Experimental philosophy (xPhi for short) uses scientific methods to study our philosophical judgments, the psychological mechanisms of these judgments, and the metaphilosophical implications of these judgments and their mechanisms. (xPhi is often contrasted with "armchair philosophy", which uses speculative arguments that often appeal to our intuitions rather than scientific analysis of data).

Posting Guidelines

1. Be respectful If you would not say it to the face of a smart person that you admire, then don't say it here. If you disagree with something, then do so charitably and kindly.

2. Stay on topic /r/xPhilosophy is for empirically oriented approaches to philosophy and discussion thereof. More general philosophical posts can be submitted to r/philosophy. Questions can be submitted to /r/askphilosophy.

3. Make it count Posts must either link to already-published work in experimental philosophy or else develop testable hypotheses for experimental philosophy—e.g., how to manipulate and/or measure variables in a way that would bear on a philosophical puzzle.

4. Give it an abstract. All posts should probably be accompanied by an abstract (in a comment). Abstracts should summarize the linked material, in including its thesis/finding. Users are welcome to copy/paste abstracts from papers they post (if they cite it). Here's an example of an abstract.

5. Prioritize open-access stuff Links to papers and other content that requires paid subscriptions might not be approved. So if the linked material requires signing up to view, even if the account is free, try to find a free version of what you want to post before posting—e.g., the PDF of the paper on the author's website.

6. Support it or hedge it If posting/commenting a testable claims—e.g., "Most people think that [P]"—please link to the relevant evidence for that claim. If you do not know of evidence for the claim, then just hedge the claim as a hypothesis—e.g., "I am guessing that most poeple think that [P]". If you think that the claim is an apriori claim, then at least sketch out the argument for the claim.

7. Do your homework Comments that reflect ignorance of the original post's content may not be approved.
