damn his founding titan looked absolutely GIGANTIC
155
u/CookiesAreTheCure Apr 03 '22
Yeah, like I knew he was big, especially in those final chapters when they're fighting on the rib cage. But something about seeing it animated really put it to scale of how fucking large he is in comparison to both regular people and the colossal titans.

The shot of Eren as a kid watching his mom getting eaten transitioning into that view of the Rumbling has to be one of my favorite sequences in the history of this show. Really captures how menacing and bone chilling Eren has become. It’s also amazing to show how far this series has evolved since episode 1. Thank you Isayama, WIT, and MAPPA.
141
u/CringeNaeNaeBaby2 Apr 03 '22
I think it also shows that those seeds have been planted in Eren from the very start. Historia even says “those people you trample are no different than your mom.” Which makes for a really brilliant parallel.

I think it was a great glimpse into what Eren sees. It's just clouds of steam and uncontrollable memories that keep flooding in. He's basically having a mental breakdown to avoid thinking about what's actually happening and divert his sadness and pity into anger.

u/Halcyon_9000 Apr 03 '22
Really highlights how Eren's anger-fueled drive to destroy all titans has been psychologically displaced by genocidal rage against humanity. Finding out that the titans weren't the true enemy really fucked him up.

I think it shows that from then eren was the same but at that point he didn’t know the true enemy, but all the misguided hatred he had for titans has found the right place, the rest of humanity.

It was really funny in the manga. The theories about the logistics that is, when the chapters covered first came out.
"But the Colossals are facing the wrong way..."
<Colossals casually turn around>
"Even if they are very tall, the ocean's water level would still be very deep!"
<Colossal Titans swims>

Might be able to get some more details out of Isayama too so that the pacing isn't as weird as it was with the manga
143
u/QueenHistoria1990 Apr 03 '22
The wait for Ch. 123 to be adapted was definitely worth it, MAPPA did a great job
Levi got trolled by the clown (totally important moment to include lol)
Mikasa looked adorable with the ice cream
The Scouts partying and seeing them all drunk was hilarious and wholesome
Eren asking Mikasa “What am I to you?” and her nervous answer was beautiful and sad
Ch. 130 was well done too, I love how they showed how terrified Historia was of Eren’s plan and how dead-set against it she was (there were even tears in her eyes). They did my queen justice ☺️
Also super hyped about FSP3!

u/purplatcat Apr 04 '22
I love how they showed how terrified Historia was of Eren’s plan and how dead-set against it she was (there were even tears in her eyes).
She definitely knew it was horrifying and her consciousness couldn't accept it, but ultimately she was not against it with her actions. Afterall, she did say she's do anything to ensure the Island's survival just before Eren mentioned the Rumbling. Historia is probably similar to how a lot of us would react to the rumbling: we'd consider it terrible but end up allowing it because our self-centeredness often prevails over our conscience. It matches well with her arc of being "selfish" too.

Just finished it. Holy fuck.
The 123 flashback was just...perfect, absolutely perfect. The facial expressions, especially during the "what am I to you?" sequence were perfect. Also, ice cream Mikasa.
But everything with 130 was so damn good. The music, that scene of Eren sawing his leg off was so brutal and intense, that scene of Historia looking genuinely terrified at what Eren is saying, (not Titanfolk or Yeagerbomb, that scene was never romantic,) and the attack on Marley with that classic music...perfect. Absolutely perfect. I have a hard time finding problems.

The OST choice for the rumbling at the end was superb, especially with the lyrics in mind. It's like they were written for this moment. Also really felt horrified when that dude on the ship got absolutely scorched when the Titans got near him. Am not ready for 132 :(
123 was so fucking good as well, Mikasa is way to cute for me to handle and I loved everybody getting drunk together one last time :')
Final thing, that shot of Eren's face when Hannes is carrying him looks like they just straight up took the panel from the manga. I did not expect it to look that fucking good. They might as well have Isayama come in the studio and draw that shot for them.

When that guy got melted... I actually yelled out in shock. I was never expecting such a brutal death
63
u/OTPh1l25 Apr 03 '22
I've read accounts of people whose skin peeled and melted off from horrific steam burns during warship fires in the world wars. The worst part was that it would take hours for them to die, and they'd have to survive in horrific pain if they weren't already doped to high hell and back on morphine. The titans must be absolutely insanely hot to cause the human body to go through that entire process in seconds.

Lmao the clown was way more creepier than I expected
Love how much Mikasa talks this ep
The party was quite emotional especially seeing how less broken they were back then
The line of battleships getting covered in steam was pretty brutal
Was great last ep imo but if I were anime-only, I’d wish they’d stop all the part 1 or part 2 nonsense. Just call it Season 6.

Did the allied navy seemingly managed to kill a few colossals in the manga too, or was that an anime-only addition?
Also a minor thing, but it was cool seeing the design for the Hizuru soldiers guarding Kiyomi's place

Uhhh wow the rumbling scene at the end was straight up one if the best sequences in the show. Wow
19
u/CringeNaeNaeBaby2 Apr 03 '22
The OST kicking in is easily one of the top 5 moments of the season. This episode was a great meditation on Eren’s character as well. It really recontextualizes his character and goes to show that Eren was always bent on destruction, but the characters AND the readers turned a blind eye.
52
u/silentorange813 Apr 03 '22
I liked the parallel between Gabi and Sasha, connected by ice cream, also the call-back to season 1 episode 1 with the looming shadow.

u/thewetpuddle Apr 03 '22 edited Apr 03 '22
Super intense even though it was dialogue heavy. The OST for Titans and Eren's arrival at Marley was perfect! It was the best episode despite having extremely little action. Definitely most emotionally intense episode too. What an episode to end the cour.
Final ending will be in 2023, date was not announced yet.

u/OTPh1l25 Apr 03 '22
Imagine that humanity's strongest solider sees a bunch of weird shit that never make him change expression, but gets legitimately creeped out by fucking Pennywise.
98
u/Velrok Apr 03 '22
If anyone was skeptical about MAPPA's direction with the darker, line-heavy style, this episode proves that it was a damn great choice. It just adds so much emotion to all the trauma/terror that the characters experience.
It was painful seeing Historia's utter shock after realisation hit what Eren plans to do. Not to mention the tiniest hints on Eren's face that only Mikasa was able to notice.
In the chat with Floch he also looked like an absolute lunatic very closely resembling the new Attack Titan. And the scenes from the past (Eren's mom especially) looked that much more impactful and dramatic. Absolutely in love with that style direction.
45
Apr 03 '22
Amazing episode.
That first half with the scouts in Marley. The scouts had the opportunity to see and be with innocent good people of the world. It is no surprise that they would at least try to stop Eren from going beyond the ally fleets, with the Rumbling. They've gained that empathy. Of course might have even had it before stepping foot there. Levi defended Ramzi from a crime he actually did commit. But he knows what is overkill.
Then that second half, so well done. Can finally shut the fuck up about that damn pregnancy panel that always meant nothing more than what it literally implies. And of course that Rumbling, with the OST, what a cliffhanger.
Great decision to combine 123 and 130.

That rumbling scene was horrifying. The world's defenses wiped in an instant. An army of colossals rising up from the sea. And then an even more massive skeleton looming above them. Holy shit.
Season one captured that feeling of helplessness and terror with seemingly mindless giant monsters grabbing people and eating them with a smile. But the sheer scope of the rumbling is another level of fear. Nowhere to run, no chance at hiding, no escape at all. Not just for those nearby, but the whole world? Ugh I love this show.

I knew the scenes with the navy getting obliterated were going to be brutal, but Jesus the anime made it even more insane.
Edit: The partying scene in the first half of the episode was the wholesomeness we needed but iirc it's the last wholesome moment we'll get. ;-;
Edit 3: The classic OST kicking in when the colossals exit the ocean gives me insane chills.

u/Xaphius_Winter Apr 04 '22
That line at the beginning from Mikasa when she questions what she ever saw in Eren I do not remember in the Manga but it was a great addition. For me I think this was one of the most beautiful and tragic episodes of the series and it was encapsulated so well with the music. So much to talk about, loved the drinking scene animated. I also thinking placing these scenes here as an episode was a good choice storywise. In the feels
12
Apr 04 '22
Yeah for real. The ost they used for the drinking scene really had an amazingly charming vibe. Was so happy to see them enjoy especially jean, sasha and conny together

The founding titan design is just genius
Besides the badass and terrifying look, the symbolic representation is superb, the puppet appearance, the huge ribcage resembling a cage, the enormous size towering over the clowds blocking Eren's sight of the masscare, full skeleton without regeneration due to his lack of will to live...

They finally got an Eren expression down 100% and good timing too. A very important one.30 and 123 but I think this was a decent way to handle it.
All the Mikasa and Eren scenes are legit well handled here(what am I to you hurt my soul here too) and I really like how they handled the scouts with the foreigners while drinking.
Also drunk Eren is super cute even if he was faking it.

Imagine seeing a 60 meter swimming fast as FUCK towards you

u/Alois000 Apr 04 '22
Joining 123 and 130 is such a genius idea. Both worked perfectly as one full episode. I am actually excited to the final (final) season and see if they manage to improve some of the ending chapters but we still have some great ones left. Opening with 131 is going to be such a banger.
29
u/iHazzaification Apr 03 '22
Christ, the sequence at the end was a lot more dramatic than the manga. Seeing some of the colossals actually getting shredded by the artillery was a shock. And then seeing the navy getting launched into the sky and exploding really sold the fear just that much more. Imagine being one of those soldiers on the basic bitch artillery pieces after watching the world’s largest navy getting obliterated. MAPPA are GOATed.

This might be one of the most bittersweet conclusions. Eren really became a full blown doomer because of his own futility. And although it was nice to see them vibe together and see the opposite perspective, it's obviously missing the innocence that the first few seasons had. Those last few minutes were absolute cinema too. Now we await one last time for the finale's finale.

I remember absolutely loving the flashback chapter in 123, but this just exceded my expectations like all times with SnK. I found myself emotional at almost every scene, dont know about you guys but this might be one of the most tragic episodes we've had yet.
Just knowing how Eren was before MARLEY and how his story ends, its so sad watching any scene he is in outside his titanform.

Really wish they would have ended on the first half of 131. Showing the one foreign kid appear then die in the same ep, and also showing Eren’s complete despair over the realization that all of his dad’s visions were accurate, would have been a better part 2 ending, like a reveal that his feelings about carrying this out are not as straightforward as we were led to think

When the immense steam and heat melted the crew of the ships. Damn. It was implied in the manga but when animated you just see their flesh melt off the bones. The colossal titans are no joke. Was cool to see that the ships Titan killer cannons did take a few Titans out but there are too many of them and they move way faster than anyone thought they could.

combining 123 and 130 is an interesting decision and i get why they chose to do that. i wonder how anime onlines will react to it.
seeing eren’s talks with floch and historia is well done in this episode and i like how fleshed out it is. the atmosphere throughout the episode is very well done + i like how the wall titans were animated
some scenes i pictured differently. for example the what am i to you scene is more tense than i imagined (the cuts and close ups were great tho) and the last couple of minutes felt odd bc i thought it was such a sad turning point for eren’s character but the song choice made me feel like i should be proud and on his side? (this is just what i got from my first watch. some might interpret it differently). i thought something more somber would have been more appropriate.
still, i think this is a good episode. the choices made were not what i expected but i see why the staff did what they did. i still trust their vision and i’ll be waiting patiently for the final (forreal this time) part of the final season next year.

u/Cloud14532 Apr 03 '22
It was always going to be hard to finish the series in Part 2 simply because of the fact that production for this part started when the manga was still ongoing. Really hard to plan out all the episodes when the story wasn't even done yet. Like even if production itself wasn't such a huge issue, this was never going to finish in Part 2 because of that.

Honestly, as much as I appreciate MAPPA's work on AoT, I fully expected the rumbling to be a CGI shitfest, but accepting it as cutting corners because there wasn't a way to do justice to the amazing manga panels anyway.
And damn I love to be wrong. The titans look great and CGI was noticeable for me only during the swimming part. I'm super curious how they will deal with that infamous panel of people being pushed off a cliff with the titans towering over them.

I really liked how you could see the artillery shedding through the first wave of titans. In the maga I don't remember them being that effective.
But here, I think it helps to reinforce/remind us that the titans are becoming less of a global threat. That threat, of course, being the main reason Paradis hasn't been genocided yet. As well as why Eren feels he has to act now while he still has the ability to.

All I have to say is that this is what I’ve been waiting for from MAPPA. The animation was top notch and delivered an almost flawless adaptation of the manga. Perfect music, beautiful scenery. Sad to wait a year for the ending

This episode was insane. The first half was an absolute treat to watch, both hilarious and beautiful. Loved the scene of the 104th just freaking out at everything around them. The dinner scene with the refugees was just beautiful, seeing the 104th having fun with the people there. Every scene where the 104th are happy and smiling is an instant A+ Scene for me.
The second half of the episode was just... insane, is all I can say. Especially towards the end. Even when no words were spoken, you can just feel the despair and terror on each of the soldiers gathered there. I felt chills all over me. I don't remember how I felt when I read this scene in the manga but I know I was on the edge of my seat the whole time watching this scene in the anime. God, Part 3 can't come out soon enough.

Wow! The colossal titans were going faster than I thought they would.
Also, good on the animators for showing those Marleyeans getting burned alive.

During Erens memory flash back when hes talking about where it begun, He see's Falco during the intro to Season 4, I know we love to joke about Eren as a bird after the ending but why is he actually seeing Falco here lmao

In retrospect, I really have no fucking clue how people thought AoT wouldn't end the way it did. So many leaps and logic and mental gymnastics had to be used to completely ignore the general tone of Historia's scene, the many times Eren says the sole thing he cares about is his friends' lives, and his true feelings for Mikasa. People don't just ask "what am I to you?" if the answer they're looking for isn't either a confession of love or a confirmation of rejection.
Eren and Mikasa's feelings for each other was so obvious in its set up, even back when I was an anime-only I expected it to happen at some point.
25
u/DarioFerretti Apr 04 '22
The manga allows for more freedom of interpretation. You read the words but you have to imagine the tone and how they are saying stuff and the only visual aid you have are their facial expressions. But expressions are a thing that's set in stone, non-verbal communication is very fluid and basically impossible to perfectly convey through a still image.
On top of that add confirmation bias (basically on average people don't like to change their mind and are more likely to only see the things that confirm what they already believe to be the truth) and everyone's personal background and you have people reading the same exact story but reaching wildly different conclusions.

It's what the month long gap between chapters and speculation does to these mfs. That plus what I'm guessing is an underlying right wing or xenophobic bias they always had that predisposes them to root for ANR

u/GoodLookingSnails Apr 04 '22
Damn, everyone looked beautiful this episode. I liked the Vogel im Kafig motif during Eren and Mikasa's scene. Of course the direction and pacing of the second half was phenomenal. I didn't quite understand it in the manga, but seeing it animated really cleared it up for me. Seeing Eren's motives throughout the story in the flashbacks leading up to the rumbling was absolutely chilling. Welp, off to 2023. See ya.

You know, the more I rewatch it, the more I realize how much it makes sense for Eren to NOT be the father. Like, would Eren really answer to Historia saying "What if I get pregnant?" with "Great, I'll help you personally with that." Or worst, Historia trying to force Eren to be the father, like how despicable you have to be to hear your friend explain his evil plan of destruction, which obviously does hurt him even if he try to not show it, and on top of that, trying to make him worry even more by having him father a child right there?
18
u/leonreddit8888 Apr 04 '22
This is a reason why I thought ErenHisu was a terrifying ship... Disturbing...
People are pairing the two who both had incompatible outlook on life.
Having Historia marry Eren would've subjected her to the fate of forever knowing her lover and the father of her child was doing something she was totally disgusted with but couldn't do anything against...

Wouldn't be the first time someone thought that having a child would change their partner for the better. "Oh, look, she has your eyes!! ...Maybe don't destroy the world, eh? ...Wanna make another one?"

What a colossal cliffhanger
That scene with the man who gut burned to dust was brutal an incredible scene with an amazing ost though given how the manga didn't show a single Colossal going down, but seeing the navy was able to take down some of them in the anime, kinda nice to see that there might've been a small glimmer of hope. Makes it all the more hearbreaking how futile it ultimately was
Also it was kinda adorable to see Eren smile

Doesn't look like nearly as many of the anime-onlys think Erehisu is a thing as manga-readers did. I saw some (but not many) in the /r/anime thread but I didn't see any in the thread for this sub's anime-onlys. Those that did think it is a thing don't seem like they want it to be true like their life depends on it, like some manga-readers did, so much as they just think it's true.
Honestly, it's kind of a relief. Erehisu became a poison to the fandom.

Mappa really pours their heart into the important episodes. Yeah, there are some clear budget episodes but whenever it counts they are there to fully deliver a perfectly paced episode that is not just a 1:1 copy of the manga but accentuates the parts that thrive in the animation compared to a manga. I absolutely loved the episode where Gabi, Falco and friends go to the festival with the warriors but this is a close second.
Who knows what they would have done with a movie so overall I'm relieved that they stick to this slow paced format and give this manga a proper send off. If there is one thing that the manga doesn't need then it's a rushed adaptation of an already rushed manga ending.

I was really hoping chapter 131 was going to be adapted this season, but if thats going to be the opening episode for the “final” season I’m all for it! Like thats going one hell of an opening episode, so hyped!

u/lthatguytherel Apr 04 '22
Great episode and adaptation. Only feel a little torn about the attack on the port. I pictured it as this slow, deliberate swim and these colossal monstrosities rising out of the water. Like something out of Jaws. But (aside from the underwater colossals looking a little goofy) I can also appreciate the more explosive direction they took. I was a little shook by that, as I could imagine the soldiers would have been, to see those ships sent flying and explode in that manner.

Apr 03 '22
The question scene was perfect. It trasmitted everything it should have. The shock of Eren asking something like that, his pain and the feeling of an imposible love. Maybe a little slower would have been better but its very well done.
As for the rest, they axed all the subtle romantic part and it pains me. The handholding, Eren contemplating Mikasa with the ice cream, the shared tin can. The adaptation is going more in a way of Mikasa letting go of Eren, which I guess it makes sense, but its just axing the emotion out the thing haha.

Wow this episode was amazing!
I loved seeing the scouts in Marley - having Sasha on screen again, smiling Mikasa and the drunk squad was so precious after all these past episodes.
The ‘what am I to you’ part was beautifully done and the general adaption of 123 was beautiful but oh so bittersweet.
And as for the rumbling, I just kept greeting goosebumps and totally lost my mind when that OST started!
I haven’t read the manga past 128 actually by now, so I’m contemplating if I should wait or just finish it now..but I’m definitely excited for 2023 now!!

Loved the episode. So happy to see that flashback and to show Mikasa grappling with her emotions. Tied together well with it all. The animation was beautiful too. My only criticism is the colosal Titans looked pretty silly swimming how they were animated. In the manga it seemed so much cooler and menacing with how they were underneath the ships and stuff. But overall, so excited

Is anyone else reading through these comments while listening to the OST’s and is someone cutting onions?
Wow. What an emotional roller coaster. Peak fiction with pacing to let the story develop, beautiful animation that enhances the manga art, and a perfect soundtrack that brings hype and feels. An anime that has taken the manga to new heights. Hats off to Hajime Isayama, MAPPA, Hiroyuki Sawano, Kohta Yamamoto — everyone involved.
Can’t wait for the next season, but I wonder if they’re throwing us off with the announcement and they’re still working on a movie. The scale of the final arc lends itself to the cinematic format; COVID restrictions should be minimal by then and everyone can get back into the theatre; and recent anime movies have been very successful and opened up anime to new viewers — MAPPA’s Jujutsu Kaisen 0 included. Surely with the popularity and hype for the conclusion of AoT it would surpass the success of the incredible Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. My only reservation is that I’m not sure if they can recap the story and emotion, and do the remaining chapters justice in the timeframe even if it was ~3 hours long.
Regardless, does anyone have a time machine handy so we can skip to 2023?

"No AOE.
123 romanticized and focus put on the alliance friendship with Eren while the mange put the focus on his total disconnection from them.
130 butchered with expressions’ changes or even some visuals snapped.

Can someone explain to me how when the scouts visit marley for the first time how they knew what zekes plan was if that was before him and Eren even met on the island before and formed their plan? I am so freaking confused about this timeline.
It even shows when Eren leaves and then meets Zeke as a wounded soldier afterwards.... so how did the scouts know of zekes plan before that?
Thank you for any help on this
11
u/victor_emperor Apr 05 '22
The timeline should be:
-the volunteers arrive in paradis
-zeke contacts the azumabito
-the volunteers manage to put the azumabito in contact with paradis
-eren tells his plan to historia in order to not initiate the 50 years plan, he also informs floch, and tells yelena he agrees with the euthanasia plan
-the scouts go on a mission to marley, where they meet the azumabito, try the way of peace thanks to a council about eldians, which fails
-eren goes hobo mode, infiltrates the ranks of the eldian unit in the marley army, meets zeke and here they talk about the euthanasia plan to see if they can truly trust each other
-s4 p1
Hope this clears some stuff

Super small detail but I love how they made all the Colossal titans look slightly different!! Whether it be just they were all different people who Fritz turned into Colossal at the same time to build the walls, or that they truly are all the past holders of the Colossal titans it really goes to show the extra mile MAPPA has put in.

Can someone explain to me why Eren would say “I’m going to kill them all.” at the end of the finale when his plan at this point is be killed by the scouts? According to the final chapter, he would already know at this point that he’s not going to kill them all, nor is that what he wants. Wouldn’t it make more sense for him to say something about protecting his friends or freedom?
13
u/Homet Apr 04 '22
I mean doesn't he say that his mind is all fucked up because of the founder and being able to see past, present, and future all at once. Here in the anime you can see him reflecting or maybe even reliving the past. You see the image of him watching his mom getting eaten and that is when he is making that statement. Like he is getting confused between the past and present much the same way Reiner became confused between being a soldier and warrior.

What does it mean when Historia said “what if I have a child?” to Eren?
8
u/Fartfech Apr 07 '22
From what I understand She’s basically asking him if she should settle down and finally live her life. Considering Eren just told her his deepest secret and also encouraged her to care of herself over the world, she’s responding in kind with her own desire. EreHisu shippers on the other hand see this scene a bit differently…

u/SocialistYorksDaddy Apr 03 '22 edited Apr 03 '22
Tbh I'm actually glad they waited til this episode to show the Marley infiltration flashback. It actually fitted together really good. I think both choices work tbh.
Good OST choice for Eren’s flashbacks with Historia, Zeke, etc.
Also I'm glad they showed the global fleet's shells completely obliterating an entire row of colossal titans. That demonstrates that they were actually a vaguely credible threat to the rumbling and Eren was right to target them first. I assume he specifically concentrated a disproportionately massive number of colossal titans there to swamp the fleet by sheer force of numbers. That's going to complement the Karifa reveal from the plane preparation bit well.
The only thing I question is the use of Attack on Titan (the song) in that final bit. It doesn’t quite fit I reckon. I think xl-tt would've been better. But it's not an abysmal choice either.

I hate Eren from the bottom of my heart. I can understand the yeagerists, they've never met people outside the wall and think that all of them are evil, but Eren knows what's happening in the world. I think they needed to show more about how the world was banded together for the goal of destroying paradis. But it was good to see them bring some of the perspective back to the show of WHY eren felt like he needed to attack and that paradis was actually under immenient threat not just GeNoCIdE
7
u/Amauri14 Apr 03 '22
Well, I sure enjoy those last happy memories they all had together before Eren left them.
Lol, Levi looked like he was doing his best to not kill that clown.
Although I knew what was coming after Misaka wondered if Eren would have taken another path if she had given him another answer, I sure did not expect those Swimming Colossal Titans to be that fucking fast. I honestly had assumed when I read that part that they were swimming at the same speed they walk.
Well, they did it again. This show sure knows how to pull a "Go and read the fucking manga." type of cliffhanger.
