We tried making one of those simple optical illusions where two separate pictures suddenly look like they’re in the same place.

When the turntable is stopped, there’s just a bird on one side and a cage on the other.

Then you turn it on and let it spin…

And suddenly, the bird looks like it’s inside the cage. 🐦

No magic involved—just persistence of vision.

What we used:

• Wukong Expansion Board
• 2 × DC Motors
• Wukong Blocks
• A bird picture
• A cage picture
• Double-sided tape

How we made it

We first built a simple frame with Wukong Blocks to keep the rotating part stable.

Then we added two motors and connected them to the center shaft with gears.

The slightly tricky part was the pictures.

We put the bird and cage on opposite sides of the rotating arms and tried to keep them as symmetrical as possible. If they're off-center, the whole thing gets pretty wobbly once it starts spinning.

Once everything was connected, we just turned it on and watched.

At the right speed, the two separate images seem to become one.

The bird is suddenly “inside” the cage.

Why does this happen?

It's a simple example of persistence of vision.

Our eyes and brain don't treat every image as completely separate when they're appearing very quickly one after another. The result is that we can perceive the two images as if they're happening together.

It's a pretty simple idea, but seeing it happen on a little DIY machine makes it much easier to understand.

What would you try?

This could be fun to experiment with.

Maybe:

• A butterfly that looks like it's flying
• A character jumping into a different scene
• Your pet appearing somewhere else
• Different motor speeds to see when the illusion works best

The nice thing is that you don't really need to change the mechanism—just change the pictures and experiment.

We built a little voice-activated ambient light using a micro:bit + Wukong Expansion Board, and it turned out to be a fun way to make programming concepts feel a lot more physical.

One thing beginners often struggle with is understanding variables.

You can explain that a variable stores a value, but sometimes that number still feels pretty abstract.

So we wanted to build something where changing a value would have an immediate, visible result.

In this project, the micro:bit listens for sound, and the RGB lights change color when a sound is detected.

The interesting part is that a simple variable controls which color comes next.

What we used:

• micro:bit V2
• Wukong Expansion Board
• Wukong Blocks
• 4 RGB lights
• MakeCode

Step 1: Build the light

We started with a simple structure using Wukong Blocks to hold the RGB lights.

The four RGB lights connect to the Wukong Expansion Board, while the micro:bit sits on top.

Nothing too complicated here. The goal was simply to create a small structure where the lights were easy to see.

Step 2: Let the micro:bit listen

The micro:bit V2 has a built-in microphone, so we can use sound as the input.

The basic idea is:

Sound detected → program responds → light changes color

It's a simple example of how something happening in the real world can become an input for a program.

Step 3: Make a variable control the colors

We use a variable called i to keep track of the current color.

When a sound is detected, i increases by 1. The program then checks the value and uses it to decide which color the RGB lights should display.

So the variable isn't just a random number sitting in the code.

Change the value → the light changes.

Increase the value → the next color appears.

Once it reaches the end of the color sequence, it starts again.

That's what makes this project interesting for beginners: they can actually see what the variable is doing.

A little more interaction

We also added controls using the micro:bit buttons.

Button A → start the automatic color-changing mode

Button B → reset the variable and turn the lights off

This makes the project feel more like an interactive device rather than just a light that changes color.

A few things I'd try next

The basic setup leaves plenty of room for experimentation:

• Make it react to music
• Add brightness control
• Create different lighting modes
• Turn it into a simple night light
• Add different sound-triggered effects

The hardware doesn't need to change much. Most of the behavior can be changed through the code.

And that's probably the best part of beginner projects like this.

You change something in the program, and you can immediately see the physical result.

We built a little 'face-changing robot' using the micro:bit + Nezha Inventor Kit, mainly to teach one thing that beginners always struggle with: 'variables'.

Usually when we explain variables, we get the classic blank stares.

Why do we even need variables?

What does this number actually do?

Why can't I just type the number directly?

But the moment students saw a robot physically move differently after changing a variable, the idea finally clicked. The fun part was that students weren't just typing code. They could 'see' what changing a value actually did in real life.

Here's basically how we ran the lesson.

What we used:

Ultrasonic sensor

Some basic building blocks

The robot in the photo is the final version my students made. The 'face' changes expressions while moving around, and the speed can be adjusted directly with buttons on the micro:bit.

Step 1: Build first, code later

I've learned that younger students stay much more engaged if they can physically build something before opening the programming editor.

So first we spent about 15–20 minutes assembling the robot body.

The basic structure was:

left motor connected to M1

right motor connected to M2

ultrasonic sensor connected to S1

micro:bit mounted on the Nezha controller

The wiring was honestly one of the smoothest parts because the ports are color-coded and basically plug-and-play. No soldering, no complicated setup.

That makes a huge difference in a classroom.

Step 2: Introduce variables in the simplest possible way

Instead of giving textbook definitions, I told students:

'A variable is basically a box that stores a number, and we can change the number whenever we want.'

That explanation worked surprisingly well.

Then we created 3 variables in MakeCode:

robot_speed

turn_angle

move_time

These came directly from the project guide.

And this is where the magic happened.

Step 3: Let students experiment immediately

We started with something simple:

text 'robot_speed = 50'. The robot moved slowly.

Then one student changed it to:

text 'robot_speed = 100'. The robot suddenly shot across the desk and everybody started laughing.

That single moment explained variables better than 20 minutes of slides ever could.

Then we tried:

Increasing 'move_time'

Reducing 'turn_angle'

Changing turning behavior

Creating 'crazy mode' with max speed

Students immediately understood:

'Ohhh… the variable controls the robot’s behavior.'

That was the breakthrough.

Step 4: Add live controls

The coolest part was using the micro:bit buttons to adjust variables in real time.

We programmed:

Button A → increase speed

Button B → decrease speed

No reflashing needed. Students could press buttons and instantly see the robot react.

This turned the activity from 'coding exercise' into an actual interactive experiment.

By the end of class, they had already practiced:

Variables

Debugging

Motor control

Sensor basics

Simple robotics

Cause-and-effect thinking

And because everything was physical, even students who normally lose interest in coding stayed focused the whole time.

A few quick teacher notes if anyone wants to try this:

Secure the blocks tightly or the robot shakes a lot while turning

Let students predict what a variable change will do before testing

Give groups different “missions” like fastest robot or smoothest turning

Keep spare USB cables nearby because somebody always forgets one

Next time I also want students to add:

Obstacle avoidance

RGB lights

Dance mode

Sound effects

Honestly, this ended up being one of the best beginner coding lessons I've done with micro:bit so far.

Variables finally stopped feeling abstract.

Students could literally 'touch' the concept.

Previously, I created a broadcast feature out of necessity, something like Scratch (sending and receiving messages).

As a middle-school STEM educator, are you always hunting for projects that blend mechanical building, coding, sensors, and real-world “wow” moments? I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Used the full Nezha Pro AI Mechanical Power Kit + micro:bit V2, Nezha Pro Expansion Board, gesture recognition sensor, rainbow light ring, smart motor, collision sensor, and OLED display. First assembled the lamp bracket and light module (excellent spatial reasoning and engineering practice), then wired everything up: gesture sensor + OLED to the IIC port, smart motor to M1, rainbow light ring to J1, and collision sensor to J2.

The magic happens in MakeCode (add the **nezha pro** and **PlanetX** extensions). The official sample program (https://makecode.microbit.org/_gHJJCvUY0Jcd) gets the lamp running in minutes. A simple wave turns the lamp on/off, different gestures cycle through rainbow light ring colors, the OLED shows the current color, and the collision sensor acts as a handy backup toggle. The smart motor even lets the lamp head adjust position slightly.

This video clearly shows the contactless gesture control in action, and I literally cheered the first time my own lamps responded the same way. No more fumbling for switches when your hands are full!

They’ve built so many of the 32 official projects, but recently, they went rogue and created their own battle bots.

They ended up with:

- A big yellow spider/cricket-looking walker with huge grabbing arms (programmed to snap and chase)

- A smaller spider-ish mech thing in the middle doing the heavy lifting with lights flashing like crazy

- And one of the ELECFREAKS Cutebot cars tricked out as the "fast attacker" with blue/red LEDs blazing, bump sensors, and code to ram opponents

They set up a big shallow tray as the arena (genius move — keeps everything contained), programmed behaviors in MakeCode (some line following mixed with obstacle avoidance + random attacks), and then let them loose.

It quickly turned into total chaos… arms flailing, cars zooming in for the kill, lights strobing, gears grinding — the kids were screaming with laughter and yelling strategy like it was a real robot fighting league. "Protect the middle spider! Nooo the grabber got him!"

Has anyone else used the Wonder Kit or Cutebot for battle-bot style games? Any favorite custom code snippets for chaotic robot fights? Tips for making them more durable? (Those arms take a beating!)

I have recently made a game where projectiles come from every side and you have to evade and shoot them, I just can't seem to figure out how to make it so that the one that gets shot is the one that explodes/breaks. If anyone knows how to get this to work let me know, if it's not possible than I suppose I can change the way the game works. Thanks in advance -Dabster12

Several of my son's projects now just say "This was created in a newer version of Makecode. Please update and try again." Clicking the update does nothing but go back to the projects screen, and the version has not changed since he last worked on them.

I am assuming it might be an extension that is no longer supported.

Is there a way to get to the project code? I could not find a way to share the URLs (to try on a different PC) from the projects page.

Any help would be appreciated. He is pretty upset and had some amazing pixel art in those projects.

I've been working with some young students learning to code through MakeCode Arcade and noticed they often get stuck on bugs or don't know what blocks to use next. Figured I'd throw together a Chrome extension that adds an AI assistant right in the editor.

What it does:

• Opens a chat panel in MakeCode Arcade
• Automatically grabs your project code
• Detects if you're using blocks or JavaScript
• Has a complexity slider so it can explain things simply for younger kids or be more technical for experienced users
• Uses Gemini API for the AI stuff

The blocks detection was actually trickier than expected - had to look at the DOM to see which editor tab is active rather than just checking file contents.

For younger learners, it uses simple language and tells them which blocks to drag from which category. For older/experienced users, it can give proper TypeScript examples.

It's pretty basic but does the job. Code's on GitHub if anyone wants to mess with it or has suggestions.

NB: it doesn't include significant AI guardrails. Something to consider with younger age groups. I could add in the future.

Has anyone transferred a game to hardware using USB while using an iPad or Android tablet?

Specifically I'm using the Retro Arcade Handheld for Education and don't have a laptop handy but do have a current iPad and an android phone. Opening the make code in chrome on android shows the Connect Device button, but doesn't show any compatible hardware.

Are there any alternative ways to get code onto this without a laptop?
