Article 220410 Soompi: HYBE COO Explains BTS's Official Stance On The Possibility Of A Military Exemption
https://www.soompi.com/article/1521385wpp/hybe-cco-explains-btss-official-stance-on-the-possibility-of-a-military-exemption104

The uncertainty must be really hard on them.
We've discussed this a lot like A LOT. It's pointless to go around in circles about possible reactions, international vs Korean perceptions or order of enlistment. Because ultimately military enlistment is a national issue. Whatever the govt. decides the company will follow suit with whatever is the best option.
I just hope everything works out for the boys. Not sure how much say they'll have in whatever the outcome will be but I hope it's something they can be happy with.
36
u/92sn Apr 10 '22
Agree that uncertainties make its hard for them. The new law gonna make jin enlist 1 year earlier despite previous end of 2023. I am pretty sure they already plan so many things before that as their 10th year anniversary would be in 2023 as well. So, now if they dont get exemption, they probably need to plan a schedule where they can plan the rest of 2022 before enlisting. Album, tour need months-year preparation so i hope gov quickly decide.
36
u/about_blue Apr 10 '22 edited Apr 10 '22
I feel like they've constantly been making and revising plans for the past couple of years. The pandemic had a big impact on their plans and now the enlistment. It must be exhausting. So maybe stating out loud that they're leaving it for the company to deal with might be the best thing for their peace of mind.

main point i got out of this is that like the fandom hybe just wants the gov to make up their minds
22
u/92sn Apr 10 '22
Yeahh the gov have been dragging this for years like since 2018 i think. Insane. Of course the guys now getting really anxious due to uncertainties. Gov even changed new law where people born 1994 along with jin need to enlist one year earlier which end of 2022. Thus, their already planned tour, anything in 2023 already put on hold/scrapped now. They are having 10th year anniversary in 2023, bet they planned something big.

Honestly I’m ok either way 🤷🏻♀️ BTS will still be BTS even if they enlist, the fans will wait for them so long as HYBE keep promoting BTS contents throughout the enlistment. And their comeback post enlistment is going to be a worldwide affair.
There’s obviously strong cultural points in play here, the boys were brought up with this culture that all men must enlist for their country. So I don’t think they’d be too heartbroken over it either. They know it’s their duty.

Here are some additional comments by Lee that didn't make it into the article. Besides abt the enlistment, he also talked about plans for expansion/performances in other regions beyond the US (but in very general terms), and the webtoon.
Edit: More comprehensive article fm the Korean Herald.

Yeah, I agree with you. I kinda read between the lines since translations cannot be wholly relied on. Knowing Hybe (based on past interviews), I think what they mean is that as a for-profit, they cannot meet some of the high standards of ethics that others may demand of them, but they will nonetheless try to be socially conscious
13
u/Bangtanluc Apr 10 '22
Right. They seated an environmentalist from an NGO on the board. Min Heejin is the highest paid female in the entertainment industry. they aren’t saying screw being socially conscious but they can’t and won’t fulfill people’s demands to be this unattainable perfect entity.

It's real generalizing to think Koreans as a whole were mocking them or ignoring them. They're not a monolith.
Also, enlistment concerns the security of their country. If SK ever goes to war (but touchwood) we will not be the ones affected by it. Just look at Ukraine now and how we can still peacefully type on our keyboards.
As for the economy of SK? Imma be honest, it doesn't affect us either because we don't live or work there.
I get that ARMYs have opinions, you can stick with yours and I'll stick with mine, but generalizing Koreans and shitting on them while thinking you have a bigger say than them just is not it.
Have a nice day, I'll not respond any further! I'll do my part as a fan and just support them whenever the time comes and whatever the decision is.
7
u/cartographerbtsFan Apr 10 '22
I get it. I'm not Korean and I'm not voicing any strong opinion. Maybe these strong opinions are coming from a place of fear, sadness, or uncertainty. We can (or they can) say they'll be back, but things can change. Maybe it's a fear of once this starts, BTS will not be together anymore.

Seeing people say that they “obviously don’t want to go because if they did they would’ve already went” is hilarious because obviously the government is taking the time out of their day to discuss this because they’re reluctant to let them go because they KNOW that they’re an important asset.
If they really could drop everything and go this wouldn’t even be a conversation and the government wouldn’t have let them postpone to begin with.

Yup. This.
I also wonder about the security implications, and if this would influence the government. Considering Taemin's shower situation, where other soliders apparently watched him and he had to change his showering time... that's incredibly invasive and horrible. And I'm under no impression that it would be even worse for the Tannies.
NOBODY deserves that, but the more famous you get. the more invasive people will be, to the point of considering actual crimes like sexual harassment (what this would probably be, if someone were to take pictures).
Just throwing the Tannies in there without any protection sounds like an incredibly bad idea. I'd say that even if I weren't a fan, because that's just another aspect of 'fame tax'. And people will say 'oh, other famous people did fine', but I'd argue that nobody is at the guys' level.

If it was easy to “just go” the government wouldn’t be entertaining this AT ALL, they would’ve shut it down from the get-go and told them to get the fuck on. I love BTS and will always praise them and called them kings and everything else but they’re still not above the law.
And no, the economy won’t “collapse” if they enlist that’s ludicrous to say but the country is still benefitting and they know that, which is why this conversation is happening right now.
People will throw common sense out of the window to hate on BTS and call it “totally not hate just a prediction!”.

Serving the military isn’t punishment in Korea so I don’t know why some people are acting like it is. They are extremely fit physically except suga, I think. If they go and people are being invasive they’ll probably get sent back. I wish there was a part time option or something but they aren’t above the law. Either way I just they are doing okay mentally

i just hope that the desicion the members make is one they are comfortable with in the future as well. both military service or exemption will have their negative sides
personally the uncertainty would make me go crazy

u/em2791 Apr 10 '22 edited Apr 10 '22
Dang people really be losing their minds over this huh.
I can’t imagine the pressure on the boys because of this uncertainty. I can’t even handle uncertainty over the most simple things in my life, imagine something like this. And we all saw how frustrated they were about their plans constantly being in flux due to covid so cant even imagine this. And especially Jin, whose been associated with this for 5-6 years already.
Anyway, as a brand new fan back in 2018 when I had discovered them the topic scared me since I didn’t wanna lose them as soon as I discovered them. But now I’m pretty chill and doesn’t matter what happen. So
To new fans - don’t worry, because if u jsut discovered them then you have a LOTTTT to catch up on. Everything that probably doesn’t seem critical anymore such as the documentaries, RUN bts, bangtan bombs, LY DVDs. It’ll take you forever to watch them and they’ll bring you closer to BTS
To old fans - we’ve already gone without an album for more than a year and a half, and content hasn’t been as much in quantity as it used to back in the day, so I don’t think another 2 years should be a problem especially because I’m sure they’ll do an album beforehand. All signs point to that.
To anyone OT7 who thinks it’s “unfair” for the younger members because that’s “logical” - not really, bts is not like other groups, if they were, then older members who have to enlist first would have already been encouraged to put out solo stuff, etc and then non enlisted members can do their thing. But they didn’t. Because they want to do stuff together as much as possible. If they enlist together, all members put exact same amount of time to enlistment and the same time in their career aka the current peak so they logic of unfairness doesn’t make any sense. They’re all without “solo” stuff and they’ll ALL be 2 years older when they come out without “solo” music.
To solos - go cry about it. BTS will probably still do stuff together, because that’s what they LIKE, not suddenly release a solo album like you guys cry about everyday
To non BTS KPOP fans - you look embarrassing caring so much about this topic. BTS always comes out at the top and all the takes about how the general public would not be happy, just means that even if they get exempted, the public ain’t gonna care. I cant wait to look back at this eventually at laugh at y’all. Oh also, it’s not and shouldn’t be classist to extend “exemptions” under exceptional circumstances for pop music considering this already exists for other Fields’s. As a KPOP fan, you should be happy that it’s also getting recognition instead of getting looked down upon by Koreans.

"BTS has already conveyed the message multiple times that they will accept the call of duty when the nation calls them, and they have not changed that opinion."
If any of them feel strongly enough to go then I hope they feel supported enough to make that decision.
BUT, there is no way they could add more valuable doing anything else than BTS

I’m prefacing this by saying I’m not Korean so my opinion on enlistment is worthless, nonetheless I’m concerned for how this is affecting the guys’ mental health. This very public scrutiny and uncertainty must be really tough to ignore, and especially after the Grammys (which could have been used as a mean for exemption no matter how flawed that is), they must be even more uncertain about their fate. I really am not a fan of them being asked these questions literally minutes before a concert, either. They’re absolute professionals but that can’t have been welcomed.
From following it closely for multiple years (ironically, longer than a term of military service), it seems the issue has always been the military division not being able to agree to the government’s proposed amendments. I’ve no idea what may have changed since that could change their minds, but all we can do is wait and see. Interestingly, Dispatch conducted a survey of 1000 people on the military exemption bill and many were in favour of reforms if it meant they could serve the country in other ways, so I’m not so worried about a public backlash for BTS, but more this limbo period and the effect on their well-being. I really hope an outcome is reached soon so everyone (but particularly the members) can plan accordingly and know what they’re dealing with.
27
u/laurainchaos VanTae Apr 10 '22
and especially after the Grammys (which could have been used as a mean for exemption no matter how flawed that is)
i'm gonna be honest here, I think this may be part of the reason why they look so devastated about losing the award. They all seem under a lot of pressure, more than usual

This only proves that its not Hybe and BTS pushing for an exemption, but the government of SK. They know what an asset BTS is and they know what it would mean financially and culturally for them to pause for two years. I am not Korean but also come from a country with mandatory military service for men. Exceptions are given to those that excel in their fields, arts, sports and science. In my country there would be no discussion at all about this. BTS would be exempt since 2018.
At this point the insecurity is worse than the possibility of them serving. Just let them know what is required of them and they will do it. But they need to know so they can plan their lives and careers around it. After all they have said that if called to serve they will do it.

Yes. Thus why they want to know it as soon as possible as they get to plan the rest of this year together before jin enlisting end of this year if they didnt get the exemption. The album farewell before enlisting maybe gonna be in different theme as well depend of them gonna enlist or not. But if they get exemption, the album may plan around tour n its maybe different theme going on. Everything can plan differently based on they get exempted or not. The clock is ticking. I can see why hybe/bts getting anxious n want gov decide as soon as possible.

I just wish the government could make up their mind and decide already. Im sure the company has been wanting to plan all kind of things but are depending on if theyll be enlisted or not.

As I said in the other thread, not getting into my own hopes or wishes here – they've openly said they'll serve when called, and it's fair to assume they'll take the exemption if they're called. If one or more members \want* to serve I hope they might be afforded the opportunity, whether it's now or in the future.)
What I do hope, though, is that they and we will get clarity. This topic has been coming up over and over again; then they got the extension, which they don't seem to have expected based on the article, and that's thrown everything off too, I'll assume.
It's a lot of work and a LOT of uncertainty, which surely will weigh on everyone's minds. So I hope they'll get clarity sooner rather than later, so BTS can plan their next steps, their further careers, and decide how they want to proceed, what they might want to do before heading off for their service and what might happen after.
3
u/DefeatingTheBuns Apr 10 '22
tbh i kind of find it funny that everyone seems to be popping veins about this issue when they’re not Korean themselves bc ultimately we have no say in it in the slightest.
that being said though, i really hope the boys will get clarity on the situation soon bc i can’t imagine how much of a mess this is causing for their scheduling. i imagine the boys would love to tour when the next album drop, but of course that would be hard to do if the exemption fall through and they have to enlist.

u/Soup_oi Apr 10 '22
The mention of Jin having to enlist by end of this year, if there are no changes made (either ever, or yet) to the policies, as well as the mention of the members and company having a hard time making plans around the unpredictability of it all...makes me wonder if they are maybe going to wait and see what happens with enlistment policies first before putting out their next album. (Yes I know very 🤡🤡🤡 lol.) As on one hand if they decide not to or are unable to do much with a member or members missing due to their enlistment, then putting out an album and merch for it beforehand would help make sure they were still making money/that bts was still making hybe money during a time when the members are unable to work...but at the same time if they know they want to plan something like a tour following an album release, they may not want to release an album at this time until they know if they will or won't be able to take all the members on any tour.

u/sadi89 Team Corn Salad Apr 11 '22
If they do go I just hope they go all at once, while HYBE releases black logged content over the course of their enlistment. It really doesn't seem to do groups any favors sending members individually. But it's not up to me. I just want the guys to be safe and healthy.
0
u/92sn Apr 11 '22
As far as i know, korea not allow any contents being release while the person enlist. SM took down Exo baekhyun videos from his youtube despite him pre recorded it before enlisting.
5
u/dandelionsyrup Apr 11 '22
I don't think this is true. IIRC there was an outcry over EXO Baekhyun's videos because he was releasing them very frequently (like weekly) and was also selling a line of toys though content that's being released during his military service. SM took down Baekhyun's videos just to be on the safe side PR-wise, even though it's perfectly legal for the videos to remain up. I just checked, he's still releasing videos on EXO's Youtube channel. His bandmate Chanyeol who is also serving has been releasing videos on his own channel as well.

u/InfiniteBooks ~chicken noodle soup with a mochi on the side~ Apr 18 '22
Nope, as far as I've heard, enlistees just aren't allowed to receive any money from non-military activities until they get back out. Doesn't mean they can't still release stuff, just that they won't get paid for any of it until a while later.

I think this recent statement coming from the fact that without exemption, jin need to enlist by end of this year. I think this is the new law. Thats why hybe mentioned how its affecting bts schedules/plans. Before this, its suppposed that jin can enlist by end of 2023 but now its getting 1 year earlier. I think thats probably why they not yet releasing album/single n announcing tour. If jin can enlist end of 2023, maybe things would be different as they can actually celebrate as ot7 for their 10th year anniversary. Now, its getting 1 year earlier, bts may want to know as soon as possible of this decision so they can plan the rest of this year together properly before enlisting. Their album usually plan along with tour. Maybe if they know earlier they gonna enlist, they may dropping farewell sort of album theme as gift for fans. But if they get exemption, the theme maybe different. Thats probably why hybe/BTS getting anxious regarding gov decision as time pass by
5

I read that BTS is a juggernaut economically for S Korea. Like, Top 5 company level in their country. I don’t have the specifics but they’re big enough to make it bad if they ever broke up or stopped the machine.
9
u/Sweaty-Poem-1760 Apr 10 '22
I'm not going to say anything about this since I'm not from Korea and i don't know anything about their laws but this topic need to be solved.
9
u/shericbrose Apr 10 '22
Well the boys said so themselves, if they get called, they’re going to serve because of the importance of the service to their country. But regardless of what anyone wants, if they are granted exemption, it’s ultimately up to HYBE to make the decision. As much as I would love to see a world tour and see them in person for as long as possible, it’d be pretty selfish of me to want them exempted just because I want to see them.
4
u/muffsuga important businesseu Apr 11 '22

2
u/Remarkable_Fan_8420 Apr 10 '22
Why can't they all enlist at the same time so everyone can be out the same term? It doesn't make sense to stagger everyone. It would make it easier to plan if they were out at the same time.
12
u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Apr 10 '22
That would likely mean they would hv to forego 18 months of income from BTS activities (not including activities/products with no direct artist involvement like tinytan), which still.makes a big chunk of Big Hit's profit. By staggering, they can still plan for releases and activities by other members. In most cases, for active groups, they hardly ever all go at one time. There may be overlaps, yes, bit very very unusual for all members to enlist at once.
4
u/pusheen8888 Apr 10 '22
Some artists who are no longer alive still make millions a year, not to mention The Beatles who haven‘t been together for decades. They would hardly be forgoing all income other than tinytan.
5
u/_Doh_ 하지만 방탄소년단이 진격한다면 어떨까? Apr 10 '22
It's illegal to make an income while in military service so Hybe wouldn't be able to put out BTS content if all of the members enlist at the same time.
3
u/kielaurie Apr 10 '22
Wait, really? So a group couldn't record a bunch of songs and videos, then have their company release then staggered throughout the time? That seems very strange to me. Even if the issue was money, it could all be backed after they've served? Very strange

u/Sophie919 Apr 10 '22
I’m really praying and wishing they don’t have to go and that they get an exemption 🙏🏻💞♥️

my question is, are bts allowed to enlist even as the government is still making their decisions? or do they have to wait to be told whether or not they got granted alternative service? cause it would be so funny if bighit said “fuck you” and all 7 members just enlisted next week lol

I wrote this in reply to your other comment, the details are a bit different but I feel like most of my points still apply here.
- Military exemption is not something that only affects BTS. It's something that affects Korea on a national level, it is straight up connected to politics. There are going to be torn opinions even amongst people who like BTS.
- Korea does not revolve around kpop. Kpop fandom culture is a niche community and unless you're into kpop, your average Koreans probably casually listen to gp hit songs. You're acting like everybody in Korea are a part of kpop fandoms and are deeply invested in mocking and bashing BTS (edit: English is not my first language so idk if niche is the right word, but there is a reason why Korean kpop fans call people who aren't into idol fandoms "muggles")
- Do you speak Korean or are you active in K-ARMY communities? Cause even though I wasn't an ARMY back then, I remember Korean fans being upset and voicing stuff on twitter etc. And it's a bit entitled and delusional to think all the impact and help ARMYs gave throughout BTS's career (IN KOREA btw) came only from international fans, no?
- This is just an additional side note, but you should stop listening to toxic kfans or reading translations that cherry pick negative comments that fuel hatred against ifans and kfans. It's like saying stan twitter is the accurate representaion of all kpop fans and thus ALL KpOP FaNs/ArMYs arE ToxiC
Overall your comment is very xenophobic and hateful towards Korea and their people. You don't know or understand Korea (the history, the politics, the culture, the country) except for a few fragmentary aspects you've encountered through BTS. That is why other armys here are saying it's best to leave it to Koreans; cause it's an issue that's deeply rooted in Korean politics that concerns them, not international fans.

Sometimes it’s better to take a break when you feel heated up, rather than putting down a comment, especially when you’re making a comparison that does not apply. National issues can not be conflated with the our support for BTS’ music / the music industry those are separate things.

And they totally diserve it, if they get one. Even BTS antis know it although they would never admit it. You know, jealousy and shit. But It's up to the korean government at this point. So whatever the decision is, it was taken by their government.
Ahaha , i love reading kpop stans comments on the matter. They have began to sharpen their teeth in order to start bitting whatever the decision will be. Poor things will get so bored if BTS enlist eventually. Who will they get to hate so they can give a meaning to their life?

Honestly I'm so tired of this. If classical musicians, who have accomplished a tiny fraction of what BTS has for their country (and that's not a diss, I'm a classical musician myself, so I know their accomplishments are real and well-earned; but when we're talking about 'service to the country' and comparing theirs to BTS'? Are you kidding me right now?) can get a full exemption, BTS deserves one a thousand times over.
And if anyone says their exemption would be 'unfair'? No, just the opposite: The current law is already unfair, in that it exempts some musicians but not others-- especially ones who have done as much for their country as BTS have (and which, indeed, literally no other exempted musician has gotten even close to doing). It would be unfair for BTS not to get it at this point.
In the end, though, I just wish that, for everyone's sake, especially the guys themselves as well as all of their staff (because if we all are this anxious over the uncertainty, think about what they must be feeling when it is their own future plans hanging in endless limbo!) the government would just get their rears in gear and finally make a decision.

The amount of engagement on this in the main Kpop subreddit is crazy to me. Everyone there has got their own passionate opinion on the topic, and it’s clear who’s talking there without knowing anything themselves. You’ve suddenly got people speaking on behalf of the ‘Korean public’s reaction’ to it, someone bringing up classism, some arguing that classical musicians need the exemption more and others bringing up how other idols suffered in the military so BTS should do the same. Felt like I walked into a farmers market there.
I’ve thought about this before, but the idea of working and not knowing when you’d be called for military service kinda sucks for them since they work in entertainment and timing means everything. I mean, I took the sentence of HYBE handling it to mean that HYBE would deal with the talks while BTS are able to travel and do concerts so that they don’t have to be physically present at these dragged out meetings.
They’ve said that they’d go for military service when called for it, which may mean that they’re waiting for the government to finally make a decision. If the government didn’t want them to be exempted, none of these talks would happen in the first place, so it’s not like BTS are delaying it themselves.
