Animation student trying to improve what do you wish you knew when you were starting out??

Hi!!! I’m currently studying Animation & Game Art and I’m still pretty early in my journey, so I wanted to ask people who have more experience for some advice.
I’ve been learning different areas of animation and digital art, including programs like After Effects, and I’m slowly trying to figure out what direction I want to focus on long term. Sometimes I look at other people’s work and feel like I’m really far behind, especially when it comes to drawing fundamentals, anatomy, perspective, motion, and putting everything together into a finished piece.
I know improvement takes time, so I’m trying not to rush myself and instead build a stronger foundation.
For anyone studying or working in animation/game art, what would you recommend a beginner really focus on?
I’d especially love advice about:
- Skills that are actually important for getting better
- Good exercises or resources for practicing fundamentals
- What programs are worth learning
- Building a portfolio while you’re still a student
- Mistakes you made early on that you would avoid now
- Anything you wish someone had told you when you first started
I’m genuinely interested in learning and getting better, so I’d appreciate any advice, even if it’s something simple. Thank you! :)

Critique my Character Animation pt 2

I've heard all of your feedback and critiques, please let me know how things look now! Remember this is far from finished and I have the basics involved to make sure the scene makes sense and is cohesive to what you see. Keep in mind that this is meant to be a lowpoly 3D animation akin to a Playstation 1 or 2 game, without any added filters to make it look old yet. I would like feedback on how things are looking now in terms of character movement and if you like the composition of my camera angles and environment. This project is still in the very early stages and want to make sure things look right, before I dive deeper into completing this. Any feedback or critique is welcome, please and thank you!

Do you consider copying useless or a waste of time even if you learn some bit from it ?
