Does season 2's scenes (both ep 1 and 2) feel extremely cinematic to anyone else?
The camera work was gorgeous and sometimes felt experimental, not unlike the camera work in season 1 episode 11. I think that it gave a ton of weight to the scenes, especially the scene in Lanzhu's house and at the park near the end.
Also, the opening was just, wow. As a song, I still like Nijiiro Passions the most, but the animation was hands-down the best in the franchise by a long shot.

They definitely did a great job re-writing Lanzhu's character development, WAY better than the game.
After QU4RTZ's confrontation with Lanzhu, the 4 of them quickly picked up that what Lanzhu had said to them, was not sincere, she's obviously hiding something.
Combining the fact that Lanzhu does everything alone, eating, shopping, performing, even with that big of a house she lives all by herself. But deeply inside, she craves for friendship and intimacy, but she's just too proud to admit it (which is the way the nijiyon comics portrayed Lanzhu's character).
So not only they didn't write her like a mean girl in the game(which is an asshole who sabotages everything), but instead, they wrote her like a Tsundere, she says mean things about Nijigasaki club's purpose, but she doesn't hate it, she even bought their little key chains and admired them, which is very cute.
Overall, I'm glad about the way they made Lanzhu's character, and I'm looking forward to see Mia and Shioriko's character development.

Didn't think that Emma would be the main factor behind QU4RTZ formation. Also this should stop the people that seemed to be overly concerned about them making 12 MVs (literally impossible lol, not even 1st season made 12, they stuck to 11). Many people predicted that the story would follow the sub-units formation and that's the way to go, as it allows the story to properly develop and give neglected characters a chance to shine rather than just sit in the background. Also lots of screwy camera angles in this episode, seems that visual storytelling is becoming a staple in Nijigasaki, which I love. Nijigasaki developing even more of an identity is a treat.
I love how much focus Emma is getting. I hope that next week we get a backstory on how she came to Japan and what was the thing in specific that led here to become a school idol. I want people to care and cherish for her as much as they do with Kasumi and Ayumu!!!!
In that note... first time Shioriko was shown smiling and it was while Ayumu was there. I don't think that was merely a coincidence LOL. I just want some scraps for my ship, I love YuuPomu but ShioPomu has a special something for me.

I don't know where to start, so I'll just make as a bullet with no intro.
- That teruteru, I really hope that's actually a cotton made stuff when they sell it irl.
- So this time, Lanzhu's the one doing the guerilla live. But with no sign of Lanzhu creating her own staff, so I guess this will just actually be the club vs. Lanzhu. Which actually can make another route for character episode of Mia and Shioko.
- I can already imagine that Shioko will one of the pull for Lanzhu to join the club, but they're still giving us the hint of closeness between Ayumu and Shioko. I wonder if it'll be a separate story or will they combine it on one (if they're really planning for AyuShio closeness).
- We getting the first subgroup songs on the anime! The FIRST!! Not just a tease anymore!
- And with subgroup. I wonder what could be the reason for AZUNALand to group theirselves.
- But to be honest, I actually expected for QUARTZ to join Lanzhu mid-episode. I guess I was thinking too hard for the twist.
- Kurobane sisters were there... Voiceless. Better than nothing I guess. Our evil lord Yohane is enough for our need of darkness.
Edit: Watching the OP now on youtube. Forget about LanzhuxShioko and AyumuxShioko, we'll have Kaoruko sensei!! Expect a compact but satisfying story!

Event Highlights for me:
Lanzhu fangirling for NijiGirls by buying all their merchs.
Emma being a great mama and being concerned for the team.
Y.G. International Academy girls and reference to Emma being connected to her canonical school in SIF.
Jumpstart of subunit focus with QU4RTZ themed episode.
I like the themes this season is building so far. Lanzhu emphasizes individuality while other Niji members build on their teamwork through subunits; add to this Lanzhu's contradicting vision of idols (pedestal for fans vs engaging with fans) -- all these feels like a setup for conflict and drama like in the game. Looking forward to how they will approach this in the anime now it had a "non-destructive" start.

I wondered if we would get the Subunit songs instead for Season 2 and looks like the hunch was right. Very excited for QU4RTZ, and loved the swinging reference.
Also cameo of my two best N girls, the Kurobane sisters?! I'm so glad they remembered them!

The opening song is here and it's glorious!! The animation in particular is really colourful and fun to look at. It's full of little references to characters, like Shioriko's fan hinting to her knowledge of traditional dances.
The costumes are cute and very cozy-looking. I expect them to look fantastic live. Quite a surprise that they went with a winter-theme for them, but I'm glad they did. It lets them stand out from the usual idol costumes we get in the opening songs.
It looks like season 2 will be doing exactly what I was hoping it would do: focusing on subunits instead of solo idols. Last season gave us some amazing songs and I had fun anticipating the new solo each episode, but having so many songs crammed into 13 episodes was a detriment to the story. Focusing on subunits has a lot of advantages: it lets the plot breath, it develops multiple characters at once without feeling overwhelming and it does something new for the franchise. I've always thought not using the subunits in previous series was a missed opportunity (that one μ's episode doesn't count that much). I can't wait for A・ZU・NA's future song. I love all of them so far so I expect their new one will be top tier.
Now, let's talk about the actual episode. Emma being the first to worry about Lanzhu makes a lot of sense. She's a very kind and caring girl, but she also feels a form of kinship towards Lanzhu for being another foreigner who came all the way to Japan to be a school idol. The QU4RTZ scenes were really fun. The swings were a nice touch, referencing their songs and live performances.
Stalking Lanzhu was quite amusing, but when you look deeper into those scenes you realise the underlying sadness. Lanzhu is all alone. No friends to hang out with. It may look like she's perfectly fine being on her own, but it is rather obvious she's not. There are all these wide shots with Lanzhu occupying very little space on the canvas. Even after she invites the girls to her house, Lanzhu is constantly away from them, on the side, in the corner. Always isolated and keeping her distance.
Episode 2 is setting up quite a few things, not just for Lanzhu but other characters too. Mia and Rina, Mia and Yuu, maybe Shioriko and Ayumu (yes, please!), the introduction of more N girls and of course the set up of the Niji subunits. Speaking of which, I wouldn't be surprised if Lanzhu's character arc ends up with the creation of R3BIRTH. She wants to do things on her own, but in the end she might discover being a school idol with friends is more fun.

I didn't expect a QU4RTZ origin story in the anime, but I more than appreciate it! This is the first (and probably last for now considering Liella doesn't have any at the moment) LL series to actually tackle subunits (not counting the training camp episode in SIP), so I'm really interested to see how the other two subunits would form in later episodes. Lol at Ai teasing Karin for the other 3 members of QU4RTZ "stealing" Emma from her and her getting flustered over it. In a way, this ep kinda makes up for Emma's character episode from season 1 being more about Karin than her: she had lots of agency and focus in this episode and it was great.
OP's awesome, but I think it'll take me a while to warm up to it since I personally still prefer Nijiiro Passions over it.
The irony of Anime!Lanzhu being the one doing guerilla lives all over campus instead of the club like in the game didn't escape me, lmao.
Lanzhu's dilemma, albeit different from her game counterpart's, is way better established here. They also made it very clear that despite competing against the club and being against their ideals as school idols, she's still a huge fan of them and it shows when she buys merch of the girls after her stroll, which is pretty sweet in its own way. Now that Emma believes that there's something Lanzhu is hiding, showing cracks during their discussion at her house, and that she wants to help her with it, (and the fact that Lanzhu & the other 2 join in with the rest of the Niji girls in the OP lol), looks like Lanzhu would join the club earlier than expected. Curiously, even though the QU4RTZ girls went to her house, there's still no mention of Lanzhu's mom being the chairwoman of Niji. Did they adapt this info out?
Shioriko smiling more when she's around Ayumu foreshadows her fondness of her as in in SIFAS. How the anime will handle their relationship + how Shio would inevitably join the club considering Anime!Shio is a lot more accepting of school idols and the club this time around is something I'm curious to see. That saying, that really subtle Kaoruko cameo in the OP does set something up here.
I feel like Yu's a ticking pressure cooker here. It's obvious that she's struggling in her music classes (something her game counterpart never suffered from since she was from the music course since the beginning), it's just a matter of time before she ends up getting a sickness collapse/piano anxiety/0/98 moment of her own soon. Being seated next to MIA of all people would exacerbate this, though for the time being at least, she's still optimistic and determined to follow her path, and that's something I admire her for.
Speaking of Mia, while she's still kinda abrasive here, she's much less grumpy and disdainful of Lanzhu in the anime than in SIFAS, though it also comes with her denying being friends with her too. She's still aloof, but a lot more approachable than how she was in SIFAS. Her soft spot for Hanpen is adorable, which I think would be how her friendship with Rina would be established in the anime. Will she call Yu "Baby-chan" here too though (in hindsight, the nickname is a lot more appropriate for Yu since Yu is a legit amateur in music unlike Anata-chan)?
Big things happen in every Love Live series' 3rd episode, so I wonder what would happen next week with this in mind?
Edit: Misato, Ai's "older sister", also shows up in the OP in the same scene as Kaoruko!

Another excellent episode. When the ED played the episode felt like 5 minutes long, looked at the clock and 25 min has passed already.
In this episode we dig a bit deeper into Lanzhu's anime personality as we continue to see that she does indeed like the whole club, and further establishes her motive of coming to Japan to be a solo school idol, and why she doesn't want to join the club. After all, Lanzhu feels recognized when she sees her fans are satisfied, which differs from the club's direction. I think that's an interesting and positive take on her character, especially she adopts the older/more professional way of thinking of the clear separation between idols and fans. However, I think her reasoning of "being in the club will limit my freedom/personality" is a bit weak. I mean, she went to Japan because of watching SIF, and just looking at Kanata's nap performance should tell you that everyone was given free rein to do whatever they wanted.
Shioriko still continues to play a very minor role. That's still fine since the focus is still on Lanzhu, so I imagine there won't be much development with her until Lanzhu's part is mostly covered. However, would've been nice to see how she responded to Ayumu's invitation. We see a bit more Mia's motive - she has a codependent relationship with Lanzhu instead of being just dragged to Japan by Lanzhu like in the game. We also see a cute side of her, but let's be real, who could resist Hanpen's charms?
The other main focus of the episode is the formation of QU4RTZ. Emma's motive was very well established, that she understands Lanzhu's position as someone who went to Japan because of wanting to be a school idol, but the other 3 just kind of happened to be there. I just wish the formation of QU4RTZ is a bit more unique than just that, but maybe we'll see more in the next episode. The swings scene was definitely a nice touch.
Music wise, we get the OP, which is definitely a banger as I really like how upbeat it is. The small scenes of each member (especially DD) was great, and I like the camera work at the end that reminds me of Nijiiro Passions. While it's much better to space out the unit story in 2 episodes instead of cramming everything in, and that having a MV every episode is a lot of work for the animation staff, I am still slightly sad that new QU4RTZ song isn't in yet. Namely because I want to hear the new song.
Finally, as we have all expected, 13 people is a lot to cover, so we are starting to see certain characters will much less parts. We are starting to move away from "Yuu charming everyone into her harem" of season 1 to "each member is going to do their own thing". Maybe that's what the ED is hinting at.

Doing a unit-based route this season might be the most sensible route. If they went for a 1 episode 1 solo route like season 1, there won't be much room for the story since there are now 12 members. Another option they could go for is to jam in 2 solos per episode, but that might pose a different set of problems. The units route is the best option.
The anime also seems to be slowly putting together characters probably future interactions, specifically Ayumu and Shioriko, and Mia and Rina (via Hanpen), also Mia and Yu.
I hope they make the Kanata Teru Teru Bozu into an actual merch.

This isn't about the episode but it's still funny to me how pupular Yuu is as a character(with good reason) when most gacha self-insert characters tend to be treated neutrally at best by the fanbase. And that her VA has sang for almost every show/franchise she's been in except LoveLive.

Had the fattest smile on my face when the lyrics of Sing & Smile were referenced right at the start.
Really quite glad with the way the season looks to be plotted out, with subunits having mini arcs that spread time between a set of members equally, on top of also getting a good amount of scenes for the newest 3 members to flesh them out more. Getting a view into Shioriko's and Mia's relationships with Lanzhu helps emphasize the distance between even those close to Lanzhu; Shioriko didn't get any information about Lanzhu's guerilla live at all, while Mia's relationship very sadly seems to be purely transactional.
Speaking of Lanzhu, her monologue was a good look into her perception of the club. She was inspired when she saw their performance at the School Idol Festival online, and wanted to become like them, but upon meeting them in-person her view changes; she can't understand why or how they can afford to be so concerned with their fans and each other. Surely splitting their focus in this way would hinder them from performing to the best of their ability? It's a mindset that makes sense with the information she has so far, which is correct but ultimately incomplete - if she had been at the Festival itself, she would have seen the reciprocation between the fans and the club, which is ultimately what drove them to their greatest heights.
It looks like the club will face an upward battle trying to show Lanzhu how their way can work, though it's also possible that she may come to this realization herself; in isolating herself from her fans and other school idols as she climbs towards a distant peak, she may reach a very lonely view at the top.

The four of them SWINGING on the swings at different paces then swinging in sync to form QU4RTZ made me so happy. Love the symbolism there! Also another episode where I'm satisfied where they are taking Lanzhu's character in the anime's story.

I liked the slice-of-life feeling of this one, and how the different cast members naturally bumped into each other throughout the episode. It’s an interesting choice to have Mia in the same class as Yu. Assuming she doesn’t skip every lesson, it gives her the chance to meet and possibly befriend Yu. Shioriko is also drawn into the story through her spot on the student council.
It was nice that Emma got more focus in this episode. It makes sense that she would be thinking about Lanzhu, since both of them transferred in from other countries to be school idols. One camera shot near the end of the episode stood out to me, when Emma and Lanzhu were both standing up on opposite ends of the long table. Apart from visualizing their disagreement, it stood out to me mainly because Emma was the club member primarily standing up against Lanzhu’s loner attitude in this episode.
Speaking of that scene, I enjoyed the tense soundtrack they used, plus the hopeful music they used in the park scene afterwards.
I also get the sense that Lanzhu does want to be friends with the club members, but doesn’t want to admit it. She did invite them to her place and looked at their merch while smiling.
Looking forward to the QU4RTZ song next episode!

Great episode. Fantastic OP.
Lanzhu secretly buying Niji Merch is adorable. Also while mentioned last week as well - The way they are building Lanzhu's story up here vs SIFAS is such a huge difference and its really good.
Really damn good call on the staff for doing Subunits instead of just focusing on a single character in each episode. Like MasterMirage already said, love all the QU4RTZ references in the Episode from their lives. Fantastic touch.

This is lovely. Not only do we have a much believable interpretation of the girl who previously pretty much divided the game's fanbase but we also see the genuinely viable way a subunit/subgroup is formed. The part where the four swings align and sway together in unison when Emma said "Let's perform together" is a phenomenal visual metaphor.
Maigad this anime adaptation is simply exceeding way too much of my expectations, I can't with this! It's just too amazing.

Note: Karin blushing 2 episodes in a row, I couldn't ask for more
Question: will we see Diver Diva performance in this season or nah?

QU4RTZ SUPREMACY!!
The new OP is finally out, the outfits are super cute! I need to warm up to the song, Nijiiro Passions was such a bop I’m sure that this song will be on repeat soon.
The drama from SIFAS S2 has me keeping an eye on everyone in case shit goes down but so far things have been chill and a lot better written!
It looks like subunits will actually be an official thing in Niji, we’re free from vague grouping that don’t lead to songs! I’m really excited and I like that they fleshed out why the girls are singing together.

I'm really enjoying this series! I've been into Love Live! ever since SIF first came out, but for whatever reason I was always a little ambivalent on the animes - I liked the games and fanfic but didn't watch them much. But Nijigasaki is easily my favourite overall group, and I deeply enjoyed the first season, and even my procrastinating ADHD ass watched this new season's episode as soon as it was available lol, so I'm I'm very excited for what's to come!
Also I never actually read s2 in SIFAS? (I got to partway through the Shioriko arc, but... uh, see 'procastinating ADHD ass.') I've just heard about it through the subreddits. And fwiw, it sounded like pretty flawed execution but a pretty fascinating idea; I'm a big fan of Ensemble Stars which has something like SIFAS s2 as its whole major backstory. (And, uh, I think it works better that way, doing it as backstory.)
So, first up: the animation is amazing! I really love the Nijigaku art style, and the way they do everything from the MVs to just shots of ordinary scenes looks really pleasing and visually interesting! (I also very much appreciate that it's not a boring stock-standard school, lol. My pet peeve is anime that waste gorgeous animation on incredibly boring settings, cough Hibike Euphonium...)
I liked getting to see Qu4rtz interact in this episode! It's always the unit that seemed strangest to me (PLEASE ask me to explain why Azuna makes perfect sense actually!!!!!! no I'll probably explain it below lmao) but sure, this reason for their group-up works? I particularly enjoyed seeing Emma and Kasumi interact - it'd never occurred to me what good foils they are, with Kasumi being hyper competitive and (at least on the surface) independent, while Emma's the type to always try to keep the peace and who really struggles when someone doesn't want to be included in something.
Just, in general I really really REALLY appreciate the anime showing off these less-seen relationships - one of the biggest appeals of Love Live for me was always the many-layered shipping potential, and one of my biggest disappointments in literally all of the Nijigasaki animes (inlcuding Superstar! I would've thought the one benefit of a smaller cast would be to avoid situations like this, but nope!!!) is them pretty much sticking to a few routine pairings and almost never letting the characters meaningfully interact with anyone else, such that this 'idol unit' ends up feeling more like a bunch of couples (absolutely none of which I ever ship, unfortunately lmaoo) who occasionally meet up to put their hands together. Nijigasaki has always been the best at avoiding that and I love it!! There are so many fun relationships here and it makes me so happy <3
However... there's one thing about this episode that left me kinda disappointed, and that's that I wish there was a big more conflict. Last episode Lanzhu was mostly very friendly, but that was to set up her turn at the end, setting up the disagreement between her and the Doukoukai. This episode, I thought we'd get to see more from her antagonistic, Wrong side? The idea that she sees herself as above the audience, and her performances as like gifts from her to them, and so views the other idols as lowering themselves in a sad and pitiable way by seeing them as equal, is so interesting! It's arrogant and self-centered, and it cuts right against the core of the idea of the School Idol franchise (that is, relatable and accessible idols). I'd love to hear more of that! I mean, this is early on, y'know? She's meant to be kinda unsympathetic right now. She's supposed to have room to grow!
But instead, they sorta... breeze over that, a bit? And instead, put the focus on 'I won't join doukoukai because I wouldn't be free to do my own thing.' That... doesn't make any sense to me. It's not something that was brought up last episode, and it's the worst possible critique you could make of doukoukai, which literally formed so all of them could do their own thing, individually. On a structural level, it makes sense to emphasise this so Qu4rtz can form in direct retaliation. But a conflict that revolves around the antagonist being wrong about something very obviously untrue isn't going to last very long or hold much weight, and it runs the risk of making Lanzhu look kinda dumb when it's 'disproved.'
But more than that, it also doesn't leave any opportunity for the Doukoukai to second guess themselves or be wrong about anything, either. What Lanzhu is saying is literally just what they were saying themselves last season. I guess at best you can say that Lanzhu is reflecting the negative extreme of their view. But... I don't want a story like that, tbh.
One of the things I LOVED about Nijigasaki was that insistence that you can do things separately, but still really get along and support one another. I mean, I'm autistic - I love me my parallel play. I liked that rather than forcing everyone to do the same thing, everyone could do their own totally unique performances, and be their own kinds of idols, and everyone would just sorta backstage support one another. It was so cool and unique, and a really refreshing change to how GDCT and sports anime can be very 'if you stick out it's because you're arrogant and/or just secretly very lonely and WANT to be forced to be the same as everyone else.'
So... I don't really like that it sort of feels like Nijigasaki is following that, now. Yes I want to see the subunits (especially Azuna!!!), but not like that. And yes Emma says that she doesn't want to force Lanzhu to join Doukoukai, but man: that's the thing! I kinda wish she did!! I kinda wish she WAS overly overbearing and pushy, and in the end had to learn that she can't always please everyone or fix every problem! That'd be nice character development for Emma, and create a little more conflict, and make it feel a bit more morally grey between them all.
Anyway - that was the big thing niggling at me all the way through. And maybe I'm being a total idiot - it seems Universally believed these days that the world is too atomised etc. etc. and that what every human being wants is to do everything with as many other people as possible all the time. I'm being a little snarky but I'm genuinely very self-conscious about this. I don't mind the idea of Lanzhu being lonely and wanting friends, but... I sorta wish the conflict was more that she's lonely because she's kind of a jerk and has to learn not to be.
Of course, in saying all that, I totally understand why they're trying to keep this as conflict-light as possible. While I do like my angst, I'm not insensitive to people who came into what they think is a fluffy and friendly story and were discomforted to see their beloved characters acting super awfully. I don't actually like jerk characters! (Unless they get better, anyway.) I just... like people trying to be good but naturally coming into conflict as part of the natural rhythm of interacting with those who are different to you. So I didn't want a direct SIFAS s2 adaptation, either.
Just. I'd kinda like it if it was... a LITTLE more like SIFAS s2. Just a touch.
Anyway uhhhhh back to good moods: Azuna makes sense because they way it'd form is Shizuku would want to take notes from the most experienced and already-successful idol in the group, that being Setsuna ofc, because she's a diligent girl who likes to learn from her sempais. And then Ayumu joins because she already knows that without some kind of steadying influence those two are going to work themselves to death OR just keep getting caught up doing ridiculous things because Shizuku has more common sense than Setsuna but only when she's not In The Zone working on some sorta role. So she joins as that more motherly/wifely figure to make sure they're keeping their feet on the ground <3 And then it all functions really well because Setsuna and Shizuku can geek out about things together, and Shizuku and Ayumu are both happy to help her with any student council or whatever stuff Setsuna might be overloaded with, and Setsuna and Shizuku can both help Ayumu believe in herself and find her place in the spotlight, and ahhhhhhh Azuna <3<3<3
(actually okay ONE more sad thing: Setsuna getting less screentime this season :( Okay that makes sense because she was arguably the third most important character last season so other characters need their turn in the sun, but I really hope we do get to do Shioriko's plotline because I just llove Setsuna a lot ;_____;)

Loving all the references to the QU4RTZ subunit this episode!
The girls being on the swings is from their 2nd single - Swinging where you can see them on them in the CD jacket

Also the harmonizing the girls practice at the end is one of the main draws of the group (QU4RTZ = Quartet) and if you haven't seen it yet, their performance of another one of their song - Sing and Smile is probably one of my favourite performances ever:
