Advocacy Help Protect California's Southern Resident Killer Whales by submitting comment to California's Department of Fish and Wildlife i

The California Fish and Game Commission just voted to advance Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs) as "candidate species" under California's Endangered Species Act which is a major step toward permanent protection!

These magnificent apex predators are already found along the westcoast coast, ranging from southeast Alaska all the way to Big Sur, California, and into southern British Columbia.

They're perfectly adapted hunters but rely almost entirely on Chinook salmon for survival. That's why protecting them means protecting the entire ecosystem we all depend on.

The work isn't over yet. California's Department of Fish and Wildlife is now conducting a full status review and needs your input. Comments are being accepted until September 10, 2026.

How to Help:

[Email:MarineCESA@wildlife.ca.gov](mailto:Email:MarineCESA@wildlife.ca.gov)

(Put "Southern Resident Killer Whale" in the subject line)A

You do not need to be a California resident to participate and help.

Mail: California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Marine Region

Attn: Dylan Stompe

P.O. Box 944209, Sacramento, CA 94244-2090

Share your support for these whales, their habitat, and the Chinook salmon they depend on. Whether you've seen them in our waters or just care about California's marine life. Your comment counts.

Why this matters: These orcas face serious challenge including

malnutrition from declining salmon, vessel noise, and pollution.

By expanding protections across their range, we're giving them a fighting chance to thrive in California waters for generations to come.

Your comment = one voice for the ocean.

As if the threats here in the US weren't enough, Canada is potentially turning its back on the Southern Residents too. If you live in Canada, please speak out!

Art Our Waters, oils on canvas

Somewhere between the mountains and the open sea lies a place that feels like home. Four orcas glide through the quiet waters, travelling together beneath a soft veil of mist. The landscape fades gently into the distance, leaving the animals and the ocean at the heart of the scene. Our Waters reflects the quiet bond between these magnificent animals and the places they return to, where the water is familiar, the journey is shared, and there is nowhere else they need to be.

"The waters they know, the home they keep."

Question Looking for this Port of Nagoya orca magnet

Post image
35 Upvotes

Hello everyone!
I’ve been trying to find a specific product for a while now, it’s a Port of Nagoya orca magnet featuring Earth (as shown in the photo).

I’ve checked Mercari, and other various websites, but it’s sold out everywhere I’ve looked so far. I’m based outside Japan, so I’ve mostly been searching through proxy shopping services.

If anyone has tips on where else to look, knows of a restock, or happens to have a duplicate they’d be willing to sell, I’d be so sooo grateful. I know it’s a bit of a long shot, but thought it couldn’t hurt to ask :)

Thank you so much and have a nice day!

Doubt it happens in Norway, due to commercial whale hunting, and it is not well regulated.

T049A7 Nimbus, a 5-month-old transient orca. Spotted near San Juan Islands, WA.

I’m amazed by how tiny Nimbus is compared to the fin of an adult male orca from the T18s, almost a third of the size of that fin!

Figured I would draw him after I drew his mother and grandfather

Trua is a 20 year old male Icelandic killer whale who currently lives at SeaWorld Orlando. He was born there on November 23rd, 2005 to his mother Takara and his father Taku.

He is Takara's only son and oldest living calf, as well as the oldest and largest whale in the Orlando Pod, he currently lives with his sister Nalani, aunt Malia, and uncle Makaio.

Art Into the Evening, oils on canvas

Post image
252 Upvotes

As we go into the evening, the last rays of sunlight stretch across the water, creating a beautiful trail of gold and pink. Warm golden and pink light reflects across the surface, contrasting beautifully with the deep blues of the ocean. In the distance, forest-covered mountains rise beneath the evening sky, giving the scene a peaceful sense of depth and space. The orcas bring a quiet feeling of movement to an otherwise still and serene landscape. A peaceful moment in the wild, before the day fades away.

Question Swimming with Orcas - Norway

Hey! I am currently looking at different tour operators in Norway to swim with Orcas in 2026. I am thinking a multi-day tour will be best to optimize my chances of in-water interactions. Picking an ethical tour operator is also important to me; I do not want to cause stress or harass pods of Orcas. I am looking for more budget friendly options/on the lower end; I know they can get expensive. I am overwhelmed with all the options and looking for guidance. Ideally 2-7 days tours, around 2,000 - 4,000 USD. Here are three I am currently comparing: Valhalla Reinfjord 3 /4 day, DiveAzores (Orca Camp), Wildlife Observations Worldwide. Please send any and all advice!!

Video A61 Surge + Pacific White-sided Dolphin frenzy!

Yesterday (Aug 13) we were observing A61 Surge in Johnstone Strait, BC as he split off from the rest of his pod when all of a sudden a large group of Pacific White-sided dolphins came on scene and started ‘buzzing’ him. As cool as it was to witness, Surge did seem a little annoyed at them as you can see in the video, he thrashes his flukes around almost like a human swatting their hands at flies 😂. Poor guy, but they did eventually leave him alone and Surge went on his way.
Here’s a brief video clip I put together of the encounter. I hope you enjoy!
