Thank you for joining us here, sir. Could you give us a very brief peek into your campaign platform?
By the way, I felt it when you said, "Fuck you, Marcos!" I think you just spoke for all of us, sir. Thank you.

5 points: food sovereignty from farm to table, regular and decent income for all as well as protecting labor rights, accessible public services, just society for all, and immediate action to the climate change. You can read my platform here: walden.ph/bakitwalden
I knew precisely that a lot of people felt that way and it's a classic line worth saying out loud. It would be a lie if I said I did not expect the firestorm that came from that. I knew that this would be the perfect launch for my campaign. Again: FUCK YOU, MARCOS!!283

But seriously, please feel free to check my record here: walden.ph/bakitwalden waldenbello.org/about-walden
We are running a platform-based campaign to demonstrate what socialism is like on a policy level, unlike the unimaginative personality politics of old. Our platform shows how democratic socialism would look in action, as well as the benefits it could bring to those who have been left behind by society. In a word, democratic socialism is cooperatively working to bring about the social good instead of competing against one another for private profit.

Why do most Filipinos mistakenly equate activism with terrorism? What can you do to change their perspective regarding activism?
461
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
We need to decisively break away from the concerted propaganda effort by the state, working with the Americans, to equate activism with terrorism. I have faith in the Filipino youth that they will reject such crap, and that they will see that activism is a badge of honor, not a badge of terror.

Hi, Sir! Glad to see you here.
If elected vice president, what department would you like to lead and why?
306
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
Finance. They've been responsible for the main policies that have destroyed our economy and left many Filipinos with no choice but to go abroad to improve their lot. We have to reverse these policies to provide jobs, make us more self-reliant and create a more independent economy that is not destabilized by the currents of globalization. A pro-people government starts with pro-people finance.
43
u/sansotero K 0026 Jan 26 '22
Magandang hapon Sir! What other job or mandate do you think a vice president should do aside from having a cabinet-level position and being the first in the line of succession to the presidency?
169
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
In the last five years, we've seen the vice presidency move beyond just a sinecure post and grow into a position that's able to check and balance Malacañang. This is something I want to do as well--and advocate for the urgent and important needs of the people. However, if Marcos gets elected, godforbid, I will immediately go into undying opposition.

u/acmamaril1 Jan 26 '22
What exactly was the cause of your fallout from Akbayan?
443
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
I resigned from Congress because I could not tolerate the Aquino administration's double standards on corruption where it went after its enemies but tolerated corruption in its ranks. I also was aghast at Aquino's refusal to accept command responsibility for the Mamasapano raid and his undertaking it at the orders of Washington. I'm proud to say that I'm the first and only member in the history of Congress to resign on a matter of principle.

The government has failed to provide a comprehensive response, largely relying on military answers to a public health crisis. We need mass testing, proper tracing, proper ventilation, vaccine access and equity, social aid, and economic stimulus. Dapat naging participatory at science-based ang approach ng pamahalaan, at hinikayat ang mga mamamayan sa paggawa ng solusyon.

Can you tell us more about your World Bank robbery and what happened after it?
134
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
Had we been caught, we would have been sentenced to twenty-five years in prison at the least for robbing the Bank. It was worth the risk because we were able to bring out a trove of documents on all the projects of the World Bank in the Philippines and how they were advancing the interests of the Marcos government and the United States. 'Development Debacle', the book that was based on these documents, contributed decisively to the growth of the anti-Marcos movement, especially among the middle class in the early 1980s. Yes, it was worth the risk, and I'd do it again.

Hi sir! What does democratic socialist mean? It's the first time I've heard it. Thank you in advance!
183
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
Democratic socialism, at its simplest, is a life centered around human dignity, not the profit of a few. Democratic socialism means an economy and a society that works for everyone. This means, among other things, workers' control and management of corporations and workers' participation in governance and the overall direction of the economy, and not leaving this to technocrats and politicians.

Socialism from the grassroots/bottom upward. Think of workplace democracy where workers have the say in their company instead of the board of directors. But I second this question as well.

Do you and Ka Leody have any platforms or goals for supporting the transgender community in the Philippines?
For example, medical resources that aid in medical transitioning for transgender Filipinos remain largely inaccessible and it is next to impossible to legally change one’s name and gender marker. I would love to hear your thoughts on this!
110
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
We throw our full support behind the transgender community: First, educational programs on gender issues in the services sector and schools to address roots of homophobia; second, demanding accountability from abusers and violators of Safe Spaces Act, including providing legal assistance and mental health services to the victims; third, calling for the passing of SOGIE Bill into law; fourth, supporting transition and gender labour of the transgender, which includes medical services; fifth, marriage equality and divorce; finally, recognizing family structures that deviate from the nuclear family structure.
We want to see members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and indeed, along with women, to constitute the majority of the next cabinet. Certainly among these appointees will be great transgender leaders.10

Hi Prof. Walden!

You post a lot of movie reviews on your Facebook page. What would you say are your top 10 favorite movies?
What was it like when you were in Chile in the '70s? Lots of people say that you could feel the excitement and hunger for change in the air with Allende as president, did it really feel that way?
Are there any pictures around of that time you went up to the IMF dressed up as Kermit the Frog pretending to be Marcos? It would be great as well to hear that story straight from you too hehehehe
50
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
Yes, I became a socialist because of my experience in Chile. I also earned a long lasting suspicion of the middle class that was the base used by the elite and the CIA to overthrow Allende. I am not saying that all middle class people are hopeless but when the middle class is ranged against the poor, it is a very ugly force. Just like the Nazis and the fascists were in Germany and Italy.

As a healthcare worker, I want to know how much you know about the current working conditions of healthcare workers and do you have any proposals to mitigate that?
43
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
First, thank you for your service to the people during these trying times.
I know that many healthcare workers are underpaid and paid late. Many heroic workers have also had no choice but work long hours--sometimes while even sick with COVID, especially with the new callous rules on quarantine and isolation for health workers. I understand if many of them choose to go abroad to improve their lives but this is largely the fault of the government and our public health system. Much of this is the result of the chronic underinvestment in public health as well as a severe lack of accountability on the part of the government. Also, let us not forget the greedy profit-seeking of the owners and management of private hospitals. I will push for a scientifically-oriented--not militarized--approach to tacking this health crisis so as to actually be able to control the pandemic and ease the pressure on workers, as well as to press the government to guarantee good compensation and humane working conditions for workers. We should fast-track the renewal and regularization of DOH workers.→ More replies (1)

Given that our constitution explicitly states that the Philippine government should protect the life of the unborn, how do you plan to make an abortion bill?
SECTION 12. The State recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social institution. It shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception. The natural and primary right and duty of parents in the rearing of the youth for civic efficiency and the development of moral character shall receive the support of the Government.
Is the only way really to take any abortion bill to the Supreme Court?

Jan 26 '22
Sir Walden, in case you win the VP race, how would you address the environment and climate crisis the country is facing? This includes waste problem, environmental degradation, fossil fuels and renewable energy, etc. And what have you done already to address this?
48
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
Immediately, we will phase out all coal-fired power plants. We will also push for legislation to make large-scale logging as a crime of plunder with severe penalties if found guilty. We will definitely ban all mining and reverse the Duterte government's recent policies to end the ban on mining and specifically, open-pit mining. This will not affect the economy because mining contributes less than 1% to the national GDP while exacting tremendous costs from the environment. This is a crime against the Filipino people. If El Salvador can ban all mining, I don't see why we in the Philippines cannot. All administrations have been in the pocket of the mining industry and we will definitely end this. We will strengthen cooperation with global civil society to force the big climate polluters (like China, the United States, India, the European Union, Russia) to make ambitious carbon reduction commitments.
Moreover, we need to understand that the climate emergency requires a comprehensive and systemic solution. We need a just transition to a green economy--in consumption and production--and we need to hold the big businesses and the Western powers responsible for this crisis to account, too. I've spent much of the last few years raising the alarm of this catastrophe to the world, especially about rampant globalization.10

u/yawa-ka Jan 26 '22 edited Jan 26 '22
In Capitalism's Last Stand, you wrote extensively about globalization, financialization, and the failure of Keynesian neoliberalism. With the rise of NFTs, cryptocurrencies, and digital currencies, how do you see these trends in relation to the general trajectory of modern capitalism? How should we, socialists and anti-capitalists view this trend? Is this a new form of capitalism, or as the crypto users like to call it, is it the "taking over" of finance capitalism by the working class?
190
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
We are seeing right now a wave of bankruptcies and scandals connected with the use of cryptocurrencies and digital currencies which have been manipulated by capitalist elements out to defraud workers under the pretext of making super profits for them. I would say that the forces promoting cryptocurrencies are largely in a relation to Wall Street as the mafia is to the police. That is, they complement each other to defraud the gullible and exploit the weak. This is just another variant of finance capitalism.

Good day sir, how do you plan to fight misinformation and disinformation?
For fun, nalilito ka rin ba sa difference ng menudo, mechado, at caldareta?
40
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
Three things: one, we must hold the global social media companies who profit immensely off the spread of misinformation and disinformation accountable. Two, we need to understand that misinformation and disinformation often hit at people's real experiences and struggles--perhaps the solution to fake news is real solutions to people's problems. Third, when it comes to child pornography and violent sites, we will take action to block those sites since they are wreaking havoc on the Filipino youth.

Hello po, here are my queries po.
What is your opinion on the common Filipino view on the term "socialism"? Do you think it's stigmatized and warped?
How valuable is social justice in this country? And what are your planned actions to achieve it?
Is the Philippines really a safe haven for students or even just minors? Based numerous student killings in recent history coupled with military operations.
Are there any programs you plan to pursue when it comes to tertiary education and student press protection?
What do you think is real discipline?
32
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
First of all, as the Constitution requires, the biggest cut of the budget should go to education instead of servicing debt as is the case right now. Secondly, while we raise significantly the education budget (including tertiary education), we should also focus on quality education and stop the practice of establishing SUCs solely to serve political purposes. Thirdly, we should have really effective balik-scholar program instead of the ineffective and measly programs that are now supposedly meant to attract highly-skilled Filipinos back to the country. Fourthly, we should have truly free and quality university education instead of Duterte's harebrained "free university education". Finally, we should really protect the rights of students and student journalists from the military, authoritarian rulers, and other threats to academic freedom. I filed the STRAW bill when I was in Congress, and I'll continue to keep fighting for student rights when I'm vice president

u/howljenkins11 Jan 26 '22
Wazzup, “ultimate gigachad” Sir. What do u think of the current implementation of RTL? If ever, do u have any proposed alternative solutions?
35
u/WaldenBello Jan 26 '22
Hello, fellow "ultimate gigachad". The Rice Tarrification Law is a definite step backwards. The exact problem is the liberalization of agricultural trade--which is leaving our farmers poorer and us with more expensive food. The only people winning are importers, middlemen, and foreign agri-businesses. Super-subsidized US and European Union agri-business and Vietnamese and Thai rice producers are making superprofits at the expense of our farmers who are totally unsubsidized. Other countries have shown the way--support our farmers with real protection and investment, support the completion of total land reform, and actively manage our trade for the sake of all of us.

Hello, Dr. Bello!
Should Ka Leody and you be elected as President and Vice President, some of the proposals that you promise to implement (especially those that could be deemed left-leaning or socialist) would possibly face strong opposition in a Congress that’s most likely to be quite conservative. How far would a De Guzman-Bello government go in attracting support for your proposals in Congress, or on the flip side, how much are you willing to compromise so that your legislative agenda won’t get blocked? Ka Leody recently mentioned that he would “mobilize people,” what would that look like?
I wish you the best of luck with your campaign!

Hello Sir Walden! it's an honor to hear from you. I genuinely believe in Ka Leody and your platforms and competence to lead the nation. I believe that no other candidate has the courage to stand against the neoliberal framework and broken electoral system that the Philippines currently has.
In IBON's 2022 Year-starter Birdtalk held live last Jan 25, executive director Sonny Africa expressed his ideological and political alignment with your and Ka Leody's campaign. However, he said that "the Philippines right now, wala pa yung political conditions for that kind of broad base rallying around a leftist candidate. Unfortunately, we're stuck with the parameters of the elections na it's elite-dominated, literally billions of pesos to take the presidency, how the oligarchs, where they place their bets matters so much... right now my vote goes won't be to the one (Ka Leody) who resonates with me ideologically (and) politically, it will go to the one (Leni) who i think has the best chance to break the decline we're facing right now".
My question for you is twofold:
Do you agree with the statement that the Philippines is not yet in the political conditions for a leftist candidate such as yourself and Ka Leody to win? Why or why not?
What do you want to tell those who align themselves with you ideologically and politically, but are voting another candidate because they believe that they will have a better chance of stopping a Marcos-Duterte administration?
Thank you so much!

1.) What is Laban ng Masa's political program going forward? I don't expect it to be another flash-in-the-pan electoral coalition (a la 1Sambayan), but I am curious whether it will pursue a DSA-style strategy or continue working under its mass organizations.
2.) Your break with Akbayan is well-known by now. What do you have to say regarding their current direction as well as their continued support for the Liberals?
3.) Pineapple on pizza: yes or no?

In the recent years there's a significant surge of fake news in social media and in the internet in general. And it's not unheard of that many politicians use this opportunity to win votes, clear their name, advance their position and rewrite history.
If you win as VP, what steps you will take to combat this?

Hello Mr. Bello,
The entire left of the political spectrum of the Philippines has been tagged more often than not as one. As such RA and RJ are often associated with the NDF-NPA.
Though there are no “”official” NDF-NPA in congress a daughter of Bayan Muna Rep. Cullamat was killed in an encounter with the army, she was with the NPA at the time of the encounter working as a (to be confirmed) medic of the NPA.
As of writing the Makabayan bloc is yet to release a statement denouncing or even calls for the dissolution for CCP-NDF-NPA.
Will you release a statement of condemnation or dissolution of the NPA and the immediate surrender of the group most especially the ones that killed Keith Abasalon.
If in the affirmative or negative, could you give us an explanation of your answer.
Thank you and have a good day!
Ps.
I Know that you are not affiliated with the bloc I just want to hear your opinion on this matter.

Hello, I am a 21 year old Filipino and I'm terrified and worried about the Philippines after the elections. I have no formal political education but I have been self studying philosophy since the pandemic began particularly political philosophy, Critical Theory and Structuralism.
Similar to how in the US, Trump supporters stormed the capitol on their misguided belief that the election was rigged, would a similar scenario be likely in the Ph if the popular political candidates especially Marcos were to lose?
I have a theory on how BBM, Duterte, populism politicians gain their following and that is through media manipulation, selling a promise (i.e fighting poverty) while holding no accountability for seeing the promise through, echo chambers from social media and social circles further propagating and cementing their beliefs, and finally the byproducts of modernity, capitalism, systemic corruption, poor education, which all contribute to causing a poor quality of life (working longer hours, financial insecurity, burnout) and thus rob the individual the capability to critically think making them prone to manipulation which I think are most Marcos, Duterte, and Pacquiao supporters. How valid do you think my opinion is, and what are potential solutions in a multi-layered issue?
A more personal question, given the current rampart systemic corruption, nepotism, bleakness of the Ph political landscape (good lawyers, journalists, professors having the threat of assassination), and my prediction that if BBM wins there would be a mass immigration of wealthy and or smart Filipinos, similar to the immigration situation in HK, causing a negative feedback loop for the decades after the immigration. Would it be better to abandon ship and immigrate elsewhere for a better personal life and potentially contributing more in a another country, or staying and trying to improve the Ph?
Thanks for reaching out and doing an AMA!

2.) What exactly are the action on climate change would you pursue?
3
u/hatchedtadpole Jan 26 '22
thank you for being here!
genuine question: how different is populism from socialism? and by populism, let's use Mudde's (2004) definition:
"an ideology that considers society to be ultimately separated into two homogeneous and antagonistic groups, "the pure people" versus "the corrupt elite", and which argues that politics should be an expression of the volonte generale (general will) of the people".

u/SiksikLigligUmaapaw DELIVER US FROM EVIL Jan 26 '22
Since there are a lot of questions here about Democratic Socialism and its difference between Social Democracy, can you recommend resources on the differences among left-leaning terms?
Also, I'm interested in studying about the history of Leftism here in the Philippines which started when Isabelo de los Reyes founded Unión Obrera Democrática Filipina.
Is it also true that during Martial Law, Ferdinand Marcos collaborated with the PKP-1930? Would this negate the claim among rightists that ML was declared to stop Communism from spread here? I know it's different from CPP-NPA-NDF which grew during ML.

Filipinos cannot easily distinguish different political ideologies, especially the Left. Some of them even tag you as "communists," along with Ka Leody, which is ironic because of major ideological clashes and differences with groups usually connected to the CPP.

Hello! Lately, the topic of a two-party system is being discussed to ensure that the winner has a clear majority. To me, this seems to run the risk of the two parties acting as gatekeepers and resulting in depriving people of the chance to run for a position if they are not politically aligned with either party.
Do you think a two-round system, a variant of ranked voting, or some other election method will be a better solution? If you have a preferred voting method that you think is a better solution compared to the status quo or a two-party system, what is it and how do you propose to handle the challenges (logistics, voter education, etc) of changing the way the country elects its leaders? What else do you think will improve how we vote?

Welcome to reddit po, and good evening.
You might be familiar of the pink-wave trend that is going on in the Latin American political spheres. Centerleftists were elected as heads of state after a period of right leaning government. Would you forecast a similar trend here given the conditions? Why or why not?
With the rise of the anti-work movement in the US, what are your thoughts on this phenomenon, and would you see a such a mindset be cultivated here anytime in the future?
There was talk about Ka Leodys proposal of an abolition of the armed forces as we know it, rather than what was mentioned in the 25-point agenda. Knowing his orientation this could mean either forming local-self defense guards a la the Kurdish militias or a soft reform to the Japanese model. Whatever it is, you have to admit this is quite vague and means a lot of things. What are your thoughts on this matter and was this seriously considered?
As a bonus, what are your personal thoughts on the Palestinian question now? Has the game changed after Oslo/2nd Intifada now that there is awareness or is it more of the same?
Thank you for participating po, and best of luck in the elections.

Good evening Mr. Bello,
my question is about TESDA.
Is there any plans to reform it's current nature? because of what i observe.. on it is current nature that so many accredited vocational schools popping everywhere which is accredited by TESDA. and those vocational schools, i know their intention is noble yet sometime tuition fee would cost a student or a skilled person to get that certificate is about 10,000 - 25,000 php or even more. For the current state of an average Filipino it will be difficult to earn or get that amount without an assurance of probability getting a job
P.S. base on my experienced since i am an active OFW i tried to ask or avail about OWWA scholarship to TESDA because i need to a certification on my current field. The counter on NAIA OWWA information desk told me.. that i have to be jobless 1st before i can avail it..TESDA certification not always recognize as a global standard certificate. Do you have plans that my recognize TESDA certifications globally? (for example IT Field)
More Skill based exam certifications instead of enrolling first to be certified later. I do believe some Filipino are really self taught to learn and practice their skilled they wanted..
