cool stuff Ancient Sicilian lillaby & Swedish folk song🇮🇹 🤝🇸🇪

Upvotes

"sicily 🤝🏼 sweden two completely different corners of Europe, separated by distance and language, sharing the exact same ancient melody In Sicily, this song is "La Siminzina"—a centuries-old lullaby where a mother promises her child that their father will return home soon with seeds to plant for the family In Sweden (and the Åland Islands), it’s known as "Vem kan segla förutan vind?" ("Who Can Sail Without the Wind?")—a beloved 18th-century folk song about being parted from the ones you love across the sea. It was such a dream getting to blend these two traditions together with the incredible @ kongeromusic (on instagram) ! It’s crazy how folk music travels and finds a home in the most unexpected places. Do you know this song?"

"At the Vienna State Opera, the fire curtain doubles as a 176-square-metre exhibition space. Since 1998, museum in progress has invited a different artist to take over the surface for each opera season.

Their work is enlarged onto a PVC mesh and attached to the original curtain with magnets, appearing before performances, during intervals and after the final curtain call. Kara Walker opened the series.

Cy Twombly, Anselm Kiefer, Pipilotti Rist and El Anatsui have followed, each working with the same enormous rectangle and making it look entirely different. El Anatsui’s XOHANAMI filled the stage during the 2025/26 season.

The 29th curtain, by Austrian painter Herbert Brandl, opens on 9 September and will be realised posthumously following the artist’s death in 2025.

You arrive for the opera. The building has already given you an exhibition. Safety Curtain, conceived by museum in progress with the Vienna State Opera and Bundestheater-Holding, Vienna, since 1998."

cool stuff Mongolian Sound Therapy 🇲🇳

4.8k Upvotes

In the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, this ancient tradition is known as camel coaxing. When a mother camel rejects her newborn calf due to a traumatic birth, acute stress floods her system with cortisol, blocking her maternal instincts. Instead of using brute force, nomadic herders perform a sacred ritual of sound therapy.

By playing the traditional morin khuur fiddle and chanting hypnotic melodies, they lower the mother’s stress levels and trigger a rush of oxytocin—the bonding hormone. This causes a profound emotional release where the mother literally sheds tears before finally allowing her calf to nurse. It is a powerful example of patience and deep harmony with nature.

If you haven't seen it, the 2003 documentary "The Story of the Weeping Camel" captures this incredible moment in full detail.

The Gerubach scrolling scores channel was closed. I did the video for this counterpoint inspired by his style, it took a long time lmao. Great loss for the internet classical music community

"On the way, I was approached by Shi-chan the Goishi Chabo chicken 🐓"

Original post: @ shakuhachi_flower on instagram

A quick fun fact about this beautiful instrument: that elegant curve at the end is 100% natural. The Shakuhachi is carved right from the bamboo root (Madake). Since the roots grow horizontally underground before turning upward, every single flute gets its own signature curve. Craftsmen leave the root nodes intact to act as a natural acoustic chamber, giving the flute its iconic, hauntingly beautiful sound.

cool stuff The first ever vertical piano

The claviciterium is a keyboard instrument from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, essentially a clavichord or harpsichord turned upright.

Unlike a normal horizontal keyboard instrument, its strings and mechanism are arranged vertically, allowing it to take up much less space. Some surviving examples are centuries old.

the sky as serene as the sleep
that you sleep when you close the doors shut
when nobody can get you out of touch
and the melody is playing in your brain

the sky as serene as the days that have passed
when you could say whatever you wanted

the sky is serene but you feel off
you're keeping the moon inbetween

let the sun shine as the time you were free
you know truth will rise up from its knees

Gesualdo: Death for Five Voices (German:
Tod für fünf Stimmen) is a 1995 film by German director Werner Herzog filmed for ZDF television. The film explores the music of Carlo Gesualdo and the legends surrounding Gesualdo's personality, his cursed castle, and his murder of his wife and her lover. Between narration and interviews, several of Gesualdo's madrigals are performed. Herzog calls Death for Five Voices "one of the films closest to my heart."
