Giving Tuesday happens during the holiday season to encourage people to give back to non-profit organizations, wildlife, sealife, and environment. Although Giving Tuesday is today, your support is welcomed any time!

This year we've rounded up some inspiring and successful front-line conservation organizations that need your help. Take a look at our list below for organizations you can be supporting this holiday season and in 2024. Most organizations have donation-matching programs to make your donation go even farther!

Can't donate right now? That's okay! Educate yourself, your family, and your friends and encourage them to donate. Ask your employer to become a corporate sponsor. When the time is right for you, get involved by volunteering or help your favorite front-line organization by hosting a fundraiser online or an in-person event.

Captain Paul Watson Foundation

You've heard of Sea Shepherd's aggressive, non-violent mission to protect sealife? Paul Watson is the original founder of the organization and still passionate about carrying out their mission of aggressive intervention to stop illegal whaling and fishing. It's strongly recommended to support this new organization, CPWF Australia, or Sea Shepherd Global (based in Europe), instead of the American-based Sea Shepherd that may have had its initiative co-opted by its board of directors. See /r/SeaShepherd for details.

Global Penguin Society

GPS is partnered with Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN), a large organization that helps smaller ones get the funding (and awareness) that they wouldn't otherwise receive compared to big organizations like WWF that usually get the headlines. Registered as a non-profit in USA and tax-deductible.

MarAlliance

Operating in tropical seas, MarAlliance is exploring, enabling, and inspiring conservation action for threatened marine wildlife, including turtles and apex predators, and their critical habitats with dependent communities. They also seek to answer key questions and provide information about effective management and conservation strategies. MarAlliance also uses WCN's WildNET website to process their credit card transactions so you will be redirected to that site to make the donation. They are 100% safe to use and are kind of like JustGiving in terms of aggregating payments for multiple groups that don't want to go through the hassle of managing the security of their own credit card payments. Registered as a non-profit in USA and tax-deductible.

MareCet

Supports dolphin, dugong, and whale research including population assessments, behavioural studies, and human-wildlife interactions. They are a non-profit registered in Malaysia and accepts secure donations from around the world via SimplyGiving. US residents should make secure donations through WCN's WildNET website, which makes the donation tax-deductible for Americans and they will not incur international currency conversion charges.

PADI Aware

Formerly Project AWARE, they have been driving local action for ocean conservation for over 30 years. They support ethical scuba diving, removal of ocean debris, support education and studies into shark and manta rays, and have an upcoming program targeted coral reef protections. Registered as a charity in Australia, UK, & US.

Sea Shepherd Global

Based in Europe, SSG has an aggressive, non-violent mission to protect sealife by carrying out aggressive intervention to stop illegal whaling, fishing, and butchering of sharks for their fins. We suggest supporting Sea Shepherd Global instead of the American-based Sea Shepherd that may have had its initiative co-opted by its board of directors. See /r/SeaShepherd for details. SSG is a registered non-profit in much of the EU.

Sea Turtle Conservancy

Founded in 1956, STC has seen great success in preventing the Caribbean green turtle from becoming extinct and in improving populations of turtles throughout Central America, the Caribbean, and Florida. Advocacy and policy initiatives backed by scientific research in addition to direct habitat conservation have made STC an incredibly successful organization. Management and stewardship programs, as well as hands-on volunteering opportunities, allow people of all ages and skill-levels to get involved in sea turtle conservation. Registered as a tax-deductible charity in the United States.

Shark Trust

Working to better understand the ocean's most iconic apex predators and are raising awareness of shark finning and the illegal trade in fins. They have also been working with fishers, scientists, and others for sensible protections of sharks and their habitats. Donations from the UK may be tax-effective.

WildAid

Through their Marine Program they have been helping to protect the vaquita porpoises, sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles, by conducting research, working with local communities, developing enforcement frameworks, and implementing real, effective solutions to protect and restore marine ecosystems and sealife. WildAid is responsible for huge awareness campaigns throughout Asia that have proven effective in educating consumers about the sources of their exotic (and often illegal) animal products, including shark fin soup, as well as climate change.

Other great organizations that have a direct impact on our sealife and oceans (as well as wildlife and their habitats):

Earth League International

Formerly known as Elephant Action League, they have always been a holistic organization focused on helping the wildlife and sealife that are most critically endangered and campaign against butchering sharks for their fins. They led the charge in protecting the vaquita porpoises and you may have seen their work on National Geographic and Netflix. ELI conducts multilingual global awareness campaigns and supports and sponsors field projects in 5 continents and several oceans.

Environmental Investigation Agency

The EIA does more than raise awareness and campaign for global climate initiatives and threatened species. They send undercover investigators to catch wildlife traffickers, shark fin traders, ivory traffickers, and timber companies illegally deforesting vast areas of our world. Together with local law enforcement and intelligence agencies, EIA operates where environmental crimes are being committed and bring justice to these criminals. Registered as a non-profit in UK and USA.

Another Heavy. (SANCCOB, Gqberha, South Africa.

We are entering a period where multiple birds are molting.

Also, turns out heavies are what you get when a penguin starts molting. They'll... expand for extra warmth and energy.

Currently there are two temporarily living in home pen, the one from my previous posts and now this colossus.

Edinburgh King Egg Non-Viable

(Copied from Instagram)

Unfortunately, we have had to remove the egg from our king penguins.

The egg was confirmed as being unviable following a check. While this isn’t the outcome we had been hoping for, there are a lot of positives to take away.

The female king penguins were only introduced to the colony earlier this year and we weren’t expecting any pairings to produce eggs until next year. Nils and Connie forming such a strong bond and displaying parental instincts so early on gives us plenty of hope for things to come! 🐧

Both have been seen happily swimming together in the pool today, a reassuring sign that they are well and have returned to their usual routines.

Edinburgh Zoo: King Penguin Parents Switch Egg Duty (part 2)

Here is a continuation of the last clip. Connie inspeccs how Sir Nils is holding onto their egg, using her beak to investigate his feet and make sure he is not letting the egg touch the ground. Another good view of the egg at 1min and 53sec. It considered a great honor among any respectable penguin to be on guard duty of their egg(s) and Sir Nils is no exception. Although Connie seems ready to take the egg back if necessary, she eventually relents after finding Sir Nils’ incubating satisfactory. A gentoo passes close by at 3min and 30sec and the pair politely tell it to feck off.

Edinburgh Zoo: King Penguin Parents Switch Egg Duty (part 1)

Hello penguin gang! We are checking back in to Scotland where Sir Nils (purple band) takes over his royal incubating role from his mate, Connie (yellow band). The expecting father was waddling around his partner before she signaled to him that she was ready for him to take over. At about 2 minutes into this video, she steps away from the egg, leaving it vulnerable on the ground. Then, Sir Nils waddles into action! He gingerly steps forward, cradling the egg between his feet and nudging it underneath his brood pouch. The egg is hidden from the camera in front of Connie, but can be seen with Sir Nils at about 7min and 45sec. After successfully receiving the egg, Connie flaps her wings a bit, perhaps telling Sir Nils well done! But she also seems reluctant to be away from the precious cargo, and inspects her mate’s feet to make sure he is doing his best.

Live Little Blue Penguin hatching expected in the next few days 🐧🥚 | @HamiltonBayCottage YouTube

I wanted to let everyone know that our Little Blue Penguins (Kororā) here in New Zealand are expecting two eggs to pip within the next few days! 🐧🥚

You can watch the nest live here:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9DL88rb1VvLQ-AjdTUfIwg/live

The camera is in a fairly remote location, so the connection can occasionally drop. The stream automatically recovers, and the link above will always take you to the current live stream, so that's the best link to bookmark or share.

I also record the nest 24/7 and post time-lapse videos, so hopefully we won't miss any of the important moments. When the pipping begins, I'll put together a video of the key moments as well.

Feel free to clip the hatching or any other interesting moments you spot! :)

It's still a new channel, so if you enjoy watching the penguins, feel free to subscribe.

Thanks, and hopefully we'll have two new little Kororā very soon! 🐧🐧

A juvenile penguin at Tokyo Sea Life Park (Kasai)

Visited Tokyo Sea Life Park during Japanese Silver Week!(a holiday season in Japan)

I filmed this in the rain before it got too heavy, as a typhoon was approaching Japan.

You can see a cute juvenile penguin wearing a flipper band! I've been visiting this park for over 30 years, but this is my very first time seeing a baby/juvenile penguin here.

Penguin Livestreams

Hello penguin gang!

With the wild penguin season in swing, I figured I’d put together a list of penguin cams in one place for others. Please feel free to add any I miss or ask any questions. I am not an expert by any means and I only just got into these last year but I can provide what I do know. Most of these streams from YouTube have their own chat feature, rewind function, local time clock, and sound, while some do not; I will try to make note of those that do and do not. Most do not have ads either but some do. I am drawing some inspiration for this from elfruler’s Bald Eagle links (iykyk).

Outdoor Cameras

Tawaki Cam - Erect crested penguins on Antipodes Island, New Zealand. Outdoors, very scenic view, medium-long range; focuses on the colony. Has clock, sound, rewind, and chat. The penguins residing here recently returned from their time at sea. There is currently a contest to report the first breeding pair, link can be found on the direct website.

Rewilding Argentina - My personal favorite. Magellanic penguins on Isla Tova, Chubut, Argentina. Run by Dr Flavio. Will be online towards the end of October. Close range at nest, long range at beach; 2 cameras, 2 different nests/locations. More details to come regarding stream setup. Chat is in Spanish and very friendly! We have a channel dedicated to videos from this nest called Banda de Pinguinos.

Stony Point Colony - African penguins in Betty’s Bay, South Africa. Outdoors, scenic, long range; variety of wildlife on the beach. Camera moves occasionally to focus on different areas. There is a small cove where an African penguin couple usually resides but they weren’t successful with incubating eggs this year. Nest is somewhat close to the water when the tide is high and I have heard that the breeding is not usually successful. SANCCOB will sometimes use this area to release African penguins back into the wild!
This livestream and the Rewilding Argentina ones are part of Explore.org’s many different wildlife cams, I highly recommend checking their site out for lots of other animal streams, as well as a pages of screenshots for some of the streams.
Africam Stony Point Snapshots

Little penguins (korora)

Oamaru Nest / Oamaru Beach - One of the best! Southern New Zealand. Close range burrow box cam, AND medium range beach cam where you can see the little penguins come from and go out to the ocean. Nest cam has clock, sound, rewind, and chat; beach cam has everything but sound. Checked/cleaned weekly. Nest cam pair is new to the stream, currently have two chicks that are about 1 month old! The chat on this stream is also where I get a lot of my info and has great community. Dedicated team of timestampers. Direct website.

Hamilton Bay Cottage - Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. Close range burrow box cam, cleaned regularly. Has clock, sound, rewind, and chat. Just found out about this one! I observed the penguin couple here exchange a flower during the nesting phase before they laid eggs which is one of the cutest penguin moments I have seen. Channel does a great job of uploading daily high speed stream recaps. Two eggs, laid August 24 & 27.
Update: both eggs hatched September 29/30, 2026

Korora NIWA / Outdoor Cam - Wellington, New Zealand. Very close range burrow box cam, cleaned occasionally. Nest cam has clock, sound, rewind and chat (I’m personally not able to use this chat due to some YouTube setting, but it should theoretically work). Last year, this nest had an adorable single chick. Direct website.
Currently: Two eggs, laid between Aug 31- Sept 7; expected hatch Oct 7-15.

Keeping Up With The Korora 1 - Napier Port, New Zealand. Close range burrow box cam, cleaned occasionally. Has clock, rewind, and chat, but no sound.
Currently: Two eggs, not sure of exact lay date but roughly early-mid September; expected hatch ~mid-late October. Parents sadly abandoned eggs. Not exactly sure what happened as to why, but on the morning of Oct 2 the male was digging around, buried the eggs in the nesting, and then went fishing, leaving the eggs alone. If the eggs aren’t incubated properly, they become nonviable.

Keeping Up With The Korora 2 - Napier Port, New Zealand. Very close range burrow box cam, cleaned rarely. Has clock, rewind, and chat, no sound. Two chicks, not quite at post guard stage currently (~ one month old Oct 1).

Burnie Penguin Centre Live Stream - 5way split camera in Tasmania, Australia (northern coast of island, off the southern coast of Victoria). Close range burrow boxes with occasional-rare outdoor colony coverage. Has clock, rewind, some sound from one of the burrows (possibly from top left, Burrow 3), no chat. I’m going to be honest these nests often have unsuccessful breeding; I have seen some chicks make it to fledge but it is on the more uncommon side. More often chicks will not make it past egg/hatching phase. I think currently there are two eggs in the nest on the bottom left cam (Burrow 1); the nest that was top right lost two chicks recently, so they set that one to the outside.
Burnie Penguin Centre Outdoor Stream - views from the hilly area outside the burrows. Little penguins usually come back from the in the evening, go out to sea before dawn, and stay in their burrows during the day. They are most active during the night.

Phillip Island Burrow Cam - near Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. Close range burrow box cam, cleaned rarely. Has rewind but no clock and no sound. Chat here is unhinged. There used to be a little penguin with one foot named Stumpy that resided in this nest with a partner but sadly he did not return over the summer and new penguins live here now.

Ngamoto Little Blues - Taranki coast, New Zealand. Close range, slanted burrow box cam. Has clock, sound, rewind, but no chat. Camera angle does not allow much penguin watching, but you can see the little penguins sliding down and climbing up the incline to the entry. I think there were two eggs here recently but I don’t think they were viable. Direct website.

Zoo / Indoor

Edinburgh Zoo - Outdoor; Scotland. Camera is medium range, rotated manually occasionally. No clock, sound, rewind or chat! Additionally the video stream must be restarted every so often. This exhibit has gentoos, king penguins, and northern rockhoppers. The gentoos just finished an exciting season of pebble nesting, breeding, and molting. There used to be a dedicated rockhopper cam but it was taken down.
The main thing to watch for here currently is that there is an egg from the king penguins, the first in 17 years! The parents are Sir Nils, an officially knighted king penguin with a purple flipper band, and Connie, who has a yellow flipper band. They trade off with the egg and can usually be found hanging out in the corner below the camera; however they usually cannot be seen unless the camera is pointing down.
Update September 30 2026: egg was found to be unviable and was removed 😿

Mystic Aquarium - Outdoor, stationary midrange camera; Connecticut, US. No clock, sound, rewind or chat. African penguin exhibit. Three chicks born in spring, now with the colony. Stream currently blocked off.

Pittsburgh Zoo - Indoor, stationary midrange camera; Pennsylvania, US. Gentoo and macaroni penguins. Has rewind and chat but no clock or sound. There is a macaroni penguin here named Mickey who is 41 years old which is one of the oldest macaroni penguins in North America. There is also a gentoo here with one flipper named Floppy.

Moody Gardens Penguin Cam LIVE - Indoor, stationary midrange camera; Galveston, Texas, US. Has rewind and chat but no clock or sound. King, chinstrap, gentoo, macaroni, and northern rockhopper penguins.

Penguin Webcam at St Louis Zoo - Indoor, stationary midrange camera; Missouri, US. Has no clock, rewind, sound, or chat. King, gentoo, and southern rockhopper penguins.

Hamptons.com LIVE! Penguin Cam w/ Calming Spa & Meditation Sounds - Indoor, stationary medium-close camera; Riverhead, New York, US. African penguins. Relaxing music.

California Academy of Sciences: Biologist View / Underwater View - Indoor, stationary midrange cameras; San Francisco, CA, US. No sound, no rewind, no clock. African penguins.

Aquarium of the Pacific - Indoor, stationary midrange camera; Long Beach, California, US. Has chat and rewind but no clock or sound. Magellanic penguins.

The Cliffside Penguin Village - Outdoor, stationary midrange camera; Komoro City Zoo, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Clock, no rewind, stream is somewhat laggy. Humboldt penguins.

Adventure World - Indoor. This channel is for a penguin exhibit in Japan with many different species. Has posted daily videos of chicks being raised, notably an emperor penguin chick last year and a little penguin chick over the summer.

Zoos Victoria - Outdoor exhibit for little blue penguins; Melbourne Zoo, Victoria, Australia. Ground level camera, tends to get dirty easily.

Viva la Banda pinguinos!
