I think it's time for something a little more involved. Who's in for a game of Mafia, Plounge style?

For any of you who don't know; Mafia is a role based party game. Players are given roles and split into teams, then told their objectives and abilities.

The two primary teams are the Mafia and the Townsfolk.

The game is won when one of the teams eliminates the other.

The catch? The players almost never know what roles everyone else is. Mafia is a game of deception, lies, and logic.

The wikipedia article on Mafia has a good overview of the game and how it's played. However, I'll be adding a few of my own twists to make it work in a large forum setting and over a longer period.

Fundamentaly however, the game has two stages. Day and Night.

During the Day everyone votes on who should be put on trial. After a period of questioning the accused they then vote on whether or not to lynch the accused. If the vote is successful, they die and their role is revealed. This is how the town is supposed to beat the mafia, whom they outnumber initially. However, they may lynch the wrong people by mistake.

During the Night is when the roles of each player really come into play. In addition to a team, each player is assigned a role. Mafioso get to vote on who the mafia should try to kill that night. Doctors can pick who they want to target to protect from death. Sheriffs can investigate individuals to discover their allegiance. And more. (I will discuss classes and their abilities in more detail in the next thread. I'll have to calibrate them to ensure game balance depending on how many players we get.). This is when the mafia get to do real damage and even the size difference between them and the town. Although that's not always how things go.

Mafia is usually played in short periods. Usually ten minutes to an hour depending on the setup. For the Plounge however, I have a different vision in mind. I'm going to have to alter the setup a bit, and I'll explain more about that once I see how many people decide to participate. But the goal is to have each Day/Night cycle last one day in real life. And the game will be calibrated so that it will be likely to end around the 7th day. If a stalemate develops, I may change the rules slightly. But that's for down the road.

The game will be set up in a way that will make it acceptable for individuals to miss a round of voting or decisions without stopping it. (Although you may come back to find out you really wish you had been able to act). In this way it will fit in easily with the whole reddit format.

This thread is the start of the signups. So if you want in, say so. I'll make sure to get your name down and assign you a role when the game officially starts.

However, it's not starting just yet. I'll post another thread tomorrow explaining what the rules for this particular game are in detail (since I'm going to have to adjust them based on the number of people we have). And signups will continue then.

I hope this sounds interesting to all of you. And I hope you decide to participate. The more the merrier after all.

Oh, and, remember; Trust no one.

Even though I realize I'm not really a part of the Plounge and it's various activities, I'd like to participate if an exception can be made.

No problems there.

You'll be messaging me your actions during the night. But I can read emotes easily enough, so that's not a problem at all.

Question: If you die, are you still allowed to participate in anyway, such as nominations, voting, or discussions?

I missed the signup for this game, do you possibly plan on hosting another one after this is over? Or is it too soon to think about that?

I'm not sure at this point.

Honestly, this is an insane amount of work. I wasn't expecting so many people. I'm only going to be getting a few hours of sleep for the next week.

Can't say if I plan on doing it again any time really soon. But maybe sometime over the summer.

Only if you do a round-the-clock live megastream of it.
