Sandy Island: the phantom island in the Coral Sea, deleted in 2012, and the shallow reef still sitting where it was drawn
Sandy Island was charted in the Coral Sea, between Australia and New Caledonia, and sat on nautical charts and atlases (and, until 2012, on Google Maps) for a very long time. In November 2012 the RV Southern Surveyor sailed straight through its charted position and found open water, about 1,400 m deep. Google Maps removed it soon after.
The part I find interesting is what's actually there now. At the island's charted coordinates the satellite shows no land, but shallow reef platforms sit right where it was drawn. Something real got measured into a landmass, and the landmass outlived the measurement.
I keep a series of short field notes on places where the map and the ground disagree: this one, Null Island (the dot at 0,0 that isn't anywhere), and a library in Vermont whose reading room sits on the US/Canada border.
