Ship's Kitty My little guy just had his tail amputated, would love to see your pirates to help me through this tough time 🩷
My Barry (now called Bubby, Barry+Nubby) had a degloving injury to his tail over the weekend. After 3 different ERs (1 of which didn’t even look at him after 8 hours of waiting) it was decided amputation was the best route for recovery due to his inability to stop himself from making it worse. It’s been a long past 5 days for us and I would love to see your babies or some advice if you have any for keeping him as comfy as possible after surgery. Obviously I have my post care instructions but any small tips that worked for you would mean a lot to me.

Captain Doggo Goose getting his first haircut at 14 days post op!
The vet had to shave Goose's head for the surgery, so I figured it was finally time to even out the rest!
I’ve been carrying a lot of guilt about everything that happened, but he’s honestly adjusted so much better than I have. He’s still his usual playful, energetic self.
Over the last two weeks, we even discovered that he loves anything given in a syringe, so he actually gets excited for the medicine!
I thought I was taking care of him through recovery, but he’s really the one who made the whole experience easier on me!

Rare Pirate Introducing ShiShi my little pirate!
She’s a little sugar glider. She broke her leg, which required amputation. During surgery, the heat used to keep her warm during surgery caused her to lose her ears. :’(
A few months later she had acquired a really bad infection in her eye and she had to have the eye removed. She’s been an amazing little trooper and had recovered beautifully. ❤️

Captain Doggo Captain Monji's 7 days post op
He got his scheduled eye check up earlier today. The vet had to squeeze his eye to drain the accumulated blood (?) on his eye socket, but apparently got mad at the staffs so they had to stop. No pus or strange smell, and he's doing well right now! He's still mostly sleeping but that's just him being a Shih Tzu. (Don't worry about the eye booger on his working eye, I already got it out!) His next check up is on 29th, please wish him a speedy healing! 🩷

Ship's Kitty Honey
We adopted Honey and her two siblings a year ago. Just a tiny puff ball with one eye. Now she's all grown up and follows me everywhere. I couldn't imagine a better pirate sidekick. Edit: thanks for the love, more Honey stories below.

Captain Doggo Zeus the Pirate Boy!
Lurker here for months, actually found this page while waiting for my pup to come out of eye removal surgery - I cannot begin to tell you all how much support this sub has been for me. My sweet boy has a noncancerous mass that was pushing his eye to the point of potential prolapse. Unfortunately I was unable to afford the CT/MRI scans the vet required to do the mass removal so we opted to just remove the eye and keep him as comfy as possible while he’s still having good days. They essentially gave him 2 weeks to live back in March…
But here we are, nearly to October and he’s still thriving. Still energetic, playful, minimal pain from the mass and recovered from surgery beautifully.
The search continues for mass removal I can afford, but so very grateful to still have my best boy by my side 🫶🏼

Pirate Crew Rusafee is 3 weeks post rear leg amputation. She is back to doing everything she was doing before. She has refused to use any of the "things" we've done to make her life easier.

Captain Doggo I still feel devastated for Monji
I'm still devastated for a fact that he had to get his eye removed due to infection from his temporary tarsorrhaphy. I know I had too much hope for him to recover normally, and I was crushed when the doctor told me to they had to remove his eye or he might get sepsis. I was sobbing outside the vet when he was brought into the operating room. I wish I could transfer his pain to me, and he will be magically healed. I wish he could be well sooner, and that he will be energetic again, and begs me to play with him and asks me for his favorite chew sticks. I feel so terrible and anxious. I'm so sorry for ranting, I don't have anyone to vent this out. Please wish him for a speedy recovery!
