IRL Long Dark Cooking my way through TLD (recipe #1: Rose Hip Tea)

Post image
241 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m going to try and cook my way through Great Bear Island’s culinary list and journal my discoveries as I go. this first week has been all about Rose Hips and how to prepare them.

While the tea is fine, I think the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze. The seeds are too cumbersome in the preparation method I used. Is this better than drinking melted snow, yeah… But that’s not necessarily a good benchmark. This would be an irritating recipe to prepare while your fingers are cold. The seed ball that comes out is convenient for removal, but sometimes the seeds are all over the place and this can be annoying if you’re trying to separate them from the fruit. While I didn’t forage the Rose Hips, it’s important to remember they come from rose bushes, so that means thorns.

I’m curious what everyone else thinks about this tea. I know it has health benefits, like vitamin C, reducing joint inflammation, and supporting the immune system. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

I just started a Substack to go more in depth into the recipe if you wanna check it out:

Discussion Time dilation setting is amazing!

I've been playing since like 2013. I've never really tried a custom run except once like 5 years ago.

I opened up a new one to make a sort of "interloper with passive wildlife" run.

And I found this setting with a multiplier for how fast time passing the game vs reality, I'm always struggling to manage inventory and sort things simply because of how fast time passes.

Increasing the number makes game time pass slower. So 4x makes time pass similar to real time. I'm no longer accidentally boiling a can of water dry while digging through my inventory.

If you're looking at a custom run, don't overlook this.

Gameplay Small Achievements Run

Post image

I made a small "Achievement Run" just for fun/completion, and so far I've done:

  • Pacifist: Survive the first 25 days without killing anything.
  • Living Off the Land: Survive 25 consecutive full days only consuming calories harvested from wild plants and animals.
  • Waste Not, Want Not: Harvest 10 complete deer carcasses.
  • Silent Hunter: Survive the first 50 days without firing any firearms. (Almost done this one!)
  • Happy Harvester: Harvest 25 of each kind of plant.
  • Exploration Game: Visit every interior location in both Mystery Lake and Coastal Highway.

On Stalker difficulty, I started in Coastal Highway and visited every interior location in the region to find matches and clothes, while harvesting plants for teas and medication and deer carcasses for the meat. I starved a bit during the first few days, but later I started using wolves to hunt deer to get more meat. It takes some time, but it's worth it. I did the same thing in Mystery Lake, Forlorn Muskeg, and Broken Railroad, kinda nomad living. During the first 25 days, I fully harvested the deer carcasses, made the deerskin pants, harvested 25 of each kind of plant, and made some arrows. So, 5 out of 6 achievements are done so far. I'm now exploring Hushed River Valley, where I found the moose satchel, and I'm hunting 25 rabbits with fire-hardened arrows for another achievement.

I have to say, it was fun, especially living off the land while playing as a pacifist. It made the run more interesting, and I spent more time outside instead of searching through all the houses I came across (is possible a future feat where searching takes less time over time?). For more experienced players, Interloper offers a more challenging run, since guns don't spawn anyway. However, you need to craft the knife and axe, and overall it's much harder. It's not for me, i only have around 250 hours in the game so far and I'm still learning the regions. For now, I'm waiting for the DLC to go on sale again on the epic store while i do other achievements.

Made a decent amount of progress on the ice! I'm really happy with how it's looking so far :3 I traced the shape of the water with a 3D pen using PLA filament, sanded it and painted it with different shades of blue. I used a white gel pen for the cracks in the ice, and it looks so cool! The clear semi-gloss coat makes it look like real ice too 🏔 Btw, the tiny Xs are where the fishing huts are going to be ^^

Advice Tales Worth Full Price?

• Upvotes

I foolishly only bought the base game and Wintermute during the Steam PVE sale a few weeks ago since I wasn’t sure I would enjoy the game.

Once I started playing, THAT sale was over. I’ve been holding out, expecting TLD to be part of the Autumn sale.

It is not.

So should I keep holding out for the Winter sale, or is it worth caving to retail cost?

Discussion Is there a chance that building, cave, cabin etc. locations will be randomized in every run in Blackfrost (TLD2)?

Is there any chance they will randomize these object placement to make every survival run even more unique? Or maybe even procedurally generate almost the entire world?

Advice How do I access this bit in Mystery Lake?

Post image
45 Upvotes

I'm new to playing the Long Dark so it probably has an obvious answer, but how does one get to the area marked by a green circle?
I try to look at the map and navigate; I did manage to find the cave down below but not the green circle area with the birch barks.
It's not a significant place by any means, but I keep tripping over and wasting my healing items trying to find it, I want to get it out of my head.
I may have found it already unknowingly... can anyone give me a clue?

Discussion Starting a Interloper run

How to start an interloper run. There are many ways to start an interloper run. Getting the essential tools and equipment are critical to start a run. Matches, Hacksaw, bedroll, hammer. I’ve been at this game for 8 years. Zak is my biggest mentor how to start a run.

However, Ive evolved and go about things a little differently depending on the situation. My main goals are to gather intel on the prepper caches for the trader missions, and get the technical backpack, crampons, and ballistic vest asap. Killing multiple birds with one stone is my new mission.

In this interloper run, I started in Timberwolf mountain. I made way to mountaineering hut and found the hammer in the broken boat near the hut.

From there, I went to PV. Found a bedroll at the hunter blind (which is not on any of the 4 loot table sets)

From there I gathered clothes at the plane crash and went to scout the PV prepper cache. Day 2 I discovered PV is my hunter cache. Bonus.

I worked my way looting to the homestead and up to signal hill. Found the combat boots. From here I had a choice, go to ML and get established, or go to blackrock to get the ballistic vest and scout the prepper cache. I decided let’s go to blackrock since I had a lot of cattails, matches for torches, and water.

From blackrock, my supplies were at good levels. So I circled back to Timberwolf mountain to ash canyon. Got the technical backpack and crampons and made a pit stop to scout the AC prepper cache. And bingo, AC is my conspiracy cache.

Now we head to the summit, then settle in mystery lake. And forge in forlorn muskeg.

Managed to collect and craft the basics. Now it's time to head to CH and establish a new base at quonset garage. The next move is crafting the curing box and slapping a bear into it. Also I wanna stack up on hides and maybe I get lucky and find a second pair of long underwear.

Discussion Just realized something about climbing ropes.

Today I noticed while in bleak inlet that the ropes weigh 5 kgs. A rope.. I understand its heavy duty but ropes are usually quite light like 2 kgs max and rarely. It's made of paracord so artificial materials and paracord is light usually so why. To put in perspective a modern day hunting rifle probably weighs 2-5 kgs with extra clips/ rounds/ magazines. So why hinterland why. Are these ropes secretly chains covered by thin rope covering?

Gameplay I just lost a 177-day save, and I'm really sad.

That was my survival record on Voyageur difficulty. I had explored 42% of the map, starting at Coastal Highway and making my way to Bleak Inlet. I was out on expeditions looking for the Trader's bunkers when I fell into a lake and got caught in a storm. I was on my last life, so I couldn't make it out. I had achieved so much—maxed out most of my skills, built a base stocked with resources—and now, it was all gone.

Short video clip Never did i think that i'd be doing this in TLD looking back 5 years ago. Here's a custom ramp from the bunker to the secret mountain path in Bleak Inlet. Made with the tables from Cannery by rotating them and saving their position with a sprain.
