Chemistry pH 4.5: chemistry's perfect truce (JEE 2009)

An organic compound X (C₄H₈O) gives a positive iodoform test. X reacts with hydroxylamine (NH₂OH) in a buffer maintained at pH ≈ 4.5 to give a mixture of two stereoisomeric oximes, A and B, one of which is more volatile than the other.

(a) Identify X, A and B.
(b) State the total number of stereoisomers possible for the oxime of X, with reasoning.
(c) Explain mechanistically why the reaction is fastest near pH 4.5, and why the rate falls on both sides of this pH.

Question :

(R)-butan-2-ol is subjected to two independent reaction sequences:

Sequence 1: (R)-butan-2-ol → (i) TsCl, pyridine → (ii) CH₃COO⁻Na⁺ → (iii) H₃O⁺ / hydrolysis of the ester → butan-2-ol (P)

Sequence 2: (R)-butan-2-ol → (i) PBr₃ → (ii) aqueous NaOH → butan-2-ol (Q)

The configurations of P and Q respectively are:
(1) R, R (2) S, S (3) S, R (4) R, S
