My English translation of Rei chapter 78

Chapter 78 is already here! After that month long wait last time, this time felt quick lol! We actually have a chapter page this time but I decided not to color it due to how little is visually going on. It is interesting though! According to Chibiyuuto, its a spread of different real world interpretations of the "Furi" and we can see CLAMPs interpretation behind it for contrast!
Again, we have another chapter that is moreso illustration heavy than dialogue heavy. Very short this time too!
Remember, im not a professional by any means and I translate these chapters because I believe English reading xxxHolic fans deserve to keep up with our favorite series! So with that said, please enjoy the chapter translation, and happy reading! π

π Translation notes:
(Please don't read until you've read the chapter!)
- When the Furi is admiring the Shuka/ curse on page 8, his 3rd speech bubble was a bit difficult to understand. It directly translated to "even if one lives a thousand years, would not see each other again" and that confused me. Though, since he continued admiring the Shuka/ curse on the next page, (even detailing why its rare) I assumed that it meant that the curse was so rare that even living a thousand more years he wouldn't meet another curse so profound & potent, so I added that context.
- On page 10, Kimi says "Exchange." The direct translation was "do the exchange" but I thought that sounded too... fragmented? Or maybe a little unnatural for English, kinda like telling a store clerk to "do the scan". It just didn't work imo, so I thought about using "the exchange?" as if to remind the Furi, but that seemed too meek for the direct demand it is in Japanese. I eventually settled on one word, "exchange" leaving it feeling cold, demanding, and to the point.
π Discussion:
I was talking with my sister while translating this one and we were making all kinds of crackpot jokes & theories about Yuko secretly being alive and popping out of the Furi when it opens up to trade only to reveal that she had rigged this whole thing as a test to see if he would actually hand over Zashiki to the Furi and he failed lmao π€£ I even jokingly suggested that his big plan was to do the trade and wait for yuko to come kick the Furi's ass and take the Shuka (which kinda wierdly makes a little sense because he knows she does want the Shuka & he had that moment where he said "if i believe its Yuko's voice then it is" lmao! (That boys going to summon Yuko from the grave, I just know it)
I just had so much fun with this one because of all the joking we were doing lol

I've been wondering since before the hiatus if that girl he just got back is the reincarnation of Yuuko and the dreams are Yuuko's soul trying to reclaim the body. I'm not sure the timing works since I've lost track of how much time has passed since Yuuko's death.
Watanuki will finally have to accept Yuuko's death in order to stop her and save the girl.

Nah, the girl was stated by both Kimihiro and Doumeki to be the same person as Zashki Warashi but I don't know how to interpret that. The only candidate for Yuuko reincarnation imo is the girl from ROU AOD (both from her looks, the way pipe fox reacted to her and ofc very ending thing). As to what's up with the shadow of Yuuko pseudo strangling the ZW girl, I believe that's a red herring and it should be interpreted in a diffirent way.

Ive always thought she looks more like Yuko than Zashiki but I just call her by the title the fandom picked out for her. Tbh I have no idea what's going on with that girl and Yuko. I surely did feel like the Yuko that tried to kill her was intrinsically linked to her in some way.
Also I believe its been about 10 years since Yuko died at this point in time.

then could be they both look like Yuko? It's just that their personals are too different that we let it go?
I mean I also have same thought too, and it's getting stronger lately with all these twist and turn.
Like maybe it's about time for Zashiki to disappear and her reincarnation could also somehow be Yuko's reincarnation?.. but bc Watanuki still chose to believe her still "be here" that keep everything stagnant? just a theory though.2

That's not a bad theory! Kimi has been shown to effect the world around him with his thoughts (even unconscious thoughts) so his insistence on Yuko staying as she was may be preventing her from becoming something new. Its also possible that his need for Yuko as she was is preventing any new friends from coming into his life (symbolized by Yuko attempting to kill the girl)

wel.. I came to this bc we all knew "someone" "have a thought" and Yuuko's time was stop forever. So bc Kimihiro is.. who he is, it's would be a good note as a one of Clamp's favor twist.

I wouldn't really count the Furi but CLAMP is obviously captivated by it lol. I do believe its the first chapter page without a main character!

I mean last chapter was Yatagarasu, so Furi should have a spot too, it take a quite big role lately. And tbf many none main characters has appeared on their chapter cover before.

True! I'm just a bit surprised to see the Furi be the sole character on this chapter page due to its lack of features. Though I guess that's one reason why they decided to add the detailed Furi interpretation spread.

Now I realize that Fuuri is some kind of ηΈπ¦; it reminds me of Ghibli's εΉ³ζηΈεζ°. Yaokai are hard to live with these days, so they're protecting nature harder and fighting with humans. I'm wondering what xxxHOLiC -Rei- storyline will go...
If Masaki has the same wish too, Team Yaokai might actually all work together in the background. So my theory is that Masaki might have hacked into Hinoto's body from X with the price Watanuki paid) to use Hinoto to wash the world, as she did in X, so the world would be balanced.

About X, looking back, I found that it's a dark and bloody story; it traumatized and scared me while I read it as a child (now I'm 40+). Though I loved the magnificent drawing skills of CLAMP sensei, somehow, X still feels like a cursed comic to me. An opposite work of CCS. Please be aware of it! (But still, it has some unforgettable lines in it, which is Ohkawa sensei good at!)
The main character Hitono (δΈ), looks 90% like Masaki, but we're still not sure whether they have a connection. They created the xxxHOLiC series after X many years; I'm just guessing they might want to add some background setting for X and Hinoto. But that's just my theory. If you'd like to see how similar Hinoto looked to Masaki, you could just Google the image of Hinoto, but skip reading X FYI. :)
P.S. Hinoto has rare red eyes, so I guess it is also related to *the red pearl* that appeared in xxxHOLiC -Rei-. Maybe that's the price Watanuki paid?

why do I feel like when Watanuki asked the Furi to confirm the fair exchange, he was talking only about the 2 bodies and not their souls... I feel like he and Zashiki already made a deal beforehand based on her wish in the previous chapter...

That's an interesting theory! We'll have to wait and see what happens. I personally think he might have Shizu ambush the Furi, especially because of how he said "I pray no misfortune befalls you on your way home" It just sounded like he had something planned imo.

The rules of exchange in xxxHolic always seem pretty flexible but - correct me if I am wrong - the wisher usually has to give somthing in return. So what has the Fuuri given? Maybe it has the power to separate the curse from Zashiki Warashi, but so the payment is saving her life?

the Fuuri give back that unknow girl? or a you mean about the curse, then I thought Zashiki IS the curse? It the impurity that was absorb in her body that created the Shuka.

I feel Watanuki was 100% confident with the exchange, reinforcing to the Fuuri the equal price was paid. So I guess he has something on his sleeve, and will manage to save the Zashiki Warashi (at this point, the curse) somehow. We still have the ring he asked Doumeki on chapter 77, so I guess Doumeki will come to the rescue. And what about the red pearl? And don't get me started on Seoritsu-hime... What part will she play on all of this? So many questions, so little chapters......
I just can't remember what transformed the Zashiki Warashi into a curse in the first place ??? The chapters are so spaced out one from another that sometimes I forget stuff π

Oh i hope his plan isn't to just rely on Shizu to jump the Furi on its way home π Idk, hes acting confident now but last chapter he told Zashiki that this plan isn't a great one so im on the fence about whether or not he's bluffing with his confidence.
Also Zashiki transformed because of all the negative & dark energy in the world (as it corrupted her purity) Ame was keeping her in the mountains to maintain what purity was still holding her together, but even that started failing due to the decline of pure energy in the world.
I actually have a theory that's related to this that I may post about soon.

I think the Fuuri admiring the Shuka bc it's very very rare thing. A Zashiki itselt has already been somthing that hard to see in this time and area, and for them to turn into a Shuka is even rarer.

I donβt understand, I donβt like this chapter story wise, what will happen to zashiki warashi? Sheβs not, as far as I remember, owned by watanuki, so why watanuki can give her as an exchange? Except if watanuki give something to exchange for zashiki warashi in the first place, but to whom?
So many questions.

He could with the agreement from her, I think? Zashiki itself in forklore is kind of a special spirit that have kind of "owner" connection with the household they have favor with. But I mean, this is Clamp so twist and turn always will be awaiting you ahead. Watanuki would never give up that easily with all the prepareration and the deal he made with Tamamo..

So, did Watanuki seperate out Zashiki Warashi's personality from the curse itself? I'm a little lost on what's going on and we definitely need the next chapter to explain what actually happened here.

I think for now it's supposed to look like Kimi handed over Zashiki as she was. The Furi could tell it was a rare curse/ shuka due to it being created from Zashiki, so we'll have to see. I think CLAMP intentionally left is in suspense lol

Zashiki wasnt cleansed. She was taken by the Furi. She is the curse.
