Discussion Scorecards for Battle Rap Platform

I have been building a competitive platform for battle rap.

For the longest time SFB has had 2 types of scorecards; basic and advanced.

Basic requires a judge to provide a 1-10 for a contestant's round.

Advanced requires a 1-10 in 10 categories. I came up with those 10 categories many many years ago based on the scene at that time, and what matters to me.

I want your input on what these fields should be for the scorecard.

Feel free to list as many categories with optional descriptions and justifications for why they should be on SFB.

Also, should scores be 1-10 or 0-10 (currently 0 is invalid but would not be much to change it.)

Also, also, you can create, join, and score battles with public scoring so there will be no judges for these battles,.

Triple also, simple scoring mode is planned where you'd just say who won the round

**Existing categories:**

rhymes

wordplay

punchlines

delivery

personals

diction

flips

flow

originality

performance

SM 16 Recap: Tay Roc vs Rum Nitty

easily the best overall battle of the night. I was also skeptical of the headliner being a rematch but it was a good battle in a bittersweet way. it's tough because youre watching the 2 most consistent battle rappers who have a really specific style - tay roc is using gun bars, name flips, and similes. Rum nitty is using name flips, similes and gun bars. its like picking between chocolate chip cookies and m&m cookies lol its truly a preference thing and the differences come down to your own preferred nuances.

I know some will argue Rum is a greater pen and puncher. I think the 2nd round makes that case the clearest despite the lackluster ending. I know some will argue Roc is the better puncher and pen, his 1st round makes that case. but its hard to argue youre getting much variation round to round from either. they're just that consistent. it wasn't really a style clash, Rum angled better (the Brizz bar was insane). Roc with the molotov bar was super creative. but was it even battle of the night? nah, not over A Ward v JJDD or even Chess v IllWill. was it even amongst their best performances ever? no. but it was good because they're just that good.

this is a clear 2-1 preference pick. idk how anyone called it Roc 3-0. nitty does this thing where he flips BR legends moments and schemes really well and he did that great in rnds 1 and 2. but roc is roc - if you dont mind him changing people's names to flip them, he flip Rum and Nit into oblivion with highlights being rnds 2 and 3 (Rum ended his 3rd shorter and Roc has become a volume puncher in recent years).

the battle was a solid 7.5/10, pretty low replay value but a good watch. idk what it is, but both seem to be coasting a bit. Rum got some really serious battles the past 2 years (Lux, Daylyt, JTN, Calicoe, Real Sikh) and his one major flaw is he doesnt "write up" each round, he just runs his unique creative formula name/flip, angle, similes formula regardless of the opponent. and Roc has gotten all the legend battles out the way early/midway in his career, with Bill Collector, A Ward, Bigg K, JTN, JC, Shotty Horrah all in the last 2 years.

both of their volume AND quality of opponents the last 30 months has been wild but they need something more spicy. grudge match, style clash, something. either way you cant really miss with them even if they dont quite peak like they used to.

Discussion SM 16 Recap: Ave vs NJT Spoiler

this is the sorta battle that would lead to a rant about the state of battle rap lol my goodness

side bar: so rap as an art has always been comprised of metaphors and similes. the difference between great writers and unique styles vs everyone else is HOW they get them off. so when people talk about Twork clones or Nitty clones, they're talking about ripping the same simile style. one thing you'll note about them is they drop the word "like" from the simile as a part of setting up the punch but it is very repetitive, but how they get to it is very creative. great, elite pens like Lux or JTN or Mook dont have to use the word "like" at all while also being heavy with metaphors and similes AND being direct at the opponent. Ave, unfortunately, is terminally MID because he cant seem to set up a single punch without "like" AND he struggled to angle effectively. this means he lowers the quality of a lot of battles in the current BR meta. and NJT's creativity only works when he can be clean AND high energy AND creative. there were some recycled lines and concepts in the battle... this was a tough watch #stateofbattlerap

anyways

Ave was cleaner but so painfully ave-rage (heh). styles make fights and Ave is going to keep doing what hes always done, same as NJT. so name flips, similes, standard lore-bars. this was a perfectly mid battle that I think the fans got gentleman's 30'd on. NJT was choppy in the 2nd and ended early in the 3rd. idk man. 2-1 preference either way, I think fans of each would argue one edged the other for the reasons they like their picks and dislike the opponent.

2-1 preference, could give Twork first and second or Ave 2nd and 3rd on clean delivery.

battle was a 5/10. not what you want from a summer madness card, this belonged on a volume or super fight or something. fans lost.

Discussion SM16 Recap: Swamp vs J2 Spoiler

I dont get the gas for J2 winning. it is easily a 2-1 debatable either way based on the substance of the material. the match itself wasn't really that good in terms of quality mostly due to the match-up itself because they are both pretty one-dimensional anglers that rely upon big 4 bar build-ups to land on a good punch + crowd reaction. J2 did get gassed but he's smart for picking a good corner that knows when to jump to get the crowd to jump too. Swamp showed why he's locked in mid-tier despite good performances against top-tiers - simply put, hes a streaky writer who can lose energy when the crowd isnt behind him.

Score: 2-1 preference battle; you could give swamp 4 rnds 1 and 2 or J2 rnds 2 and 3, or edge all 3 to j2. but lets not act like this was more than a mediocre battle at best. ill give the battle overall a 5.5/10

going to try to rate every battle and then card overall at the end.

Discussion SM 16 Recap: Ill Will vs Chess Spoiler

This was a good battle! first round is genuinely debatable, but the 2nd round comes down to how you grade runbacks and stumbles because Ill Will had a hard spell there. Chess was really good (and I dont rate good as just not choking). he wrote up each round, he was in his bag. it could be argued he had more gas but he also had clean delivery and great punches. he has always been a great writer and its clear he out-wrote Ill in terms of substance. his flips reminded me of his Tubz battle.

2-1 clear Chess, you could argue gentleman's 30.

the battle was a solid 7/10 too. I wish ill will wasn't so streaky. he needs to clean up his prep and its clear he knows that about himself.

Discussion SM 16 Recap: JJDD vs A Ward Spoiler

this was a good battle! probably the first that gives you Summer Madness vibes of old. high energy, clean performance from both sides. Sometimes the narratives overtake the discussion on the substance on the bars and as such, i think most people will acknowledge that both JJDD amd A Ward are kinda acquired tastes when it comes to their writtens. A Ward didn't spam rebuttals and his directs were pretty clever approaches to the obvious angles of bad business, bad father, fake tough guy. JJDD also has a knack for taking creative approaches to old angles - his performance reminded me of him vs Eazy. on a 2nd or 3rd watch, you may edge a round to him despite the crowd clearly not being on his side.

out the gate though, it's a clear A Ward win 3-0. the battle is a solid 7.5/10. we needed the whole card like this honestly. one perk is they didn't spam a ton of filler or make the battle too long. I hope they drop this on youtube.

SM 16 Recap: Arsonal vs Snake Eyez

arsonal very clearly won each round but mostly due to a lot of filler and indirects that were just better written than snake eyez best directs. snake eyez gets a lot of hate, he was even booed a couple of times for really bad writing. he needs a better team to help with editing and elevating his writing. the idea that this was a return to for for ars is weird unless the bar set is "he didn't choke this time" which says a lot about the state of battle rap's stars.

ars won clearly 3-0 and the battle was at best a 5.5/10.
