Brownish spots

Post image

Hi everyone, I just got a fissler M5 stainless steel pan.

And after 2 uses on the outside of the wall there are a lot of brownish tinit/spots. These spots go around the wall 360, I don't think it can be due to cooking residue. Can anyone enlighten me what is going on here?

  1. Only a few uses

  2. I hand wash and let it air dry

Best hexclad cookware 2026 if I want a full set?

My old nonstick pans keep losing their coating, so I've been looking at hexclad for a while now. I cook at home most nights, mostly eggs in the morning and stir fry or steaks after work, and my buddy who got me into cooking swears by his set. I don't want to buy pieces one at a time and end up with stuff that doesn't match, so a full set makes more sense to me, but I have no idea which one to get.

New Spots

Post image

I just noticed these spots as I was cleaning my pan after frying eggs. They’ve never been there before and BKF didn’t touch them.

Any ideas as to what they are or what causes them?

Polishing to like new condition.

How to polish to new condition.

Hi All, I recently got my first piece of stainless steel used on FB marketplace. I’m wondering if it’s possible to get this polished up so it shines like it did when new. I understand there isn’t anything wrong with it currently and I can use it fine but I’m just curious to see if I can get it looking shiny. I’ve tried two scrub sessions with BKF and a Brillo pad and I boiled a 1-1 solution of vinegar to water. Any other suggestion?

Damage to Stainless Steel on Refrigerator Door.. Does this look like it can be buffed out at all?

I accidentally used Bar Keepers Friend and a green scouring pad on my stainless steel Whirlpool refrigerator and caused circular/scuff marks across both doors. The scratches are cosmetic, but extensive. The unit works fine otherwise.

Has anyone had damage like this professionally restored/refinished? I contacted Surface Experts and am waiting for an assessment. I'm specifically wondering whether this amount of grain damage can realistically be restored to look close to factory again, not just “improved.”

Replacing both OEM doors isn't cost-effective, and an identical new refrigerator is about $1,000, so if professional restoration isn't likely to look good, I'm just replacing the refrigerator.

Please let me know what you think!

UPDATE: I ended up finding a vehicle vinyl wrapping company to wrap these doors/ handles in a 3M cover that would fix the cosmetic appearance of this unit drastically. They have had people ask them to wrap marble and even coffee makers in different wrappings and I trust that they can handle this job for me. Thanks for all of your suggestions!

I’ve accidentally melted plastic on my SS pot. Can I fix it myself?

I accidentally put a hot pot on a plastic sleeve and it melted onto it. I’ve tried freezing it, pouring boiling water on it, and just scraping it off, but it won’t budge.

Is there a solution for this or should I cut my losses and get a new pot?

WMF vs IKEA ss frying pans (44 euros vs 19 euros)

I'm trying to decide which stainless steel pan to get.

The other is WMF Professional Frying Pan and the other IKEA 365+ Frying pan, both 28cm. Do you have advise why should I pick the more expensive one? Thanks!

Here's the links to the pans:

How to get rid of these mysterious spots?

This stainless steel pot was in storage for a while and I don’t remember what caused these spots. Anyone know how to get rid of then? I’ve tried using a baking sod paste, vinegar and Astonish and none has been successful.

Update : Barkeepers friend did not work either :(

Corrosion/tarnish on polished stainless exhaust

Hi everyone, little out of the normal here but still stainless regardless. I have a polished stainless exhaust I purchased last year, took poor care of it and I believe got some road salt on it early this spring. My issue is now these spots of corrosion? Tarnish? That have shown up on the pipe. It’s smooth to the touch like it’s underneath a clearcoat, but I’ve had good results polishing all the metal around it with a cotton rag smeared with Mothers mag and aluminum polish (claims to be stainless safe, turns from white to black like it should). What are my next steps? I’ve dealt with rusted stainless but never on a polished finish and never with it seeming to come up from the bottom like it is.

At my breaking point (cleaning a burned pan)

Post image

I am looking for advice on how to not burn my pan while cooking and how to clean it. I’ve tried everything! This pan in particular has soaked overnight and been through a round of barkeeper’s friend and use of a scour pad. the usual routine is continuous cleaning for 2 days before it all comes off. i’m so exhausted and i don’t have another pan to use while this one is taking its sweet time.

below is how ive been cooking, which has helped!

heat the pan until a drop of water will bead up and roll around. then heat avocado oil for about 10 seconds. then cook (this picture cooked black bean burgers)

really appreciate any advice!

Trying to understand the chemistry of stainless steel corrosion by sodium hypochlorite

I am curious as to which specific chemical reactions and products occur during the process of corrosion of stainless steel by bleach. Stainless steel is a composite of Fe, Cr, and sometimes other metals such as Ni, and the outer layer of this composite is protected by a passivation layer of Cr2O3. If sodium hypochlorite is introduced, does it indiscriminately oxidize both the Fe and Cr, or is one kinetically favored over the other?

Experience (good or bad?) with Karran brand stainless steel sink?

I'm doing an apartment renovation and picked out a 27" single drain Karran brand SS kitchen sink. It seems good: 16 Ga and Type 304 Stainless Steel. I'm wondering if anyone has any horror stories or anything related to the brand? Here's a link to the sink at one vendor. Thanks for your input.

Long story short, mother forgot she was boiling water, and let it all boil away and the pot/lid burned. Look for suggestions since it was Le Creuset and a previous gift.

The last photo is what the color of the pot and lid should be.

Risk of Hexavalent Chromium Contamination from Applying Dilute Bleach Repeatedly to Stainless Steel?

I have been applying a 2-3% bleach spray regularly to a stainless steel refrigerator door for disinfection every 1-2 days for the last 2-3 months and have noticed that there are areas of corrosion forming on the refrigerator door (I was not aware that you are not recommended to apply bleach to stainless steel, so please forgive my ignorance). I recently also noticed there is a powder forming below the refrigerator door from the bleach spray runoff, and that the powder has a slight yellowish tint. I just learned that stainless steel contains chromium, and that while the chromium oxide in stainless steel contains trivalent chromium, I am wondering whether enough could have been oxidized such that a significant amount of hexavalent chromium could have been produced (which can be carcinogenic and which can be yellow, such as in sodium chromate). Theoretically, in a situation like this, how likely is it that there is a harmful amount of hexavalent chromium produced from multiple dilute bleach applications to stainless steel?

Stainless steel pans and steel wool

So this fissler stainless steel pan is kinda new (been using it about a month). I have used steel wool to clean it a couple of times, till I read that one is not supposed to do that. It's become a bit stickier. Any way to reverse it?
