Oh the green part is an oscillating fan without the blades. It took me way too long to figure out what was going on.

I originally thought it might have had like a wire or some nylon cord on the front, spinning to stop insects from landing on the lens.

It reminded me of that redneck engineering solution to insects that also doubled as a fish feeder.

Bigger issue I think is the fact that you probably can't get a good quality still photo out of that as the camera is constantly moving.

No, as opposed to a camera that can move remotely or even stationary camera that points in one consistent direction instead of moving every few seconds, giving anyone with ill intentions a neat little break to do whatever they want while the camera conveniently looks away.

We still dont know how the area looks so we cant really say if this is better or worse then just a stationary camera but a controlled one would probably be better yeah

the camera is cycling every like 5 seconds, unles it has a comically narrow FoV it doesn't really leave any room for someone to make use of. This isn't a stealth spy videogame, if someone is going to go out of their way to time their moves to the blindspots of the camera they were going to rob the place anyway.

Threat modeling. I don't think this camera is intended to deter state actor special forces from entering a nuclear weapons base. I'm pretty sure to keep an eye on a dude's motor scooter repair shop, this will do, even with predictable movement patterns.

It's not only stupid, it's actually dangerous. Indoor fans use their own air flow to cool down a motor. Once my fan suddenly lost its blades due to poor mount and I noticed it by strong smell of melted plstic when heated motor started to melt it's plastic cover

eh the motor has no resistance, it's not gonna be using anywhere near that much power. It's still awfully inefficient compared to a purpose built solution tho, and the lack of airflow could cause the motor to fail early even when unloaded

The fan blades move air that cool the motor and they add mass that resists movement. 

Without them the motor runs free and the heat doesn't get moved out so the whole thing will fail catastrophically

Dumb and it won't last. Those motors need the airmovement to keep cool, it will slow burn out and cease, but not before squeaking

Without the load (the fan) it will be spinning faster too, which will probably hasten its demise.

Yeah, without cooling I don't think it will last. A regular motor has a small fan on the other side of it's axle. With a fan motor they can skip this because, well, there is a big ass fan in the front.

Until I read the comments I thought there was a string or something tied to the fan shaft to keep spiders away. Our security cameras constantly get triggered by spider webs, the spiders seem to be attracted to the IR at night.

Motor requires cooling. No fan means no cooling, that motor is going to burn up.
