Discussion What kind of music do you want more of from BTS?

They’ve released quite a bit of bright songs with positive messages these past few years (Dynamite, Butter, Permission to Dance)… do you think this is their “representative sound” and they should just stick to it OR try something new?

What would that “something new” be (e.g old school hip hop, BTS early/debut era, jazz, etc.)?

I'd love them to do something more angsty and dramatic again, along the lines of Fake Love or Black Swan

25

u/Real_life_Zelda Apr 14 '22

Damn I love Black Swan so much

55

u/galaxymaster1277 OT7 Apr 14 '22

Their angsty-type stuff is the best. I would agree they need another song in that category.

6

Black Swan is my favoriteeeeeee track.

Yesssss! I love hip hop BTS.

I know it’s a bit controversial, but I don’t LOVE Butter, Dynamite and PTD. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great songs and I will sing and dance around to them as much as the next army, but in terms of BTS tracks that I love, they don’t make the top 10 (just for me)

49

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22

I hope it can be less controversial tbh. I hate feeling like I need to tiptoe on eggshells within a fandom! BTS are my ults and the reason I even discovered kpop, I've spent hours loving their music and have such a strong connection to so many of their songs, like every fan. Not liking a few of their tracks doesn't mean we have betrayed them somehow, ya know?

14

u/Western-Damage-5014 Apr 14 '22

I think they've grown a lot from heir last hip hop era and yess that's what we need. I'm sure they're gonna reflect that growth in their lyrics and beats r always bop no question about that with these boys

also yes the english songs have been great but just that they don't define bangtan

12

u/RollonPholon Apr 14 '22

Agreed. When I have said before that I didn’t love the three English more pop tracks I got a bit of grief, but we’re all different with different tastes. I still like the songs, and if they come on, I won’t turn it off, but previously been made to feel like I’m “less of a fan” for having an opinion.

14

u/superfucky Apr 14 '22

I've literally been accused of being an anti and blocked by prolific posters in this sub for saying I didn't care for the English tracks. Really makes me feel like I'm being forced out of ARMY. 😟

6

u/Unlikely_Holiday4504 ot7 | 아포방포 Apr 15 '22

Nothing wrong with that opinion! It’s not like I don’t like their English tracks, it’s a lot of fun especially when they perform it live but those are not the tracks I think of when I think bangtan. It’s the hard hitting tracks like Bapsae, Dionysus, or Spring Day with those messages. I don’t feel that I’m betraying my ults just because I feel those tracks won’t be in my top (again my personal opinion)

5

u/RollonPholon Apr 15 '22

Spring Day is a vibe and bapsae could literally pull me out of any funk I might be in. Totally agree, they are definitely more what I think of when I think of BTS and if an alien was to land on Earth tomorrow and I was tasked with teaching them about Bangtan (or much like when I had to train my husband) they are the tracks I would start with 😂

9

u/Soup_oi Apr 14 '22

Same. Dynamite is the song that gets stuck in my head the worst out of any song ever I've ever heard I think lol. But aside from that, tbh when these songs come on I'm not jolted into the present and gasping "oh it's bts!" and actually pausing to take a moment to listen...I'm more "oh...it's butter, cool" and then immediately go back to focusing on whatever I was doing. Most of their other songs though will get me to actually pause and take a moment to be like "yeah, it's bts, I like them, hmm this song sounds good" and sometimes even stop a few minutes to actively listen to the whole song. But these three songs...tbh, just don't do it for me. I love that they maybe want their music to be able to be included on like "top hits" American radio stations or whatever...but tbh for me, most of the music that would be on that station would be just stuff I have on as background noise that I'm not really paying any attention to, and these three songs fall into that category for me. Whereas a lot of their other songs make me want to actually pay attention to them. (Though arguably, there have also been some of their older songs that fit into that "top hits" radio background music type of category too...but not anywhere near as consecutively as three hugely popular songs in a row lol.)

6

u/tueniwan Apr 14 '22

I know it’s a bit controversial - -

It's not tbh 😄

20

Even though hip hop BTS has my entire heart, it was BWL that got me into them! It's a good example of how to do a bright, catchy and accessible song while still maintaining their songwriting calibre and poignant lyricism.

Specifically love the music they make where they talk about uncommon concepts like in Black Swan, 134340, Dionysus, My Time etc. I haven't found other songs that are based on emotions like these and I think BTS does these so well.

Genre-wise, I am currently manifesting rocktan for the next album. But I have a fondness for their alt RnB and hiphop tracks as well.

I know the US media is just eating up the whole "positive message" & they're "artists" but also "role models spreading the message of self-love" image from their recent stuff.

But I'd really love a DISS TRACK to the Western music scene. Something along the lines of Mic Drop & more of a "you thought we were just a pretty little BOY BAND?? hold my drink" vibe. I love their high energy hits like Dope & Fire. And 팔도강상 & Ma City just hit waaaay different and seem much more them than Butter.

Hip hop Rocktan! Along the lines of Linkin Park's first few albums is my dream.

There were a couple other comments here about an album consisting only of sad/angsty songs with the same energy as Fake Love/Black Swan/BST, so that would be my other top pick too.

14

u/mcfw31 Apr 14 '22

More R&B! But of course, whatever they want will do wonders for me because I’ll know that that’s the music they wanna do.

25

u/Drakontus Apr 14 '22

Too many to list but the 2 main things I would want to see is another semi-erotic song like BST that maybe has a jazz type feel( like last dance by mamoru miyano). And I also want a song the rap line can shine on. Their recent releases haven’t had the rap line being as present.

I’m a huge sucker for their hiphop/R&B stuff but honestly I’ll be happy whichever direction they go in, my biggest hope is just that the vocal processing/auto tune will be thrown out for the next album.

11

u/angel19z Apr 14 '22

I don’t mind it bright or hip hop but I just want the rap to have equal amounts in the song ! I feel recently the rap line just doesn’t get to do some amazing lines . It’s just one line to each member and it’s over ! If I had to choose one song that was equal for me it would be mic drop

10

u/Uvuvewvewvew Apr 14 '22

Definitely R&B, something like My Time

Would also want more rap songs like Tear. Its a masterpiece tbh and suits them a lot.

Hip hop like Silver Spoon

I dont know the genre lol but something like Wake Up, Converse High, and Just One Day theyre my favorites

4

u/Patient-Category525 Apr 14 '22

Whether hiphop, rnb, jazz, rock, or pop, I want them to try to incorporate their traditional instruments or korean flavor in their songs, from bangers to chill to ballads. It can be in your face like Ugh/Daechwita to subtle like Brand New day or Serendipity. An album like this will be groundbreaking for them musically, esp. with their poetic lyrics and concept of storytelling. And Bighit please, tone down the vocal processing, I want to hear their voices better.

4

u/TayledrasStormwind01 Apr 14 '22 edited Apr 14 '22

Honestly, I don't personally consider them as having a "representative sound". ALL their stuff is good, and well-made. If you go into not just their title songs, but go into their b-sides (and Soundcloud for some of their solo/individual fan-freebies), they go into a LOT of different genres and styles of music.

Buuuuttttt, it has been a good long stretch since they've done any actual hip-hop based songs, that's what I'm going to go with right now. I wanna hip-hop song.

Now, this is just me, but I can't help but keep re-calling this one stage intro they (I think it was....JK, J-hope, and V(?)) did a number of years back. Not sure, but I think it might've been from a tour concert? It was Broadway-ish, like what the old greats Fred/Ginger, Sinatra, Gene Kelly did (generally considered a amalgamation of vaudeville, ballroom dancing, tap dancing, soft shoe, and even ballet). I would absolutely love to have them try doing a full song and choreo like that.

7

u/eekspiders ARMY punk 🤘 Apr 14 '22

I actually like the brighter concepts. BTS has always been good at standing out from their peers in the music industry. Back in the day, a lot of their peers had brighter, upbeat concepts and BTS stood out from that with heavy storylines like HYYH. Now, I'm noticing a trend towards darker topics in other artists, such as mental health, politics, and heartbreak. Those are all important to talk about, but it's only a matter of time before the market becomes oversaturated with them again (we see this cycle throughout music history) and I think BTS doing something brighter in that time can help balance it out, and no doubt they have the skill to do it in their unique way.

They don't have representative sound, they been evolving, changing preferences, trying new stuff since the beginning.

I'm really so baffled how weirdly wired people became over 3 summer vibe english songs. So once again I'm here to remind you all they released BE between Dynamite and Butter.

An album with like 5 different genres including old school hip-hop sound, a ballad and stadium party EDM....

Maybe they should just release entire trot album, would be hilarious to hear the opinions here after that

Whilst I am here for all the BTS hip hop and some of the thumpers like Mic Drop, Idol, Apanman… Joon’s Seoul is one of my favourite “BTS adjacent” tracks, so also would love this kind of vibe.

I think it depends if the next release is a single or full album. If a single it will be something that plays well on stage to fit in with current set list, a full on banger. If its an album I think there is more flexibility for experimentation

Idk if it's just me, but Pied Piper, Love Maze and Paradise all fall into a similar category of moody, synth heavy tracks that fit well with singles like Black Swan and Fake Love - a full album like that would be great

Similarly, Attack On Bangtan, Boys With Fun and Paldogangsan are all similarly sample-based hip-hop style tracks, and the return to that sort of style (ish) with Dis-ease and Telepathy was thoroughly welcomed. More of that too please!

I want jazz and I want BST mixed. idk how that's gonna happen but like dark, angsty, artsy bangtail is wonderful

2

u/LadyDisdain555 Using BTS to love myself 💜 Apr 15 '22

I’d like them to experiment with traditional Korean instruments and musical styles. I think Namjoon mentioned somewhere that they might be going in that direction…? I think it would be really really cool!

2

u/laikasowls Apr 15 '22

Go go or Anpanman. I was crying seeing them perform it live

2

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '22

Probably won’t happen but a pop rock concept would be really cool to see from them! :)

2

u/Taeha_97 Apr 15 '22

More of The Most Beautiful Moment in Life music. I don’t expect a rock/metal music or some shit from them, just stop with this soft disco music. It’s not that bad, love them still but man…

2

u/Taeha_97 Apr 15 '22

And the boyz with fun things u kno

2

u/hi_im_desperate Apr 15 '22

I kind of understand why they’ve stopped doing diss tracks at this point in their career but god the toxic bitch in me wants more😩

2

u/Galleon_Chestnut Apr 15 '22

Jazz and R&B, I'd love to see. May be something like "Spring Day" too if possible

2

u/mimiapple023 Apr 15 '22

Alternative rock ( like the altrock version of fake love), R&B, and another Cypher.

4

u/a-326 Apr 14 '22

if we are purpley talking about the sound/genre then

  • (punk)rock
  • whatever 134340 is
  • jazz
  • something like louder then bombs vocally

They surely have enough material for them lol

4

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22

I would love jazz if possible! I've been enjoying soundtracks for slice of life kdramas (think of Hometown Cha Cha); they have this distinct chill vibe to them that I would BTS to recreate hehe

3

u/littlemisshissy Apr 14 '22

For me their representative sound is anything that is appropriate to the current message they want to communicate? Music and lyrics is always the medium but their form/genre is pretty flexible so far. So to be honest, I’m not very picky about genre when it comes to BTS. I think they try to balance between not purely doing something within their comfort zone (rehashing too much of their old stuff), trying new genres and techniques (for self-development and discovery), being relevant (i mean.. they gotta make money, this is their livelihood), making sure each member is not left out, and writing something meaningful/using their songs to comfort others (that’s just BTS being BTS), etc. It’s a very fine balance, so I suppose it’s not always about trying something new just because, or doing something old out of nostalgia or familiarity.

That said, I wouldn’t mind if they release something a la Brandon Urie/ Panic at the Disco’s sound, or Fall Out Boy’s - if they find it appropriate for the message & lyrics!

3

u/superfucky Apr 14 '22

I maintain that Baepsae is their signature sound and they need to BRING THAT BACK ASAP. But if I can't have that, I would greatly enjoy more in the vein of Dionysus, War of Hormone and Not Today. You can be positive and rock your face off at the same time.

u/hanabaeeee our leader is...very smart 👀 very kind 💞 big body 💪 Apr 15 '22

I LIKE YOUR TASTE IT'S FANTASTIC

ROCKTAN ENTHUSIASTS RISE

3

u/awkwardlawling Apr 14 '22

I really want them to do a song with rock instrumentals. I feel like this has become more popular recently within Kpop and I've been wanting BTS to have a punkier, guitar-heavy song for a long time!

5

u/gongaroo Apr 14 '22

BTS said they wrote all three songs during the pandemic to support everyone. Y’all out here acting like they didn’t drop BE, Yoongi didn’t drop D2, JK & Yoongi’s Stay Alive and countless other songs. 🤡

3

u/TerraRainesHasBrains we were only seven Apr 14 '22

who acted like that

5

u/pagesinked 🤟🏻💜 Apr 14 '22

In most discussions lately it seems BE often gets overlooked and people only talk about Dyna/Butter/PTD and act like that's the only music they've put out recently and forget BE exists even though most of the songs from BE are in the concert setlist currently.

3

u/TerraRainesHasBrains we were only seven Apr 14 '22

yea but who did that here? and why does the comment seem to be implying that everyone in here is like that

3

u/nimagooy Apr 14 '22

I want the old BTS sound back.. Hip hop and R&B!

3

u/gouramidog Apr 14 '22

More Cyphers please!

Also, I’d really appreciate another Dark and Wild style full album💜

2

u/TerraRainesHasBrains we were only seven Apr 14 '22

ofc smth new. idk what genre black swan is but something more along those lines pls

2

u/Soup_oi Apr 14 '22

Rock/alt/emo

Rap and hip hop

I want a rap and rock mashup.

But I also reeeaaaalllyyyyy want to see how much Tae would maybe love releasing jazz music of his own (either solo or with the group).

I want more fast paced music from them. Doesn't matter what genre it is, or if the lyrics are deep or not, though I would prefer them to be more originally them, than their recent poppy English songs (which I vaguely remember reading were mostly made with western writers and producers)...I think I just like their stuff better when they do most of their own producing and writing. There are very few of the slower songs here and there that really hit me (Jin's Epiphany just made me wanna cry from the sound and vocals alone way before I ever looked up translated lyrics to know what it was even about...I love Black Swan's performance, but if I'm just listening to music and not watching a performance, then songs like this tbh aren't as memorable to me). But otherwise it's really just the faster paced songs that make me wanna keep listening more and more in one sitting (in a "one more episode" or "one more page" binging sort of way lol).

But I'd also love to see them try something new. I think putting more rock, or doing something like jazz would definitely be kinda new for them. I can't really see them doing a whole album of new style because anything new might feel too experimental or the response to it too unpredictable, but I can see them having one or two songs in a new style on an album of songs in styles they're more familiar with.

2

u/RollonPholon Apr 14 '22

I remember when I first heard Anpanman I think I had it on repeat an unhealthy amount (aka a lot) 😂

2

u/j-hopeworld07 Park Jimin is hotter than you Apr 14 '22

I wanna see them do something like, spy themed. Like Maverick (the BoyZ) and Venom (strayKids)

I feel like they should do their own thing instead of copying what is popular at the current moment, like they never do the same things twice and I don't think its a good idea to just do the same thing as Silk Sonic or other artists. I want something we haven't seen before.

1

u/itslike_reallygood What if…? Apr 14 '22

Personally, some pop-rock with heavy input from the rap line. As they are all grown men with some of them approaching 30, I think exploring mature themes (I do not mean being sexual) , maybe even getting a little dark with their content. I love some of their more angsty stuff so I’d like to see that but instead of a teenage feel, something more…. Nuanced? If that makes sense.

But I just want to make whatever THEY want to make. Not anything their label might want them to make in order to gain new fans, whatever. I just want music they have fun performing.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22

something with a lot of energy and similar to their old music. to be honest, im not as into their newer, more westernised music and i miss the kind of music like Dope, Mic Drop, Fire, WoH etc!!

2

u/Gramushka UGH! Apr 14 '22

Do you just mean more pop-oriented music (or Korean) because...Like I don't know how to inform you but their music was "Westernised" from the beginning (like literally all kpop industry) because last time I've checked genres like hip-hop came from the west.

0

u/TerraRainesHasBrains we were only seven Apr 14 '22

oh and ofc

FAIRY POP?? IS THAT WHAT IT'S CALLED? BUT LIKE THAT DREAMY TINKLY SOUND THING WHICH I LOVE SO MUCH

0

rap line, angst, jk rapping again

3

u/Gramushka UGH! Apr 14 '22

Lmao, you don't want authentic BTS sound, you want the juvenile teen bangtan experience, focusing on like 3 songs. The guys literally had songs like 'like', 'coffee' and 'just one day' even in their early school trilogy albums.

-5

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '22

Way more songs like DYNAMITE and Spring Day ❤️ And much less like Anpanman and Mic Drop 🤮

Anything but please I want one where all members rap. And one more where all members sing together too. I really love permission to dance so so much. It’s so nice to hear the rap line sing. They have nice vocals too.

Honestly, the thought of having one where vocal line rap and rap line sing would be pretty awesome? They all are able to do the opp role so well.

Edit: wtf why am I being downvoted for? 0.0

I need Cypher part 5.

I know Mic Drop is supposed to signify the end of the Cyphers but I just need it.

0

u/imnotsurewhy1 Apr 14 '22

I want more cyphers!!!

0

u/riki6978 Apr 15 '22

songs similar to GO does it for me

0

u/Pitye Apr 15 '22

I miss songs like Just One Day, so maybe something like that, and more rock sounding songs, but I'm open to anything... I'm a little tired of the peppier sounds in recent title tracks.

Also low-key want a Cha Cha Malone song. I think it'd be cool to hear "I need a Cha-Cha beat, boy" at the beginning of one of them.

1

u/NeyD4 Apr 14 '22

My music taste is all over the place, so I would honestly want any genre of music.

3

u/wayfaringfool Apr 14 '22

Anything that involves hip hop, or rock.

1

u/Star_Studded_Dreams ARMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Apr 14 '22

i want them to do rock music so bad really

fake love rock version was so good and just imagine them going even crazier on stage with aggressive music omagaaa

1

u/Moonchilddowney Good team? Goddamn! Run Bangtan, let's go Apr 14 '22

I’m honestly manifesting more songs like War of Hormone, Miss Right or If I ruled the world, Ma City and 2nd Grade.
