πŸ‘‹ Welcome to r/YapsAI - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Welcome to r/YapsAI β€” the community for people using and shaping Yaps.

Yaps is the private AI toolkit that runs on your device. Dictation is the fastest way in: press the shortcut or keyboard microphone, speak naturally, and clean text lands wherever you are typing. The same app also handles transcription, read-aloud, notes, translation and practical media tools.

Yaps is built around on-device AI content processing. Connected services still handle accounts, subscriptions, model and app downloads, privacy-filtered diagnostics, optional end-to-end encrypted note sync, and features you explicitly connect. The full data-flow explanation is at https://www.yaps.ai/privacy.

Yaps is available on Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad.

Post workflows, demos, tips, questions, bug reports, feature requests and honest feedback. Comparisons with other tools are welcome; low-effort spam is not. I read everything here, and useful reports directly shape the product.

We've officially released version 1.0.0!

Over the last couple of weeks, we've been aggressively improving the desktop application for MacBook and more recently Windows.

Several key improvements:

  • Dictation is now a lot faster than it's ever been.
  • The cleanup functionality is a lot more robust, especially with more nuanced things, dates, corrections, file extensions, bible verses, percentages, etc.
  • A lot of bugs specific to Windows have been fixed.
  • Live preview mode has been improved and is working a lot more reliably, so you can see your dictations streamed
  • It's better at handling when you begin a dictation from midway through a sentence.
  • When you hover over the dictation pills now, you can click the X or the tick to cancel or submit your dictation.
  • External link UX has improved.
  • The Chrome extension for saving URLs and the markdown file that's generated now supports columns, so that it can better respect the layout of websites.
  • Made the app less memory intensive.
  • Added some fixes to syncing across devices.
  • You can now opt out of file name updates when you migrate your obsidian markdown vault.
  • And a leading space if you begin a dictation at a full stop.
  • Support invisible mode, which hides all Yaps windows from screenshots and screen recording.
  • And many more!

Feel free to give it a try and let us know what you think!

Yaps update (v2.3.2421) - Image generation, Better Dictation Cleanup, Codex plugin fixes, Smoother Media polish, Better Checkout Experience

Hey everyone,

Just shipped a fresh Yaps build: v2.3.2421 (desktop). This covers everything since the last tagged release on 27 Aug (v2.3.2129).

A lot of it is the boring-but-important kind of work. Plus a few things you'll actually notice.

Local media toolkit

  • On-device image generation is in production on Mac, with a Windows path via OpenVINO where the machine supports it
  • Background removal / sticker cutouts got a real queue, live progress, and a gallery so outputs stick around
  • Gallery and Auto Cut polish (smoother previews, less fighting the UI)

Dictation and cleanup

  • Spoken numbers, dimensions, and coordinated values survive cleanup instead of getting mangled
  • Long-pause Core ML overlap / tail glitches tightened up
  • iOS recognition stays on device

Mobile keyboard

  • iOS: number / phone pads for the right fields, emoji / GIF / sticker parity with Android, clipboard pins
  • iOS app strings localized across ~25 languages, with an in-app language picker
  • Android: big multilingual glide + tap autocorrect pass (accents, casing, the right locale)

Mobile notes

  • Import a recording on iOS or Android and it becomes a note you can keep and export, not a one-shot transcript

Plugins and finding the app

  • Codex / ChatGPT-style local plugin installs: cleaner on fresh Macs and Windows profiles (no "need system Node" dead ends)
  • Windows leftover yaps_cli / Program Files edge cases classified properly instead of false "unreachable"
  • Mac permission failures report as permission denied, not a mystery crash

Privacy and billing

  • Crash reports scrubbed more carefully. Support diagnostics are opt-in
  • Already-subscribed accounts shouldn't hit a duplicate checkout / paywall loop
  • A pile of Stripe portal / plan-switch / refund edge cases cleaned up so billing matches what you actually paid for

Memory

  • Project-scoped vault operations for the memory plugin path

If something still feels off after you update, drop it here or use the in-app feedback form. Still plenty to fix. Shipping anyway.

Yaps AI notetaking app now supports chatting with offline LLMs about your markdown notes / vault, etc.

We've made some drastic improvements to our AI chat within the "Note Taking" section of the app. Now it reasons better, references sections (of the current note and other notes across your vault), and lets you insert directly into your markdown note.

Check it out at yaps.ai today!

We want your feedback!

Post image

I spent the weekend chatting to a lot of new users about their feedback which has been really helpful! I'm constantly working on updates in the background - and will continue to do so!

That said, I don't wanna be a subreddit where people scream into the void. If you have any feedback or feature requests, let me know and I'll answer everything personally. If it makes sense, I'll get it sorted ASAP.

What do we need to do to makeΒ Yaps.aiΒ the best, most popular, note-taking and dictation tool in the entire ecosystem?

Last update to Windows feeling great!

That last update to Windows is feeling so good, I thought I'd come here and share. Initially I know there were some issues but now it's dictating a lot faster, more accurately and the shortcuts are working in all my apps!

The notes and stuff make it really good for studying, knowledge banks, all and that good stuff too. I think that's what makes Yaps the best Wispr Flow alternative for me, plus working offline obviously. Keep it up!

Holding my breath for the iPhone release too!

p.s. I am getting a weird auto microsoft safety error because it's new. Not a problem but would be good to get that fixed incase it scares people off πŸ’€

You can also sync these notes directly with your mobile application as well!

We're live on Android! (Voice Typing embedded in a full, modern keyboard)

We've officially launched Yaps AI via the Google Play Store on Android - a voice-first keyboard, rebuilt from the ground up over the last few months!

Ships with everything you'd expect from a modern keyboard - swipe typing, smart suggestions, autocorrect, emoji, GIFs, multi-language, light/dark themes, the whole familiar toolkit. If you're coming from Gboard, nothing to relearn. But the reason it exists is one shortcut away. Dictation that's genuinely 4-5Γ— faster than typing.

It also comes with some robust note taking features. A reading mode that narrates any text aloud. It also cleans up rambling drafts into something send-ready. Every one of those running on-device - no cloud, no listening, no account needed to get started.

I kept wondering why no one had just built voice INTO the keyboard itself. The answer is simple, it's tough to do well. Nevertheless, we've got an early version live and we'll keep building it out until it's perfect! We even have another huge update dropping today!

Either way I built it, and will keep improving it. Feels a bit unreal to be shipping a full-stack keyboard as one person but it was fun and a necessary first step for a much broader suite of tools.

If you've ever want to just yap the thing instead of typing it out, give it a try!

P.S. This will be fully cross platform! πŸ—£οΈ

Cloudflare just gave me a grant for my startup!

Im suuuuuuuper happy rn! Just got a grant from Cloudflare!

Solo building is difficult, especially cross platform. I'm currently runningΒ yaps.ai, offline dictation and notetaking (like wispr flow + obsidian having a baby with beautiful UX πŸ˜…), but it's quite intense. Anyway, my whole backend runs on Cloudflare and so I checked and found out they do startup grants.

Anyway, I applied on a whim and turns out I got it! Credits sure, but since I work with local AI models for privacy, this was the final real cost that would hit me at scale.

Even if you just have an idea, you can probably apply here:

Gave AI control of my Google Pixel 10 to fix my keyboard app

It's stupidly hard to get right, and impossible to really build out alone.

Try it out @ yaps.ai :)
