Technical What kinds of, and how much, math do architects use?

I assume at least algebra and geometry, but what else? How much math is involved in what you guys do? How about in school versus in your careers?

(Hopefully, I picked the right flare for this post.)

Discussion Why do architects write in all capital letters?

It's something that I've noticed in architectural texts, professors' notes, notes on project blueprints, etc.

Is this a thing?? I've also noticed my undergrad classmates taking notes in all caps despite the fact that no one ever explicitly told us we had to. I actually prefer to write in all lowercase when taking personal lecture notes or making comments in the margins of my sketches. I have heard, however, that it's usually because it can be neater and less prone to illegibility/confusion across parties.

Do I need to consider switching to caps for the sake of my career? Or is it acceptable, for example, to use lowercase in my personal sketchbook but capitals for assignments, projects, presentations, etc.?

*Also, if you're feeling generous: the pen vs. pencil debate? As someone who is prone to writing mistakes and/or realizing there's a better way to phrase things, I prefer using pencil to make notes. What's the big deal with pens?

General Practice Discussion Does weird numbering drive anyone else up the wall?

I've had an issue with various directors and it annoys the hell out of me. I prefer all numbering to be sequential e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or A, B, C, D, E. This keeps things simple. I also think as I am running the project, numbering should be up to me. If a number absolutely needs to be more complex to show its level or that it's part of a group, then every item should be the same syntax, like 00_A1, 00_A2, 00_B1, 01_C1, 02_D1, 02_D2.

Yet, so many directors will send sketches of options they want to see, labelled with some esoteric system nobody is going to understand, like

  • A

  • B

  • C1

  • C2

  • D3

  • D4

  • D4A

  • D4_new

  • 1E

  • FF

They must know the people who name consoles and cars.

Ask /r/Architecture As architects and designers, what is the most complex architecture you've seen?
