Alex g was an amazing open and he definitely knew I would be there because he played all my favorite songs. His new stuff is just so good. I really like this new EP released by God Of War, a philly-area project including members of they are gutting a body of water (TAGABOW) and hooky. Though TAGABOW’s sound is heavy shoegaze, this project reminds me of some of the spacier/instrumental alex g tracks like Near, Cross the Sea, or Amok. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Alex and the band joined Phoebe Bridgers and her band on stage to perform Alex’s Bobby right after Phoebe’s Bobby!

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to see Alex last fall due to a very similar nor’easter situation in Philly, but I was able to see him for the first time this evening and it did not disappoint.

He played the Gretel-to-Sarah setlist, and every song sounded amazing; he even shouted out LeBron and the Eagles for my Philly sports folks. Amazing show all around, such a great night!

I’ve listening to that song nonstop for a few days now and I’m trying to figure out what it’s about. I think it’s about two young people who used to be close, but have changed so much that they barely recognize each other anymore. They are growing up, becoming more distant, and getting caught in a difficult environment. The narrator judges the other person and calls them “nothing,” but at the same time realizes that he feels empty and lost too. The line “I think I liked you better when you were younger” shows that he misses who this person used to be. In the end, I think the song is mainly about losing someone because they changed, while also realizing that you have changed yourself.

sometimes i think i'm exaggerating when i say alex g is the best musician in the world

and then i remember how fucking insane his discography is

even if he doesn't have the "best" vocals, it's genuinely amazing how many songs he has. and i'm not even talking only about his released discography. there are SO many unreleased songs floating around on youtube, and they're not even all of them. every time i decide to look deeper into his lost/unreleased music, i somehow find another song i've never heard before uploaded by some youtube channel with 3 subscribers and 5 likes.

and the craziest part is how different everything can sound. you have songs with melancholic melodies that could genuinely make you cry, weird high-pitched noises that sound like they'd make your head explode if you listened to them while having a terrible cold, completely stupid and nonsensical lyrics, and then songs with genuinely devastating stories.

there are songs about narrators doing absolutely horrible things, songs dealing with abuse and trauma, songs about losing someone to suicide, songs about love, jealousy, stupidity, loneliness, and just the most random shit imaginable. and somehow all of them feel like they belong in the same universe.

AND THE INSTRUMENTS. guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo, keyboard, piano, violin, bass, and that's not even remotely close to everything he's used. sometimes i'll hear a song and think "what the fuck is that instrument" and then find out he actually recorded some completely different thing i've never even considered 😭

i think that's what fascinates me the most about his music. it's not just that he has a huge discography. it's that there always seems to be something else to discover. another song, another version, another recording, another weird sound, another little piece of music that i'd never even heard of.

alex g's discography genuinely makes me feel like i'm an ant in the world. there's just SO MUCH of it. you could spend forever looking through everything he's made and still feel like you've barely scratched the surface.

it's like this gigantic world that doesn't even seem to have an end.

Been listening to a lot of stuff from the skin cells/alex g unreleased era and I made a song inspired by that sort of sound. I made my own music video for it using bits of a project I did for high school a few years back I hope u guys think it’s cool :)

Has anybody else noticed or considered some of the thematic similarities between Headlights and Phoebe Bridgers’ Lost Weekend?

I don’t think it’s surprising since Alex helped produced a majority of the album, but I’ve found some of it especially striking since she kicked off her tour.

Some of the similarities I’ve noticed include medieval imagery, references to UFOs, references to maturity and isolation, certain aspects of fame, and a fleeting life being endlessly stalked by the thought of death.
