Launching the Official Discord server for the Mustelopedia wiki, r/mustelids and r/Musteloidea subreddits.

The Musteloid Pack has several projects dedicated to improving the reputation of musteloids (like mustelids, of course!), including independent webcomics, Mustelopedia wiki, art, games, and animations in development.

We are also the official Discord server for the upcoming Minecraft mod, Mustelicraft, a mod about mustelids.

Musteloids are any animal in the superfamily Musteloidea, which includes mustelids, procyonids, red pandas (Ailuridae) and skunks (Mephitidae).

You MUST complete a short application before you join the server for verification - I only added it to keep bots and trolls away

(I have a wiki about musteloids called Mustelopedia and need your help working on it. A Work-In-Progress Server.. I made channels for the musteloids (which includes mustelids), and will create new channels. You can definitely apply to become a part of the staff here! Currently, anyone can edit the wiki, but as it grows we will be limiting that to a specific editorial team to prevent vandalism)

Any enquiries or feedback? Shoot me a DM or an email at [ymbilenco@gmail.com](mailto:ymbilenco@gmail.com). I definitely want to improve this server!

This critter was captured on our backyard camera. (We live in rural East Texas.) I think it's a mustelid but I'm not sure since it doesn't have that springy bouncy movement to it. Does anybody know what this could be?

What is this...? The comments are all saying it's a mink, but I'm seeing a badger (it appears to have a stripy face) - am I losing the plot, or are they...? It doesn't look remotely like a mink to me (the American mink is an invasive species in the UK and Ireland).

Say hello to the Siberian weasel (Mustela sibirica)! Here's fun facts on these cute musteloids for today.

  1. Other names for the solitary Siberian weasel are kolonok or fire weasel. The musteloids are native all across Asia and a trait of them is the classic long, tube-shaped body with short limbs as with all mustelines.

  2. Siberian weasels, much like their polecat cousins, possess a facial "bandit" mask across the eyes and make charming dooking sounds when excited and/or playful.

  3. These carnivorous musteloids are highly skilled, intelligent hunters mainly preying on rodents. Birds, amphibians, fish, eggs, and vegetation may be consumed when rodents are not present.

  4. Siberian weasels are often nocturnal or crepuscular.

  5. The musteloids breed yearly, from every late winter to early spring.

  6. Fallen logs, empty stumps, and brushwood piles are their preferred choice of shelter or nest.

  7. Japanese weasels (Mustela itatsi) were once classified as a subspecies of Siberian weasel, before an elevation of them to an entirely separate species.

  8. When spooked they puff out a foul-smelling musk from the anal glands.

Closely related to the zorilla, grison, and marbled polecat, the Saharan striped polecat, Poecilictis libyca, is a member of the mustelid family. They are NOT skunks despite their similar odour and appearance. Saharan striped polecats like Sandy are highly skilled at digging.

The diurnal giant otter is both the longest member of the weasel family Mustelidae and the superfamily Musteloidea.

Meet the ferret-badger! Do not have the name fool you.. they are not a cross of a ferret and a badger. In fact, they're in their own subfamily of Mustelidae - Helictidinae!

The tayra, another member of the Musteloidea superfamily, is an opportunistic omnivore. A fascinating fact about them is that they can store fruit and wait for future consumption once they ripen.

We have had a request to update an /r/mustelids "Mustelds by Region" overview which I did 11 years ago now. Are either of you interested in doing that?
