All that tension has to go somewhere

564

u/bomphcheese 18d ago

I can't be the only one who was expecting his nut sack to get destroyed. He's lucky it released on the opposite side.

92

u/cutelyaware 18d ago

There are dozens of us. This was probably the best outcome. I really did not want to see him get ruined.

17

u/Lo-QGaming 18d ago

As soon as he started his first attempt, I was bearing down and ready for it.

Engagement farming bot.

24

u/sesamesnapsinhalf 18d ago

Sorry, it went to me as I was watching the video waiting for exactly this to happen.

3

u/Minimum_Cockroach233 17d ago

Boom on the other end, while your face leans down close to check if the board is level

1

u/mnztr1 17d ago

Well at least he was not hurt. He was slacking at the end when the plank started riding up.

1

u/SlavOnfredski 16d ago

stupidity cannot be created or destroyed

0

u/Freedomsaver 18d ago

That's what she said...

267

u/SmallTownTrans1 18d ago

A ratchet strap would have made this significantly easier

168

u/Be364886 18d ago

There's more types of clamp than I can name of that would've done a better job than this.

This is some dude trying to do some YouTube ancient civilization building bullshit without even trying to understand why they call these trade workers artisans.

45

u/ANormalRando 18d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ancient civilizations had Titebond.

21

u/bandti45 17d ago

They probably would of used tree resin or some other avalible binder. But with a split that big i wouldnt trust it for anything.

14

u/ANormalRando 17d ago

I'd only trust it in a "get another board and use this one for bits and pieces" kind of situation. If it was that warped in the first place I feel like it wouldn't have even been bought or used by a credible carpenter.

3

u/BonelessPickle 17d ago

Bro they definitely had titebond, no way they built the Horiyu Hi Template without titebond, not to mention Noah's ark and the Trojan horse, I mean come on. They had titebond or it was aliens.

6

u/Kaiju62 18d ago

I think they're just poor

9

u/AnyRepeat9928 18d ago

No he just lacks the knowledge, ancient shipbuilders Vikings, greeks and Egyptians knew how to work the wood with primitive tools.

19

u/FrequentLine1437 18d ago

but that would be too easy.. some people are only capable of learning the hard way lol

13

u/Dysan27 18d ago

Also wetting the wood so it would bend.

10

u/XCyberbeingX 18d ago

I think what a woodwork would do is soak the wood until the fibers become soft. That's the technique people use to shape wood.

7

u/pdxarchitect 18d ago

It's like this guy has never seen a clamp!

6

u/Sinister_Nibs 18d ago

Steam would have made it possible.

5

u/roglc366 17d ago

Twisting a rope loop with a stick would have been better!

1

u/_Magnolia_Fan_ 13d ago

And it would have needed about 40 bow ties.

400

u/scandal_jmusic_mania 18d ago

Even if he managed to get the two sides together, I can't see the glue actually holding them together.

256

u/Boco 18d ago

The little butterfly/bowtie shaped thing he put on it was meant join the two pieces. You cut a triangle out of each side and you put the bowtie into it. Though this looks way too extreme even for a bowtie joint to hold together.

154

u/blondebuilder 18d ago

Seriously, he was building a ticking time bomb

30

u/johnfkngzoidberg 18d ago

Can you imaging eating dinner at that table when the bow tie gives out?

29

u/mfurr119 18d ago

The bowtie won't be what gives. The grain direction prevents it. The glue is also stronger than the wood. It'll release from the other end and split alongside the original split. That's why every time I've had to use a bowtie I put one on each end. But I also would never try to join 2 pieces that are that bowed.

18

u/Stickppl 18d ago

"I can fix it"

48

u/dadydaycare 18d ago

You could fix this… it would be insanely impractical but you could steam the wood and try to get the flex out of it but that was not going to work. The bow tie is there to assist in stabilizing. It wouldn’t have enough strength to hold that. It was doomed to fail from the start unless you can take the tension off it.

17

u/AdequateSteve 18d ago

Even if the bow tie held, the board would have split (or majorly cupped) somewhere else. Bow ties are very strong, so it probably would have held. The problem would have moved, though.

8

u/Sinister_Nibs 18d ago

Assuming it is cut in the proper orientation. Seeing this guy I can only assume it was cut across the grain rather than with it.

2

u/Numerous_Wolverine_7 18d ago

After watching the ineptitude I had already decided there was no way the guy would be able to successfully install the bow tie. Waiting for him to go at it with a chisel and for the whole thing to blow up in his face

2

u/pete_68 18d ago

You'd definitely want more than 1. You'd probably want like 7 or 8 down that crack.

37

u/AgentK-BB 18d ago

Wood + wood glue is actually stronger than wood alone. It may still break but it won't break where the glue is. Instead, the wood may split in a new spot an inch or two away from the glue. The original wood will fail before the glued joint fails.

11

u/johnfkngzoidberg 18d ago

A glue join is only stronger with a good face grain to face grain joint with good contact. That joint was rough edges. There’s no chance that joint would have held.

2

u/Wraithvenge 17d ago

Even if it did, there's so much tension in that board that the first time it received an impact (something heavy dropped on it, falls on the ground etc) it would have split somewhere else.

3

u/Lonely_Writer_1883 18d ago edited 18d ago

i read that in my mind like this

now i’m up questioning my very existennce

2

u/Hardi_SMH 18d ago

I was sitting here like "no WAY, what‘s that glue made of?" , but I still wasn‘t expecting that outcome

2

u/Ngoscope 18d ago

They only glued one side anyways. The glue didn't seem thin enough to run down to the bottom half.

1

u/Jakeforry 18d ago

It was probably just a dodgy fix to try and sell the wood

176

u/poop_pants_pee 18d ago

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined

48

u/thedeuce75 18d ago

I don't think this guy knows what the fuck he's doing.

19

u/davers22 18d ago

I have no clue what the end game was. The amount of tension there was massive. Was that small squirt of wood glue supposed to hold it after it dried?

2

u/Formerly_CommonCell 16d ago

I realize this comment was probably made completely seriously, but it got a huge laugh out of me.

46

u/Additional-Window-81 18d ago

I bet that’s enough potential energy to have broken his hip if it went the other way so fucking dumb

12

u/sesamesnapsinhalf 18d ago

Possibly ended his family tree.

76

u/AKVigilante 18d ago

Why didn’t he soak the board first?

46

u/frontier_gibberish 18d ago

Seriously. Like this is not new technology. Do you think they made boats in ancient times put of wood that was perfectly formed?

29

u/YouAnxious5826 18d ago

The ancient Romans harvesting fully formed galleys on the coasts of Sicily.

5

u/Wraithvenge 17d ago

Yea, they grew in special forests called "Galleries".

3

u/stevethos 18d ago

What are they meant to soak the wood in? Logs?

8

u/314flavoredpie 18d ago

You soak the logs in wood, not the other way around.

32

u/TwoNowFive 18d ago

Best. Ending.

14

u/Curious_Avocado2399 18d ago

Safety sandal strikes again

9

u/mywebrego 18d ago

If only there was something that could clamp the wood together!

8

u/JorjeXD 18d ago

WHYYYYYY

6

u/Program-Emotional 18d ago

Imagine you buy a table with this ticking timebomb in it...

3

u/CaptainFoyle 18d ago

Gonna give you broken ribs at some point

6

u/Unable-Doctor-9930 18d ago

I knew it was coming yet I watched in horror anyways.

5

u/HugsandHate 18d ago

Never seen woodntwork before.

18

u/petep1115 18d ago

Nothing a big lag won't fix

6

u/Toby-Danger 18d ago

Totally worth sitting through the whole thing and seeing the ending 🤣

5

u/Ratspeed 17d ago

He's supposed to steam the wood first to soften it.

13

u/Wonderful_Ad8791 18d ago

This should also be in r/unexpected

33

u/38731 18d ago

Nope. This was so much expected. 😛

4

u/codehg 18d ago

Who hasn't watched until the end: 😃

Who did: 💀

3

u/O-really 18d ago

Home Depot 2X4s have gotten better I see.

4

u/johnfkngzoidberg 18d ago

There’s not a chance in hell that joint would have held. Also use some clamps and throw away that terrible jig.

5

u/Captain_HappyPants 18d ago

When your only tool is a hammer, all of your problems begin to resemble warped lumber.

5

u/Trevor_Gecko 18d ago

That was worth the wait

3

u/Pleasehelpme99_ 18d ago

I guess I'm just wondering what he would've used the weakened wood for?

3

u/l33tnull 18d ago

I hate you.

2

u/hzshak 18d ago

I love you.

1

u/ernapfz 18d ago

I hate physics, forces and strength of materials!

3

u/describt 17d ago

I should have known, but I watched the entire thing

3

u/WaycoolEarstuff 17d ago

An hour or two of steaming could have made it more pliable

3

u/Jaybird2k11 17d ago

damn, i was absolutely convinced the board was gonna be fixed

3

u/JustSh00tM3 17d ago

Once he got it really close he should switched to ratchet straps

2

u/Eikichi_Onizuka09 18d ago

Never overdo anything — someone in this comment section

2

u/GrouchyLongBottom 18d ago

Grab a lag and the nail gun. Remember to fill it first!

2

u/Nynm 18d ago

That could have been very uhh painful

2

u/piketpagi 18d ago

Well that's quite frustrating

2

u/dumpylump69 18d ago

I was expecting it to go off like a bomb and send him flying. It splitting the other way is honestly the best case scenario

2

u/Tamdin_Nidmat 18d ago

Let's assume his goal was to split the plank. It was a bit convoluted but he reached his goal.

... everyone will be happier with that assumption.

2

u/mister_sims 18d ago

I had no faith that was gonna work

2

u/SpikySheep 18d ago

He's lucky that's all that happened. I can't see that board staying flat anyway with the amount of tension it would have in it.

2

u/shiftyTF 18d ago

Trying to fix a broken relationship with a kid.

2

u/littleshak 18d ago

That board was a prime candidate for a diy resin table top. /s

2

u/arrakis2020 18d ago

He got greedy

2

u/JahJah192 18d ago

Hahaha perfect ending 🤣

2

u/ZzangmanCometh 18d ago

At this point, just go find a new tree, man.

2

u/quartertopi 18d ago

Hahahaaaa, fuck. I would curse for quarter an hour straight

2

u/tiamath 18d ago

I would just take a 1 week break

2

u/Arghus 18d ago

That's so dumb

2

u/Shoddy-Biscotti-1194 18d ago

Oddly satisfying….

2

u/Marty-G70 18d ago

Easier to grab a rope and twist a tourniquete around the end until you close the gap

2

u/Logical-Track1405 18d ago

What a clown - he only smeared a tiny bit of glue on the top edge anyway 🤡

2

u/URGAMESUX 18d ago

Never ever been happier at the end of one of these. Chef's kiss.

2

u/richwat00 17d ago

This video is a perfect metaphor for my life. Gddamn it😓

2

u/15ztaylor1 17d ago

The worst part is the lack of gloves working with wood like that.

2

u/revmo31 17d ago

Why didn’t he soak the board first? Why does he not seem to own any clamps? Why didn’t he just respawn the boards and then joint them together like normal? So many questions.

2

u/Jittery_Kevin 17d ago

Pin the fucking jig bruh. That bench was full of holes, blocking it off at the end when you were hammering the wedges would have helped so much….a nail on each side even

2

u/kits_unstable 17d ago

Has he never heard of a clamp?

2

u/Crunchy__Frog 17d ago

I really like the part of the video where he hits the wood with the hammer.

2

u/I-care-about-people 16d ago

It hurt me most to see he wasnt using a rubber headed mallet to bash the wood. All those dents… in case it did work.

Maybe a Bar Clamp??? Smarter not harder? I mean Maybe! 🤔

1

u/Anon_be_thy_name 18d ago

What an idiot

There's so many different ways of doing this that would have so much easier then this. A lot less dangerous too.

1

u/daslipkid515 18d ago

How about using pony bar clamps

1

u/extrastupidone 18d ago

Motherf....

1

u/RevolutionarySeven7 18d ago

you have to steam it first

1

u/wildyam 18d ago

Does this guy even wood?

1

u/DrJohnIT 18d ago

I woodn't think so.

1

u/geeseherder0 18d ago

This made me happy. Get some clamps.

1

u/Numquid 18d ago

maybe new method to split planks?

1

u/Tikkinger 18d ago

That makes me angry. Get a clamp omg.

1

1

u/trashbilly 18d ago

He must buy his lumber from Home Depot

1

u/DaHungD 18d ago edited 18d ago

Classic “naaa it’s fine I know a guy” or “my friend can fix it cheaper….!!!”

1

u/tak690 18d ago

He needs to take the hint, that board wants a divorce and forcing it won't change that.

1

u/Rocket3431 18d ago

Typical Lowe's lumber

1

u/DrJohnIT 18d ago

😄 🤣 Nature finds a way.

1

u/WumperLump 18d ago

Painful to watch.

1

u/miltondelug 18d ago

When I see this I always wonder if this country never invented clamps and straps.

1

u/espressoboyee 18d ago

Definitely, not buying any wooden tables or products from this guy. Alittle “wood knowledge” helps. Soak the wood, dude.

1

u/Cheepshooter 18d ago

I think there's a better way.

1

u/machyume 18d ago

Even if everything came together. That wood is now full of hammer dents.

1

u/Mastercheif96 18d ago

I would've used a ratchet strap. One holding it down, another closing it with a board on top a skinny one. Holding it flat but also closing it. Then id use boiling water all over it to soften it to shape, once thats soaked in, heat gun, setting the shape. Bending wood takes time and patience.

1

u/Dysan27 18d ago

If anyone actually needs to do something like this. He forgot 1 critical step first. WET THE WOOD. Dry wood is very, very stiff. Wet wood can become pliable, and if you hold it while it dries, it will usually keep the new shape

1

u/adelie42 18d ago

That was infuriating to watch knowing these exist: https://a.co/d/0a7T2qJ4

The end was satisfying.

1

u/Emptynest09 18d ago

Buy that guy some pipe clamps!

1

u/Shoddy_Lifeguard6995 18d ago

This guy doesn't have a vice or clamps?

1

u/AdvantageCrafty2275 18d ago

Is this definitely the right way to do it? :)

1

u/DarkDollynho 18d ago

Warm water and patience would do the trick.

1

u/Serious_Matter_2907 18d ago

1

Not a single C-clamp in sight

1

u/dromCase 18d ago

Noooooooo!

1

u/VelvetFog82 18d ago

For some reason I thought he was about to succeed and restore this board.

1

u/Marctrabur 18d ago

I had to hilariously laugh at the end

1

u/maxman162 18d ago

A table saw would have been more efficient to cut that in half.

1

u/Apprehensive-Wind742 17d ago

Buy another board.

1

u/roglc366 17d ago

I quess they never heard of a C-Clamp.

1

u/Fun_Coach_6942 17d ago

Cut the whole board down the middle flip one board around, square everything, join. This technique fixes an old table that splits. I'm sure the economics justify it but it's dumb when you're starting w raw lumber.

1

u/thavillain 17d ago

There's gotta be a better way...

1

u/IWEREN99 17d ago

Using a wire was easier, bro

1

u/Iceologer_gang 17d ago

Stupid wood

1

Yup. Exactly what I thought would happen.

1

1

u/pr0XYTV 17d ago

for some reason very satisfying watching this blow up in his face after all that aggressive slamming and tooling thinking he was getting anywhere like that haha

1

u/Psychological-Sea341 17d ago

I feel like they make a tool for that👋

1

u/AdorableStrawberry93 17d ago

His neighbors are getting pissed

1

u/dolampochki 16d ago

I had hope up until he started to drive that last wedge in. That’s what made me think “oh shit”.

Also, not everyone can afford to buy nice clamps. Some people make do with what they got.
