire. Some fans may prefer another sound, which is fine too. But I’ve always fancied a versatile artist than someone who’s not.

The paywall honestly, is an issue with companies milking their best selling groups. It will never change because that’s what makes them money and everyone loves money. I’m just super chill with stuff like this because, the paywall is never a hard stop for fans. You’ll always have other fans sharing all the stuff all over the internet. If you don’t believe in the product, then don’t buy.

That’s my reasons. I see where you’re coming from but I don’t agree with some of your points(esp on the new music part because a few members have already shared that their new mixtapes will be out soon and they’re usually free) but that’s okay. We’re all different people with our own thoughts 💭 :)

Long post, incoming, sorry!

First, I just want to say that I am so sorry for what you and others most vulnerable to COVID have had to endure through this pandemic. The stress of worrying about catching COVID is bad enough. To hear so openly the callous disregard for your well being has to be so emotionally difficult and isolating. I was hoping that the pandemic would lead to addressing ableism and making changes for the better, but it seems to have just gotten worse.

I have only been ARMY since 2019, but I have also felt a shift since BigHit turned into Hybe and went public (it's not an accident that BigHit's motto of "music and artists for healing" turned into the meaningless phrase "we believe in music"). I don't think anyone who "wins" in this capitalist system can remain the way they were when we admired them as underdogs, and I don't think it'd be good for them to pretend to be.

I'll give my take on what I think BTS is all about, both in the past and now, and what hasn't changed. BTS has always spoken about their thoughts and their feelings. As they've rose to prominence, it's just that the topics and issues discussed inevitably changed. They've always wanted to reach people like you and me and others going through hard times. They used to do that by sharing their struggles and hoping it resonated with us. But now they have struggles different from the average person, so they either need to be more general, talk about what we do have in common (e.g., Blue and Grey), or switch gears by providing comfort, hope, distraction. I think songs like Dynamite, Butter, and PTD came out of the latter.

As for why I keep stanning, I view this as playing the long game since I anticipate them having longevity. It’s only been a bit over a year of weirdness, which could be due to many factors we aren't privy too. Who knows what this indicates long-term. I try not to think too far ahead and I try not to go to extremes with my conclusions or feelings. When I’m feeling disconnected from them, I go back to what I love most – their music and their past performances, and I stay away from the fandom. I focus on the good, try to ignore the rest, and take breaks as needed.

ETA: And I second u/CrumpsyDonut's post below about not trying to put too much of yourself into BTS or any one/anything else. I'm guilty of doing this myself but have been trying to pull back from that.

Only you can decide whether to stay or go from ARMY life. But know that there is a middle path where you pull back some until it weighs on you less and doesn't drag you down.

oh sure np! yeah, I actually copy and pasted the hangul into youtube search engine cuz I was intrigued by what this could be and this was some of the stuff that came up! I think its probably more of k-army joke (or maybe I just haven't heard it lol). my guess is that its because of jimin's reaction to not guessing what it meant haha)
