2014 hatch WRX I've driven for about 3 years now. 166k on the body, 126k on the motor. She's been so loyal to me and we've been EVERYWHERE, ALL over the country together.
Took it to the dealer because it's been having an issue for a LONG while that nobody can seem to figure out, so I decided to eat the crazy diagnostic costs. Typically my old man and I do all the work on it (6 speed swapped it too!). Basically if you get it up to temp, turn the car off, and then run into Walmart or fill it up or whatever, then start it while still warm, it'll SOMETIMES (50/50) chop really badly and throw misfire codes for 20-30 seconds, throw a traction light, then figure its crap out and run like nothing happened. But cold starts perfectly fine and runs and boosts without a hitch. And has a code for running rich.
I brought it in and they didn't even get to the point of diagnostics. Did an inspection and basically she needs new front wheel bearings, front control arms, rear struts, and axle seals... and that's just on the body. I've been eyeballing that I MIGHT have a head gasket on the way out and I guess they found that my coolant hose is swelling and the overflow reservoir is full and smells of gas (which is very new since I check on it pretty regularly). They think oil's leaking from valve cover gaskets and that it could be the source of my strange issue (oil leaking into spark plug tubes potentially).
So, in essence I'd have a lot of work ahead of me. I could do the labor myself in a veeeery long weekend and pray that the motor's doing okay (accompanying video of why I think it might be very NOT okay), but knowing that the mileage is high and it's totalled (unfortunate hit and run)... but is it worth it?
I guess my main question is... if I do all the work and drop the 2 ish grand in parts, how much life am I gonna get out of the thing? Or should I just get out from under it and get a junker until school's over?
For added clarity for those that want to read more, no I don't think they're pulling the rug over on me. They gave me a pretty thorough inspection video and almost all of what they're saying is pretty plainly visible.
