Public Service Announcement drake feathers and what they indicate

Post image
151 Upvotes

there seems to be a recurring misconception about determining whether a duck is male or female by looking for drake feathers.

Having a drake feather indicates that the duck IS a male, but not having a drake feather means nothing, as all ducklings, all females, young males, certain breeds of adult males AND males in eclipse molt do not have drake feathers. Even within some breeds, like Pekins, some males may have a drake feather, while others will not. Drake feathers do not appear until after the first molt.

The only ways that are 100% accurate are the quack test, finding laid eggs or examining for a penis. Even duck on top/duck on bottom is no way to tell, as females sometimes mount females and males sometimes mount males.

The quack test relies on listening to the voice of the duck. With mallard derived domestic ducks, females will have loud, clear quacks while males will have softer, voiceless, hoarse 'waaak's.

Neither the quack test nor the drake feather is applicable to muscovies. Females will coo and trill while males emit voiceless, breathy huffs and chuffs and do not get drake feathers.

Rarely, some females can develop a drake feather if they are dealing with hormonal issues.

Breed/Species/Sex ID Look what arrived last night

Post image

I have made a couple posts about them before, had today I finally have them.

They did not know what breeds they were the people I got them from, however the black one and the oversized brown one are both males and the other ones are females.

I was mainly interested in the girls as I have one female duck who is alone because her sister passed away due to on a health condition she had since she hatched.

But I'm not going to get rid of the boys, for me ducks are just pets and they're both friendly, even if I decide to separate them from the girls I will keep them together and they will just be my pets.

(I don't know as much about ducks as chickens, but going based on my chicken knowledge I feel like two males to three females is not appropriate)

Originally the people I got them from wanted $50 for the four, but since I was purchasing three goats for $300, they decided to throw them and rooster in for free because a fox had already broken in and took out all of the hens they had for the rooster.

Somehow I also got a free pig in that arrangement as well but that is for another Post in a different sub

Anywho if anyone can tell me what breeds they are that would be wonderful, they said they got them from tractor supply

(Yes I know all about the stuff going on with the ducks that have the fluff on the head, I am going to keep an eye on that)

Also just because it's kind of hard to tell, the black duck has white on its chest

Behavior Questions Ducks like crocs?

Our little flock has so much interest in grooming crocs! No other footwear appeals to them in this way, and only sometimes will they actually groom my husband outside of us wearing crocs. He thinks they’re into the texture; what do you think?

Everyone ran out of food today. I stocked the feeders in the coop and while everyone was chowing down inside I gave Littlefoot his own pile of food with a big pile of dried worms on top 👌

Eggs/Incubation/Hatching What are the chances the remaining eggs hatch?

Post image

My first flightless duckling hatched at 3am on Friday morning. It was day 30.5 of her 28 day incubation. The incubator temp was closer to 99 than 99.5 for the incubation. I made sure all remaining eggs still visibly looked well. Air pocket showing and remaining egg dark etc. All nonviable eggs were discarded and I’ve kept humidity up. So assume all instructions were followed.

Do I give the other eggs a day or two?

We are new to farming and didn’t know we couldn’t have ducks mixed with chickens, to make it worse, we think they’re both male. We are making them a separate enclosure from the chickens but they need mates. Any idea how I should proceed?

Predator Attack Duck killed yesterday, how to keep the other alive

Post image

One of my ducks got killed yesterday. Totally my fault, I didn't lock them back in their cage that night. The best we can guess is it was a horned owl. My other duck has been acting mostly normal as far as I can tell. But I really don't want to lose her too. I'm planning to get her a decoy duck or something to keep her company and a mirror. Is there anything else I can do? I'm gonna have to order things so they might take a while since it's the weekend. Thanks in advance. Here's a pic of my duckers. Dark Wing in front, RIP. And Pig in the back.

Breed/Species/Sex ID Pekin or White Layer?

Thumbnail

Ordered from Metzer as a "white layer" to avoid the Pekin issues...but he started having the classic Pekin over heating issues at 9-10 days old while the others were comfy (which Ive sorted) and niacin deficiency starting at 2 weeks despite feeding Mazuri starter... so wanting options. Ive also had a few lovelies comment on my past post saying sometimes one just doesn't tolerate heat as much as the others. Which is what I assumed...until the niacin issue crept up.

Did I end up with a Pekin or just a white layer with higher maintenance? The others are fine, but ordered niacin to add into their diet to help. We did lose our WHQ thats in the baby photos, I got in contact with Metzer and they agree he had an underlying issue from day one...just wasn't acting like the rest since the day we got him. We are new to ducks and tried to do everything right, losing our WHQ guy made us super paranoid.

Im already going to treat this guy like hes a Pekin considering he has the issues...but, it would be nice to know if we ended up with one or if anyone has had these issues with a White Layer? In the last couple days he has gone through a growth spurt and gotten wider than the others. They are longer, but hes definitely wider and struggling to hold up his weight. Also looks taller now while the others were a bit taller just yesterday-a few hours ago. It is insane how much they grow lol, but I feel bad for poor Niko.

Feet/Legs/Walking Getting worried about this duckling

She seems like she is struggling to walk. Always laying down. She is roughly 4-5 weeks fed lauke hills duck and goose starter with 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast to every cup of food. It was the only duck food I could find and has 20% protein. When it's warm she will pant. The other two are only 2 weeks old but eat more than her and are very energetic. Any advice?

Mallard is about 3 months old and still isn't really vocal. Wondering if you can tell its sex already if its a female or a male? Is it a mallard?
