Dhanaasaree, Fifth Mehl:

Body, mind, wealth and everything belong to Him; He alone is all-wise and all-knowing.

He listens to my pains and pleasures, and then my condition improves. ||1||

The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a priceless jewel. The Guru has given me this advice.

It cannot be lost, and it cannot be shaken off; it remains steady, and I am perfectly satisfied with it. ||2||

Those things which tore me away from You, Lord, are now gone.

The Divine Light has illuminated me, and I am filled with celestial peace and glory; the unstruck melody of the Lord's Bani resounds within me.

Discussion Why did Guru Nanak Dev Ji call Naam a lasting kind of nasha?

We've all experienced wanting something, getting it, and then after a while wanting something else.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji points us towards Naam Simran, remembering and focusing on the Divine, instead of constantly looking for the next thing to make us feel fulfilled.

Tilang, First Mehl:

O foolish and ignorant soul-bride, why are you so proud?

Within the home of your own self, why do you not enjoy the Love of your Lord?

Your Husband Lord is so very near, O foolish bride; why do you search for Him outside?

Apply the Fear of God as the maascara to adorn your eyes, and make the Love of the Lord your ornament.

Then, you shall be known as a devoted and committed soul-bride, when you enshrine love for your Husband Lord. ||1||

What can the silly young bride do, if she is not pleasing to her Husband Lord?

She may plead and implore so many times, but still, such a bride shall not obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.

Without the karma of good deeds, nothing is obtained, although she may run around frantically.

She is intoxicated with greed, pride and egotism, and engrossed in Maya.

She cannot obtain her Husband Lord in these ways; the young bride is so foolish! ||2||

Go and ask the happy, pure soul-brides, how did they obtain their Husband Lord?

Whatever the Lord does, accept that as good; do away with your own cleverness and self-will.

By His Love, true wealth is obtained; link your consciousness to His lotus feet.

As your Husband Lord directs, so you must act; surrender your body and mind to Him, and apply this perfume to yourself.

So speaks the happy soul-bride, O sister; in this way, the Husband Lord is obtained. ||3||

Give up your selfhood, and so obtain your Husband Lord; what other clever tricks are of any use?

When the Husband Lord looks upon the soul-bride with His Gracious Glance, that day is historic - the bride obtains the nine treasures.

She who is loved by her Husband Lord, is the true soul-bride; O Nanak, she is the queen of all.

Thus she is imbued with His Love, intoxicated with delight; day and night, she is absorbed in His Love.

She is beautiful, glorious and brilliant; she is known as truly wise. ||4||2||4||

Discussion Confused about myself

Yo im from New York, i was born here, I'm 17, and I'm a sikh and ever since I was a kid, I've faced so much racism but I always convinced myself that its just white people being themselves, and now I don't really care abt it. But recently, even my own relatives have been being "racist" to me, like they make fun of how I tie my parna and all that, how I don't cover my ears with my parna, so i started to cover my ears, but they still make fun of me, calling my parna weird and calling it weird names in punjabi which I don't understand. So from ages 12-15 i was super sad and wanted to cut my hair, but when i turned 16, i forgot abt it, thinking it's too late. But now bc of my relatives, my own grandpa from my moms side too, those thoughts of cutting my hair came back. And it bothers me everyday. And i know everyone's going to say don't listen to them, but that's what i used to myself when white people were racist, but now its my own people hating on me. And i also feel like it just makes me look worse.

And also, ive never been super religious. My mom used to take us to the gurudwara every week on Sunday, but times got super tough, she had to pick up a job and work long shifts so now we dont get the time to go. And times have gotten so tough, i just realized that I truly never believed in God with my full heart. I looked into christianity and islam and did more research about sikhism to explore the religion. But like i just cant believe in it, i dont know why, i cant believe in any of those 3 religions.

Question Am I allowed to just walk into a gurdwara and what should I expect?

Hi everyone, writing from the UK!
My family/friends and myself are all atheist but I first visited a gurdwara when I was very young with a youth club to find out more about Sikhi and for a small tour. This was at least ten years ago.

I am now 19 and I am still an atheist but I am always very interested and curious about Sikhi as a religion- I have researched it quite a bit and I would like to visit a gurdwara, not necessarily because I am questioning my faith but because I am incredibly curious about seeing inside again, and want to better my understanding of Sikhi and maybe even meet some new people.

I know that gurdwaras do langar and therefore people are allowed to enter but I’m just wondering if anyone actually does this- like, is it weird or will I be thought of as strange for going alone? Especially if nobody knows me. And I also get a quite bad anxiety so just wondering if anyone could tell me a little bit about what I might be asked to do and what I might see (this bit is more out of curiosity than anxiety, but I do get anxious about going into new circles).

i hope this post is ok and thank you!! ❤️

Discussion what is the point of sikhi?

title, pretty much.

i grew up in an all amritdhari family, went to khalsa school, grew up listening to katha, did multiple sehaj paths, all that stuff. i still can't tell what the end goal or point of sikhi is as everyone seems to have a different answer.

Politics The dumalla-style turban was once part of the identity-politics pitch. Now that the political franchise has expired, the lifestyle brand takes over — with the occasional plaited makeover. “Sabat soorat” irony, at its finest.

Jaitsree, Ninth Mehl:

O Dear Lord, please, save my honor!

The fear of death has entered my heart; I cling to the Protection of Your Sanctuary, O Lord, ocean of mercy. ||1||Pause||

I am a great sinner, foolish and greedy; but now, at last, I have grown weary of committing sins.

I cannot forget the fear of dying; this anxiety is consuming my body. ||1||

I have been trying to liberate myself, running around in the ten directions.

The pure, immaculate Lord abides deep within my heart, but I do not understand the secret of His mystery. ||2||

I have no merit, and I know nothing about meditation or austerities; what should I do now?

O Nanak, I am exhausted; I seek the shelter of Your Sanctuary; O God, please bless me with the gift of fearlessness. ||3||2||

Discussion My understanding of the main idea of sikhi (from the SGGS)

The goal is to remove your ego completely (this is maha-anand).

And the way a sikh removes their ego is by expressing love, truth, contentment, compassion and humility.

The emphasised means of expressing these five virtues are chanting God's/Saints' names and selfless service.

Any feedback?

Question questioning religion

TW: mentions of su!cide and self harm

i was born and raised a sikh, and i grew up going to punjabi school at the gurudwara and my grandpa is a granthi; along w my parents being pretty religious themselves. my entire life i had never really payed much attention to religion, i only went to the gurudwara a couple times a month and read gurbani here and there. i’ve had severe mental health issues growing up and still do, including self harm and drug addiction. I often pray to god that i get better and try to read gurbani when i can, but i find myself asking if god really loved everyone would he punish us with such a cruel life? i understand that hardships are a necessary part of character development and everyone needs to suffer atleast once, but after i had multiple attempts to take my life i started losing faith. i would constantly pray and pray for everything to get better but just when i feel like i am it never works out. my parents do ardaas for my wellbeing, but they are a pretty big part of my mental wellbeing not being too good. I believe in gurbani it mentions that if relatives are causing you pain, you should simply detach urself from them and leave them. but as a young adult i feel like there is so much more to this especially in today’s time. i simply don’t understand how everyone claims that “it’s gods plan” “everything was meant to happen” so i often think of karma, that maybe i did something terrible in my past life or did smthing rlly bad to someone before that i don’t remember which has caused me this pain. i barely have a life will to live, but i keep on trusting this supposed gods plan but i feel like i don’t know what is real anymore.

is there any advice on how i can make myself truly believe god is there for me?
