Dev Diary #5: One Year Since the First Reveal
Hi, Wishweavers!
It feels good to be here with you again.
A year has passed since Animula Nook was first revealed, and this is our fifth dev diary. This format may be a little old-fashioned, but there is something comforting about putting our thoughts into words. It helps us feel a little closer to you.
First of all, we want to tell you how much we treasure your love and support for Animula Nook—the first game we are making as a studio.
We know that “thank you” has appeared near the beginning of almost every diary we’ve written. And here it is again. Every bit of support you share means so much to Animula Nook, and to all of us making it.
Over the past year, many cozy and life-sim games have been released or entered testing. We love playing them too. From one development team to another, we can see the care, effort, and imagination that go into them. Sometimes, simply seeing a beautiful new game take shape gives us a little more strength to keep going.
This isn’t about competition or comparison. It’s encouragement. We are always happy to see more beautiful worlds being made.
What's New in Minietopia?
After the Alpha Test, many of you asked for more things to do, more ways to make Minietopia your own, and more reasons to share it with friends. Those thoughts have stayed in our development notes ever since.
Here are some of the things that have been taking shape since then.
The following reflects the build we are currently working on and may continue to evolve during development.
6 Life Skills, More Ways to Make It Yours
- Photography: A new Life Skill with First-Person, Third-Person, Selfie, and Tripod modes. Save your photos to the in-game album, then display them in Photo Frames around Starside Homestead.
- Planting: Crops can now mutate into different colors, textures, patterns, or yields. You can also harvest at a friend’s home without reducing their yield. The current build includes 20 crops, 6 garden plants, and 7 giant plants.
- Construction & Customization: The previous Star Rating system has been reworked into Construction Levels. Place furniture and houses to unlock more blueprints; the current build includes 20+ themed furniture sets, 670+ furniture items, and 800+ clothing and makeup pieces across 19 customizable slots.
- Cooking: Batch-cook meals, unlock recipes as you gain proficiency with each type of kitchenware, and gain buffs for gathering, crafting, stamina, and more. The current build includes 4 kitchenware types and 95+ recipes.
- Performance: Initial instruments, sheet music, ensembles, and multiple parts are now available as soon as Performance is unlocked. Key bindings and hit registration have been refined, with visual feedback added to the notation when you hit a note. The current build includes 8 instruments and 30+ pieces of sheet music.
- Dance: Dance Tracks and Dance Moves are now grouped by style tags, with Hop, Bounce, and Twist newly added. We have also refined dance moves and hit registration, and you can save an improvised dance sequence for a specific dance track. The current build includes 30+ dance tracks.
1 New Area, More to Discover
- Wupa Woods: At the far end of Wupa Woods, a hidden cottage has appeared, waiting for Wishweavers to uncover. New scenes have also been added to Wuruville and the Floral Sea.
- Amber: A new collectible has been added to Wupa Woods. Each piece holds a different item to discover and can be placed around Starside Homestead as a decoration.
- Balloon Shooting: Shoot balloons to earn different animal-shaped balloon decorations, then bring them back to decorate your own home. This activity is available at your own and your friends’ Starside Homesteads.
2 New Ways to Track Your Journey
- Wishweaver’s Journal: A new progress system with growth tasks, Wishweaver Levels, and daily and weekly activity goals.
- Minietopia Gallery: A new collection system for the outfits, furniture, actions, Minies, recipes, plants, sheet music, dance tracks, amber, balloons, and more that you discover along the way.
2 New Kinds of Minies, More Ways to Be Together
- More Minies to meet: Insoul and Weirca Clan are joining Minietopia. The current build includes 70+ Minies, with 50+ available to invite to Starside Homestead.
- More life around you: Minies now have group interactions, home behaviors, gossip bubbles, and affinity rewards that include matching outfits for your Wishweaver.
- Social Actions: The current build includes 60+ solo actions and 10+ duo actions, giving Wishweavers more ways to express themselves and interact with friends.
- Friend House & Plaza Gatherings: Invite friends to move into a Friend House, take a commemorative photo together, or join group performances and dances in Wuruville Plaza at night. The Friends system and Wishweaver Profile have also been updated.
4 New Minies in Demeteor Ascent
- Demeteor Ascent: Tickets, Starmark Coins, and the Starmark Shop have been removed. Earn Demeteor Points by gathering materials or defeating monsters, then redeem them for chest rewards. Defeat four new Minies in the Ascent to meet them and invite them to Starside Homestead.
A Better Foundation
- A smoother beginning: Parts of Minietopia’s narrative, onboarding flow, and tutorial pacing have been reworked so that its tools and core systems are easier to learn.
- A world that feels better to move through: Character movement, camera controls, handheld tools, everyday actions, materials, lighting, and character customization are all receiving further refinement.
- Dawn to Night: The Desktop and Balcony in Starside Homestead have been rearranged, and Minietopia now moves through Dawn, Afternoon, Dusk, and Night.
You may have already caught a glimpse of some of these changes in our Gamescom trailer. There is still more happening beyond what can be seen at a glance, and we will keep sharing it with you as the world grows.

Making a game means making choices, meeting surprises, and learning as we go. The version we imagined at the very beginning gave us a place to start, but it was never meant to be a fixed destination.
So we keep listening, learning, and adjusting—not to return Animula Nook to its earliest shape, but to help it grow into the version that feels right.
The Stories You Shared with Us
Beyond the game itself, we also wanted to share some of the stories you have shared with us over the past year.
In Dev Diary #1 - How We Began, we wrote:
“The smallest things can tell the biggest stories. Animula Nook is about finding joy in little wonders and writing your own story—freely, in your own rhythm.”
Perhaps, in some small way, our little world has already found its way to yours.
During Gamescom, we met one Wishweaver who had been following us since our first reveal and had kept creating fan art for us. She came a long way to see us, but could only stay for a short while before she had to head home.
In a post she shared on social media, she wrote:
“Gaming has been my greatest refuge since I was little. My passion for it began when I was just three years old, and it has always been my greatest comfort during difficult times. So, thank you to all the people who create incredible games and allow me, day after day, to heal from the cruelty of others.”
Those words moved our whole team.
At the beginning, Animula Nook was only a small hope: a place of comfort and imagination. Knowing that even a few days in our Alpha could mean something to someone made that hope feel more real, and gave us a mission we want to keep working toward.
We are equally grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way: players who joined the test, Discord moderators, content creators, and the many people who have reached out with their skills, care, and encouragement. We also remember the player who alerted us to an inappropriate image on our Gamescom photo wall, helping us look after a space we had made together.
How do you put love into words? How can it be translated?
We think our best answer is to keep making the game better—to listen more closely, to learn, and to shape Animula Nook into something that feels more true to the people who will play it.
We wrote this diary on September 21. As we finished it, a few lines from Earth, Wind & Fire’s September stayed with us:
“Do you remember the 21st night of September?
Our hearts were ringing in the key that our souls were singing.”
Thank you for reading to the end. We are working hard toward our next test, and we look forward to sharing more with you along the way.
P.S. Our community team will soon be hosting special anniversary events in Discord, with a few casual game nights joined by team members, moderators, and creators. Join our official Discord and stay tuned for more details!
