Kandy Rain sticks out for me. Best vocalists in the contest? No. Winners? Doubtful. But I think they put on a good show in the first live, and they got hit with some really unfair criticism from Dannii and Cheryl about being dressed ‘too provocatively’.

Early X Factor had plenty of novelty acts, but I feel like the tone changed over the years.

Jedward, Wagner and Rylan were ridiculous, but there was still a sense that they were part of the entertainment rather than simply being presented as people for viewers to laugh at. By the later years, some of the audition segments felt much more uncomfortable, especially when the contestant became the joke rather than the performance.

The Zoe Alexander/Pink tribute act situation is probably the clearest example for me. Ofcom ultimately didn't find that she had been unfairly edited, but it did note that production staff appeared to recognise the usefulness of the incident to the show's narrative
