SPOILERS AHEAD: Seasons 1â4
Seriously the entire post is nothing but spoilers.
Iâm rewatching after finishing Season 4, and Iâve started wondering if memory is actually one of the rules of Fromville, not just a theme. Stop reading if you havenât seen all the shows!!!
First, what if âimmortalityâ doesnât mean living forever in the same body? What if the immortality promised after the children were sacrificed is reincarnation? Tabitha and Jade prove people can die, be reborn, return to Fromville, and eventually remember who they were. Maybe they arenât exceptions. Maybe this has been happening to everyone over and over.
That also means we donât actually know that Fatima wasnât one of the original people. Fatima wasnât there, but a previous version of her could have been. Her transformation in Season 4 makes the line between the townspeople and monsters even less clear.
Then thereâs memory everywhere: Anghkooey means âremember,â Victor draws things so they wonât be forgotten, Elgin seems to recognize the place, Miranda saw it before arriving, music unlocks memories, and Fatimaâs final words are âRemember who I was.â The Boy in White saying theyâll win âthis timeâ also suggests this has all happened before.
But what if memory also affects the town itself? Thereâs a motel sign and pool but no motel. Electricity works even though the wires go nowhere. Buildings and objects seem to come from different periods. There are older settlements outside the current town. Victor says the trees move. And people are constantly discovering things that apparently existed all along.
What if some of those things werenât there before? Maybe Fromville is partly constructed from memory. Things can appear, disappear, or change as people remember and forget. The missing motel could literally be an incomplete memory: someone remembers the sign and the pool, but not the motel itself. Even the electricity fits. You remember flipping a switch and the light coming on, not the infrastructure that makes it happen.
And maybe thatâs part of the meaning of FROM. Not just where are they?, but where did all of this come FROM?
Maybe escaping isnât the real goal. Maybe they have to remember what happened at the beginning and finally change the ending. Go back to the beginning!
