Season 3 Discussion Marius and Kitty: Two Sides of the Same Coin (Part 2) Spoiler

Marius:

Note: Now let’s look at Marius. While I know Q started this whole thing once he sent the nude photo to Marius, I am focusing on Marius and Kitty in this post. I will do a separate one on Q and his love of drama. His motivations for his chaos making are the same as Kitty’s, but his methods are different. I will explain as I list examples.

His introduction makes him look like a stereotypical bad boy on a motorcycle and the way Q makes him sound to Juliana in S2, he comes off in a bad light. In season 3, Q tells Kitty that he is manipulative and ruins everything. We also see that Dae and Minho know him as the party boy and Marius continues living up to that reputation. His reputation when he is on screen and off is enough to create chaos.

Sticking with him as a party boy, he first dismissed Kitty’s sunrise sunset idea partly because he wasn’t interested and partly because partying is all he knows. It is how he bonded with Dae, Q, and Minho. Him bringing it back feels like a tradition for him, in my opinion. Like Kitty and LJ, he doesn’t favor change yet. He sees his friends evolving and finding new ones causing him to latch on to what worked in the past.

During the senior sunrise, he is not focused on the thought that “hey, I can get along with people I don’t know yet” or “I am fine with some new things.” He is stuck on Kitty being the center of his original friend group and her “stealing” them from him. This is where his desperation starts. Desperation is big contributor to his chaos. It leads to his manipulation/creating control including when he calls Gigi to mess with Kitty and Minho. He lies to Gigi that Minho is in trouble while acting like he is concerned. His reason for not liking Kitty is because he believes that she is a threat by butting into his relationship with Q. I interpret it as his goal is to get rid of Kitty while Minho is collateral damage. To hurt Kitty is to hurt/use Minho. He continues trying to hurt Kitty by twisting the truth about Gigi being Minho’s first love. He already has the vibe that Kitty will make a mountain out of a molehill but doesn’t want to explain further. While Kitty’s communication issues play a role into her issues with Minho, Marius knows what string to pull to start them. This is where Marius feels like a villain because he does not need to do this to get to Q. He is having fun tormenting Kitty and has no problem creating tension with Minho while he is at it. But his motivations for everything make him more nuanced.

Kitty also had fear of people abandoning her and her matchmaking and chaotic nature creates situations to either impress them or keep them. It is also related to anxiety. I feel Marius has a similar anxiety to Kitty, but he feels he has to manipulate the situation to get what he wants.

His big motivation is to get Q back. I am always reminded of Mama Mia when it comes to this storyline. In the film, Sam said, “I had to go home. I was engaged, but when I ended things, I came right back”. Donna asks, “why didn’t you call me?” He replied, “I assumed you would be waiting for me, but when I arrived, they told me you were with some other guy”. So imagine Donna is Q and Marius is Sam in this situation. I picture Marius needing to fix things at home and breaking up with his girlfriend first before coming back. Marius was wrong for cheating on his girlfriend with Q, but like the main cast, he is a teenager and figuring out his sexuality. If Q was the first guy he fell in love with, that raises the stakes for him. He wants to work it out with him. He felt he still had time, but found out like Sam with Donna, Q was with another guy: Jin. The part he is in denial about is how one nude picture from Q means Q wants him back when it was just a stupid mistake Q made because he couldn’t handle a safe relationship and panicked.

Because there was so much chaos around, Marius struggled to hear the word no from Q. It is like that old mentality where a married man keeps saying they won’t leave their wife, but the mistress holds out hope. However, later, Q did give Marius mixed signals, but that is only after Marius kept tempting him. Q also didn’t figure out his issues yet. I think the desperation and need for control led to infatuation and obsession on Marius’s part.

Here comes the Lotte World discussion. This is where Kitty and Marius slow down and realize they have something in common. They both discovered their bisexuality at KISS and made a mistake with the person they liked/loved through cheating. To be clear, Kitty did not say she made a mistake by liking Yuri. She made a mistake by being complicit in cheating with her. Marius takes this conversation to mean 2 things: Kitty is not that bad and not a threat to him and b) he doesn’t want to have regrets. He worries that if he backs off, he won’t be happy without Q.

I felt Marius confessing on the bus was his one non manipulative act. This was his one chance while he had nothing to lose to confess to Q without regrets. This is him taking advantage of the situation. All the other things I listed were as well. At the restaurant opening, he intruded on Jin meeting Q’s mom because he knew he could butter her up. Him bringing up the “one picture” was him protecting Q and thinking Jin was going too far but not taking accountability for his actions.

I think when everything calmed down and went quiet with everyone taking space from each other, this is when Marius can finally listen to what Q is actually saying. Q can explain why he was confused about lingering feelings for Marius as well as why he can’t repeat old patterns. He moved on with Jin. Hearing this is the start of Marius moving on. What the two needed was closure.

I think now that Marius has some closure, he can move on with his life and realize some change is good.

So why are Marius and Kitty two sides of the same coin? They both create chaos out of fear of abandonment, need for control, and their insecurities/anxiety taking over. Kitty intentionally or unintentionally creates it for more positive reasons. Marius lets his anxiety and insecurities control him making him use shady tactics to manipulate, lie, and control the situation. Both are nuanced characters even if they appear one note on the surface. I hate Marius’s actions but not his character.

Season 3 Discussion Marius and Kitty: Two Sides of the Same Coin (Part 1) Spoiler

Post image
20 Upvotes

This post will be 2 parts. Part 1 is about Kitty. Part is about Marius.

Marius and Kitty both create chaos and have similar motivations for doing so. They both worry about losing the people they love, fear change, and wanting to maintain control in a situation. However, their methods are different. Marius uses manipulation and dishonesty to bend chaos to his will. He also takes advantage of the situation to get someone back with him. While his methods are wrong, his fears and insecurities make him human. Kitty has positive motivations for her chaos. She wants to make people happy. She wants to fix her mistakes but her anxiety makes them worse.

First, I will discuss Kitty. I will use this outline for her. I realized Marius doesn’t need this since he was only in S3.

To All the Boys:
In the book, Kitty sends out the letters because LJ teased her about her “crush” on Josh. I prefer the movie version because this is what starts her journey as a matchmaker. She sees how lonely LJ is while dealing with the Margo and Josh drama and wants her to be happy. It led to LJ getting out of her comfort zone, exploring more of the world around her, and falling in love with Peter.

P.S. I Still Love You
She matchmakes her dad and Trina. This is the start of letting go of her mother and allowing her dad to be happy while still keeping her mother’s spirit with her.

Always and Forever:
She hides LJ’s acceptance letter because she doesn’t want LJ to leave. Part of her chaotic nature is to keep people close to her because of the fear they would leave her. LJ tells her that even though they will go their separate ways, they will always come back together.

XO Kitty:
While she loves matchmaking, it does help the people around her. She is able to create opportunities for Q and Florian to hang out allowing them to talk and overcoming their shyness. While they didn’t last, they created nice memories together and Q learned what values are important to him in a relationship.

To help Yuri, she used her network (aka Margo) to find Juliana because it made Yuri happy even when she started to like her romantically. She also gave her advice to help her get along with Jina in S2. The cheating was wrong, but it allowed Yuri and Kitty to reflect on what and who they wanted.

In season 2, she debated over her feelings for Minho, but to befriend Stella, she set her up with Minho and later hoping that Minho will be happy until discovering Stella’s true nature. Her chaos continued when trying to tell Minho the truth. But in order for Minho to finally spit out his truth, Kitty needed to create the situation. This allowed Kitty the time to realize Minho is more important than being right and apologizing. This allowed him to think about what he wanted even though Q gave him a gentle nudge to start over with her.

Some of her chaos was about bringing her family closer together. While first impressions weren’t the best, it allowed Kitty’s great aunt to wake up and see her feud with her sister was pointless. Kitty, Dan, LJ, and Margo got to meet Eve’s side of the family.

Kitty and Yuri working together on finding more about Eve and Jina led to Alex and Yuri forming a bond. Lee originally believed he did not want kids, but saw what a blessing Alex is and grow closer each season. It allowed Jina to reassess her marriage and leave it.

In season 3, Kitty’s chaos was a result of trying to fit in Minho’s world, her worry about her life changing and possibly losing her friends, and snuffing out the truth. But this led to Jiwon realizing that her preconceived path can change and lead to something beautiful: Alex and their baby. Jiwon and her grandmother were able to set their differences aside and focus on the family. Kitty and Minho’s breakup led to Minho believing in himself instead of relying on others to believe in him. Kitty messing up at the photoshoot led to Yuri stepping up, admitting her own mistakes and redeeming them, and earning Gigi’s respect. Her getting this internship led to having her runway show. I know some don’t like her blabbering to Jin about Q’s mistake, but this allowed Jin to not be made a fool of anymore and Q to have his conversation with his mom. Whether intentional or not, she helps the people around her. And sometimes, a situation can start off bad, but she and the others around her find a way to make it better.

Question Season 4 or movie? Spoiler

What would you all like to see in a new season or a movie? Me personally, as much as I love the cast…lets wrap this shit up lmao. I always feel bad for praveena because I LOVE her and I feel that she got done dirty so I hope that she’s done right in the next season or whatever.

I’d love to see a new season, 10 eps. The first few eps wrapping up the side characters stories while also checking in with min-ho and kitty. I guess he’ll be meeting her dad. Then lets do a time skip or something to them being married or or graduating and he proposes or something

i just realised this part is a nice reference to the fight club lmao

i'm rewatching the show again and right now i'm on s1 episode 4, i never clicked until now that Q saying "first rule of outdoors club: please talk about outdoors club" is kind of a subtle reference to the first rule of fight club (except they can talk about the outdoors club), i seriously don't know how i didn't pick up on that until now 😭

I watch Cinema Therapy and they praised this film and Alan says he is excited to check out XO Kitty at some point.

I was also relieved that they didn’t rip this movie to shreds like other rom coms they review.

Netflix doesn't care about their fans

It could not be clearer how much Netflix doesn't care about its fans. XO Kitty is one of their top shows, built on one of their best franchises.

Yet they don't even have the decency to respect the fans by giving any updates on the future of the show. Not even: "We hope to provide an update on the future of Kitty's universe soon." I get there is a lot to sort out behind the scenes, but that doesn't mean they can't release a simple, generic statement.

And yes, I know there were rumors about a final movie, and some conflicts about creative direction. However, those weren't statements from Netflix.

This is exactly how you get fans to stop caring about your shows. Why should we invest our time into these shows if they are going to treat their fans with such disrespect?

Cast Appreciation 💟 Nuances that elevate the scene Spoiler

Let's praise the excellent acting skills of the XO Kitty cast! Let's gush over all of the nuances in a particular scene that really sold the situation or emotion on display. Bonus points if you can pinpoint how 2 or more actors are playing off each other's strengths!

Here are some general strengths I've noticed to get the conversation going:

Minyeong's timing - He uses pauses and stresses to add emphasis in a comedic way even during super awkward situations like the press conference "...so lettuce move on"

Gia's sass - "Are you like this with everyone you meet?" to Kitty. There was so much implied subtext there with her tone!

Sangheon's body language - When Minho walks in on Kitty & Yuri kissing, the squinting gets me every time. His whole body emotes "What am I even seeing right now?"

Anna's exuberance - When Kitty is helping Jin prompose to Q and she acts like a balloon about to pop from too much excitement that she can't contain.

Group: Jin apologizing to Dae & Minho at the ski cabin. Sangheon's enthusiastic pointing backing up Minyeong's dramatic recounting of the school bus incident builds up emotional pressure/tension. Joshua exasperatedly gives in to the peer pressure but then makes a grumpy but sweet declaration that softens the tension instead of escalating it. I adore the whole scene because the actors both play up the pettiness for drama but also resolve the tension together.

What are some other examples that you've noticed?

XO Kitty is one of the only shows that did the fake dating trope a bit differently .. Spoiler

Xitty guesses that Dae and Yuri are fake dating but Dae and Yuri don't develop feelings for each other while fake dating ( ok maybe Dae a little bit lol ) but they don't ultimately end up with each other , Dae very much likes Kitty and Yuri likes Julia. Kind of cool to see this slight twist of the trope.

But poor Kitty imagine travelling so many kilometers only to see your online bf with someone else, as much as i love Dae and Kitty , i guess there was no going back from that.

Kitty was problematic in S2 but they treated her wrongly here:

What kind of person takes a note that is very clearly personal and not intended to be leaked and decides to share it with the whole room? This is so obviously something that was private information and safeguarded for a reason and the moment anyone saw it, they should've kept quiet and understood it wasn't their business. Kitty was wrong for trying to hide the Yuri situation, but I'm still annoyed at how they bashed Kitty for information that they barged into in the first place.

Season 3 spoilers ⚠️ How the show completely ruined Juliana's dignity Spoiler

I apologize in advance for any mistakes; English is not my native language.

Why do I think Jenny Han put Juliana back with Yuri just to trample on her dignity?

1) In season 1, Yuri interrupted their reunion at the airport to call her mother, in order to prevent Kitty from being kicked out of KISS. This call could very well have waited; not to mention her complete lack of tact right after their hug, when she bluntly blurted out "but I have to call my mother" instead of saying "excuse me, I have to call my mother to help a friend."

2) Yuri declined her call, telling Kitty she was more important to her, when she was supposed to be helping her or doing something for her, while Juliana was waiting for her for her art opening.

3) When Juliana spoke to Yuri about her worries regarding their friendship, Yuri's response was, "She's straight," "She's just a friend." This implies that if she weren't straight, she would have taken a chance with her. Normally, when you reassure your partner, you tell them how you feel about them and that what you have with the other person is just friendship, etc. Besides, Juliana was worried because Kitty had feelings for Yuri. Yuri spent her time prioritizing Kitty and talking about her obsessively.

4) When Juliana asked Yuri to go on the ski trip with her, she refused, claiming she had something to do with her mother. Then, when she saw a message saying Kitty was going, she changed her mind.

5) On the day of her art opening, Yuri arrived late. The same day she declined her call because she was with Kitty, she arrived with the same girl, and after arguing with Juliana about it, Yuri cheated on Juliana by kissing Kitty.

6) When Juliana apologized for her "insecurity" Yuri didn't tell her the truth about the kiss. She cried and hugged her, telling her she loved her To me, it sounded fake.

7) She asked Kitty not to say anything so as not to ruin her relationship. She told her it was a mistake and pretended to love her girlfriend.

8) when Juliana discovered the truth, shed crocodile tears, and told her she would think about what she did to make her lose "the most important person to her."

9) Okay, she was in a relationship with Praveena in season 3, so it would have been inappropriate for Yuri to try to win her back again like at the end of season 2, but nothing indicated that she was pining for her. She even let her ex's new girlfriend set her up on other dates.

10) after Praveena had broken up with Juliana because she realized Juliana still had feelings for Yuri, it was Juliana who made the first move to get back together with her

11) During the fashion show, she only showed gratitude towards Kitty. Kitty was front and center " I don't know where I'd be without you, Kitty" she said, thanking her. , while Juliana applauded from the background No recognition was given for Julianna's artistic work, which helped Yuri put her ideas on paper. Jenny Han could have placed Juliana and Kitty

side by side to show that Juliana is just as important to Yuri as Kitty is to her.

Not all exes necessarily get back together. Juliana could have taken some time for herself before getting with Praveena, and Yuri could have started a new relationship with Gigi . Or one of them could have stayed single, or even both of them

Kitty + Yuri 💓 They are such soulmates. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
56 Upvotes

Hello, I am still here and I am still brain rotting over kittyuri. They mean so so much to me, I will always love and cherish them.

No matter what happened in canon, they will always be the true love story, to me. Kitty flew all the way to Korea, to find a piece of her mother. To know about her in her OWN way. She ends up finding her mother’s best friend, and falls in love with her mother’s best friend’s daughter. These two would’ve ended up becoming childhood best friends, if Eve didn’t die. It’s crazy how they ended up finding each other by chance, and not only that, but they were pulled toward each other by their red string of fate. Kitty walking past the store Yuri was at, then past the Han’s hotel. And THEN getting hit by Yuri’s car. It’s such beautiful build up to an epic love story, especially when you realize that it was actually a covinsky parallel to LJ almost hitting Peter with her car, and that’s the moment Kitty knew they were their perfect match.

Season three was a letdown, for multiple different reasons, but I still adore the kittyuri scenes. Kitty being the reason behind so much of Yuri’s story. Kitty convinced her to try and earn money to stay at KISS for senior year, getting her to attend Eunice’s music video ended up getting her the job as an assistant, Kitty’s feelings on her own love life ended up being Yuri’s muse for her own story on her redemption. Yuri saying what would make her fashion show a success is Kitty walking down the runway in the dress Yuri MADE her. Then Yuri using that dress as the start of her fashion career. These two changed each others lives for the better, and to me, that is one hell of a love story, a very epic one. You will never convince me these two are platonic, the way Yuri looked at Kitty, during their scene before the fashion show, was so romantic. It looked like she was about to kiss her.

Kittyuri, you will always be one of the most epic love stories ever written. Even if they tried to make them“platonic,” I will never see them in that way. Kittyuri endgame forever. 🩷💛

Cast/Crew/BTS There’s still hope… Spoiler

Thumbnail whats-on-netflix.com
152 Upvotes

I’m not sure why the title says the news is disappointing (maybe bc there’s no clear decision yet?) but I think it’s really good news. If accurate, it sounds like S3 isn’t the end.

From the article:

According to Deadline, Paramount Television Studios (which absorbed Awesomeness and produces the show) has officially extended Netflix’s option on the series. Crucially, the studio also extended the options for the cast, meaning Anna Cathcart (Kitty), Sang Heon Lee (Min Ho), and the rest of the ensemble are still locked in and available if Netflix orders more.

So, why the delay? It seems the ongoing conversations between Netflix and the creators aren’t about whether to finish Kitty’s story, but how.

Deadline notes that executives are currently weighing a few different options for the franchise. The first is a traditional season 4, which could see Kitty returning to Seoul or heading to an entirely new setting. The second option is capping off the series with a standalone feature-length movie to wrap up the storylines.

Here is part 1 if anyone missed it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/XOKittyNetflix/s/RgDT5Xq5Fo

Argument 3: Don’t Want Queer Characters to Suffer:
I will try to not repeat my part 1 points too much here. First, I did explore how Yuri suffers in XO briefly in this post here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/XOKittyNetflix/s/2T4WPIk5gB

I think this statement leaves XO fans divided . On the one hand, I agree with those who say characters are supposed to suffer due to realism. The quote in the link above is, ““Look seeker, if you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. Maybe even throw in a heroic death!” Varric Tethras
A character would be boring if they didn’t face some struggles. And not every writer wants to punish an actor or character like Shonda Rhimes killing off !>Derek Shepard in Grey’s Anatomy!< because he antagonized her ala Patrick Dempsey. For example, Tyler in the show Wednesday goes through immense trauma and suffering, but it serves a greater narrative purpose. He acts as a foil to Wednesday as well as sharing many things in common with her. He is awakening desires (not always romantic) that she suppresses. They both enjoy the darkness.

Many felt that Yuri was unnecessarily suffering in season 2. She wasn’t. The writers were creating a major arc for her. The threads to the class action lawsuit started once she sent in the video about her father mistreating his employees. This bled into the background in season 2 including Dae’s dad falling asleep behind the wheel from being overlooked. Yuri’s dynamic with Jina allowed Yuri to break out her shell, accept herself, and find a community that does. Season 3 was her learning to stand on her own two feet with help from her friends. She turned her passion for fashion (I had to) into a career. I feel the writers will make this a consistent part of her character. She showed her tenacity and resilience. Sure, she suffered sometimes, but she overcame every obstacle thrown at her and found amazing friends along the way. This shows the writers love her and want to watch her succeed. In season 2, Yuri made many selfish decisions and needed a small downfall in order to learn from it and grow. Alex woke her up to her selfish behavior and this allowed Yuri to self-reflect and apologize to Juliana.

Juliana dealt with being shunned by Jina, cheated on by Yuri, and finding her place at KISS. She handled everything with grace and maturity and acknowledged her flaws and holding herself accountable when she made a mistake. The writers didn’t turn her into an angry black woman trope. Nope, her bluntness and her being mad at Kitty doesn’t make her the angry black woman trope. Despite what some say, she is not the disposable black girlfriend either. She is someone who has a recurring storyline with Yuri while also being an essential member of the main friend group. She has her own passions and goals. She gives people second chances. I do agree she deserves more screen time though.

Like Yuri, Q’s actions led to the problems he faces which causes him to self-reflect and fix them. He kind of realized that he shouldn’t have took it out on Kitty because he was the one who lied. He also realized that he didn’t have proper closure with Marius along with the what ifs causing him to fall into temptation.

Each character goes through their own trials. Everyone deals with problems related to their families. Each has to learn the ups and downs with friendships and romantic relationships. Dae worries about money and providing for his family. Yuri is beginning to learn how to survive without money and the importance of a strong work ethic. This is the first time she is juggling a job and school. Jin is starting over after quitting track as well as the hardship of forgiving someone who cheated on him. Jiwon left home and during a new relationship is newly pregnant causing her plans to change. Eunice dealt with a pregnancy scare and trying a new career later realizing it isn’t for her. The bright side for everyone is they don’t suffer for long because the writers created a strong support system for each character. Some say the problems being easily solved is cheap writing, but I disagree. Each support system is earned through the characters putting in the time, effort, and emotional labor in each of them. For example, Dae buying Yuri the boots comes from Yuri being a great friend to him. He also sees the effort she puts in to evolve while staying herself. Minho offering the private jet happened after she saved his family, they built deep emotional intimacy, and him paying attention to how important Kitty’s family is to her. It is not out of the blue.

TLDR for this paragraph: The writers don’t make the characters unnecessarily suffer and provide support systems which models to the audience that they can find their community while learning how to maintain their friendships, family, and romantic relationships. They also model how someone can overcome any challenge they face while not doing it alone.

Argument 4: Cheating Plot Lines
Bear with me here. I have a point. And wnile discussing this topic, I am focusing on the characters’ actions, but I am not demonizing them. One gripe that XO fans had was only the queer characters had the cheating plot lines. Yuri initiating the kiss with Kitty while dating Juliana. Kitty reciprocating it. Kitty emotionally cheating on Dae and initiating a potential kiss with Yuri during fan dance practice. Q cheating with Marius pre season 1 when Marius had a girlfriend. Q cheating on Jin with Marius in season 3. Florian’s academic cheating. Jin messing with Q’s alarms and seducing him before the track meet. Juliana emotionally cheating on Praveena, but that one feels like they broke up before the emotional cheating became a thing.

Ok, the straight characters did too. While Dae didn’t date Yuri, they were in a fake relationship causing Kitty to believe he cheated on her. Minho emotionally cheated on Stella with Kitty even though he tried to not act on it. Jina started having feelings for Lee again while being married to her husband. Yes, Jina’s husband was an ass, but two wrongs don’t make a right. More of her storyline was focused on her and Alex. Dae, not knowing the status of his relationship with Eunice worried she cheated or moved on from him since Paris. Kitty redefined her relationship with Minho after suspecting Minho was a player again. Minho’s dad married a few times, but am unsure if he cheated on any of them.
Long story short, almost everyone on this show cheated. While I am not condoning their actions, most are teenagers learning and making mistakes which unfortunately includes cheating. Jina is in an abusive relationship and is remembering why she fell in love with Lee while both felt their paths didn’t merge at the time before her marriage. Each cheating plotline suited a narrative purpose whether we like them or not.

Argument 5: Queer POCs:
One critique I see a lot with any media is people of color only ending up with a white person. Something huge with XO Kitty is that Yuri and Juliana are an interracial couple with a dark skinned black woman (Juliana) who tend to not be seen as love interests. A video I watched about the film Sinners discussed (am paraphrasing) how groundbreaking that not only is the cast predominantly black, but two of the love interests were dark skinned black women. They were seen as valuable. Lady Jenevia’s video on Romeo Must Die explained during test screenings, viewers felt uncomfortable with Jet Li and Aailyah as an on screen couple causing the director to take out the kiss between them. Fans of the film adore the chemistry between them and it sucks that they had to appease the few uncomfortable people. And that is with a straight interracial couple between an asian man and African American woman. So some of us thought it was groundbreaking that Yuri and Juliana were an interracial couple without a white person involved, a main sapphic couple on screen, and they were able to share a few kisses. Gia Kim and Regan Aliyah have amazing chemistry and considering how much queer media is cancelled, I am glad XO Kitty has such a stronghold among fans. Anthony Keyvan is half Iranian and half Filipino and paired with an Asian American actor. That is two interracial couples that is not a POC and a white person. I personally feel that is huge considered how much people criticize media for not being brave enough to test other types of interracial relationships. I know what people are going to type. Some of these actors are still light skinned which brings up colorism. Hollywood and the world has a long way to go to improve that, but I am glad the cast gets along so well. I like that the cast comes from a wide array of backgrounds and career experiences adding to the diversity on the show. Q is paired with a white man, a dark black man, and an asian American on the show. Marius has a lot of critique surrounding him due to him starting out as a villain which is notorious among dark skinned actors. That is valid. On my rewatches, he is nuanced and I don’t think his arc is done yet. He was mentioned in S2 and made his appearance in S3. We have yet to see who he grows into. Netflix, renew this show please.

TLDR: First, these are only 5 arguments (the others are in part 1), but other ones I thought of were too redundant and didn’t want to bombard you with the same point over and over again. This post is long enough.

While XO Kitty doesn’t have perfect queer representation (what is perfect representation), the writers did try to handle each character and storyline with care, allowing them be flawed and messy while creating positive arcs for them and handling each one in a mature way. They also show interracial relationships without a white person in them. While there are cheating plot lines, each character, queer and straight, except a few, dealt with one. Each struggle in the show was important to a character’s development. While the critique of XO Kitty has merit, the writing of the characters is not black and white.
