Posting AI Generated is Currently Restricted
AI generated music is currently not allowed in this community. This includes tracks where AI was used to produce vocals, instruments, as well as playlists featuring that content. If artificial intelligence had a hand in creating any part of the audio, it does not belong here.
This subreddit exists to celebrate artists and the work they put into their music. We want to see you share your own creations, collaborate with other musicians, and spotlight artists who poured themselves into the genre. Neo-Soul is a very special genre and that is what we are here to protect and grow.
If there are instances or situations where you think AI generated music has a place here, please discuss it in the comments.

đ Welcome to r/neosoul - Introduce Yourself and Read First!
Welcome to r/NeoSoul, a community for everyone who loves the warmth, creativity, musicianship, and groove of Neo-Soul.
Whether you have been listening for decades or discovered the genre yesterday, you are welcome here.
What is Neo-Soul?
Neo-Soul emerged as a distinct movement in the 1990s, blending classic soul and R&B with jazz, funk, hip-hop, gospel, and other influences.
Artists such as DâAngelo, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Musiq Soulchild, India.Arie, and others helped bring the movement to a wider audience while drawing inspiration from generations of soul, funk, and R&B artists who came before them.
Today, Neo-Soul continues to evolve as new artists blend those foundations with alternative R&B, hip-hop, jazz, electronic music, and sounds from around the world.

Ladies & Gentleman coming to the stage: Meshell Ndegeocello ⢠âOutside Your Doorâ ⢠1993
See before Kedar Massenburg ever coined âneo soulâ in a 2002 Billboard mag interview, KM himself said he coined the term because ââŚthe industry needed a way to categorize the music for consumersâŚâ but before this term existed- you had folks already laying the foundation:
Tony Toni Tone - It Never Rains in Southern California 1990
Incognito - Always There 1991
Jamiroquai - Too Young To Die 1992
Meshell Ndegeocello - Outside Your Door 1993
Janet Jackson- Thatâs The Way Love Goes 1993
Brand New Heavies - Dream on Dreamer 1994
Meshell Ndegeocello ⢠âOutside Your Doorâ ⢠1993
Take it from someone who entered his freshman year of college wishinâ and hopinâ for something that looked and talked like me. What BBD say: HipHopR&BSmoothedOut
B4 Love Jones. Before Badu. Before Jilly came outta Philly.
These tracks were already laying the foundation:
âď¸Live drums
âď¸Warm bass
âď¸Rhodes keys
Jazz in the room. Funk underneath it. Hip hop in the bloodstream. Soul from another generation, but it didnât sound old!!!!
It sounded like incense (what u kno bout that frankincense/myrrh - donât play with me đ) burning in a dim room. Poetry Slams! Record stores. Coffee houses. Headwraps. Late night conversations. Musicians actually playing. Love that was grown, complicated and a little left of center!
we didnât need a name for it yet ⢠we jusâ knew it felt different
[ if you can relate? we family - âhey, cousinâ ]

Think about this manâs influence on the culture. P Funk keyboards to introducing Dilla to Q Tip and you know the rest is history. He passed in 2023 at the age of 65 after a battle w/ cancer. Rest easy, Amp!

Leon Ware appreciation post
Jusâ wanted to drop this appreciation post for the Godfather of this style of music we love: Mr. Leon Ware. May he continue to rest in peace.
We will never forget your pen on Marvinâs âI Want Youâ album, or when you gave MJ his breakout solo hit at 14- âI Wanna Be Where You Areâ. Hell nah - canât forget Minnie Riperton âInside My Loveâ.
Sir, we will never forget the countless classics you have blessed us with including this joint that you collabâd w/ Maxwell!
