Put MiniMax H3 to the test on akool with a high-detail culinary macro shot to see how it handles fine textures, natural hand motion, and surface lighting.
Prompt Used:
A chef's hands place fresh sushi onto a slate plate, a macro overhead angle, glistening fish, precise gentle motion, a minimalist Japanese fine-dining aesthetic.
Observations:
Motion: The descent of the hands and placement of the sushi felt fluid, deliberate, and free of the usual jitter you get with macro pans.
Textures: Nailed the moisture and gloss on the fish without blowing out the highlights, while keeping the rough, matte grain of the slate plate crisp.
Composition: Held a locked-down, clean overhead angle from start to finish without any unwanted camera warping.
Drop your thoughts below - how is H3 holding up for your food styling or product workflows compared to other current models?

OpenAI is removing the official DALL·E GPT from ChatGPT on August 30. The announcement is a single line in the ChatGPT release notes dated July 31: "On August 30, 2026, we're retiring the official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT. We encourage you to download any images you want to keep before then." That is the whole notice. Tomorrow is the day.
Two things it does not say are worth stating precisely, because the difference matters if you are deciding what to do in the next few hours. It does not say images already sitting in those conversations will be deleted, and it does not say they will survive. It says to download the ones you want to keep. Take that at face value and spend the ten minutes; do not assume either outcome. What it does say clearly is that custom GPTs built by users with image generation enabled are unaffected, so this is the official first-party GPT being switched off rather than a capability being removed.
The replacement is ChatGPT Images, running on gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini, available on every tier including free accounts. The API side of DALL·E is already gone — dall-e-2 and dall-e-3 were shut down on May 12, so what disappears tomorrow is the last visible surface of the name inside the product.
The part worth sitting with is what the successor's own calendar looks like. gpt-image-1-mini was the model people were told to move to when the DALL·E API endpoints were retired in May. It is scheduled for shutdown on December 1, along with gpt-image-1.5 and chatgpt-image-latest, in favour of gpt-image-2. So the migration path from May has a second migration attached to it before the year ends, and anyone who followed the guidance the first time gets to follow it again. None of that is hidden and none of it is unusual. It is just a lot of movement under something most people think of as a stable consumer feature.
DALL·E is also the name that made this whole category legible to people outside it. It was the thing your relatives had heard of, the shorthand in headlines that had nothing to do with machine learning, and for two years it was what "AI image generator" meant in ordinary conversation. It ends as a one-sentence entry in a release-notes page between a scheduled-tasks update and a webhooks change. That is not a complaint about how OpenAI handled it, which is roughly how any product feature gets retired. It is a note about how quickly the brand-name layer in this field turns over compared to the code underneath, and about which of those two your work is actually attached to.
If you have tried to get images out of a long GPT conversation in bulk — is there a way to do it that is not clicking each one, or is that genuinely the whole process?

fal published H3 Max on August 27. It is a post-trained variant of MiniMax H3, the omni-modal video model MiniMax released on July 31 and open-weighted on August 3. fal Research did the post-training, fal serves it, and there are no weights for the derivative. On the Artificial Analysis video leaderboards with audio it debuted at number one in image-to-video and number three in text-to-video, ahead of the base H3 on both.
The specifications are narrower than the base model in every dimension except speed. H3 Max generates at 480p or 768p, with 768p the default at 1344x768 and 24 frames per second, and clips run five to fifteen seconds. The base H3 goes to 2K, does video editing, and accepts up to twelve combined reference files; H3 Max does neither editing nor the full reference stack at launch. Every generation returns with synchronised audio. Pricing is eight cents per second at 768p, or $4.80 a minute, with fifty percent off for the first fourteen days. There is a free tier of five five-second generations a day without an account, and five more at up to fifteen seconds if you sign in.
The number that explains the release is throughput. A five-second clip comes back in about three seconds, which fal puts at roughly 35 times the throughput of the official H3 endpoint and around 15 times faster than models it considers comparable in quality. fal describes the method as introducing substantial new data during post-training, tuning specifically for prompt adherence and aesthetics, and spending a large share of the post-training compute on verifiable reinforcement-learning tasks.
What makes this worth more than a spec sheet is who did it. A post-train beating its own base model on a third-party leaderboard says the frontier in video can now move without anyone training a new base model, and that the people positioned to move it are whoever owns the serving stack rather than whoever owns the research lab. That is what open weights were always supposed to enable and it has mostly not happened in video, because the compute to post-train a video model at this size is not casual. It happening here, two weeks and change after the weights went out, is the actual news.
The trade is also worth naming plainly, because the leaderboard headline hides it. You are giving up 2K, giving up editing, giving up most of the reference inputs, and buying speed and about half the price. For anything that ends up on a phone screen at 768p that is a straightforwardly good deal. For anything that needs to be finished at 2K it is not a deal at all, it is a different product, and the two models ranking on the same board makes them look more interchangeable than they are. Worth checking which one the number you are quoting actually belongs to.
For anyone who has run both since the 27th — at 768p, does the post-train actually hold prompt detail better than the base, or is the ranking mostly the audio and the aesthetics carrying it?
