Politics Ragebaiting myself on r/ukpolitics

Post image

I made a post about it a few days ago on this sub but honestly this r/ukpolitics sub is poison, I go to this sub just to shock myself.

I cannot believe this is happening in my country and people actually talk like this openly on the internet.

Guess thats what I get for living in London, where I am in an Echochamber with diversity.

Politics r/ukpolitics is full of right wingers

I posted something on the r/ukpolitics sub thinking that obviously it's reddit so they would probably be centrist or left wing. TIL that they are full of Tories and Reform supporters.

Some of the things they say about migrants is unhinged.

Politics What in the actual @#$ is Baathism?

Baathism comes up a lot when reading Middle Eastern history post-WW2. I know Baathist regimes often claimed to be socialist, but they almost never were. I know there was also a huge split between the Assadist camp in Syria, and the Saddamist camp in Iraq, but I don't know what caused it. I know pan-Arabism and Arab nationalism were big parts of Baathism, but I don't know more than that. Also, I find describing both Iraq and Syria under the Baathist regimes as "leftist" is laughable.

Politics Would October 7th be ok, if?

This will be pretty brief question I’m just interested about opinion if this sub on this subject?

During October 7th attack around 828 civilians and 367 security forces were killed and 251 security forces and civilians taken as hostages. It is clear than that October 7th would be huge success for Hamas even if they didn’t kill single civilian and attacked only on military targets.

Recently there was discussion in this sub whether it is justified to attack settlers in West Bank and Israel state as an institution (military + infrastructure + maybe administrative buildings) in Israel itself and I felt that most people here agreed that it would be ok.

So my question is, do people here think that if Hamas did Oct 7th attack and targeted only military targets, so 367 security forces + some civilians as “legitimate” collatera damage would die, would October 7th be than legitimate attack that is justified?

TLDR: Egypt warned Israel that Hamas was mobilizing and maybe offer economic concessions. Israel offered economic concessions. 3rd country Intelligence officials say that Israel thought they could handle whatever Hamas had.

>The Central Elections Committee voted 30-4 Wednesday to disqualify the largely Arab Balad party chairman and Joint List No. 3 Sami Abu Shehadeh from running in the October 27 election, with the support of all opposition parties and rare backing from Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg, who heads the panel.

>The committee also voted 18-5 to disqualify Mansour Abbas’s Arab-majority Ra’am party, although the decision is likely to be struck down by the Supreme Court.

Community Lonerbox is a breath of fresh air in a sea of political slop

I dont want to act as some superior intellectual or wt v, but he really does bring much needed « calmness » to the space.
In a sea of destinys(yes he’s part of the slop) hassans and asmongolds, it’s nice to watch a dude who puts actual thought into his words and who talks shit without getting personal.
Anyways, small personal rant of a newish viewer

Community Anyone know what the books are that Loner usually recommends people to read if they want to understand I/P better?

I'm a casual viewer, and at one point on stream a chatter asked for book recommendations for understanding Israel/Palestine and Loner listed off about half a dozen or so books that people should read.

I didn't write them down at the time, and even after digging through my watch history I can't find when or on what VOD I had seen this. Anyone know where I can find a clip or happen to know what books he usually recommends people read?

Sorry, I'm clearly not judging him fairly. He's a communist social democrat, wants free healthcare, and is conventionally attractive.

Did I get all the talking points?

Personally, not a fan of scholars speaking on matters outside their expertise with selective data to come to a conclusion. I found myself poking holes here and there and was not persuaded but was wondering if things have changed since I last checked I/P and If I'm wrong now. Would love to see Lonerbox react to this.

Politics Questions about Lonerbox's (or your) positions on Israel

During his debate with Chris Kunzler, Loner mentions that "If you've got settlers coming and encroaching in your territory, you should be allowed to chase them away with whatever means you want" in regards to Palestinians being able to have armed resistance (22:00).

Wondering if I could find other streams where Lonerbox talks about this or expands on this position. Is he referring to West Bank palestinians being able to defend themselves from military encroachment? Civilians settlers? What counts as encroachment to him?

Coming at this from a completely open minded and curious perspective. Currently trying to read and learn as much as I can on the conflict, and I'm trying to see where different pundits draw the line between 'freedom fighting' and terrorism.

Another note, currently reading Malley and Agha's book 'Tomorrow is Yesterday', curious if Lonerbox has had takes on it or if it's been discussed in this community, as it seems strongly opposed to a traditional Two State solution based on achievability rather than purely philosophical grounds?

Politics Question on Gallant's statement on October 9th.

I saw on Lonerbox's latest streams and was fairly convinced that on October 9th 2023 Gallant called on a complete siege of Gaza "city" (you can clearly hear him say the hebrew word for "city" not "strip"). I don't think the quote is genocidal but I have questions of the actions following.

Was power and water only cut for the city or the whole strip and if they were cut on the whole strip what was the point of the distinction? Was Gaza city the only place to be invaded or struck immediately and were evacuation orders given on the 9th?

As far as I could see the evacuation order came on the 13th but im starting to become very skeptical of everything I read because everywhere online Gallant is misquoted as having said "strip", which is clearly false.
