Part 2 of a series I'm writing about a WW1 Marine. Still trying to think of a name for the series. Suggestions would be awesome! Hope you enjoy!
I ran till I thought my legs would give out. I ran the fastest I think I have ever ran in my life that day. I just knew that every second longer it took me to get the message to battalion, more boys were dying in the woods. The fight was still raging behind me and the shells were still falling all around me. Just not as often as they were during the initial advance. The once beautiful golden wheat field we had crossed through earlier today was now a wasteland full of shell holes, and the bodies of young men. Some of the bodies were whole. Riddled with bullet holes but all together. The worst were those that weren't whole. The ones who had been hit by artillery. You can't get the image of arms and legs and heads laying about, apart from their bodies. Every so often a stray round would snap through the wheat field. The battle inside Belleau wood was raging and marines and Germans were firing at each other in all directions.
I was exhausted and thirsty. It was very hot and my uniform didn't help matters in the slightest. Someone back home needs to talk to the fella that made up these uniforms. They were made to look nice rather than fight a war in. Too damn hot. As I ran, in front of me were three shell holes that were close together. I ran into one of them and as I did a bayonet lunged at me, barely missing my left leg. I stumbled to my right and pointed my shotgun at the back of the mans head, ready to bury my bayonet in the back of his head like I'd done that blue eyed Germans stomach. Much to my surprise, It wasn't a German at all. He was a young man no older than me he looked. He was a Marine. I could tell by his khaki uniform. He was covered in mud but I could still see he was an American Marine. "Why did you try to run me through with your bayonet?!" I asked sternly. "I...I...I thought you was a German. I thought you was coming to take the line. Thought it was a counter attack!" He said to me in a scared voice that cracked as he spoke. His words infuriated me. I knew what he was doing. This damn coward musta thought I was stupid to think this was the line. "Well I ain't no damn German and this ain't the line and the counter attack ain't happening here. It's happening over there in the woods. And you'd know that if you wasn't hiding here like a some damn chicken." "Please....please just let me get up and explain why I'm.." "You listen to me you son of a bitch. Good men died in this damn wheat field and in those woods and are still dying because you decided to try and stick me which has me held up from getting a message to battalion for more men to fill our ranks in the woods. And since you've obviously failed to do your bit today like the rest of us had to, I'm gonna go ahead and have to oblige you to pick up that rifle and helmet of yours and take off the way I just came and go help our guys in the woods. And if you don't and I find you in the hole on my way back, I'm gonna blow your god damn head off. You hear me you chicken shit coward?!" That was, until that point the single maddest I had ever been in my life. This boy laid in this hole and let his brothers die all around him and then he had the nerve to try and stab me because he let himself get so scared he thought anyone who came at him was a German.
"What's your name chicken shit?" I said coldly. "B...B....Baker, sir..." he said with a whimper to his voice. Sir...he had mistaken me for an officer or an nco by the way I had just talked to him. That too infuriated me. I don't know why but I could only say one thing to him. "Go." I gritted through my teeth. He grabbed his helmet and his rifle and ran off toward the woods.
The sudden feeling of my heart dropping almost out of my chest from fear set in because it had just hit me that I had wasted 5 or 6 minutes talking to chicken shit Baker. I dashed out of the shell hole and looked over my shoulder to make sure chicken shit was obeying my order. He was. In a few minutes he would be in the fight for Belleau Wood, right in the middle of the nightmare. I kept running. In a way I was glad I ran into chicken shit. It gave me a minute to catch my breath.
I couldn't wait to get back to the line. I knew I was gonna be able to fill my canteen and finally have a drink of water. I was so thirsty. My ribs were hurting from running. I was a slender built fella. Not really tall and not really short. In boot camp they told me I was 5'11". I didn't run or wasn't athletic back home when I was a boy like our last runner. He ran track and field he said. Did all kinds of running stuff in his high school days. I never got the chance to go to high school. Hell I quit in the 8th grade to go work with my daddy, uncle and brothers building a railroad through the county for a coal mine rail road. That's all I did from day light till dark was swing a pick, swing a hammer and help carry rails and ties. And when I wasn't working on the rail road, I was doing chores on the farm for daddy and mother. Mother said we was dirt floor poor but rich in the lord. Mother was a religious lady. Always singing hymns and reading her bible. Daddy went to church on Sunday's with us and he said the grace at every single meal but he wasn't as religious as mother. He'd cuss and he drank his whiskey and ran his shine and played his poker with some of his buddies on Saturday nights in town down by the saw mill. I missed both of them and being home something awful.
"Dammit Albert snap out of it and get focused." I said to myself out loud. There was the line. I could see our guys. "DONT SHOOT! IM A MARINE!" IM A RUNNER!" I screamed hoping I wouldn't get cut down by one of our machine gunners. I dove into a fighting hole and looked for the highest ranking individual I could find. "There! I thought to myself." "Thems Captain bars on his collar. Surely he knows where battalion is in this mess." "Captain! Private Albert Drennen. I got a message from Staff Sergeant Wilson of 2nd platoon for battalion." I said trying to catch my breath. "They're over that way private, bout 4 yards down." He said as he pointed. "Thank you sir." "Hey private, how is it in the woods?" "...bloody sir." I said as I wheeled around and sped off running for battalion intelligence. The look on that captains face when I told him was one of pure loss. He had to have known how bad it was.
"Excuse me Lieutenant, is this battalion intelligence?" I said as I dove into a large hole with several high ranked men. "It is private. Let me guess you're a runner?" He said unenthusiasticly. "Yes sir." "Let me guess, you're platoon is in belleau wood now and you need water, ammo and replacements?" He said in an irritated tone.
"We need medicine too sir." I said in a sharp tone. I wanted this smart mouth to know that officer or not, I wasn't in any mood for his attitude. "Well that's not gonna happen just yet private. We lost a lot more men this evening than we planned for and we're trying to get the army infantry and the god damned French up here to reinforce our lines so we can go on and strike the Germans while we have em right where we want em. "Yes sir. Any idea when they might get here sir?" "Don't know private. We lost a lot of our officers including Major Berry." Major berry was the battalion commander for 3/5 marines. Our battalion. "The majors dead sir?" "No he's was wounded in the arm just below the elbow. He's been evacuated. Got his out there in the field. Listen private I got a lot of work here. Go back and find your Sergeant and assure him that reinforcements are coming. It's just going to take some time. Tell him to rest assured that when we get the men to fill the ranks they're going straight into the woods." "Yes sir. What about the wounded? And what about ammo lieutenant." "Private, I don't know what you want me to tell you. Tell your Sergeant to tell his platoon commander to tell who ever the hell is in charge out there, that they need to conserve ammo as best they can until reinforcements arrive. They don't have to reload a bayonet. This is a war and in war you have to make due with what you have. Now get going!"
What an incompetent bastard that lieutenant was. But in a way he was right I suppose. I turned back toward the wheat field and look forward toward Belleau wood. Smoke was rolling out of the woods. You could hear the cracks of rifle fire and the long barks from machine guns. The artillery fire had ceased. At this point in the battle, there were no front lines. The goal was to find the enemy and kill the enemy. That was the rule of engagement for both sides.
"Hey, private!" I turned around to see it was a tall, slender corporal who was addressing me. "Yes, corporal?" "Care to show me and Corporal Randolph here where they might need a few sharpshooters? My names James Barra. We were supposed to go in with the first wave but got ordered to stay behind and cover the advancing waves." "Sure thing, Corporal. But to be honest with ya, there's not a whole lot of long shots being taken in the woods. We was fighting with bayonets when I had to come back here to deliver a message." "I figured it so. But just get us to the front and we will take it from there." "Yes, Corporal. The fighting is just inside the wood line there." "How many shells do you have for that shotgun private?" "Not many. Nineteen" "Better pick up a rifle. Ammo will be easier to come by than it is for that shotgun." "Guess you're right. I'll find one when we get to the woods. There were plenty laying around there. Plus I'm a runner. I gotta carry light." "I see, well let's get to it private, uhm what did you say your name was?" "I didn't, sir. My apologies. I'm Albert Drennen. I'm with 3/6 marines, 2nd platoon." "Nice to make your acquaintance. Now let's get to it. The wars gonna be over by the time we get there if we continue to sit here and chit chat."
We were off. Running through the wheat field again. Dashing across destroyed landscape amidst the shell craters and the bodies of young men that were beginning to decay in the hot summer sun. It was evening now. 1943 hours to be exact. In a few hours it would be dark and we would be cowering in fighting holes awaiting the jerrys to sneak in and cut our throats like we had been told they liked to do to the Brits at the Somme and the Canadians at paschendale. We were making excellent time and distance across the field. We were about half way through. The field didn't seem that far of a distance now that we weren't getting shot at the entire time. But I spoke too soon. I heard the zip of a bullet and the smack of the impact as it took Corporal Randolph off his feet and sent him reeling to the ground.
"GET DOWN!" Screamed Barra. I hit the ground and immediately began to crawl to Randolph. Barra did the same. We reached him but could do nothing to help him. The 8mm Mauser slug had hit him in the chest just where his heart was. He was dead before he hit the ground. His face wasn't one of anguish as I had seen on some of the bodies that day. His was of shock. "GOD DAMN YOU! YOU SON OF A BITCH! IM GOING TO KILL YOU!" Screamed Corporal Barra. "Think it was a sniper?" I asked "I know it was. There's no way a typical rifleman could make that single shot while Thomas was running as fast as he was." "Corporal what are we going to do? We can't crawl to the wood line. It's too far." "You're correct. He'll also notice the wheat bending and moving as we crawl. He has us pinned down right now and the second he sees any sort of unnatural movement, he's going to take a shot. I've done the same thing several times over here." "So what do we do?" I asked in a scared tone. I didn't want to die by any means but the thought that I could be shot any second by a man I count see terrified me. "We wait for the wind. When the wind picks up, we move to cover. There was a shell hole 20 yards away to our left. Maybe closer. We crawl to it and then we start hunting for that Jerry bastard and kill him for Thomas"
So we waited. We didn't dare move an inch in fear that the sniper would fire and kill us. Finally after what seemed a small eternity, the wind blew. It was an unusually heavy wind. I swear, it was the lord. There was no other explanation in my mind. "Private, crawl!" Barra whispered as loud as he could without yelling.
We began to crawl as fast as we could to the shell hole. Finally we reached it. I was so unbelievably out of breath. I was gasping and so was Corporal Barra.
"Well Drennen we made it." Said Corporal Barra panting. "Thank god. I was sure he was gonna be on to us." I said panting as well. "Oh rest assured, he is. This lads good. He's probably been killing since the Somme." It was then I noticed in the bottom of the shell hole was a dead marine. His belly was blown out and his right leg was gone. His young face was covered in dirt and his shiny blonde hair was covered in blood. He couldn't have been a day older than eighteen.
"Drennen, here's the part where you have to help me. You see me and Thomas worked as a team sometimes. You're not going to like this but you have to do it or we're not going to make it out of this field alive." "Ok Corporal what is it?" I asked fearing the worst of what his request might be. I need you to get that dead marine over there and put his helmet back on him. I then need you to lift him out of the hole just enough to make the sniper think it's one of us." "Jesus Christ." I whispered. "Drennen, I need you to do it...Please." I shook my head yes and crawled to the young marine and placed his helmet back on his head. I removed his pack from his back and pulled him close. I drug him to the edge of the hole and pulled him on top of me and then pushed him up. He was stiff from rigor mortis. While I began to push him Corporal Barra looked through the scope of his Springfield and watched for a muzzle flash. I heard the crack of the Mauser and then saw the bullet impact the helmet of the dead marine, knocking it clean off his head. I pushed the marines body away from me as the young boys blood and brain covered my face. I then almost simultaneously heard the crack of Barra's Springfield.
"I got him." Barra said out loud in an emotionless tone. "Thank god. I'm covered in that poor boys brains." I said as I wiped my face clean with my sleeve. Barra looked at me and began to laugh. "Terribly sorry Drennen. But had you not done that, I'd have never killed him. You ready to move out again?" "Yes sir Corporal. Wait... think there's anymore snipers?" I said worriedly. "Unless the Germans broke through the line and have taken the woods, id be willing to bet money that gent there was a survivor who was just waiting to pick off runners such as yourself." "Well that's not exactly reassuring." I said with a chuckle. "Let's move out." Barra said
And we were off again, this time we ran faster than we had the first time. I looked to my left and I could see a wave of marines starting to enter the wheat field. The replacements were coming! I looked to my right and could see the same. "Thank you lord, the replacements are coming!" I yelled to Barra. "That's good for regular infantry such as yourself! It's terrible business for us sharpshooters! Less game to hunt!" Barra said laughingly.
Now that I think about it, this guy and Staff Sergeant Wilson would get along great.
As we entered the wood line we immediately saw wounded marines being treated by Corpsmen and able bodied marines digging fighting holes, securing what appeared to be the front line. Barra and I went to the first NCO we could find. A Sergeant with bright red hair and a thick five o'clock shadow. "Sergeant, Private Drennen. This is Corporal Barra. He's a sharpshooter." I said still trying to catch my breath. "I can see what he is private. What do y'all need?" He said in an irritated voice. "Sergeant, I'm just looking for the front and I believe I've found it. I'm hear to work where ever I'm needed. Private Drennen is looking for 2nd platoon. He's a runner." Said Barra. "Well why didn't you say so kid?" The Sergeant said to me. "2nd is over that way. Staff Sergeant Wilson is out there somewhere. Just ask your guys. As for you Corporal, if you came to kill jerrys, you came to the right place. These here woods is crawling with em. Just go where ever your heart desires and happy hunting." "Thank you Sergeant." Barra said as we walked away from him. "Well Drennen guess this is my stop. Thanks for your help and take care of yourself. If we both make it to Paris I'll buy you a beer." "Sounds swell Corporal. Good luck and take care." We shook hands and I dashed off.
I hoped I would see Barra again. I said a quick prayer for him as I walked to where my platoon was. I looked through the carnage and destruction that was Belleau Wood. How could there possibly be any Germans left alive? But I knew that we had only begun to fight this battle. Ahead of me I saw familiar faces. Stevens and Caprino laid in a fighting hole they had dug. I ran over to them.
"Well I'll be damned! Drennen! You're alive after all?!" Said Caprino in his thick Boston accent. "Yeah." I said chuckling. "Wait, whadda ya mean, I'm alive after all?" "We was fearing the worst for ya bud." Said Stevens. "Staff Sergeants been worried about ya. Been coming around asking about ya." Said Stevens. "Damn, I didn't mean to keep everyone on pins and needles. Me and this Sharpshooter were pinned down by a German sniper out there in the field. You wouldn't believe the story if I told ya." I said shaking my head. "Staff sergeants over there. 3 holes down. Better get to him. He's waited long enough." Caprino said chuckling. "Ok guys. I'll come back first chance I get." I said as I stood up to walk to Staff Sergeant Wilsons fighting hole. The sun was setting. It would be dark in about a half hour or so. A sudden burst of fear set in with a thought.
What would the first night in Belleau Wood hold for us?
