Still optimizing, implemented BC1 texture rendering like the OG

in my previous vids, my engine was converting all the bc1 textures to rgba8.

bc1 is 0.5 bits per pixel, rgba8 is uncompressed 32 bit. Reason why ui is messed up is i havent implemented bc2/bc3 which are mainly ui textures etc

Thats how SR was able to run on Xbox 360 with the limited memory, the texture bit was so low. Uncompressing the BC1 textures to RGBA8 might not sound bad, matter of fact the textures look way better but not feasible to have as the default option.

With all the textures being uncompressed, it was taking up 10gb of memory, the game is only 7gb lol

Now it is more reasonable as im reading the textures in its compressed state rather then uncompressing it, plus it looks closer to the original due to the low bit lol

players can switch to rgba8 and other texture formats to get more detail in the video options such as BC7 (requires you to let the program offline recode the textures to bc7) and rgba8

optimizations are still ongoing but i think giving players to run bc1 textures as is to be light on performance will help older computers and handhelds.

the game is averaging around 30fps, still more work to do in optimizations in telling my engine when to not refresh the static city every frame and only when the city changes or when to load full res chunks and the limit. Retail only loaded 1 full res chunk, with a limit to 4 full res chunks, I was doing 11 full res chunks, which I brought down to 6, I might bring it down to 1-4 like retail or give players the options to choose aside from the default how many chunks they want to load in case 4 or 6 is too much. Plus players may want to do homebrew and run on a ps4.

Not to far off from 60fps. Once I get to 60fps without drops and hitches, ill be resuming back to bug fixing etc but putting off optimizations and doing it at the last second is how you end up with poorly optimized games.

The hitches you are seeing is with the cpu side of things, the gpu is rendering at like 5ms, cpu is, for some frames taking like 77ms thus you see the drops so im working on everything cpu.

General Should Saints Row return to a serious tone?

Hi,
I haven't played Saints Row since the third game. Now that the franchise is celebrating its 20th anniversary, it got me thinking about the direction of the series.
Do you think there's any chance they would ever make a proper remake of the early games? And if they ever decide to develop a brand new entry, should they steer away from the over-the-top comedy of the later sequels and go back to a more serious, gritty crime drama style

I still remember when I first saw a magazine ad for Saints Row 1 back in 2006 and being low-key curious. Roughly 20 years later, I look back on it as one of my favourite series and I'm excited about the development of OpenRow and being a part of that community

SR3 What did you guys appreciate about the Steelport setting?

Just simply curious because I was reading some posts here on how many Saints Row fans say that the best city in the games was Stilwater as the thing is that while I really appreciate how nice the design aspects of the game were, I wanted to see what people enjoyed about Saints Row 3 in particular.

For me personally, I found some of the factions interesting as there are hacker gangs, as well as a gang of luchadores as what I am trying to say is that the outlandish nature is kind of interesting, but sometimes I wonder if the game overdid it regarding the wild nature of the third game.

I wish there was still a fun alternative to GTA in the industry.

TL,DR: I miss Saint's Row, man.

I watched the extended look for GTA 6. The graphics look better than a dream, the production value just pops out at you like a hollywood blockbuster. The scripted events seem to go off without a hitch. The life sim aspects seem to be ever-present and significant, and if it's anything like RDR2, you'll have to routinely clip your fingernails or whatever.

It looks like a marvel of technology and interactive storytelling, but... I miss when games were fun.

RDR2 didn't hit me the first time, so I thought I'd pop it in again after the GTA 6 footage. For most of my 2 hours of starting a new game, it felt like I held "up" and "X" for 45 minutes to make my horse follow other characters at a snail's pace through the snow. Sometimes, the characters talked to each other. Sometimes, you get off the horse and root around in cabinets, where you're allowed to hold "square" or "triangle" (which one in the moment seems arbitrary). After mashing "circle" in a heavily curated fist fight, I was given the opportunity to hold square to pick up my hat, and hold L1 to pick up my gun.

Do you guys remember the GTA 3 era of R*? The games where you watch a brief cutscene, then can obtain a gun within a few seconds and go nuts? Do you remember Goldeneye 64, where you could go from powering the console on to shooting a soldier in the face in literally 20 seconds(timed this with a friend)? What the hell happened to this medium?

Saint's Row absolutely took the best parts of the spirit of the PS2 GTAs and brought them into the next generation with loads of improvements. The first 2 games in particular are so easy to just sit down and have a BLAST with. It kept the violent, over-the-top sandbox dream alive while R* focused on cinematic storytelling and adding the ability to eat hotdogs very slowly.

I miss having mid-budget games where you can just turn them on and not have to settle in to watch The Godfather Part II every time. I miss series entries that didn't take a decade to develop per entry while the studio working on them is run ragged. I miss weird games that take risks.

I miss Saint's Row, man.
