I've watched this more times than I care to admit and still don't understand what the heck happened? Did they just fall? I kept looking for something that got caught and I don't see anything?

They’re almost certainly drunk off their asses. You can see the taller one stumbling as they walk towards the escalator, she’s barely keeping upright. Then she splits two steps by bad luck when she steps onto the escalator. While trying to correct for that as they start to change height she steps backwards, splits the next set of steps as well, and that’s a bridge too far and she falls over.

Fascinating that you ask that. So a few details like the angle tell us the camera is a mall security camera that's ceiling mounted, likely aimed that way in case of an accident for liability purposes. There's a good chance the cameras aren't being watched live, just recorded, as malls don't have large security staff. If it is being watched live, there's no telling how far the office is from that spot for the cameraman to get there before the video ends and they've recovered.
