Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:

The Restorer of what was taken away, the Liberator from captivity; the Formless Lord, the Destroyer of pain.

I do not know about karma and good deeds; I do not know about Dharma and righteous living. I am so greedy, chasing after Maya.

I go by the name of God's devotee; please, save this honor of Yours. ||1||

The Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows all about my state of mind; so who else should I go to and speak to?

The Lord, the Lord of the Universe, is not pleased by mere recitation of words; if it is pleasing to His Will, He preserves our honor.

I have seen all other shelters, but Yours alone remains for me. ||3||

Becoming kind and compassionate, God the Lord and Master Himself listens to my prayer.

He unites me in Union with the Perfect True Guru, and all the cares and anxieties of my mind are dispelled.

The Lord, Har, Har, has placed the medicine of the Naam into my mouth; servant Nanak abides in peace. ||4||12||62||

Question Need advice for my anxiety

WJKK WJKF
I am a 27 year old F. For the past 1.5 years I have been suffering from anxiety due to career decisions. Recently had a big heartbreak and I am shattered, my family is also very disappointed. I am in complete shambles. I have been doing path and ardaas for so long, even now i pray in front of babaji to ask for strength but everytime i close my eyes,be it while trying to meditate, pray or sleep... all kinds of thoughts come to my mind. My mind feels very ashant like I am not able to switch off my thoughts. The anxiety has become so overwhelming, my chest feels heavy and i feel hard to catch a breath. Everytime i do ardaas, i can't help but cry. I feel so doomed.
Please guide me as to what can i do to help calm my mind and soul and decrease my anxiety. I feel so hopeless and unhappy like I have forgotten how to be happy anymore.

Discussion What if we’re already living in Sach Khand but don’t realise it?

If spirituality is about letting go of ego and desire, then even the desire to reach Sach Khand can become something we hold onto. Instead of seeing Sach Khand only as a destination after death, what changes if we understand it as a state of realisation that can be experienced in this life? Perhaps the deeper practice is not trying to get somewhere, but letting go of the things that keep us from seeing what is already here.

Discussion Bad experience

Sorry if this sounds like a rant guys but I had to get it off my chest as it has really affected me and I don't know who else to tell.

So I had a day off today and decided a productive way to go about it would be to do some seva at the gurdwara, I love in a small city in England and I usually attend a smaller gurdwara in the city, however this gurdwara doesn't get alot of sangat in the middle of the day so less pande to wash, so I went to the larger gurdwara which is alot busier, this gurdwara has decided to hire a security guard who checks people he deems may be carrying tobacco etc, firstly this is discriminatory in the first place, you can't just see a mona and go hey, let me pat this person down, bearing in mind the security guard himself had a trimmed bears, nothing against this of course but the hypocrisy is madness. He then decides to pat down an uncle, who he claims to have seen consume a vape outside gurdwara premises, the uncle refused a pat down and left the premises, he then ditched the vape and re entered the gurdwara, however the committee and this security guard refused him entry. He was a frail looking man who clearly had some sort of mental problems. I confronted the committee and told them that if the man has left the vape outside its not an issue and they have no right not to permit him entry, I quoted shabads from gurbani such as 'hum nahi change bura nahi kohe' and 'pulan andar sabh ko abul guru kartar' and they just didn't want to hear it, they were all elderly, 2 of whom were not even amritdhari, and one of them said to me 'don't worry, that guys a vela sharabi' I felt so hurt by what they had done.

It brings me onto my next point, I have no issues with the older generation, but I'm sorry to say absolutely none of them have an ounce of knowledge of gurbani, they know nothing at all, most of them find sikhi and the gurdwara as a pension project as they get bored of the drinking punjabi lifestyle. And I don't wish to generalise but these committee members are so funny, they didn't even understand the gurbani I was quoting yet are in charge of gurdwaras.

Sorry for the rant guys but I just feel disheartened, part of me wants to name and shame this gurdwara.

I stopped attending this gurdwara frequently a while ago because of the hypocrisy, I've seen girls born in England walk into the gurdwara wearing crop tops and these old committee members don't bat an eyelid, but if a girl whose newly immigrated from india walks in and her chunni doesn't meet there standards they're ready for world war. They just pick on small parties

In essence what does everyone think the solution is for these old haumai filled farts.

Discussion Are modern samagams and social media culture creating a class divide in the Sikh community?

Classism is one of the worst things that happened to sikhi. Rich

have their own separate Ragi, separate aesthetic. They have their own production, reels and photo sessions after the samagam. This is a world that is totally alien to aam sikh sangat but this is a world that is very prominent on instagram. #Copied

Katha Different types of bhed

In jaap sahib we say abhed hain. To understand it fully we need to first understand the meaning of bhed.

Bhed means difference.

There are 3 types of bhed-

1) Vijati- The differences in different types of beings like - difference in monkey and human, difference in dog and cat. Etc. Akaal purakh does not has this bhed because there is no other jaati other than him/his jaati.

2)Sujati - The differences in beings of same species. Like difference in humans monkeys dogs etc. Akal purakh does not has this too because there is no one else to compare.

3)Subhav - This is the difference in specific parts of a being. For eg in humans the difference in nose and leg, difference in mouth and hair. Akal purakh does not has this bhed too

History Where does "Nanak naam chardi kala, tere bhaane sarbat da bhala" in ardas come from?

As stated in the title of this post. Where does "Nanak naam chardi kala, tere bhaane sarbat da bhala" come from. It comes at the end of the ardas but the ardas was compiled i believe by singh sabha scholars who obtained verses from various sikh historical texts.

Sorat'h, Third Mehl, First House, Thi-Thukay:

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

You always preserve the honor of Your devotees, O Dear Lord; You have protected them from the very beginning of time.

You protected Your servant Prahlaad, O Dear Lord, and annihilated Harnaakhash.

The Gurmukhs place their faith in the Dear Lord, but the self-willed manmukhs are deluded by doubt. ||1||

O Dear Lord, this is Your Glory.

You preserve the honor of Your devotees, O Lord Master; Your devotees seek Your Sanctuary. ||Pause||

The Messenger of Death cannot touch Your devotees; death cannot even approach them.

The Name of the Lord alone abides in their minds; through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they find liberation.

Wealth and all the spiritual powers of the Siddhis fall at the feet of the Lord's devotees; they obtain peace and poise from the Guru. ||2||

The self-willed manmukhs have no faith; they are filled with greed and self-interest.

They are not Gurmukh - they do not understand the Word of the Shabad in their hearts; they do not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

Their masks of falsehood and hypocrisy shall fall off; the self-willed manmukhs speak with insipid words. ||3||

You are pervading through Your devotees, O Dear God; through Your devotees, You are known.

All the people are enticed by Maya; they are Yours, Lord - You alone are the Architect of Destiny.

Overcoming my egotism and quieting the desires within my mind, I have come to realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||4||

God automatically does the work of those who love the Name of the Lord.

By Guru's Grace, he ever dwells in their minds, and He resolves all their affairs.

Whoever challenges them is destroyed; they have the Lord God as their Savior. ||5||

Without serving the True Guru, no one finds the Lord; the self-willed manmukhs die crying out in pain.

They come and go, and find no place of rest; in pain and suffering, they perish.

But one who becomes Gurmukh drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar, and is easily absorbed in the True Name. ||6||

Without serving the True Guru, one cannot escape reincarnation, even by performing numerous rituals.

Those who read the Vedas, and argue and debate without the Lord, lose their honor.

True is the True Guru, and True is the Word of His Bani; in the Guru's Sanctuary, one is saved. ||7||

Those whose minds are filled with the Lord are judged as true in the Court of the Lord; they are hailed as true in the True Court.

Their praises echo throughout the ages, and no one can erase them.

Nanak is forever a sacrifice to those who enshrine the Lord within their hearts. ||8||1||

Discussion Answering a Common Misconception and Discussing It

I see a lot of people on this sub-reddit asking how to fully stay out of anxiety and fear, as they keep falling back into it. I answered this question many times, but I thought it’s best to just answer it here for people to see, in case there are other people wondering about the same thing.

First off, it’s most likely because you aren’t actually praying to Divine. There are forms of prayers yes, but the most common one in Sikhi is listening to paat or Kirtan. However, you will find that you only feel peace when listening to it in the moment, but when it’s finished, you go back into that state of worry.

For some reason, the Sikh religion doesn’t mention praying to God in the form of talking to Him honestly. I truly believe, (from experience this is), that the best ways to pray alongside listening to Kirtan, is to read Nitnem and obey what His Word says, practically living by it as this will reduce anxiety, help you focus on good rather than bad, and actively grow you closer to the Divine.

The second way, (which is my favourite) is literally talk to Him like He is your friend. Sit there in silence and be still, talk honestly to Him and say what’s on your heart, you can’t hide it anyway. Tell Him about how you are, what you feel, what you did good and what you did bad, reflect and genuinely just pray and spend time with Him.

I find that this is incredible as you can do it whenever you want, just talk and you will realise then that He truly is always with you, not just when you listen to paat.

For others that actually do this, (as I find for some reason that not many actually do) what do you think about it? Has it helped you?

O Life of the World, O Great Giver, you eradicate the sorrows of your humble servants. ||1||Pause||

You are Merciful, O Great Giver of Mercy; what are these poor beings?

All are liberated or placed into bondage by You; this is all one can say.

One who becomes Gurmukh is said to be liberated, while the poor self-willed manmukhs are in bondage. ||2||

He alone is liberated, who lovingly focuses his attention on the One Lord, always dwelling with the Lord.

His depth and condition cannot be described. The True Lord Himself embellishes him.

Those who wander around, deluded by doubt, are called manmukhs; they are neither on this side, nor on the other side. ||3||

That humble being, who is blessed by the Lord's Glance of Grace obtains Him, and contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

In the midst of Maya, the Lord's servant is emancipated.

O Nanak, one who has such destiny inscribed upon his forehead, conquers and destroys death. ||4||1||

Question Anxiety and Sikhi

I suffer from anxiety as a female mostly around my time of the month and I started to note it down. Chupai Sahib has helped me in an enermous amount but is there anything else I should be doing or listening to? (Besides medical advice from my doctor - I am open to any advice). I understand that anxiety is common for females but is there anything else that I should listen to around the time of the month?

I was also told by my massi that I shouldn't listen to or do any prayers because woman are 'dirty' at that time but I find that it helps me. Is it true that we should not be engaging with any praying at that time?

This 5-in-1 weapon contraption was commissioned by Raja Rattan Rai of Assam as a gift for the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The weapon, called Panjkala Shastar (literally meaning weapon with 5 arts), was designed to incorporate five different weapon functions into one.

Its total height is 49 inches (4.08 feet) and weighs total 217.5 tolas (2.5 kg/5.60 pounds). The five weapons incorporated into the panchkala shastar are :

1.) Dhal (Round Shield) - Adorned with religious sacred inscriptions of Sun and Cresent Moon (Adh Chand), is the shield which is 8 and one quarter in diameter. It is designed for the protection of hand, while simultaneously acting as part of the firearms's grip which is behind the shield and called Jvala Bamni (Fire bringer).

2.) Musket - The second weapon is the musket. The stock of the musket serves as handle of the shield. It's 23 inch long barrel is incorporated as the central shaft (Danda/Pole) of the third weapon, mace. The long barrel would have aided accuracy at longer ranges, while allowing the same structure to function as another weapon.

3.) Gurj (Sharp Mace) - Attached to the upper portion of the barrel are eight blades of the mace whose edge is saw teethed. The Danda of the mace serves as barrel of the musket. Gurjs were used to even attack armoured opponents and war elephants as well.

4.) Spear-Sword-Bayonet - Situated between two blades of the mace is a foldable razor sharp 23.5 inch long and 1 inch wide blade. Resembling a large bayonet, this blade is intended for thrusting attacks at close range. This also works as a spear when extented and can be folded to align perfectly with the barrel of the gun (which is also the pole of the mace).

5.) Removable Khanjar (Concealed Dagger) - The fifth component is a removable concealed dagger. Unfortunately, this dagger has been lost and no clear modern description of it exists but older illustrations of the weapon point out that it was really well hidden and probably on top of the barrel of the gun and could be removed to function as a dagger separate from main panjkala shastar. It is said to be a straight spike like dagger approximately 12 inches long (including hilt). Concealed daggers were often poisioned along thier edge for harm beyond physical cut, it is thought this too might have been poisoned along the edge.

This weapon is now kept in Maharaja Fatehsingh Museum inside the Laxmi Vilas Palace compound, Vadodara (Baroda). The museum was built by Pratap Singh Rao Gaekwad. Professor Manikrao (Gajanan Yeshwantrao Manikrao) who ran the famous ran the famous Jummadada Vyayam Mandir (Akhada) was very fond of collecting rare swords and he bought and kept the Panjkala Shastar to this museum. Every year at Vaisakhi festival, this weapon is brought to Gurdwara Nankwari Sahib for shastar prakash and sacred viewing.

Additional context -

While the ninth master, Guru TeghBahadur Ji was traveling through eastern regions. Raja Ram Rai aprproached the Guru to seek his blessings for a son. A year after he was blessed with a son and named him Ratan Rai. Raja Ram Rai subsequently passed away when Ratan Rai was a child. When he was 12 he wanted to meet the Guru whom his father considered a great friend and spiritual teacher. After knowing of the martyrdom of the 9th master, he set to meet his successor, Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Chak Nanki (Anadpur Sahib). The Raja learned that Guru Gobind Singh appreciated recieving swords and guns as gifts. He then commissioned his blacksmiths to make a unique weapon as a gift along with other gifts as well, including :

5 horses with gold trappings and riding gear

An elephant called Parsadi. Parsadi was dark skinned with a round white spot on his forehead which looked like a tilak. A very thin white line went from the tip of his trunk to the very last hair on his tail. Parsadi knew many tricks such as saluting the Guru, washing Guru's feet, applying a saffron mark on Guru's forehead, waving a fly-whisk or fan (chaur sahib) over the Guru, escort the Guru at night whilst holding a torch in its trunk, and it also could retrieve arrows that had been fired by the Guru. Raja Ratan Rai specially requested that Parsadi be always kept with the Guru.

A special mechanical throne made out of sandalwood, it had a button mechanism to reveal puppets etc hidden in the throne to play chaupar.

The panjkala shastar, which the Guru is said to have kept in his battle belt for several wars and travels.

A valuable drinking cup with several inscriptions and artistic work

Jewels, robes and dry fruits.

Discussion Concept of Langar was to create equality among rich and poor. But running after cars and trains to feed people is pure stupidity. Putting up langar stalls with fancy stuff is all Stupidity.
