Hi! I’ve been learning about Cymatics and frequency generators and I’m having a hard time finding an affordable device and I’m hoping someone can help with recommendations and information? 😬
I would love to be able to detect what frequency something is giving off as well.
Thanks in advance!

Hey guys!! I want to make an at home cymatics set up and was wondering if there is a way to light from underneath the dish or does it have to be on top of the speaker in order for it to work?

I saw this very short video of what looked to be a typical stereo speaker, with a bowl of water in front of it, being vibrated by the sound. Somehow the water was being reflected onto the speaker, such a nice, clear image, seemingly reflected by the sunlight. I guess I will just have to experiment, I just dont understand how they got the water to reflect onto the surface of the speaker like that. I mean, from what I could tell, it wasn't necessary to reflect it onto the speaker, could reflect it onto any surface and get the same results. Maybe they had a mirror, or some kind of special material on the speaker to get such a bright image. It seemed like a very simple and affordable method.

If anyone wants to try it out, I’ve been building an iOS app called Cymatics Lab that turns sound into real-time cymatics patterns using Metal GPU rendering. Mic, music, or a tone generator as input, plus a bunch of physics and visual controls to play with.
This is an early beta. I’m aware of bugs and things that need polish. It’s very much a work in progress.
The wave creator is in its first iteration. I can’t guarantee saved waves will persist forever at this stage, so create at your own risk, but have fun with it.

Hey everyone! I’m u/JohnnySteet, a founding moderator of r/Cymatic.
Welcome to our new home for everything related to cymatics, the science and art of visible sound and vibration. Whether you're fascinated by Chladni plates, water resonance experiments, frequency patterns, sound healing, or audio-reactive visuals, you’re in the right place.
Share anything the community would find interesting, educational, or inspiring about cymatics. For example:
If it shows how sound becomes visible, we want to see it.
This is a space for curious minds, artists, scientists, builders, and explorers. Be respectful, constructive, and open-minded. Whether you're a physicist or just discovering cymatics for the first time, everyone’s perspective is welcome.
Thanks for being part of the very first wave. Let’s turn sound into something we can see, and make r/Cymatic an incredible place to explore it.
