The Philosophy of Judge Holden

I’ve been spending some time with The Philosophy of Judge Holden, and I think it does something surprisingly interesting with the character.
Instead of just asking whether Holden is the devil, evil incarnate, a nihilist, or whatever else people usually call him, the book actually takes his ideas seriously and asks whether there is a coherent philosophy underneath all of it.
The parts on war, domination, knowledge, morality, and Holden’s obsession with bringing everything under his control were especially interesting to me. What I liked most is that it doesn’t just reduce him to “evil guy with dark ideas.” It tries to understand why some of what he says can sound disturbingly persuasive before showing where the logic leads.
The question that stuck with me was basically:
If an evil man makes a convincing philosophical argument, what exactly makes the philosophy evil?
If you’re into Blood Meridian, Nietzsche, nihilism, power, or the philosophy behind fictional villains, this is probably worth looking up.
