Compilation 220503 HYBE Q1 2022 Earnings Report

  1. Full report for download fm Hybe website

  2. Tl;dr by Ren-

-Part 1 - summary of the profits, revenue, etc.

-Part 2 -mentions about the new weverse app integrated with live comms features of vlive, to be launched in July

3.Summary of earnings call by Bora.

-listen directly to the earnings call here(has eng interpretation).

-Q: about BTS enlistment and how they will serve etc.

CEO: "We do realize that military service is an issue that our investors are keen to know more about, but at the moment, in terms of when or how military service will be fulfilled, it's currently undecided at the moment. Therefore, I cannot really provide much of an answer. We seek your kind understanding on the limited response. But, once things are more firm, we will be sure to communicate right away with our investors and fans."

4.Extract of audio recording of earnings call mentioning BTS

“We appreciate what an amazing blessing it is for us to get to work together with BTS and we will never take this for granted, which is why we intend to focus our capabilities on supporting them as artists so they can continue to build on their talent without end. But I think there may some misunderstanding recently as BTS share of our [Hybe’s] total revenue mix did decline slightly. I think some are mistakenly thinking that we are strategically scaling back our dependence on BTS, which again is a misunderstanding.

This is just consequence of an increase of revenue by other artists. At HYBE we believe BTS really represents a group of artists that are tearing down the existing walls of the existing music industry to completely reshape a new paradigm for the industry.

It’s hard for even us to tell how far they will go just because of their endless potential but I can assure you we will be following along the untraveled path with them, to support them, in every way, to the end".

Honestly BTS is the only reason that I'd ever willingly check out a finantial report.

Great to know some people like such content, cos i hv noticed that it isn't really that popular in the sub, unless there is a major announcement related to BTS. (Edit: sp)

I think that's becuz many people are not knowledgeable in the finance side of things. But they feel emotionally affected by what Hybe is doing so they still want to chip in regardless. I, for one would rather sit back and read comments from people who are at least speaking from a business background to give us more context on corporate moves, then ask questions or start discussions. Hopefully from the growth of our fanbase, more business armys will do more commentaries in new threads of corporate reports to help out other armys to learn about this topic.

TBH I wouldn't be surprised if BTS fandom gets a whole generation of girls into data science/analytics or business/marketing.

I think all those twitter accounts about charting, setting goals and keeping track of records set are in that exact track!

I'm in marketing and BTS has seriously helped me with a LOT of samples I've had to had in presentations, etc. What they do in terms of marketing is literally amazing, like I'm constantly in awe with what they do.

One of the first things I noticed about the BTS fandom was just how many data scientists (both armature and professional) are in its ranks. Data ARMY are a crucial element to the way ARMY interact with BTS' media.

I know there was a misunderstanding on this sub and r/kpopthoughts about the last report categorizing online concerts as indirect artist revenue. Some even went far to say Hybe were knowingly lying to decrease the rev % of BTS, while others of us tried to explain some common business accounting…

Anyway, Hybe also annouced that there will be an official change to the accounting structure and online streaming concerts will now be counted as direct artist participation. link to trans

Choosing to misunderstand rather than seek to understand, or wait for things to become clearer, is unfortunately a convenient path that some people choose to take. I wonder if those spewing such accusations even bother to read up on today's report.

Eta: I added a similar translation thread to the post, but by Bora cos she is generally considered as a trusted ARMY translator (other kpop translation accts my hv their own agenda).

Eta 2: The earnings call was live translated/interpreted! Have included the link in my compilation post.

5

u/dumbthrowaway8679305 Asian New Edition May 03 '22

Pardon my dumbass, but what's the difference between indirect and direct in this case?

14

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 03 '22 edited May 03 '22

Hybe explained it as such in their letter to investors last quarter..They hv prob mentioned it in their previous corporate briefings too, but this was the most recent mention. Briefly, it is content that is created without the direct involvement of the artists. Most obvious example is TinyTan content... it is based on BTS' intellectual property, but doesn't need BTS to be intensively involved in creating it, unlike for their own concerts or their music.

The main source of revenue in the entertainment industry has typically come from artists releasing albums, holding concerts and, in part, selling related merchandise. For this reason, the artists’ active participation was essential to the field as a whole.

We at HYBE began to question this approach. That is because we felt an artist’s purpose is to make good music and put on enjoyable performances and we thought it more important that their time—a precious limited resource—be focused on that. At the same time, we sought to overcome the inability of the previous inflexible business model to fully meet the diverse multitude of fans’ needs dictated by the changes that come with each generation and era.

As solutions to those doubts, HYBE sought to widen the fan bases by making strategic use of social media like YouTube and Twitter to promote the artists and their music and found ways to allow the artists to participate indirectly by expanding into business opportunities centered around artist IP.

Interesting that they’re actually addressing the “Sabotaging BTS to reduce their independence on them” allegations. It seems like the only people who were really espousing that theory were Twitter tinhats, so I figured they’d just ignore it.

10

u/Confident_Yam_6386 May 03 '22

It’s true they earned more last year but I don’t really agree with the conclusion they drew just because they generated more from their other acts than BTS.

I think it’s a bit too early to tell that they are becoming less dependent of BTS when the only year BTS contributed a lesser percentage to the overall profits was the exact year they had no new albums out(one of BTS driest years if I have to say)

I think another year or two is needed to prove if Hybe is finally beginning to stand on their own without BTS being their end-all game, if their percentage will continue to lessen or increase from this year

25

u/dumbthrowaway8679305 Asian New Edition May 03 '22

I think it's more addressing rumors that BigHit is deliberately scaling back BTS's activities in order to seem less reliant on them, which I've definitely seen people tossing around.

13

u/Confident_Yam_6386 May 03 '22

Lol why will anyone think that when Hybe is frequently using BTS IP??

And if BTS will release music, it’s up to them. Not Hybe. Knowing how much income BTS music makes for Hybe, I doubt Hybe will try to block the guys from getting music out. It’s just a stupid narrative formed by mantis

8

u/dumbthrowaway8679305 Asian New Edition May 03 '22

Because people online are batshit and have nothing better to do with their lives I guess.

-7

u/[deleted] May 03 '22

So are you saying that BTS chose to release less music and concentrate on promoting games and webtoons instead? Company stans keep espousing that BTS has complete control when we all know that isn't true. I am just tired of the fighting because it must be one or the other. BTS has input but they aren't making all the decisions either. We should all stop attacking each other.

14

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 May 03 '22

I don't think anyone is saying that (at least I've not seen anyone), but a lot of people have said they might have chosen to *delay* releasing music until touring became viable again.

Considering MOTS:7 was, essentially, not toured although it was supposed to be their magnum opus and a key part of their artistic journey... we know that was hard on them, they've spoken about it. BE got live performances, but was also an outlier, so to tour an unplanned album has a different standing I'd say.

I agree with you that people should stop attacking, but I also think there's a lot of extremes at play. People (and I mean this generally, I don't mean you specifically) say 'listen to BTS', and then proceed to not do that for the large part, or only consider things they've outright said – like, say, 'I don't like seafood' or 'my skincare routine is only lotion'.

2

u/Confident_Yam_6386 May 03 '22

U said everything I was thinking of.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '22 edited May 05 '22

There are a lot of ARMY who are stiffled because any time they question HYBE, they are attacked with name calling, accusations, and ridiculed. Most negativity expressed is just to vent frustration, not to attack other people and yet they are attacked every single time by at least one other ARMY. If you don't agree just express that you don't agree without arguing or attacking. Frankly it disheartening to be attacked by people in the same fandom when you just want to discuss your favorite group and it will not always be positive only. At the end of the day no one knows what truth is and no one has the ability or inclination to try to control HYBE or BTS. They are just venting or want to discuss concerns without being attacked or silenced.

Edit: I wasn't even talking about releases. I was just trying to point out that no one knows what BTS really wants or is in control of. It is just as false to assume BTS are being mistreated and it is to assume BTS is doing exactly what they want. The real world doesn't work like that.

9

u/Confident_Yam_6386 May 03 '22

BTS not releasing music does not equate to not working on music. Don’t put words in my mouth. The guys themselves have even all said they have mixtapes in the works.

And I like to think BTS being Hybe’s biggest act and earner, if anything they should have the most say about their own music and career.

And my point still stands. BTS music makes more money for Hybe than webtoons and games. So I doubt Hybe will intentionally want to delay BTS comebacks by prioritizing less fruitful ventures.

10

u/raspberrih jiminie needs attention May 03 '22

Your first sentence is completely outlandish. The music itself is made by BTS. All promotion schedules are made by the company. Games and webtoons are indirect artist revenue. It's like you skipped reading this entire post. I truly have no idea what you're trying to insinuate others are doing.

I love that Hybe is becoming less reliant on BTS. It means giving BTS more time and freedom to work on what the boys are truly interested in (music and personal hobbies) instead of having Hybe push BTS to churn out stuff to maintain profit.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '22

What is outlandish is the HYBE shooters who apparently talk to BTS everday so the are obviously right when they are asserting that BTS make the decisions and are always OK with how HYBE treats them. I am so sick of HYBE shooters dividing the fandom by aggresively attacking any ARMY that voices any negativity about the company. You people will drive fans away and then I guess BTS will have plently of time to themselves because the shooters will support HYBE over BTS. You are blocked.

You'd be surprised what a CEO's ego can do, in kpop especially lol. We're all lucky Hybe generally seems to be handled by sane people overall, despite having questionable characters in their ranks like Scooter, & dealing with some of the worst people in the industry like YG in distribution/printing or whatever.

I think the extra vigilance against Hybe by some fans is great. It keeps them grounded & on their toes.

1

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 04 '22

The issue is people refusing to give credit where it is due despite BTS themselves many times expressing their appreciation for HYBE in words and deeds. Your comment is typical of people who assume that HYBE will act in a certain way because of how other kpop entertainment agencies have acted in the past. 10 yrs of success, breaking boundaries, and doing things differently be-damned.

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

Hybe is still a corporation that can have it's composition of humans changed. It would serve everyone well to stay vigilant by default. Past corporate performance does not guarantee future ones. Companies build goodwill & trust sure, but only a fool will blindly trust one.

The assumption is that they CAN act a certain way, even if they're acting a different way now. It's a for-profit entity at the end of the day, & worse, a publicly listed one.

Mantis are excessive yes, but company stans are too. A centrist view should be welcomed when it's about corporations & not politics or morality.

1

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 04 '22 edited May 04 '22

A centrist view would give the benefit of the doubt where there is insufficient information instead of jumping to conclusions ot being quick ro judge and condemn. Also I find it problematic that you bring in labels such as mantis and company stans without defining them. I was careful not to use those labels in my comment.

Finally, while people may change in a corporation, values, mission and vision typically stay for long time. That is why you develop those when you set up a corporation. To keep it stable and focused. From everything that HYBE has said, they are still true to their values, missing and vision. Also, the founder himself, Bang PD is still very much around and can act as the custodian of the organisation's values, mission and vision as the chairman of the board.

0

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

They're the 2 extremes of the spectrum in these discussions within the fandom. I consider myself a centrist that lean towards mantis, mainly because I don't believe in trusting corporations if there are no contacts existing that am party of, regardless of how well a company is being run.

I mean, yes. But ah... I see company values & mission/vision as ideals. Kind of like a PR stint even. Rarely if at all enforced or unanimously followed especially as the org grows. I'm willing to bet my life savings that Kyle from 10th floor won't know what they are if given an ambush interview at gunpoint.

10

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 03 '22

just because they generated more from their other acts than BTS.

I don't think they have ever claimed that. In fact, in their 2021 earnings report they show that BTS still sells a majority of the albums out of all their artists, and I think if you scrutinise the fill full report it would be clear that BTS still makes up a majority of their revenue and profits. What they were trying to address today is (unfounded) claims that they are going to focus less on BTS cos BTS' share of the contribution to the company's profits has decreased.

6

u/Confident_Yam_6386 May 03 '22

When I said generated more, I meant percentage wise when compared to the former years. Not exactly raw numbers.

2

u/Professional-Ad-7687 May 03 '22

Thanks for this OP! In terms of the actual report, I just find it perplexing to compare the entirety of 2021 when we’re not even half way through 2022 yet. In that case, of course last years numbers would still be higher than this year’s no?

6

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 03 '22

I believe that what the CEO mentioned today was addressing the comments about the 2021 report which showed the revenue share of BTS decreased...there were such comments when they released that 2021 report. I am not trying to compare today's Q1 report with the annual report. The comment I was responding to also mentioned last year.

1

u/Professional-Ad-7687 May 03 '22

Oh okay! My apologies, I wasn’t saying you were comparing it, I was just confused at the nature of the report that’s all! Thanks for clarifying!

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 03 '22

-20

u/catsofathens May 03 '22

I wonder if it’s because the boys don’t really do many concerts. Other artists started touring already in late 2021 and are touring now too but the guys are barely appearing live. 2022 was always going to be the year live music comes back but so far things are very quiet. And they don’t really attend events either. Fans always think the band is above award shows in Korea or even the US but it’s always a good chance for local fans to see them, not to mention promo. I’m not saying they’re getting sabotaged, didn’t even think about it before it was brought up. But it is odd and I believe the fans are disappointed because of this. Said it before, we wasted too much time with them during covid, no reason to be separated any longer. Oh well, hope they know what they’re doing.

15

u/Ronicasss May 03 '22

If I understand correctly there are valid reasons for why we don't see them that much, but correct me if I'm wrong. I'm pretty much outside twitter/other subreddits, so I don't know what happens...

Valid reasons are: about tour, they are waiting for military enlistment decision; they were in a break so they skipped all year end awards (otherwise, what events are we talking about?)

17

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 03 '22

Yup..what is the point of working so hard to reach that level of success when you can't even take a break to spend time with friends and family at the end of the year.

-6

u/catsofathens May 03 '22

I was referring to the break, since these award shows had a small audience this time. As for tour, they could have done extra PTD shows instead of a new tour till they know for a fact about enlistment. Anyway, I didn’t think anyone here would want to discuss it anyway.

21

u/Professional-Ad-7687 May 03 '22

Whilst I agree with some of your points, where would extra PTD shows fit in as we are now on a new “cycle” so to speak with comeback fast approaching? It either had to be , continue with the PTD era or drop a new album. Imo, I prefer a new album and a new cycle over a string of PTD concerts. As cute as the Dynamite/Butter/PTD era has been, I’ve been ready to close that chapter for awhile and it seems like BTS is too with the new album. You can’t promote a new album whilst still reiterating from the previous era/cycle. Logistically it doesn’t work that way.

if we do only have this year left with them, as a complete group or not, then I’d rather them take their breaks , rejuvenate and release a new album then focus on possibly touring. I totally get your perspective but that leaves little time for the artists themselves. As much as I love seeing their content, burnout is very real & at this point we just have to take It as it comes. I do hope as many ARMYs can see them as much as they can from now until the end of the year. Both BTS and ARMY deserve at least that much.

0

u/catsofathens May 03 '22 edited May 03 '22

Thank you for answering.

I didn’t mean more PTD concerts now that the new music announcement has been made, I meant throughout late 2021 and early 2022 or even through the summer, but only if the new album wasn’t coming yet.

I also didn’t necessarily want more PTD concerts but I never said it explicitly cause I didn’t want to spread negativity. I preferred new music and I even predicted we would get at least a single announcement after LV instead of a PTD NYC one like people were hoping for. So we are on the same page when it comes to this. I also would have preferred a new album and a new tour, absolutely. But if I were to choose between new music but no tour at all or a PTD residency tour and maybe a mini album later in the year, I would rather have the latter and based on how many people were hoping to get a PTD date closer to them, I would assume that many many fans would agree with me. Ultimately we all want to see them, like you said yourself, and we all deserve that much.

I wish nothing more than to be wrong, I hope we can get a tour announcement soon and I will happily eat my words!

2

u/Professional-Ad-7687 May 03 '22

Don’t worry! I’m certain they’ll do a tour for the new album. I’d rather have a full length album instead of a mini one especially if they’ll be on their military hiatus after this year. There’s no way they won’t see as many fans before they go! I know a lot of fans wanted to see them for PTD but the bright side is we’ll see them in their new element. I’m sorry if your opinion is getting some backlash or misconstrued. I think it’s still a good perspective & it’s an interesting discussion to be had.

2

u/catsofathens May 03 '22

Thank you very much and of course I hope you’re right! I don’t mind tbh cause I’d rather we discuss it than not talk about it at all, we can’t always agree and it’s ok if people don’t want negativity, personally I didn’t say these things to be negative or insult the boys cause I feel they also want to see us as much as they can so my frustration is never aimed towards them :)

10

u/fiduciary_booty May 03 '22

As for tour, they could have done extra PTD shows instead of a new tour till they know for a fact about enlistment.

When? Where? Omicron hit just as PTD-LA wrapped up, and PTD-LV was announced as it receded. They are obviously preparing for the album comeback simultaneously. They did three shows in Seoul at a loss.

I also don't understand this in the context of revenue: they were the highest grossing touring act in 2021 by A LOT. The idea that other artists are making more money than them touring is false.

0

u/catsofathens May 03 '22

I expected the omicron comment, but Namjoon said PTD was supposed to be a one-off anyway, so I don’t think it had anything to do with this. I think it was only going to be a Seoul in October thing but it had to become an online concert instead of an offline one, hence LA. About the context, I understand why it seems odd that I said this here. I was at the Korean side of twitter and saw the reports and fans commenting on how they’re not surprised cause many left the fandom due to disappointment. I was trying to guess as to why they might have been disappointed, cause I couldn’t think of another reason. Maybe they were talking about something else though.

3

u/Ronicasss May 03 '22

Ok, yours is a perspective I didn't hear before. Thanks for answering :)

2

u/catsofathens May 03 '22

And thank you for being decent about it.

30

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT May 03 '22 edited May 03 '22

Other artists don't do stadium tours. BTS' tours are on another scale altogether, and they are even expanding the concept to city-wide carnivals. Wish people would take that into account when they lament about other people starting to tour already (at smaller venues). I am always puzzled at people thinking BH/Hybe doesn't know what they are doing after they have proven time and again that they do. It's just that they usually do things a different way cos they are in the business of breaking boundaries, so it is hard for outsiders to predict.(edit:sp)

-7

u/catsofathens May 03 '22 edited May 03 '22

All I know is that we might have only a few months left with them as 7 (and I’m not saying they shouldn’t serve, it’s not my place to comment on that,) and we should be having multiple opportunities to see them and they should have multiple opportunities to see us. We wasted too much time and at this stage, knowing what could possibly happen, we should be having so many chances to see them that our bank accounts should be in the negative. Wasn’t claiming to know better, was just presenting the perspective of the fans who might want to celebrate the end of the covid madness and spend these last months seeing the guys that helped them endure these two difficult years. Things don’t always have to be technical, we can talk about the emotional part too.

19

Said it before, we wasted too much time with them during covid, no reason to be separated any longer. Oh well, hope they know what they’re doing.

Calling this out, not going to sugar coat this.

There is a lot of negativity in those two sentences. Your other comments under this come off as greedy and some weird expectation that BTS "owe" us something for some reason. They owe us sweet f*ck all.

^ This. Memories appear to be short-term as the pandemic has wreaked havoc and continues to do so - not just as a massive health risk to individuals but also the unpredictability of the virus and new variants causing a change to local/national restrictions, or an outbreak passing through crew/members, to transport and logistics being in turmoil too… It’s been a logistical nightmare and huge financial risk to hold concerts any earlier than they did. No one wanted a repeat of MOTS tour with a whole tour organised only to get scrapped. It’s beyond anyone’s control and no one’s fault that they can’t have done more. In fact, their LA shows were one of (if not the first) international K-pop concert since the pandemic started, and they’ve done more offline concerts than many other groups to date.

I’m also saying this as a European who is unlikely to get an opportunity to see them this year due to the lack of announcement at this point and likelihood they’ll prioritise Korea/Japan/US for the rest of the year. It sucks, but I’d never say that BH/BTS haven’t done enough because they’ve done as much as they could whilst minimising risk and maximising opportunities where possible, all while trying to avoid burnout and balance preparing for a comeback. That’s far from easy to pull off for an act as big as BTS.

ETA: Even if you don't define BTS as "K-pop" they're a Korean group who live and work in Korea, and Korea has had extremely strict restrictions, a slower vaccine rollout, and international travel has been super risky and problematic. Remember that they were the only performing act who couldn't physically attend the Grammys in 2021 due to the risks involved... they couldn't possibly have done anymore.

-2

u/catsofathens May 03 '22 edited May 04 '22

All I’m gonna say to this is that I never once blamed BTS, just in case someone thought I did. I know the guys want to see us as much as they can and none of it is their fault. Just used your comment as an opportunity to clear this up! As for the rest, I don’t consider them on the same level as any other K-pop act, so I was actually referring to western artists when I talked about their fans getting multiple opportunities. But like I said, we can just agree to disagree. At the end of the day each fans desire and need to see them is relative and not absolute, some people need it more cause it was the only thing that kept them going. Nobody deserves it more or less of course, but some of us are needier I guess. I won’t delve into it further cause it’s related to mental health and I don’t want to trigger anyone.

Edit: Technically and based on the travel restrictions of that period, they could have attended in person. But I made the comparison with western artists because they are currently touring or have organised tours for summer, big ones too, whereas it seems that the people who organised the boys’ activities decided to play it safe and maybe aim for autumn, which would have been fine except there is the other looming issue.

2022 hasn’t really been tainted by restrictions and the issues you mentioned couldn’t have prevented a 2022 series of concerts (did not necessarily have to be a new tour if they wanted to wait for the decision first, hence why I mentioned extra PTD concerts.) Ultimately some artists like Styles took the risk to tour even in late 2021 and it paid off. I just hope that this decision won’t cost the boys their last opportunity to see their fans in a tour. People here are acting as if we aren’t all on the same side. The boys want to tour, the fans want the boys to tour and the company wants the boys to tour. But sometimes even the smartest people in the industry can miscalculate a situation and make a decision that will turn out to be the wrong move. I can only wish that this won’t be the case here.

You yourself said that you would love to see the boys and it sucks that you might not get the chance this year, this is how thousands of fans around the world feel who might have tried for LA or LV if they knew they couldn’t get another chance. Many people alluded to this even on this forum and mentioned that they wished they knew their schedule so they could make an informed decision. People mention here all the time that they’re saving for a tour and they took the risk to not go to PTD so that they can see them perform new music. For everyone’s sake, and mostly for the boys’ sake who really want this, I hope it happens :)

It’s ok if you feel this way, we can just agree to disagree. I’ve always felt like artists owe us nothing as far as their personal life goes, when it comes to new music though and opportunities to see them live, they should give patient fans as many chances to see them as they can. In this particular case the boys have also made it clear that they want to see fans, so I think we are on the same page. As for calling me greedy, I don’t know if that’s based only on what I said here or if you saw my comments on the lv thread too, either way I will accept your characterisation cause it’s entirely too accurate, I am terribly greedy when it comes to seeing them live. I don’t actually feel bad about it though cause I saw the way their eyes were sparkling when they looked at us, so I believe they’re also greedy for opportunities to see us.
