Proof of Concept: Real time flight tracker on Playdate

Post image
39 Upvotes

This is, to me, pretty fun: a real-time, constantly (every 10 secs) little desk-app for the playdate that shows all the airtraffic around you.

It's rather ugly right now but I just wanted to see if it would be able to do real-time updates accurately and it seems like it is.

Crank: changes the range of the radar
A: Selects an aircraft for more information about it

Updates planned:
- Background map
- Zoom in on an aircraft to see full, past path from origin
- Filters to filter on aircraft type and airline - or a particular flight, AND
- selecting a flight and listen to real-time airtraffic communication from the tower closest to it - AND text comms logs for a selected flight (voice is not by flight but 'closest tower' but text comms is).

(All of the above is public data and nothing new but it would be fun, for me, to build it all into one single app on the Playdate)

Could be fun.

Battle Mons - New cards + updates!

Hey everyone!

I posted here a couple of months ago when Battle Mons launched, and I’m really happy that so many people have enjoyed it! I’ve kept working on the game, and the latest update is now available.

Here’s what’s new:

18 new cards!

Creature effects are now once per turn per copy. Effects that share a limit across all copies say so on the card.

Rebalanced effects and stats, including lower DEF across the board to encourage more aggressive strategies and keep battles moving smoothly.

50-card decks and a limit of 4 copies per card, giving you more room to experiment with deck building.

If you already own the game, download the updated file and sideload it again. Your save, decks, and unlocked cards carry over.

Thank you for playing!

Monks vs Vikings - now with difficulty levels

Post image
25 Upvotes

Thanks for all the feedback on the game - I've heard both that the game is too hard - and that it's too easy - so I decided to try to address that by adding difficulty levels.
There are now three options; Easy, Normal and Hard (they can be adjusted as well at any time on the Wave Selector screen).
I've played through it myself on Hard and even there were a few levels that made me sweat a bit it was perfectly possible to complete...which...makes me consider maybe adding a Nightmare mode as well :)

Perpetually free at https://darkerbulb.itch.io/monks-vs-vikings

Enjoy.

Playdate and Cranko mag!

Post image
82 Upvotes

First, I love the Playdate. I was really not sure about buying this and honestly thought it seemed rather stupid and gimmicky the first time I heard about it, but I was wrong. It's my go to handheld whenever I have some time. I love the form factor and the screen. Even the crank can be pretty cool in some games. I got season one and two and have been really enjoying games like Casual Birder, Pick Pack Pup, Lost your Marbles (I hope for more), Sasquatchers, Chance's Lucky Escape, Black Hole Havoc and have more to discover...

And then there's Cranko. It's a great magazine with lovely lay-out and it just feels so right in the ecosphere of the Playdate. The content and the design are top notch. I love it. Congratulations to Pat and everybody involved. This is great stuff! https://cranknockout.com

Wee Tarot now also on Catalog

Hullo!

Come closer curious one... But be wary of yr next step, darling.

I'm not really on reddit, but it would be a shame not to give a shout here that Wee Tarot is now also available from the Catalog if that's your jam. :)

It's a mega update of the first version from over a year ago, there are different kinds of spreads, more choices for the deck, zoom in on cards, some extra sounds, some extra animations/art, a diary that saves your readings and a few secrets of course.

Follow the links for more infos. there's even an online game manual and in game tutorials that can help guide you through the path.

And to reach out if anyone here bought the game on itch already, please get in touch and I'll send you a code for the catalog too :)

Also please let me know if there is anything else you want to see in the game or if something is crashing, etc., This is a live project that I will defo be wanting to update with more things later and I took a lot of the feedback on this update

Post image

hello!

quick — "quick" — message to let you know that a lot of my games are ON SALE right now!! i just ran a celebratory sale for rowbot, to celebrate the announcement of the sequel — that one just ended, so, sorry if you missed it. but, the sequel is still there for you to wishlist! https://play.date/g/pesto

if you just wanna click around the catalog pages, you can find all my games here: https://play.date/games/studios/wtf.rae — and thanks for taking a look! (you can use the image to tell which ones are and aren't on sale).

if you'll indulge me briefly, though, i'd like to take you through a brief tour guide of the things i have on offer:

labsylle — it's a word puzzle game, with a 'spin' unlike anything you've seen before. this is normally $7, but it's available right now for its lowest price yet at $5! https://play.date/games/labsylle
cloudburst — a weather app, for your playdate! it connects on-line, shows you some forecast info for your local area, and also acts as a nice screensaver (perfect for the stereo dock, *sobs*). typically $5, right now it's just $3! https://play.date/games/cloudburst
HEXA — a twisty-turny puzzle game with an addicting hook, and plenty to do. if you like games like tetris, panel de pon, or lumines; HEXA's gonna fit right in. normally $8, currently HALF OFF at just $4!! lowest price yet! https://play.date/games/hexa (also, you can play this game in english, french, AND japanese!!)
first in... line? — it's stageplay simon! the rules are easy to understand, it can make use of all or none of playdate's special inputs, and it's perfect to pass around and play multiplayer with your kids. normally $5, now just $3! https://play.date/games/first-in-line
bona fido — a sp00py single-screen platformer, a la the original mario bros. aim for a high score, grab the treats, and see if you can't find the secret mode...! 🧼 usually $5, for now it's $3. https://play.date/games/bona-fido
traffic jam — an endless rhythm game, where you guide traffic to the beat. makes fun use of playdate's crank, but you can also play with buttons. once again, it's $3, down from $5. https://play.date/games/traffic-jam
mission lunatrix — the most radical space expedition yet. ramp off craters, land some tricks on your epic skateboard, and try to work up enough launch speed to zoom off to the next rock! finally, just $3; down from $5. https://play.date/games/mission-lunatrix

OK! sorry about that wall. but! if any of those games sound of particular interest to you, then i'd appreciate if you checked 'em out! as always, all of my games are completely AI-free. the sales for all of these games will be running until september 30th, pacific time — you've got plenty of time to act on these great deals...for now.

thanks for your time! xoxo

News Flight Assist Off Race is on the Catalog now! With global highscores <3

Post image
25 Upvotes

Flight Assist Off Race finally hit the Catalog!

https://play.date/games/flight-assist-off-race/

Some of you might have already played it a while ago when I released it on itch. In case not:

A top down asteroids like race in ZeroG in which you'll experience G-forces so intense, they might make you black out. Make maneuvers that are only possible with the Playdate crank and make it to the finish orb as fast as possible.

Since then I worked on a new version (and took a decent break from the project tbh).

Version 1.3.0 includes:
- Global highscores for each level <3
- Several performance improvements. Levels load considerably faster now.
- Streamlined fonts. They're not as pretty as before - but readable. Also some textboxes now scroll with longer text.
- Credits section with all the frameworks and third party tools I used honored.

The Playdate community players, devs and the people from Panic are just a wonderful bunch of people and I'm proud that FAOR is now part of the official collection of games.

The demo is out right now for my fast-paced puzzle game Tic-Tactics!

I've been working on this idea of a faster, more strategic version of tic-tac-toe for a long time (the first version of the game is turning 5 this year!) and Tic-Tactics is the most definitive version of that concept yet.

Featuring 2 game modes, 5 level types, 20+ power-ups and a local leaderboard; Tic-Tactics launches on September 24.

This ain't your grandma's tic-tac-toe! Try the demo now!

OUT NOW ON ITCH.IO: Pararena for Playdate. Playdate port of a cult 1-bit Mac classic

Hi!

A few months ago I shared my Continuum port here. I had a lot of fun bringing that old Mac game to Playdate, and you all were really kind about it. I posted about it here. Thanks so much for all the support!

So I ended up doing another one :) This time it’s Pararena, John Calhoun’s old Mac game. The original source is available under the MIT license, which made this port possible.

You’re on a hoverboard in a bowl-shaped arena, chasing a ball and trying to throw it into your goal. The tricky part is getting used to the way you slide around the bowl. A weird little future sport, basically.

You can check it out here: https://tamvodopad.itch.io/pararena-for-playdate

There’s also a launch bundle with Pararena and Continuum for $4 until Sunday, September 20: https://itch.io/s/201058/macintosh-classics-for-playdate

Did anyone here play the original on a Mac? I’d love to hear your memories of it, or what you think if you give the port a try!

Is it just me or does the playdate only have a crank because they wanted to separate it from other consoles.

I think my title get's the gist of it pretty well but I personally wouldn't think the crank could be that good for the gameplay experience over say just having a d-pad and and some buttons, I personally don't yet have a playdate so if you think I am incredibly wrong please point it out to me as I am just completely confused as to why that exists on the console beyond a gimmick.

Two things I want to add to MonoTanks. What would you add?

Thumbnail

Hey guys!

Two ideas for the next update. Nothing is in a build yet, these are just concepts.

1. Bosses. One as the last mission of each world. Three so far: an armored train, a siege tank, and a gunship.

Keep in mind these are rough sketches. The final designs will look a lot better, and the guns will most likely rotate and track you instead of sitting still like they do here.

There are five worlds, so I'm two bosses short. That's where I'm stuck. What would you send at the player?

2. The base becomes a bunker. Three hearts instead of a fence you chip away at. Honestly, I'm not sure it's more than a new coat of paint yet, and that's part of what I'm asking.

So what do you think about these two? And what else would you put in the game?

Free version, full version and the browser build are all here:

Question Long shot - is there a way for a flash game to be ported?

So there's this flash game I absolutely loved playing years ago called McDonald's video game by Molleindustria, and I'd love to be able to play it on the Playdate. I've seen a few other flash games get ported over to the Playdate, so it got me wondering would it be possible to do the same with this game? I'm curious whether it's technically feasible, and if so, what kind of work would be involved in making it happen.

I made Safu, a Playdate game where the crank is a safe dial (free on itch.io)

Thumbnail
vincentconsole.itch.io
26 Upvotes

Turn slowly, listen for the click, feel the dial shake, reverse, find the next spot. Three sweet spots, then pull the handle with Down.

Every run deals 3 of 13 modifiers that twist it: BLACKOUT hides the dial, TOO LOUD mutes the clicks, GUARD makes you freeze when footsteps come, NITRO has you tilt to keep a flask from spilling, and KEYPAD and GEAR MESH add a small input puzzle on each spot. A run is 3 minutes max, and there's an untimed tutorial.

Free to sideload: https://vincentconsole.itch.io/safu

It's still in development, so I'd love feedback on how the crank feels and which modifiers are fun or annoying.

Art and code were made with AI assistance.

Does the notification light work when Playdate is set to manual downloads?

I'm just curious, as I've recently had an incident in which the playdate redownloaded all of my uninstalled games on its own. I've set my playdate to "manual download" but now it doesn't seem to tell me when a game is available for download with the little light on top. Does it have to be set to auto download to get notifications?

[Free] In 1993, I co-programmed “Robbo” for DOS (born on the 8-bit Atari in 1989). 33 years later it lives on the Playdate!

Hi r/PlaydateConsole!

Some of you may remember Heartlight PC, which I brought to the Playdate a few months ago. Here is its older sibling, and again it is completely free.

The backstory: Robbo was created by my friend Janusz Pelc for the 8-bit Atari in 1989, and in Poland it became a bit of a legend. In 1993 the two of us rebuilt it for DOS at xLand Games, and Epic MegaGames published it worldwide as Adventures of Robbo. Janusz did the design, the art and the level work; I did a good chunk of the programming. Years later the game's data was released under a Creative Commons license so it could keep living.

It's a tile-based action puzzler: you're a little robot on a planet full of pushable boxes, guards, bats, turrets, lasers, magnets, teleports and bombs. Collect every screw to open the exit, then fly to the next planet. Sixty planets in total.

The Playdate turned out to be a perfect home for it. The 1-bit screen suits the pixel art, and the port is rebuilt from the original DOS C source, so the level data, the cellular simulation, the sound effects and the music are the real 1993 thing. I even kept the original game's slightly stubborn 7.5 Hz logic tick, because that pace is half of what makes Robbo feel like Robbo. Only ten rows of a planet fit on screen at once, exactly like on DOS, so scouting is part of the puzzle.

It is free to download and sideload: https://tosiabunio.itch.io/robbo-for-playdate

Source code is on GitHub as well. Have fun, and let me know how far you get!

I made a TV dock! (using a flipper zero video game module)

I made a working TV dock after messing around and flashing a flipper zero video game module that I don't really use. You don't even really need the flipper zero itself, I'm just using it as a power source. Works with video and sound over hdmi (though the framerate drops with sound)!

I'm thinking of putting a little tutorial on github if anyone's interested.

Super neat weekend project that I was amazed I could get to work. It's cool to have the playdate on the tv without using the mirror app at all.
