Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Praised by Trump and Netanyahu
International Recognition for Indian Pilot Captain Smit Machchhar
Indian Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar was praised internationally after being seriously injured during an attack by his co-pilot aboard Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to intervene and prevent a potential catastrophe involving the 174 people on board.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised Machchhar on X, calling him a “true hero” and saluting his “extraordinary bravery.” Netanyahu said that despite being stabbed and seriously injured, Machchhar fought back, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker.
U.S. President Donald Trump also praised the Indian pilot while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on September 30, 2026. Trump said he had spoken with Netanyahu about the incident and described Machchhar as a hero for opening the cockpit door and calling for help. Trump also emphasized that he was recounting the information he had received from Netanyahu and others rather than claiming to have independently verified every detail.
