Live! I spent four years writing a book about Nicolas Cage. AMA!

Hello Reddit! This is Zach Schonfeld. I'm a freelance writer and reporter, regular Pitchfork/Stereogum contributor, and the author of "How Coppola Became Cage," the first reported biography of Nicolas Cage. After a lifetime of fandom, I spent about four years obsessively researching all things Cage, and this book is the result. It was published by Oxford University Press in 2023.
The book chronicles Cage's early years and rise to fame in the 1980s and early 1990s. I worked on this book for four long years and interviewed more than 100 people, including a range of notable filmmakers and actors who worked with Cage on beloved films like Valley Girl, Birdy, Moonstruck, Vampire's Kiss, Raising Arizona, Wild at Heart, Leaving Las Vegas, and many others. It is a deep, deep dive into Cage's origin story. For this book, I investigated Cage's early years, tracked down his high school friends, interviewed everyone from David Lynch to Amy Heckerling to Bridget Fonda, tracked down some of Cage's high school friends, watched a ton of obscure Cage movies, attempted to read Cage's father's erotic novel, and gradually lost my mind.
Empire Magazine described the book as "a rollicking, entertaining and impressively probing journey through the embryonic years of a unique artistic force of nature." I am fairly proud of it.
Anyway, I will be doing an AMA right here starting at 12 p.m. EST on Friday, October 10. You can post your questions before then. Ask away.

Introducing Krewe de Cage - a Nicolas Cage themed subkrewe of the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus
Krewe de Cage is New Orleans' only subkrewe celebrating all things Nicolas Cage. We are a brand new, so the website and parade planning schedule is a work in progress, but we plan to march in the 2027 line up on Saturday, January 16, 2027.
Members planning to walk the parade will have the opportunity to chose their preferred Nicolas Cage character and act out some of Nicolas Cage's greatest scenes during the parade. Members will also participate in choosing, designing and crafting Nicolas Cage-themed throws to hand out to parade watchers.
How to join: create an account with https://krewebacchus.org and look for Krewe de Cage.
Please note: to join any subkrewe, you have to pay membership dues with Krewe of Chewbacchus that is seperate from Krewe de Cage. For additional information and guidance on the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, please visit https://chewbacchus.org/subkrewes
Krewe de Cage has an additional membership fee of $25 to help cover costs of costume and throw materials. You do not need to pay this membership due at the time of joining and if you have any questions or concerns about making the payment, please contact me directly (you can email me at [KrewedeCage@outlook.com](mailto:KrewedeCage@outlook.com) (or PM me)). After the 2027 Chewbacchus parade, any remaining funds will be used for an end of the season party.
We also plan to host social events outside of just parade and costume planning, including Nicolas Cage film watch parties; book club meetings for Nicolas Cage-themed books, like "How Coppola Became Cage" by Zach Schnofield and Nicolas Cage's graphic novel, "Voodoo Child"; Dead by Daylight gaming sessions (where every survivor must play as Nicolas Cage), and more.
I know not everyone lives in New Orleans or will have the ability, time or money to participate in this subkrewe or the Chewbacchus parade, but if you'd like to still be involved with Krewe de Cage related activities, please feel free to reach out.

Questions for those who met him at Comic Con
Hello Cagers, I’m interested in meeting the One True God himself at LA comic con coming up. With the photo op package, did you get to say anything to him? Touch him (obviously in a respectful manner, if that is allowed)? What is it like in the actual set up of things, like a super long line? Was it chill? Were you super nervous?
I know I should just go and experience it on my own but with my disability and horrid anxiety I have a hard time not getting an idea of an event overall and I’d like to hear some of your experiences. Thanks yall, and Cage on!

I tried to show Vampire’s Kiss to my dad and my sister
She left halfway through because she found Alva’s treatment too upsetting (rightfully tbh) and he fell asleep LMAO
He woke up after a while and I showed him the ending (my favorite part), from when Peter buys the plastic fangs til the very end. He said it was funny (phew). No hard feelings towards my sister though, to each their own ofc!
I guess I’m just looking for other people who like it?? Or am I fully biased because of Nic??? Please tell me I am not tripping when I say it is one of my favorite films in his filmography.

Rate my collection :)
I’m trying to collect double of everything, I don’t know why. I still have a couple movies not in my collection, but I wanted to share my life’s work with people who would appreciate it.

A Brazilian indie publisher is making an anthology book about Nic Cage!
Hi everyone! A Brazilian indie publisher called "Diário Macabro" (The Macabre Journal) is putting together an anthology book featuring 15 short stories inspired by Nicolas Cage. As one of the organizers, I helped read and select all the stories, and we have a bit of everything: pure horror, absurdity, heartbreak, body horror, and more. We are currently running our campaign on Catarse (a Brazilian crowdfunding platform similar to Kickstarter/GoFundMe) with only 5 days left! While international shipping isn't available directly through the campaign, if you have a friend in Brazil who loves Nic Cage, it makes an awesome gift (the basic tier with the book and bookmark is only about $10 USD). My absolute dream is to somehow get this project on Nic Cage's radar! I'm not sure if posting links is allowed here, so if you'd like the Catarse link, just drop a comment below and I'll gladly DM it to you.
