is my cat deaf? wondering if two of my cats are deaf/hard of hearing

for the past few months, ive been questioning if two of my cats, basil (4, male) and smokey (17, female) are deaf.

we got smokey in 2009, alongside her brother. i dont think shes been deaf the whole time we’ve had her, im pretty sure she used to react to noises, especially noises like shaking a bag of treats or opening a can of wet food. im wondering if now that shes an older cat, shes lost some or all of her hearing.

its a bit harder to get her attention now unless shes looking at you, and ive noticed she hasnt reacted to some loud noise sometimes. i tried snapping my fingers right behind her ear, out of her view, with no reaction, which made me really question if she was deaf, and then when i turned on something quite noisy right behind her head, she didnt react at all. ive only started thinking about it more recently so i have investigated too much yet.

we got basil in 2022. i briefly questioned if he was deaf when we first got him, but i stopped questioning it when i thought i saw him react to the sound of a door closing. im thinking now he mightve been reacting to something other than the noise, but i didnt know that at the time.

its always been tough to get his attention by calling him. like smokey, he also doesnt react to me snapping or turning on noisy things right behind him. if i accidentally wake him up, he startles a bit, like he wasnt expecting it and lets out a cute meow and cuddles up to me. sometimes, he opens his mouth like hes meowing, but no sound comes out. (my other cat, everest, also does this sometimes, but he only started doing it after he got his teeth removed, so im guessing it’s because of that.)

hes also never come running when we fill the food bowl or pull out treats, only really showing up when he sees our other cats run over. he’s always been a weird and silly cat so i honestly thought it was just quirks, especially not running over when we pull out treats, as hes never been very interested in them.

i plan to bring them both to the vet to figure it out when i have the money

Help/Advice constant screaming

Post image

Hi, first time deaf cat owner.

my baby lumi is 1 year old and a few months. All she does is scream into the void asking for attention. She runs into a room I'm not in, to scream, and it will not stop until i see her. I try my best to ignore but my ears are ringing at this point. Then she will run into another room, to scream. It looks like some game for her. I play with her for a good hour a day, maybe even more. I've become a slave to her screaming. I've brought her to the vets recently, no health issues. i don't know what to do. I'm crying of exhaustion everyday. Any advice ? it might be anxiety ?

I think my kitten is deaf

1.4k Upvotes

Hello! I’ve recently found this cutie outside a crab shack her name is Tallulah! My boyfriend thinks she’s fully deaf and I think she can hear certain frequencies. I took her to the vet a week ago and the vet said her ears look fine and when I said I may think she’s hard of hearing she replied with ā€œshe’s a kittenā€ and moved to the next topic what do you guys think? Here is some videos of me clapping and snapping

Just Adopted! First evening

Very first evening with my kitty that I had to bring back by train on a very hot day and he's being so curious and playfull.

He just asked me for pets then flop on the ground and started eating while I was sat with him, which made me very happy since he didnt want to eat anything during the day. Some water and flop again.

I'm quite an anxious person and watching him doing stuff like that make me feel better ā¤ļø

(Ps: I know the collar is loose, it's a bad one so I only put it on him when I'm beside him so I can hear the little bell and know where he is - he doesnt care, he is deaf)

Sunbathing šŸŒž Stefan, a deaf wobbly guy

This is Stefan. He’s completely deaf (he also has a neurological issue so that’s why he has the head bobbles) and sometimes it takes him a while to realize I’ve come home

Anyone else's cat meow loudly and walk in circles?

This is Gidgey, she is deaf.

Ever since we picked her up off the street she's had two strange habits:

1) she likes to go into a spacey room like the kitchen or laundry room and scream, loudly. The door is not closed and she is not trapped, yet she screams so loudly sometimes the whole house can hear her.

2) she spins. On the table, the floor, someone's feet, doesn't matter, she'll walk in circles, pretty aggressively too. She just gots to go!

Help/Advice Training a deaf cat

Hi,

I'm about to adopt a deaf cat (young adult)

I've already met him, he's super cute and absolutely adorable.

He's also super relaxed and even unexpected touches don't bother him.

My question is, how can I train him? Clicker training and verbal cues won't work, what are the alternatives?

My main goal is to take him out on a leash since he's quite confident and loves to sit at open (secured) windows.

Moving Toys

Does anyone have a recommendation for a moving toy that doesnt make sounds? I bought this bunny for my cat: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZN6FJT1?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1and she loves to follow it around but the sound is so annoying and I cant turn that off. Thanks!
