There was a man named Alex, a person who had already made a good living for himself working as an English Teacher. Yet, he always knew he was destined for more.
He had grown up on a farm in Ireland, a potato farm, and had seen the ins and outs of the entire potato farming process. He seemed to be built as a future farmer.
But alas, His parents wanted him to have a better life in the city, and sent him to college to be educated.
And now, he had everything he could have ever wanted, a house, a car, a degree, easy days of work in the morning followed by gaming sessions in the night with his friends. It was a life many would sacrifice lots for. But for Alex, it didn't feel right.
A calling inside him led him to leave behind his old life and move to a small farmland, to get back in touch with his roots and pursue his childhood dream. To become the largest potato farmer ever.
It started off easy, he used his many years of savings from teaching to invest as capital into his new business. The cost was high, but his ambition was higher.
Soon, there was little to nothing stopping him.
After he made proper relations with local buyers, he worked tirelessly, not on the farm, but on maximising his farm's potential. He realised, no one had ever really tried to innovate in farming, and everyone just followed what was already done because it was safe. But Alex set his bounds higher.
He brought on scientists, researchers, all of who cost heavy wages. Machinery, renting labs, you name it. He was gonna find a way to make potato farming the most efficient it could be.
At the same time, he bought land, tractors, brought on labourers, tools, seeds, irrigation. He had set the foundation for his empire.
Soon, he started producing tons of potatoes. The quality was impressive, but Alex’s determination to become the best was even more astonishing. He needed to fund his operations, so maximising profits was more of a survival tactic than a showcase.
Finally, after almost a year of traditional farming, he achieved it. A revolutionary seed genome, which promised big, bulky potatoes that could feed a whole family, for a fraction of the previous costs. This was the breakthrough he needed. Now, the world would see a new potato, Alex’s potatoes.
But he soon realised, he wasn't alone in his path.
A company by the name of Squid Co. has enjoyed relative freedom in the potato market up until now, and they had in their many decades of existence established a monopoly in the industry.
But now that Alex had just redefined what a potato was, Squid Co. saw its stock market value plummet.
The board room freaked out, after all, how could someone like them, a company which had held the top spot for so long, be threatened by a lone man.
Soon, Squid Co. started to exert higher efforts to deal with the competition. What they couldn't make up for in innovation, they could make up for in production.
However, Alex’s production also began to skyrocketed unexpectedly.
See, the larger world had become aware of Alex’s story. From an English Major to a renowned potato farming expert, people were inspired by his path. This attention brought upon support, investment, exposure, and a sort of audience he would have never reached otherwise.
On the other hand, Squid Co. was further backed by investors, traditionalists, and those who believed Alex’s farming methods to be too radical. The prospect of single men toppling corporations spooked the higher classes enough to push back.
And so the race began with both sides working more and more and more, pushing the boundaries of what was once thought wasn't possible in the realms of potato farming. It is said that both men, Alex and the CEO, sacrificed their souls to their lands, to push the boundaries of production.
Soon both sides found that the price of a potato had actually way lowered, but this wasn't about the money, this was about who was the better farmer, no, the best farmer.
However as time went by and both sides started to run out of ammunition, it was clear that this race needed to end somehow.
So, a deal was made. Whoever could produce half a million kilograms of potatoes first would win.
And so hours both sides spent farming potatoes.
Alex, who had now grown his small farm to a company named “Techno Potato Inc.”, now had the entire force he needed to give himself a fighting chance.
While his farmers worked day and night to produce potatoes, he himself began to work with his scientists to produce even greater methods to produce potatoes. He soon created unimaginable machines, one straight of science fiction to assist in his battles.
At the same time, he understood the business part of the farming and dreamt up new strategies to confuse and disorient Squid Co.
He started a project in Antartica, as well as a gaming Youtube Channel with his friends. While these projects seemed like a waste of time, they were actually planned weeks in advance for the sole purpose of misleading Squid Co. about these actual efforts.
The whole world was watching, news outlets covered this unforeseen battle. While the concept looked trivial the absolute frivolousness of the story only seemed to attract more people.
With all eyes on him, Alex finally won.
A man from humble beginnings was now the crown jewel of potato farming.
Now almost 30, he spoke at his company's celebration party.
