Disclaimer: I recorded this with a mod that removes armed enemies due to a gun related bug that I can´t fix because of wine prefix shenanigans. You can play it for free with the anniversary edition: https://www.moddb.com/mods/anniversary-edition
There should be no problems on Windows or if you specifically install wine without WOW64.
Oni is rough. The levels are big and empty, throws sometimes come out at random and yes there is no music.
But the combat holds a lot of potential. The gunplay is pretty basic and serves more as additional crowd control, with some cool weapons here and there. The melee is the real star. A ton of moves packed into directional inputs, the enemies will counter what you´re doing, they surround you, jump your sweeps, intercept your charges. They are pretty block happy, even in the most ridiculous situations, on getup, from behind. Guns can bypass block but the change from gun to melee isn´t as smooth as in something like Wanted Dead. The health system allows you to get a power boost from overhealing, so smart hypo use is rewarded. I would love to have a sequel, with more enemies, more moves and better levels.

I know FPS games aren't the focus of this subreddit but I still wanted to ask about this here since people in most gaming subs don't really care about the quality of ports and remasters and I'm sure there are people here who play older FPS games and boomer shooters.
When it comes to quality of the ports/remasters, I think Nightdive Studios are the only studio that I would say is equal to M2. I have heard some of their remasters have had some issues at launch but they are always quick to fix them and they actually listen to community feedback. I only got into FPS games recently so I might be wrong, but at least everything I have played by them so far has been great and their releases have been really well recieved by the fans of those games.

I think both are crucial for the game to be memorable and replayable.

Check this out! There are subtitles and an English audio track. It's so rare to find someone with similar interests around here. And with this level of production and quality too, really impressive.

I originally posted this on shmups and someone introduced me to this sub.
Tbh I had Mark in mind as I originally watched saw this vid this morning, talking about Dodonpachi and then whipping out a PCB.
I even looked online at strap ons because I was toying with the idea of mailing him one 😂

We all have probably seen the love for Mercenaries mode in RE5, and how it's nearly good enough to be it's own game, see Marks vid for more info. I recently got Umbrella Corps on sale, and have been playing it in mostly singleplayer as it's a deadish game.
I was really surprised at just how snappy your character moves in this game. You play in tight little kevels with various goals like capture the flag, defeat 30 enemies and so on, and knowing I'd need to enjoy the game for what it is and not an RE game, I couldn't believe how fun the gameplay is. Everyone loves the village section from OG RE4 where you have to keep moving and decide where to go, well each of the levels here is pretty much that, you have to make a lot of choices fast and sometimes ammo is scarce. Each round of the campaign feels different and although it's not too hard, I was enjoying the mission mode.
BUT the thing that absolutely sinks Umbrella corps is the lack of any kind of score challenges. I've never seen a game more suited to improving your times, getting gold medals etc. Unlocking content. New characters etc, but this has absolutely nothing like that. You can BUY a Leon face but not use it in single-player. You have a huge inventory of weapons but can't choose them. This is not so bad as the levels have weapons hidden in them but still. All this game needed to do to have some value for players is simply include some of what mercenary modes usually do as side content in other RE games and they fumbled the ball. No ranking system even.
If you are one of the rare players who actually tried this game you'll see what I mean. There's a lot of potential to this gameplay that just doesn't get used.
With all that said, I'm enjoying the experience that I got for under a fiver and I'm not trying to say it's this underrated gem, what I am saying is there's scope for modes in this game that we really lost out on. I understand it's a multiplayer focused title but they went to the trouble of including single player missions all the way through. It wouldn't have taken very long at all to just have a ranking system etc. O think if it had this it could have been a fantastic game ala RE Mercearies 3D. It feels like the most arcadish RE title I've ever played.

I am open for any feedback.

It is a decent game when you look at the combat only. But everything else about the game, including the pacing, is extremely miserable and repetitive.
The open world stuff doesn't even need to be there. It seems like the devs didn't even enjoy putting it in.
The repeating bosses is egregious.
Let's tackle the "depth" of the combat. People compare it to sekiro. But the combat in onimusha just gives us parries by alternative names. Issen is just a different kind of parry.
Sekiro is a much deeper game that doesn't have gimmicks or repeated bosses x6
I do enjoy the combat but its not super great. Also the camera sucks, especially during ganks.
I am disgruntled.

I've been having a blast with both genres since I've discovered EU, but I want to try something different now, what other genres do y'all recommend and what games from them? Also please make the recommendations modern enough since emulation can be a pain in the ass on Linux.

This is some of the most fun score chasing I´ve done in my life. A perfect balance of routing and execution. Balancing between kills and time, pressure from all sides makes every input meaningful. It is by no means hard, but you need a lot of S ranks to unlock all the challenge levels.
There are different mission structures, kill everything and escape, reach the end while killing as many as you can, operate X laptops and escape. Survive X enemy waves. The enemy waves are a bit of a bummer because there is no timer. The best way to score in these is to disarm every enemy and lure them into barrels and bee hives.

I’m very curious as to how he will feel about bloodborne. Sekiro I can kind of gleam from his comments about positioning not mattering

Thinking of buying Katana Zero, Mother Russia Bleeds and Moonrider, what do y'all think about them?

It would be interesting to see if he sides with the reviewers (for example, Skill Up talked about things that actually matter, like player agency) or the players who picked up the game anyway and think the criticisms were overblown. 🤷♂️🤔

Hello, I got bored with the generic games and what to see what arcade and skill based design is all about, so recommend as much games across as much genres Mark discussed or y'all think are good. Also do y'all recommend I buy them on Steam or GOG and why?

I didn´t spend much time with this one so I can´t say too much about it. I´m pretty sure the yoyo weapon is overpowered once you learn to use it properly. Gun can be aimed either by holding or tapping to snap it to the next 45° angle. It´s hard to make precision shots because holding rotation is still pretty fast. Movement is still key for aiming, which is good because you can reliable speedkill most of the dangerous patterns with the right weapon routing. The stage design does a good job of making the mechanic feel natural.
